the genealogy of Jesus Christ. 00:05:55.939 --> 00:05:59.460 That screams out, God is faithful. 00:06:00.500 --> 00:06:05.100 As we heard last week, Matthew grabs the very language from the opening chapters of Genesis. 00:06:05.100 --> 00:06:09.760 And this is a phrase that drives the narrative of the Bible. 00:06:10.560 --> 00:06:13.400 All of Judaism was centered on a genealogy. 00:06:14.320 --> 00:06:20.360 If you go back to the dawn of creation, the world had been plunged into darkness through sin. 00:06:20.360 --> 00:06:28.340 But God made a promise to create a new world, a new race, a new creation. 00:06:29.340 --> 00:06:36.240 At the dawn of history, God said he would do it through a promised child that would come out of the family of Israel. 00:06:36.240 --> 00:06:41.240 To not only rule and reign, but to bring about the work of redemption. 00:06:42.780 --> 00:06:45.939 And God is now bringing those promises to pass. 00:06:45.939 --> 00:06:53.899 God promised this offspring That's what the title Christ means in this genealogy. 00:08:18.879 --> 00:08:23.759 The long-awaited king who has come to take his rightful place on the throne. 00:08:23.759 --> 00:08:29.060 And one day every knee will bow to this king Jesus. 00:08:29.980 --> 00:08:33.159 So friend, Jesus is no myth. 00:08:34.100 --> 00:08:36.480 This is the long-awaited Messiah of history. 00:08:37.819 --> king. 00:08:54.819 --> 00:08:55.599 And he has come. 00:08:56.359 --> 00:09:00.879 If you are new to reading the Bible, this is the heart of the message from Genesis to Revelation. 00:09:01.619 --> 00:09:05.619 At the heart of Christianity and the scriptures is this Jesus of Nazareth. 00:09:07.199 --> 00:09:13.579 There are 66 books in the Bible written by at least 40 authors spanning over 2,000 years. 00:09:13.580 --> 00:09:15.840 But there is only one subject. 00:09:16.280 --> 00:09:17.520 One overarching subject. 00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:19.759 God, the Son, our Lord Jesus. 00:09:22.240 --> 00:09:27.259 So the center of history is not about oppressors and the oppressed. 00:09:27.960 --> 00:09:30.840 It is about sinners and their relationship to this all-sufficient Savior. 00:09:32.720 the exile in Babylon in verse 6 to 11. 00:09:42.840 --> 00:09:46.120 And then Babylon to the time of Christ, verse 12 to 17. 00:09:47.120 --> 00:09:50.700 Matthew is saying God has been faithful at all times and all places in every circumstance. 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:57.139 God has been faithful to bring about these promises in every era of Israel's history. 00:09:58.440 --> 00:10:02.280 And God is the architect and source of this great plan of salvation. 00:10:03.080 --> 00:10:05.720 And he is committed to fulfilling these promises. 00:10:05.720 --> 00:10:10.840 So when you read the genealogy, this is not like flipping through the Old Testament yellow pages. 00:10:11.840 --> 00:10:16.560 Each of these names are links in a chain that God has carefully put together. 00:10:18.000 sovereign choice, even in this genealogy. 00:10:29.419 --> 00:10:33.439 In a culture where the older brother is entitled to the inheritance, 00:10:34.139 --> 00:10:36.579 you see God choosing the 00:11:04.539 --> 00:11:10.139 The apostle Paul wanted to preach, but God instead sent him into a prison. 00:11:11.839 --> 00:11:17.860 What everyone thought was an obstacle, Paul saw as a sovereignly ordained opportunity. 00:11:19.079 --> 00:11:20.699 He tells the church in Philippi, 00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:23.379 what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. 00:11:24.959 --> 00:11:26.539 Our God knows what he is doing. 