00:00:30.940 --> 00:00:39.799 But up until this point in the Gospel of John, Jesus has been unknown to the world. 00:00:40.480 --> 00:00:47.600 There has only been a select few who had any idea who he was. 00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:54.320 As John said, we looked at this two weeks ago, 00:00:54.320 --> 00:01:01.020 I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know. 00:01:02.259 --> 00:01:03.299 He's here. 00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:07.239 And he's coming. 00:01:07.239 --> 00:01:18.699 Anticipation has been building up until this moment, and we saw some of that two weeks ago. 00:01:18.700 --> 00:01:23.320 There's John, the baptizer. 00:01:23.500 --> 00:01:24.939 He's out in the wilderness. 00:01:25.480 --> 00:01:29.659 He's wearing rugged clothing made of camel's hair. 00:01:29.920 --> 00:01:30.960 And he's preaching. 00:01:31.340 --> 00:01:32.260 And he's teaching. 00:01:32.500 --> 00:01:34.840 And he's baptizing people in water. 00:01:34.840 --> 00:01:38.579 He's calling people to repent. 00:01:39.579 --> 00:01:47.320 To turn from their sinful way of life back to God, back to the Lord. 00:01:47.319 --> 00:01:52.279 He's been proclaiming that the kingdom of heaven is near. 00:01:54.859 --> 00:02:00.919 And that the eyes of the nation of Israel are on John, the baptizer. 00:02:00.920 --> 00:02:08.280 So much so that the attention ripples all the way back to Jerusalem, the capital. 00:02:09.300 --> 00:02:17.319 And we saw two weeks ago how a delegation was sent from the Jewish religious leaders. 00:02:17.639 --> 00:02:25.139 A delegation of priests and Levites and Pharisees to come and question John and find out what he's doing out here. 00:02:25.560 --> 00:02:27.300 What is this message that you're bringing? 00:02:27.300 --> 00:02:31.660 What is moment has come. 00:03:32.280 --> 00:03:35.900 When Jesus makes his debut to the world. 00:03:35.900 --> 00:03:42.599 And from then on, in increasing measure, he begins to be known by the world. delegation had come to John the baptizer. 00:04:01.299 --> 00:04:05.599 The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him. 00:04:05.599 --> 00:04:13.919 And he said, look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. 00:04:14.819 --> 00:04:24.339 This is the one I meant when I said, he who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me. 00:04:24.339 --> 00:04:27.299 I myself did not 00:06:01.620 And he of course, he knew who his cousin was. 00:06:01.620 --> 00:06:06.439 But I think probably what he means is, I didn't know that he was the one. 00:06:07.439 --> 00:06:10.199 That he was the Messiah. 00:06:10.620 --> 00:06:12.199 The one who is greater than I. 00:06:12.259 --> 00:06:14.199 The one I've come to prepare the way for. 00:06:14.199 --> 00:06:21.759 When did John recognize that he was the one? 00:06:23.759 --> 00:06:27.360 John tells us in verses 32 to 34. 00:06:27.360 --> 00:06:30.460 Then John gave this testimony. 00:06:32.379 --> 00:06:37.199 He said, I saw the spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 00:06:37.620 --> 00:06:39.879 I myself did not know him. 00:06:40.439 --> 00:06:41.860 I didn't know he was the one. 00:06:41.939 --> 00:06:46.400 But the one who sent me to baptize with water told me. 00:06:46.399 --> 00:06:53.239 God had given John a sign to watch for so that he would know who the one was. 00:06:54.459 --> water in the river. 00:07:27.040 --> 00:07:28.819 And the crowd is all around. 00:07:28.939 --> 00:07:29.659 And he's preaching. 00:07:29.879 --> 00:07:31.259 And he's teaching. 00:07:32.439 --> 00:07:33.759 And people are coming. 00:07:34.159 --> 00:07:35.879 And he's baptizing them. 00:07:35.879 --> 00:07:43.519 And then all of a sudden, Jesus emerges from the crowd and comes walking toward him. 00:07:46.180 --> 00:07:49.980 At what point did John recognize that he was the one? 00:07:50.060 --> 00:07:56.779 Well, according to John's testimony, it was after he saw the spirit come down upon Jesus. 00:07:57.699 --> 00:08:03.180 And if we look carefully at the other gospel accounts of Jesus' baptism, 00:08:03.180 --> 00:08:11.720 the spirit came down upon Jesus just as he was going up out of the water after he had been baptized. 00:08:13.480 --> 00:08:17.120 And so that's why I think there's a break there in verse 29. 00:08:17.300 --> 00:08:23.019 I think John is just, he's telling us the events of the day a little bit out of order. 