he says this kind of mysterious thing. 00:00:23.839 --> 00:00:27.859 When John asks and objects to baptizing Jesus, 00:00:27.859 --> 00:00:31.939 Jesus responds to him that this is done to fulfill all righteousness. 00:00:32.880 --> 00:00:34.280 And there's some mystery in those words, 00:00:34.359 --> 00:00:35.920 but part of what Jesus' meaning there 00:00:35.920 --> 00:00:38.679 was that he had 00:01:01.699 He did that for our sakes, like the Catechism teaches us. 00:01:01.859 --> 00:01:04.420 Jesus not only died for our sakes, he lived for our sakes, 00:01:04.739 --> 00:01:07.060 and he suffered temptation all for our sake. 00:01:08.039 --> 00:01:10.500 So when you ask the question, which is a natural one to ask, 00:01:10.599 --> 00:01:12.079 why did Jesus have to be tempted? tested in the wilderness, 00:01:20.459 --> 00:01:22.799 that he might come through untouched by temptation. 00:01:22.799 --> 00:01:27.659 To be our savior, Jesus had to succeed where Israel had Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness 00:03:15.899 --> 00:03:17.039 to be tempted by the devil. 00:03:17.799 --> 00:03:19.079 And the key words there, 00:03:19.619 --> 00:03:20.879 by the Spirit into the wilderness, 00:03:21.539 --> 00:03:23.079 tell us what is happening. 00:03:23.080 --> 00:03:26.440 The wilderness in biblical language had a symbol to it. 00:03:26.860 --> 00:03:28.580 It recalled what Israel endured 00:03:28.580 --> 00:03:30.280 after their redemption from Egypt. 00:03:31.040 --> 00:03:32.880 And the wilderness was a place of testing. 00:03:33.720 --> 00:03:36.000 The wilderness in biblical imagery is a place of testing. 00:03:36.300 --> 00:03:37.840 And that's what's happening to Jesus. 00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:40.640 He's enduring testing to prove his obedience 00:03:40.640 --> 00:03:44.020 in the way that Israel was tested in the wilderness. 00:03:44.939 --> 00:03:46.740 And it's where Israel failed in the wilderness. 00:03:46.960 --> 00:03:49.100 If you remember the story of, 00:03:49.180 --> 00:03:51.720 we'll call it the second most spectacular redemption in history, 00:03:51.719 --> 00:03:53.359 which is the redemption of Egypt 00:03:53.359 --> 00:03:55.460 or the redemption of Israel from slavery. 00:03:55.919 --> 00:03:57.479 And you remember from the story of Exodus, 00:03:57.699 --> 00:03:59.520 the ten plagues that culminated 00:03:59.520 --> 00:04:01.439 in the death of the firstborn sons of Egypt, 00:04:01.620 --> 00:04:05.139 which caused Pharaoh to finally let the Israelites go. 00:04:05.979 --> 00:04:07.139 All the people witnessed that, 00:04:07.560 --> 00:04:08.979 the death of the firstborn sons 00:04:08.979 --> 00:04:11.340 and the Israelites themselves being protected 00:04:11.340 --> 00:04:12.740 from that curse. 00:04:12.740 --> 00:04:14.719 Then as they left 00:04:14.719 --> 00:04:18.340 and the Israelites were followed by Pharaoh's armies, 00:04:18.560 --> 00:04:20.360 the Lord parted the Red Sea before them, 00:04:20.980 --> 00:04:24.120 showing by a magnificent hand and an outstretched arm, 00:04:24.199 --> 00:04:24.939 the scripture says, 00:04:25.199 --> 00:04:26.259 how he would deliver them. 00:04:27.100 --> 00:04:28.600 And then after the Red Sea, 00:04:29.340 --> 00:04:30.460 they journeyed in the wilderness, 00:04:30.800 --> 00:04:32.920 guided by a pillar of cloud by night, God, 00:05:04.960 --> 00:05:06.260 by rejecting God, 00:05:06.480 --> 00:05:07.340 by forgetting him. 00:05:07.339 --> 00:05:10.339 After all these things were witnessed by the Israelites 00:05:10.339 --> 00:05:12.560 and the Lord led them to Mount Sinai, 00:05:12.659 --> 00:05:13.739 they started to worship idols. 