Here is the moment where the changing of the guard, where the passing the mantle, passing the baton, comes to be fulfilled. 00:01:21.240 --> 00:01:22.900 And everybody knows it's coming. 00:01:23.879 --> 00:01:26.680 We know it's coming from the very beginning of the text. 00:01:26.819 --> 00:01:29.980 We're told the Lord is about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind. 00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:35.159 Elisha and the prophets, they know what's coming. 00:01:35.980 --> 00:01:37.319 We heard it in verse 3. 00:01:38.319 --> 00:01:41.739 The prophets asked Elisha, do you know the Lord is going to take your master from you today? 00:01:41.819 --> 00:01:42.420 Yes, I know. 00:01:43.500 --> 00:01:44.519 So be quiet. 00:01:44.519 --> 00:01:47.679 So everybody knows. 00:01:47.679 --> 00:01:51.259 But it seems like nobody wants to talk about it openly. 00:01:51.979 --> 00:01:59.920 This is one of these moments that is so massive that it's creating so much fear in the hearts of many. 00:02:00.780 --> 00:02:03.899 What is this going to mean for the nation? 00:02:03.900 --> 00:02:09.960 And what's this going to mean for us spiritually as this giant leaves the scene? 00:02:09.960 --> 00:02:21.240 If you turn with me to verse 12, you get a sense of just how significant Elijah is to the nation of Israel. 00:02:21.240 --> 00:02:32.760 As Elisha sees the horses of fire with a chariot come down, he says, my father, my father, the chariots and horsemen of Israel. 00:02:32.939 --> 00:02:37.760 And so we might think he's saying, Elijah, look, there's the chariots coming from heaven. 00:02:37.759 --> 00:02:41.659 But actually, Elisha is speaking about Elijah. 00:02:42.919 --> 00:02:49.679 In other words, to have the prophet Elijah on your side was to have the Lord's armies on your side. 00:02:50.780 --> 00:02:56.620 And so now we can perhaps begin to understand why the prophets are nervous and they're speaking quietly together. 00:02:56.719 --> take gospel opportunities? 00:04:30.399 --> 00:04:35.180 We can feel uncertain as we look at ourselves and we feel anxious and fragile and weak. 00:04:35.180 --> 00:04:41.240 Perhaps it's as we look --> 00:05:05.399 If we find ourselves in uncertain times. 00:05:05.939 --> 00:05:14.300 Because it reminds us in so many ways that we can and we should find certainty in our God and Savior. 00:05:15.459 --> 00:05:17.740 Three ways I think the text does it for us. 00:05:17.800 --> 00:05:23.459 First of all, you can be certain that God still works in power. 00:05:24.740 --> 00:05:26.680 This takes us to Elijah's journey. 00:05:26.680 --> 00:05:32.560 At first, did you notice that Elijah, as he knows he's about to be taken up to heaven, 00:05:33.019 --> 00:05:34.439 that he goes to visit the prophets? 00:05:35.420 --> 00:05:37.740 Verse 3, he goes to the prophets at Bethel. 00:05:38.340 --> 00:05:41.180 Then in verse 5, he goes to the prophets at Jericho. 00:05:41.840 --> 00:05:45.620 And then we meet the prophets again, 50 of them watching, 00:05:46.139 --> 00:05:48.840 as Elijah and Elisha arrive at the Jordan. 00:05:51.379 --> 00:05:52.660 Elijah's a faithful man. 00:05:52.660 --> 00:05:56.840 And here he is giving last words of encouragement. 00:05:57.939 --> 00:06:00.420 Not that long ago, he thought he was the only one. 00:06:00.460 --> 00:06:03.439 And he discovers there's actually 7,000 who are faithful to God. 00:06:03.860 --> 00:06:06.060 And so no doubt he's urging them to keep the faith. 00:06:07.100 --> 00:06:10.300 Don't bow down to idols, but continue to follow the Lord. 00:06:11.040 --> 00:06:12.460 But more than that, 00:06:13.540 --> 00:06:18.000 what we have in 2 Kings 2 is a very significant journey. 