Amen. 00:01:45.159 --> 00:01:56.359 Well, it may be hard to believe, but the numbers will show that most Americans say that they believe in God. 00:01:57.079 --> 00:02:03.179 In fact, almost every poll that I've seen, Gallup, Pew Research, Lifeway, they all do these polls. 00:02:03.179 --> 00:02:11.599 They all say that over 80% of Americans will say that they believe in God. 00:02:11.599 --> 00:02:19.359 But when you dig a little bit into their responses, sadly, the truth starts to come out. 00:02:19.359 --> 00:02:27.639 You start to see that they may believe in a God, but they have no idea who he is. 00:02:28.780 --> 00:02:36.959 And perhaps a better question in our day and in our time than do you believe in God might be, do you believe in sin? 00:02:36.960 --> 00:02:41.820 Lifeway published a study in 2016. 00:02:41.920 --> 00:02:47.620 That's just six years ago now, but I don't think much has changed in a positive direction since then. 00:02:47.620 --> 00:02:53.140 And in that study, over 80% of Americans said that they believe in God. 00:02:53.200 --> 00:02:54.600 And that was the headline. 00:02:54.740 --> 00:02:55.460 Good news. 00:02:55.560 --> 00:02:57.140 Everybody believes in God. 00:02:57.540 --> 00:03:03.760 And that may sound good, but then again, you keep on digging and it gets a little bit more concerning. 00:03:03.759 --> 00:03:04.719 Here's what it says. 00:03:06.219 --> 00:03:16.280 Two-thirds, 65%, agreed that everyone sins a little, but most people are good by nature. 00:03:17.359 --> 00:03:22.180 A few Americans seem to think that most sins put them in spiritual danger. 00:03:23.060 --> 00:03:32.659 Three-quarters, 74% of Americans disagreed with the idea that even the smallest sin deserves eternal damnation. 00:03:32.659 --> 00:03:38.599 That includes almost two-thirds, 62%, who strongly disagreed. 00:03:39.060 --> 00:03:54.419 And even amongst those who believe in the concept of sin, most replied that they simply work on themselves, try to better themselves, rather than rely on Jesus Christ to free them from their sin. 00:03:54.419 --> 00:04:08.879 Now, in other words, according to this survey from Lifeway, most Americans, if you ask them, would say that if there is a God, then he must approve of what I do, must approve of who I am. 00:04:08.939 --> 00:04:10.379 He must think like me. 00:04:10.459 --> 00:04:11.799 He must act like me. 00:04:11.879 --> 00:04:14.419 He must be just like me. 00:04:14.419 --> 00:04:15.139 Me. 00:04:15.139 --> 00:04:26.800 In short, they do not grasp the holiness of God, the depth of our sin, and our desperate need for God's mercy. 00:04:27.939 --> 00:04:36.979 Without this fundamental understanding of who we are and who God is, of course, there is no need for repentance. 00:04:36.980 --> 00:04:44.660 Throughout our passage, Isaiah chapter 55, Isaiah has been speaking to sinners. 00:04:45.560 --> 00:04:48.340 And he's been calling them to repentance, inviting them. 00:04:48.439 --> 00:04:51.720 The Israelites have been exiled for their sin. 00:04:51.819 --> 00:04:53.500 They are out of their land. 00:04:53.620 --> 00:04:58.819 They're enduring punishment from the hand of a holy God for their sin against the Lord. 00:04:58.900 --> 00:05:00.740 But yet he offers them hope. 00:05:00.819 --> 00:05:02.860 You remember this from a couple of weeks ago. 00:05:02.860 --> 00:05:06.060 Isaiah 55, verses 6 and 7, it says, 00:05:06.360 --> 00:05:08.160 Seek the Lord while he may be found. 00:05:08.600 --> 00:05:10.480 Call upon him while he is near. 00:05:10.980 --> 00:05:12.879 Let the wicked forsake his way. 00:05:12.980 --> 00:05:13.580 That's repentance. 00:05:14.139 --> 00:05:16.199 And the unrighteous man, his thoughts. 00:05:16.920 --> 00:05:20.080 This was a call for total repentance. 00:05:20.280 --> 00:05:23.560 And we saw one main reason why in verse 7. 00:05:23.680 --> 00:05:23.900 It says, 00:05:23.900 --> 00:05:30.939 God will abundantly pardon any sinner who comes to him in faith. 00:05:30.939 --> 00:05:38.899 But this morning, in our verses, verses 8 and 9, we're going to see another reason that Isaiah gives us to repent. 00:05:39.180 --> 00:05:41.680 And this is a bigger reason. 00:05:41.800 --> 00:05:50.139 It's a foundational reason that undergirds and supports this call for repentance and God's eagerness to forgive. 00:05:50.379 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:51.980 Isaiah says, he says, 00:06:52.500 --> 00:06:56.300 Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts. 00:06:56.639 --> 00:06:58.040 And then verse 8, he says, 00:06:58.040 --> 00:07:09.040 In other words, Isaiah says that if we are to come to the Lord, 00:07:09.140 --> 00:07:16.300 we need to recognize that there is a gap between our thoughts and our ways 00:07:16.300 --> 00:07:20.120 and the Lord's thoughts and the Lord's ways. 00:07:20.259 --> 00:07:21.700 Our ways are wicked. 