begin by reading you a bit from an article on Psalm 81 that I found on Ligonier's website by a man named W. Robert Godfrey. 00:05:46.319 --> 00:05:50.360 And I just think this helps kind of set the stage for this particular psalm. 00:05:50.420 --> 00:05:53.180 So I try to listen carefully here as I give this a quick read. 00:05:54.180 --> 00:05:56.899 What does the church most need today? 00:05:57.579 --> 00:06:03.800 In answering this important but rather general question, Psalm 81 is uniquely important and helpful. 00:06:03.800 --> 00:06:09.439 This psalm obviously contains beautiful promises and clear directions to help the people of God. 00:06:10.160 --> 00:06:18.600 But careful study of this psalm will deepen our appreciation of it, increase its value for us, and show us how distinctive it is for helping the church. 00:06:18.600 --> 00:06:26.180 As we study psalms, we soon learn that the central verse of a psalm is often significant as a key to its interpretation. 00:06:27.200 --> 00:06:33.879 The central line of Psalm 81 is the heart of that psalm as the plaintive cry of God is heard, 00:06:34.220 --> 00:06:37.620 O Israel, if you would but listen to me. 00:06:38.120 --> 00:06:40.460 And this is the last half of verse 8. 00:06:40.459 --> 00:06:46.199 Perhaps this line will resonate more profoundly with the readers of this article if we translate it, 00:06:46.299 --> 00:06:49.199 O Israel, if you would but hear me. 00:06:49.859 --> 00:06:56.399 The center of Psalm 81, indeed the whole psalm, is a reflection on the Shema. 00:06:56.899 --> 00:07:00.839 And the Shema is from Deuteronomy chapter 6, verses 4 through 9. 00:07:00.939 --> 00:07:03.959 And so I'm just going to read that to you real quick before going back to the article. 00:07:04.139 --> 00:07:04.939 And it says this, 00:07:05.079 --> 00:07:08.879 Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 00:07:08.879 --> 00:07:13.219 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. 00:07:13.659 --> 00:07:16.519 And these words that I command you recognize that Psalm 81 00:07:49.240 --> 00:07:53.300 is the central psalm of Book 3 of Psalter. 00:07:54.040 --> 00:08:01.379 Book 3, Psalms 73 through 89, principally concerns the crisis in Israel caused by the destruction of the temple 00:08:01.379 --> 00:08:06.519 and the apparent failure of God's promises that David's sons would forever sit on the throne. 00:08:07.259 --> 00:08:13.519 Something of the cause and character of this crisis is contained in this central line of the central psalm. 00:08:14.199 --> 00:08:18.199 Since Book 3 is the central book of the five books of the Psalter, 00:08:18.959 --> 00:08:24.779 Psalm 81 and verse 8 actually is the central line of the whole book of Psalms. 00:08:24.779 --> 00:08:28.579 It stands at the very heart of Israel's songbook. 00:08:29.119 --> 00:08:32.659 It calls Israel to deep reflection on her relationship to her God. 00:08:33.120 --> 00:08:37.199 This psalm also appears to be central to Israel's liturgical calendar. 00:08:38.059 --> 00:08:43.899 The praise at new moon and full moon can refer only to the seventh month of the year, 00:08:44.419 --> 00:08:49.639 the Feast of Trumpets in Leviticus 23-24, which happened every year. 00:08:49.639 --> 00:08:54.220 We know this as Rosh Hashanah, it's the harvest festival of Israel, 00:08:55.059 --> 00:08:59.179 and the Feast of Tabernacles, which is every seven years. 00:08:59.899 --> 00:09:03.259 Between these two feasts occurred the Day of Atonement. 00:09:03.899 --> 00:09:08.840 As God called Israel to celebrate his great provisions as creator and deliverer, 00:09:09.159 --> 00:09:11.879 so he called his people to hear him. 00:09:12.819 --> 00:09:14.879 As the Shema was crucial to the Torah, 00:09:14.879 --> 00:09:18.919 so it is central to the Psalter and the Christian life. 00:09:19.639 --> 00:09:21.399 God's people must hear his word, 00:09:21.899 --> 00:09:24.939 particularly to reject false gods and to walk in his ways. 00:09:25.460 --> 00:09:27.419 They must not follow their own wisdom. 00:09:28.319 --> 00:09:35.919 How sad to contemplate that God might give us what we think is good for us. 00:09:36.899 --> 00:09:40.939 So that sets the stage for what I want to point out today in the text, 00:09:40.940 --> 00:09:48.140 and that is that Psalm 81 contains within it three calls or summons. 00:09:48.240 --> 00:09:52.940 First, in verses 1-5, there's a call to rejoice. 00:09:54.300 --> 00:09:59.000 Second, verses 6-10, a call to remember. 00:10:00.080 --> 00:10:05.180 And third, in verses 11-16, a call to repentance. 00:10:05.179 --> 00:10:11.439 Let's look first at a call to rejoice, excuse me, verses 1-5. 00:10:11.519 --> 00:10:16.219 So a call to rejoice, or quite literally, a call to worship. 00:10:16.939 --> 00:10:20.479 This opening of this psalm was a specific call to worship, 00:10:20.659 --> 00:10:25.339 and it was used for, we know, historically, for the Feast of Tabernacles. 00:10:25.340 --> 00:10:28.920 For this festival, the Israelites would make temporary shelters 00:10:28.920 --> 00:10:32.720 and would live in them for seven days as a reminder of their time in the wilderness 00:10:32.720 --> 00:10:36.780 and God's faithful provision for them there. 00:10:37.460 --> 00:10:39.879 This was to be a celebration of God's goodness, 00:10:39.879 --> 00:10:44.019 and it was to be full of joy, right? 00:10:44.080 --> 00:10:45.860 This is a call to rejoice. 00:10:46.440 --> 00:10:48.340 Listen again to the first three verses. 00:10:48.340 --> 00:11:09.720 So Israel was called to worship their God with gladness of heart. 00:11:10.240 --> 00:11:14.460 They were to shout for joy, raise a song, and play instruments, 00:11:14.560 --> 00:11:17.500 the tambourine, the lyre, the harp, and the trumpet. 00:11:17.500 --> 00:11:22.700 They were to worship their God with the wholeness of their being. 00:11:23.480 --> 00:11:26.799 The psalmist is calling us to the very same thing, or in this strange time in our staying in 00:11:38.679 --> 00:11:42.240 and to worship God in our lying down. 00:11:42.519 --> 00:11:46.259 Every moment in all of our actions and all of our thoughts 00:11:46.259 --> 00:11:47.639 and all of our emotions, 00:11:47.639 --> 00:11:52.100 we are to give ourselves to the worship of our God. 00:11:52.340 --> 00:11:58.919 Worship is not just narrowed down to special planned times, 00:11:58.960 --> 00:12:02.000 although it is that, but it is so much more. 00:12:02.080 --> 00:12:04.700 We're meant to live lives of worship for our God. 00:12:04.700 --> 00:12:11.660 We are to worship with all that we have for all that he is. 00:12:12.520 --> 00:12:15.700 Listen to what our God said to the Israelites through the prophet Isaiah, 00:12:15.820 -->