00:08:23.379 --> 00:08:26.439 John saw Jesus coming toward him. 00:08:26.439 --> 00:08:29.719 And that day, he said this about him. 00:08:29.800 --> 00:08:31.639 Look, the Lamb of God. 00:08:32.759 --> 00:08:39.840 We know from Matthew's gospel that this baptism of Jesus, 00:08:40.399 --> 00:08:45.399 there was a little conversation there between Jesus and John. 00:08:46.519 --> 00:08:50.740 Jesus came out to be baptized and they had a little exchange. 00:08:50.740 --> 00:08:53.820 And John said to him at that moment, 00:08:53.820 --> 00:08:57.360 I need to be baptized by you. 00:08:58.419 --> 00:09:00.240 And do you come to me? 00:09:01.419 --> 00:09:06.899 So there was a moment there where he realized, he recognized. 00:09:08.379 --> 00:09:13.740 But the real moment of confirmation came just after he had been baptized 00:09:13.740 --> 00:09:15.860 and was going up out of the water. 00:09:15.860 --> 00:09:20.620 And John saw the spirit come down upon him. 00:09:21.639 --> 00:09:25.960 Oh, I would have loved to have seen what that looked like. 00:09:27.240 --> 00:09:32.379 The gospel writers tell us that the spirit came down as a dove. 00:09:34.580 --> 00:09:38.019 What exactly that looked like, we don't know. 00:09:38.159 --> 00:09:43.860 But can you imagine John standing in the river there and watching this? 00:09:43.860 --> 00:09:47.519 He's just baptized Jesus under the water. 00:09:47.659 --> 00:09:49.460 And Jesus is going up out of the water. 00:09:49.600 --> 00:09:57.360 And then he sees the spirit Behold, behold, look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. 00:10:21.240 --> 00:10:27.620 This is the one I meant when I said, he who comes after me is greater than me. 00:10:27.759 --> 00:11:38.740 Right there, walking up out of the water. 00:11:38.740 --> 00:11:50.159 I wish I could have been there just to see how the people were responding and taking this in in this moment. 00:11:52.539 --> 00:12:02.039 This morning, with the rest of our time, we want to look at what John tells us that John the baptizer said or declared about Jesus. 00:12:03.720 --> 00:12:05.039 The first thing. 00:12:08.740 --> 00:12:10.879 That day, he said, look. 00:12:12.019 --> 00:12:13.360 The Lamb of God. 00:12:14.399 --> 00:12:16.500 Who takes away the sin of the world. 00:12:18.799 --> 00:12:19.840 What does that mean? 00:12:25.039 --> 00:12:27.200 We kind of wrestle a little bit with this, maybe. 00:12:27.879 --> 00:12:30.180 What did John mean when he said this? 00:12:30.220 --> 00:12:32.440 It's kind of an interesting question. 00:12:33.740 --> 00:12:34.600 John was a prophet. 00:12:34.600 --> 00:12:46.200 And as we find out later in the book of John, the apostle John, Jesus being the ultimate prophet, he said, this is how it works. 00:12:47.000 --> 00:12:50.460 I speak to you what I hear from God. 00:12:51.560 --> 00:12:53.540 That's how it worked with the prophets. 00:12:53.700 --> 00:12:55.879 They heard from God and they spoke. 00:12:55.879 --> 00:13:02.879 And so in this moment, it's not just John, the baptizer, speaking what he knows. 00:13:03.939 --> 00:13:07.759 It's John speaking what he hears from God. 00:13:08.200 --> 00:13:08.960 He's a prophet. 00:13:08.960 --> 00:13:16.940 We almost have to take a step back and wonder how much did John understand even of what he was saying. 00:13:17.060 --> 00:13:25.840 There's going to come a moment, which we'll get to in the weeks ahead, where John the baptizer even seems to have a moment of doubt about Jesus. 00:13:25.840 --> 00:13:34.759 And so the question is not so much what did John mean as he declared, behold, the Lamb of God. 00:13:35.840 --> 00:13:43.040 The question is, what did God think to fully understand this, we have to take a little bit of a journey back into what God has said in the past. 00:14:15.220 --> 00:14:21.279 First, we go all the way back to the story of Abraham, which we talked about not too long ago in our sermon series. 00:14:22.080 --> 00:14:25.120 Do you remember that moment when God tested Abraham? 00:14:26.680 --> 00:14:32.800 And he commanded him to offer Isaac, his son, as a sacrifice on Mount Moriah. 00:14:34.440 --> 00:14:38.279 Of course, he didn't intend for Abraham to go through with it. 00:14:38.279 --> 00:14:40.899 But he commanded it. 00:14:41.819 --> 00:14:43.860 And so Abraham had to wrestle with this. 00:14:45.639 --> 00:14:49.439 God's promise that all this blessing will come through Isaac. 00:14:49.720 --> 00:14:53.399 And