00:07:22.140 --> 00:07:23.420 They need forsaking. 00:07:23.580 --> 00:07:25.560 But his ways are holy. 00:07:25.560 --> 00:07:28.459 God never needs to apologize. 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:32.780 He never needs to forsake any of his ways. 00:07:32.959 --> 00:07:34.959 He never needs to try again. 00:07:35.759 --> 00:07:43.480 Every one of his ways for all of eternity has always been right and good and true. 00:07:43.680 --> 00:07:47.819 You and I, we can hardly go five seconds without making some sort of mistake, 00:07:47.939 --> 00:07:49.480 without sinning against the Lord. 00:07:50.540 --> 00:07:54.000 And Isaiah says that our thoughts are wicked. 00:07:54.000 --> 00:07:57.980 Though maybe we can, from the outside, deceive one another 00:07:57.980 --> 00:08:01.920 and make ourselves look presentable and better than we actually are. 00:08:01.980 --> 00:08:07.980 But our internal life, our internal thoughts, our internal wickedness, it accuses us. 00:08:08.779 --> 00:08:13.759 Isaiah says our plans and our motives, our intentions, our thoughts are wicked. 00:08:13.959 --> 00:08:16.300 And God sees them all. 00:08:16.300 --> 00:08:23.480 But the thoughts and the plans and the motives and the intentions of God are pure. 00:08:24.259 --> 00:08:26.040 They're right and they're perfect. 00:08:26.199 --> 00:08:30.300 He has never thought a wrong thought and never planned a poor plan. 00:08:30.720 --> 00:08:33.779 There is nothing impure or wrong in him whatsoever. 00:08:34.560 --> 00:08:37.500 And the biblical word for this is holiness. 00:08:38.779 --> 00:08:39.759 It's holiness. 00:08:39.759 --> 00:08:43.360 And that I learned in college called the bridge diagram. 00:09:09.880 --> 00:09:12.940 I wonder, you may be familiar with what I'm talking about here. 00:09:13.760 --> 00:09:20.400 You take a sheet of paper or a napkin or whatever you have nearby and you draw two cliffs. 00:09:21.240 --> 00:09:25.200 One on the left side of the paper, one on the right side of the paper. 00:09:25.660 --> 00:09:30.380 And in between is this gap, this unbridgeable gap. 00:09:30.379 --> 00:09:36.059 And you're taught, as you're taught to present this, to write Romans 6.23 up on top of the page, 00:09:36.200 --> 00:09:45.820 which says, the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. 00:09:45.919 --> 00:09:53.419 So on the left side is man with all of his wages, which is sin and death and separation. 00:09:53.600 --> 00:09:56.860 And on the right side over here is God and his holiness. 00:09:56.860 --> 00:10:03.460 And this gap is meant to illustrate the separation that has taken place because of our sin. 00:10:03.560 --> 00:10:06.259 And of course, what is there to bridge the gap? 00:10:06.480 --> 00:10:10.620 It's the free gift of God 00:11:45.199 A gust of wind comes by, you're holding a balloon, and whoosh, off it goes. 00:11:45.279 --> 00:11:51.939 And you follow it as far as your eyes can follow it until it just is a little you look there in Isaiah chapter 6, verse 1, it says this. 00:13:39.319 --> 00:13:47.379 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up. 00:13:47.839 --> 00:13:50.240 And the train of his robe filled the temple. 00:13:50.740 --> 00:13:52.779 And above him stood the seraphim. 00:13:52.860 --> 00:13:54.319 Each had six wings. 00:13:54.439 --> our response as well. 00:15:11.539 --> 00:15:12.480 It's three responses. 00:15:12.659 --> 00:15:17.559 It's to revere, to repent, and to receive. 00:15:18.659 --> 00:15:24.539 When the holiness of God becomes clear to you, revere, repent, and receive. 00:15:24.740 --> 00:15:29.860 Number one, see, a clear view of God's holiness ought to lead us to reverence. 00:15:30.659 --> 00:15:33.179 And the seraphim flying around the Lord, what did they say? 00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:38.500 Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. 00:15:38.500 --> 00:15:41.799 The whole earth is filled with the glory of 00:17:00.459 This beautiful picture of atonement in Isaiah chapter 6, verse 6. 00:17:00.559 --> 00:17:02.980 He says, behold, this has touched your lips. 00:17:03.100 --> 00:17:08.819 Your guilt is taken away and your sin is atoned for. 00:17:08.819 --> 00:17:24.539 The only hope for sinners like me and like you in the presence of a holy God is that he would provide atonement for our sins.
