00:06:16.659 --> 00:06:18.099 And so twice he does it, 00:06:18.439 --> 00:06:21.419 and in both cases it has sort of different contexts 00:06:21.420 --> 00:06:23.240 and lessons that we can learn about it. 00:06:23.280 --> 00:06:25.520 But John is the only one of the four gospel writers 00:06:25.520 --> 00:06:29.340 to record how at the beginning of Jesus' ministry, 00:06:29.860 --> off, 00:06:39.080 --> 00:06:41.580 that they're charging too high interest rates, 00:06:41.759 --> 00:06:45.460 or charging exorbitant prices for the doves or the animals. 00:06:45.520 --> 00:06:47.439 He's making no claim about that at all. 00:06:47.439 --> 00:06:50.180 And from the perspective of most of the people, 00:06:50.300 --> 00:06:52.560 the religious authorities, the theologians, 00:06:53.040 --> 00:06:54.199 most of the people there, 00:06:54.660 --> 00:06:57.899 these guys were involved in sacred work, 00:06:58.060 --> 00:06:59.100 not secular work. 00:06:59.259 --> 00:07:03.699 These guys were only being helpful in the worship of God. 00:07:04.220 --> 00:07:04.600 Why? 00:07:05.079 --> 00:07:07.839 Because when you came to the temple to celebrate Passover, 00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:09.540 you had to pay the temple tax. 00:07:09.899 --> 00:07:12.800 You had to pay the temple tax in pure silver, 00:07:13.220 --> 00:07:15.939 and that meant you had to use a particular type of coin. 00:07:15.939 --> 00:07:19.199 Most of the people, you know, they come from rural areas. 00:07:19.300 --> 00:07:20.980 They don't have that right type of stuff. 00:07:21.399 --> 00:07:24.980 And so it's really, really handy that right there in the temple, 00:07:25.399 --> 00:07:27.699 there's somebody who can take, you know, 00:07:27.800 --> 00:07:31.000 their nickels and dimes and loonies and toonies and all that stuff 00:07:31.000 --> 00:07:32.360 and give it to somebody, 00:07:32.420 --> 00:07:34.740 and they can give back to that person. 00:07:34.839 --> 00:07:37.459 They can give back to you that which you need to pay the tax 00:07:37.459 --> 00:07:39.399 as a faithful Jew. 00:07:39.860 --> 00:07:42.759 And you have to come and have some type of a