00:05:13.839 --> 00:05:15.719 They had forgotten God already. 00:05:17.399 --> 00:05:18.459 Because the Israelites, 00:05:19.119 --> 00:05:21.120 the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, 00:05:21.239 --> 00:05:22.560 share the same nature that we do, 00:05:23.579 --> 00:05:25.639 the nature that accepts gifts, 00:05:25.879 --> 00:05:26.759 that enjoys gifts, 00:05:26.819 --> 00:05:28.639 but spurns and forgets the giver. 00:05:29.199 --> 00:05:29.939 That's our nature. 00:05:30.299 --> 00:05:31.419 That's what failed in the wilderness. 00:05:31.899 --> 00:05:33.579 Because we have a nature like the Israelites, 00:05:33.579 --> 00:05:35.039 where we will explains from Joshua 5. 00:07:50.459 --> 00:07:52.919 This is Joshua 5, verse 6, 00:07:53.839 --> 00:07:55.099 where the Lord describes 00:07:55.099 --> 00:07:56.519 the response of the people of Israel. 00:07:56.620 --> 00:07:57.399 For the people of Israel 00:07:57.399 --> 00:07:58.919 walked 40 years in the wilderness 00:07:58.919 --> 00:08:00.019 until all the nation, 00:08:00.479 --> 00:08:01.919 the men of war who came out of Egypt, 00:08:02.120 --> 00:08:03.539 perished because they did not obey 00:08:03.539 --> 00:08:04.419 the voice of the Lord. 00:08:04.819 --> 00:08:05.799 The Lord swore to them 00:08:05.799 --> 00:08:07.419 that he would not let them see the land 00:08:07.419 --> 00:08:09.039 that the Lord had sworn to their fathers 00:08:09.039 --> 00:08:09.759 to give to us, 00:08:10.079 --> 00:08:11.539 a land flowing with milk and honey. 00:08:12.439 --> 00:08:13.839 Because of the Israelites' failure 00:08:13.839 --> 00:08:14.740 to remember God, 00:08:14.839 --> 00:08:16.299 they didn't enter the promised land. 00:08:16.959 --> 00:08:18.339 The consequences were severe. 00:08:18.339 --> 00:08:20.399 Even though they enjoyed the gifts, 00:08:21.039 --> 00:08:22.699 they loved them for their own sake. 00:08:23.419 --> 00:08:24.699 And they received condemnation 00:08:24.699 --> 00:08:26.779 for failing the test in the wilderness. 00:09:14.039 --> 00:09:14.899 Jesus would restore. 00:09:14.899 --> 00:09:16.120 He would redeem 00:09:16.120 --> 00:09:17.919 because He would become the new head. 00:09:18.579 --> 00:09:19.819 He would do the same thing 00:09:19.819 --> 00:09:20.939 that Israel did. 00:09:21.120 --> 00:09:22.279 He was tested in the wilderness, 00:09:22.740 --> 00:09:24.819 but He would be shown approved. describes the servant of the Lord, 00:09:38.860 --> 00:09:39.740 there are these places 00:09:39.740 --> 00:09:41.879 where Isaiah describes the servant of the Lord 00:09:41.879 --> 00:09:42.899 and it's clearly Israel. 00:09:43.620 --> 00:09:44.759 And then He changes voice 00:09:44.759 --> 00:09:45.860 where that servant of the Lord 00:09:45.860 --> 00:09:47.679 is this Holy One who is to come, 00:09:48.080 --> 00:09:49.639 this Holy One who they're anticipating. 00:09:50.580 --> 00:09:52.519 And you see it especially in Isaiah chapter 50. 00:09:52.620 --> 00:09:53.679 So if you want to