00:11:27.819 --> 00:11:30.360 God brings his people into many storms, 00:11:30.519 --> 00:11:33.259 and Christian, he will preserve you in each one. 00:14:01.680 --> 00:14:04.759 But this genealogy doesn't just answer who the main character is, 00:14:05.100 --> 00:14:06.100 but what is he like? 00:14:06.960 --> 00:14:08.180 Who is this God? 00:14:08.179 --> 00:14:12.879 And the answer is God is a gracious God. 00:14:14.079 --> 00:14:15.459 And point number one is God is faithful. 00:14:15.639 --> 00:14:18.699 Point number two is Jesus is a friend of sinners. 00:14:19.739 --> 00:14:21.099 And we'll spend most of our time here. 00:14:22.500 --> 00:14:25.479 Now, if the names in Hebrews 11 are a hall of faith, 00:14:26.000 --> 00:14:28.579 the names in Matthew 1 are a hall of grace. 00:14:29.699 --> 00:14:34.199 This is made apparent by who Matthew chooses to insert into this genealogy. 00:14:34.200 --> 00:14:39.400 This is not a genealogy of insiders, but one of outsiders. 00:14:40.640 --> 00:14:44.100 But each of these names are trophies of God's majestic grace. 00:14:45.600 --> 00:14:46.740 You know, people scorn Jesus, 00:14:47.120 --> 00:14:49.460 saying this man is a friend of tax collectors and sinners. 00:14:50.700 --> 00:14:52.280 They spoke better than they knew. 00:14:52.980 --> 00:14:54.700 Jesus was a friend of sinners. 00:14:56.000 --> 00:14:59.340 But there's a mystery and a paradox about our Lord Jesus. 00:15:00.220 --> 00:15:02.300 Because he was with them, but he was not of them. made himself a friend to sinners. 00:15:13.759 --> 00:15:15.099 We see that right from the beginning. 00:15:15.319 --> 00:15:18.179 Because not only is this a royal lineage, as we heard last week, 00:15:18.299 --> 00:15:20.559 this is a genealogy of grace. 00:15:21.059 --> 00:15:22.500 Look at who Matthew includes. 00:15:23.459 --> 00:15:24.839 He includes five women. 00:15:26.120 --> 00:15:27.459 Tamar in verse 3. 00:15:28.699 --> 00:15:31.159 Rahab and Ruth in verse 5. 00:15:31.159 --> 00:15:35.559 And the woman known as the wife of Uriah in verse 6. 00:15:36.000 --> 00:15:37.899 And then we have Mary in verse 16. 00:15:38.379 --> 00:15:40.019 And we'll deal with Mary next week, Lord willing. 00:15:41.740 --> 00:15:44.319 Now, we should note that it is striking for Matthew 00:15:44.319 --> 00:15:46.799 to include women in the first place. 00:15:47.959 --> 00:15:50.659 After all, Jesus' royal bloodline is being established 00:15:50.659 --> 00:15:52.399 through the fathers. 00:15:53.519 --> 00:15:55.899 Through the line of Abraham and David. 00:15:55.899 --> 00:15:58.620 You might say, well, what's the big deal? 00:15:59.199 --> 00:16:00.120 If it includes women? 00:16:00.959 --> 00:16:05.079 Well, culturally, it doesn't make any sense for Matthew to do this. 00:16:06.079 --> 00:16:09.879 After all, this was a society where women were seen as inferior. 00:16:11.799 --> 00:16:15.059 The testimony of women were inadmissible in court. 00:16:15.059 --> 00:16:19.339 Men could divorce their wives, throwing them out on the street 00:16:19.339 --> 00:16:20.779 for burning their toast in the morning. 00:16:22.519 --> 00:16:26.659 In this culture, these women added nothing to Jesus' credentials. 00:16:27.639 --> 00:16:28.459 But Matthew disagrees. 00:16:29.199 --> 00:16:32.479 Matthew is intentionally breaking the pattern to include them. 00:16:32.879 --> 00:16:36.199 He wants us to see that these women are included. 00:16:36.799 --> anticipates that Jesus would fully include women 00:16:45.440 --> 00:16:46.380 in the family of God. 00:16:47.720 --> 00:16:49.700 Jesus called women to be his disciples. 00:16:51.760 --> 00:16:54.240 Unheard of for women to sit at the feet of a teacher, 00:16:54.740 --> 00:16:56.800 Jesus invited them to sit and learn from him. 00:16:57.620 --> 00:17:01.020 He entrusted women to be his first resurrection witnesses. 00:17:02.080 --> 00:17:03.760 Jesus gave women dignity. 