00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:22.620 The places that are mentioned are important. 00:06:23.660 --> 00:06:26.800 Because 600 years ago, 00:06:27.860 --> 00:06:31.699 the people of Israel made another very similar journey. 00:06:31.779 --> 00:06:34.699 You can read about it in Joshua chapters 3 to 5. 00:06:36.139 --> 00:06:41.920 The moment where Joshua led the people through the Jordan River 00:06:41.920 --> 00:06:43.779 into the Promised Land. 00:06:43.779 --> 00:06:49.459 And then there was a covenant renewal ceremony at Gilgal. 00:06:50.519 --> 00:06:54.739 And of course, Jericho was the site of their first victory 00:06:54.739 --> 00:06:56.500 in the Promised Land, 00:06:56.599 --> 00:06:59.859 where God was clearly fighting and acting for his people. 00:07:01.079 --> 00:07:03.239 So think about what was happening at that time. 00:07:03.379 --> 00:07:05.319 Another giant had just died. 00:07:05.459 --> 00:07:06.979 Moses had died. 00:07:07.059 --> 00:07:08.719 He'd led the people for decades. 00:07:09.779 --> 00:07:11.479 And Joshua had replaced him. 00:07:11.480 --> 00:07:13.400 But wonderfully, 00:07:14.360 --> 00:07:16.860 the people in Joshua's generation are discovering 00:07:16.860 --> 00:07:20.360 God is still working powerfully 00:07:20.360 --> 00:07:23.080 in a different generation with a different leader. 00:07:23.180 --> 00:07:25.180 Now fast forward 600 years, 00:07:26.060 --> 00:07:28.500 and it's exactly the same message. 00:07:29.120 --> 00:07:31.040 God has been working, and we've seen it. 00:07:31.120 --> 00:07:33.640 God has been working powerfully through Elijah, 00:07:34.220 --> 00:07:38.060 and he's still going to work in power through Elisha. 00:07:38.060 --> 00:07:40.399 And if we need proof, 00:07:40.939 --> 00:07:42.259 go to verse 8, 00:07:43.100 --> 00:07:44.439 where we find Elijah, 00:07:45.019 --> 00:07:45.959 at one last time, 00:07:46.060 --> 00:07:47.060 taking his cloak, 00:07:47.480 --> 00:07:48.220 rolling it up, 00:07:48.319 --> 00:07:49.560 and striking the water, 00:07:50.160 --> 00:07:51.240 and the water divided, 00:07:51.980 --> 00:07:53.540 and they crossed on dry ground. 00:07:53.879 --> 00:07:56.620 And then verse 13 and 14, 00:07:57.120 --> 00:07:59.379 we have Elisha picking up Elijah's cloak, 00:08:00.259 --> 00:08:01.319 striking the water, 00:08:01.540 --> 00:08:02.899 and the water parts, 00:08:03.199 --> 00:08:04.060 and he crosses over. 00:08:04.060 --> 00:08:08.280 God is still working in power. 00:08:09.819 --> 00:08:11.360 And this is a theme 00:08:11.360 --> 00:08:13.780 that we can track through the Bible. 00:08:15.519 --> 00:08:16.959 We've said it already, 00:08:17.480 --> 00:08:20.019 that when we get to the story of John the Baptist, 00:08:20.560 --> 00:08:23.560 we are to understand that he is the second Elijah 00:08:23.560 --> 00:08:25.160 who was anticipated, 00:08:25.459 --> 00:08:26.899 the one who was the messenger 00:08:26.899 --> 00:08:28.519 preparing the way for the Lord. 00:08:28.779 --> 00:08:29.879 So think about what's happening 00:08:29.879 --> 00:08:31.459 with John the Baptist and Jesus. 00:08:31.459 --> 00:08:32.819 John the Baptist, 00:08:32.939 --> 00:08:34.439 he had a very powerful ministry, 00:08:34.539 --> 00:08:34.840 didn't he? 00:08:35.019 --> 00:08:36.960 He was gathering many people, 00:08:37.340 --> 00:08:39.799 and they're turning away from darkness 00:08:39.799 --> 00:08:41.120 to trust in the Lord. 00:08:41.799 --> 00:08:44.000 But as soon as Jesus comes on the scene, 00:08:44.340 --> 00:08:46.039 John is very happy to acknowledge 00:08:46.039 --> 00:08:47.659 and point the people to Jesus, 00:08:47.879 --> 00:08:48.860 who is greater. 00:08:49.939 --> 00:08:50.799 He must increase, 00:08:50.879 --> 00:08:52.000 and I must decrease. 00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:54.679 The one coming is so great, 00:08:54.740 --> 00:08:56.159 I'm not worthy to bend down 00:08:56.159 --> 00:08:58.460 and untie his shoelaces. 00:08:58.460 --> 00:09:00.560 And there at the Jordan, 00:09:02.320 --> 00:09:04.759 John the Baptist passed the mantle 00:09:04.759 --> 00:09:07.120 very happily to Jesus, 00:09:07.240 --> 00:09:08.820 the true and final prophet. 00:09:09.379 --> 00:09:10.720 And in the life of Jesus, 00:09:10.879 --> 00:09:14.019 we see that God still works in power, 00:09:14.340 --> 00:09:15.820 in great power, 00:09:15.980 --> 00:09:17.300 bringing in his kingdom, 00:09:17.740 --> 00:09:19.800 bringing us salvation. 00:09:21.420 --> 00:09:21.940 And then in the, 00:09:22.060 --> 00:09:22.759 it's interesting, 00:09:23.280 --> 00:09:26.120 between Acts 1 and 1 and 2 Kings, 00:09:26.120 --> 00:09:27.840 so many themes connecting. 00:09:27.940 --> 00:09:28.480 In Acts 1, 00:09:28.560 --> 00:09:29.519 where we've been in the morning, 00:09:29.679 --> 00:09:31.159 Jesus with his apostles. 00:09:33.060 --> 00:09:34.039 He says, 00:09:34.159 --> 00:09:35.560 just before he ascends, 00:09:35.799 --> 00:09:37.440 that he will send the Spirit. 00:09:37.580 --> 00:09:39.820 The Spirit will give them power 00:09:39.820 --> 00:09:41.740 to be his witnesses. 00:09:41.879 --> 00:09:43.019 And to read the book of Acts, 00:09:43.080 --> 00:09:44.179 we understand that Jesus 00:09:44.179 --> 00:09:46.679 continues to work in power 00:09:46.679 --> 00:09:49.279 while he has gone to heaven. 00:09:49.279 --> 00:09:53.120 Because God is unchanging 00:09:53.120 --> 00:09:54.919 in his power. 00:09:55.939 --> 00:09:59.879 God continues to work out his purposes. 00:10:00.919 --> 00:10:02.819 His arm is never short 00:10:02.819 --> 00:10:04.899 so that he cannot save. 00:10:06.360 --> 00:10:07.539 And if that was true 00:10:07.539 --> 00:10:10.100 in the Moses and Joshua 00:10:14.419 in the John and Jesus 00:10:14.419 --> 00:10:15.579 and Apostle generations, 00:10:16.019 --> 00:10:16.980 it is true 00:10:16.980 --> 00:10:19.300 in our generation as well. 00:10:20.800 --> 00:10:23.279 It is a truth for our church. 00:10:23.960 --> 00:10:25.800 It is a truth for your life 00:10:25.800 --> 00:10:27.240 and for mine. 00:10:28.899 --> 00:10:30.300 So if we find 00:10:56.480 He still cares. 00:10:57.500 --> 00:10:58.659 He still builds his church. 00:10:59.480 --> 00:11:01.019 He still invites us to him 00:11:01.019 --> 00:11:02.639 to find rest 00:11:02.639 00:11:46.379 He's not limited to certain types of leaders, 00:11:46.459 --> 00:11:47.459 not just Elijah, 00:11:48.019 --> 00:11:49.039 but Elisha too 00:11:49.039 --> 00:11:50.299 will demonstrate 00:11:50.299 --> 00:11:52.459 God continues to work in power. 00:11:53.000 --> 00:11:53.879 And so our call 00:11:53.879 --> 00:11:54.679 is to have faith. 00:11:56.059 --> 00:11:57.819 Our call is to look to the Lord 00:11:57.819 --> 00:11:58.500 as our rock, 00:11:58.579 --> 00:11:59.299 as our redeemer, 00:11:59.419 --> 00:12:00.439 but also our commander 00:12:00.439 --> 00:12:01.279 and mission leader 00:12:01.279 --> 00:12:03.819 because we can be certain 00:12:03.819 --> 00:12:06.860 that God does still work in power today. 00:12:09.679 --> 00:12:10.819 Here's the second thing