00:17:05.000 --> 00:17:06.759 But second, although these women had dignity, 00:17:06.900 --> 00:17:08.360 they certainly did not have the pedigree. 00:17:08.359 --> 00:17:12.259 Because if he wanted to do that to list women with pedigree, 00:17:12.579 --> 00:17:14.939 he could have listed the four mothers of Israel. God's grace 00:17:42.319 --> 00:17:44.859 to get a glimpse of the God they knew. 00:17:46.059 --> 00:17:48.879 The first woman was Tamar in verse 3. 00:17:50.039 --> 00:17:51.919 You can read about her in Genesis 38. 00:17:53.159 --> 00:17:55.259 Now, Tamar had something of a notorious history. 00:17:56.539 --> 00:17:58.720 She had the reputation of being a black widow. 00:17:59.720 --> 00:18:02.379 You know, her husband just started to mysteriously drop dead. 00:18:02.380 --> 00:18:04.600 Not once, but twice. 00:18:05.600 --> 00:18:08.560 And Judah, her father-in-law, was not about to let it happen a third time. 00:18:10.180 --> 00:18:12.180 Tamar was a childless widow, 00:18:13.140 --> 00:18:16.120 which in those days was a public disgrace. 00:18:16.119 --> 00:18:19.719 Not only would she have been a public disgrace, 00:18:20.139 --> 00:18:21.219 but she would have been desperate 00:18:21.219 --> 00:18:24.639 because Judah, her father-in-law, neglects her, 00:18:25.559 --> 00:18:27.319 neglects to provide for her. 00:18:28.079 --> 00:18:29.979 In people's minds, she was bad news. 00:18:31.359 --> 00:18:33.259 And in this sad story of a broken family, 00:18:34.519 --> 00:18:37.319 her father-in-law, Judah, is actually clueless 00:18:37.319 --> 00:18:41.939 because God was the one who was striking these men dead for their wickedness. 00:18:41.940 --> 00:18:45.820 And the whole story was an ugly affair, 00:18:46.559 --> 00:18:50.380 filled with lies, scandal, and hypocrisy. 00:18:51.860 --> 00:18:55.759 Out of Tamar's desperation, she resorts to deception. 00:18:57.059 --> 00:18:59.980 She disguises herself as a prostitute, 00:19:00.500 --> 00:19:03.799 enticing her father-in-law, Judah, into getting her pregnant. 00:19:05.340 --> 00:19:07.660 Judah himself is on his way to a pagan party 00:19:07.660 --> 00:19:10.519 when he sees Tamar on the side of the road disguised. 00:19:10.519 --> 00:19:13.700 But he takes a detour and have any money with him, 00:19:20.960 --> 00:19:23.019 so he leaves the equivalent of his ID card. 00:19:23.859 --> 00:19:25.879 In his mind, he would be right back to get it. 00:19:26.720 --> keep reading Genesis. 00:22:15.039 --> 00:22:18.819 And you realize God uses Tamar to change Judah. 00:22:20.259 --> 00:22:24.720 God uses Tamar to transform Judah and to bring about true repentance. 00:22:24.720 --> 00:22:29.539 Because Tamar in that moment exposed Judah's selfish heart. 00:22:30.539 --> 00:22:43.019 And you see afterward, when Judah is before Joseph in Egypt, Judah is the one who steps up and offers his own life in exchange for his younger brothers. 00:22:44.559 --> 00:22:49.360 Earlier in his life, Judah said, I'll sacrifice your life to improve my life. 00:22:49.359 --> 00:22:53.479 But by the end of it, he says, I'll sacrifice my life to save your life. 00:22:55.299 --> 00:23:01.899 Judah foreshadows the perfect man, the Lord Jesus Christ, who would lay his life down for others. 00:23:02.479 --> 00:23:05.639 So you see why it makes sense for Jesus to come from the house of Judah. 00:23:08.059 --> 00:23:09.500 A simple application. 00:23:10.240 --> 00:23:13.279 By God's grace, people can change. 00:23:13.279 --> 00:23:19.039 I know God has transformed men of this congregation that resemble Judah. 00:23:19.940 --> 00:23:24.240 But man or woman, 00:24:09.699 But friend, there is no degree of sin or brokenness that prevents God's plan from triumphantly marching forward. 00:24:09.700 --> 00:24:13.019 Your life may be painted with dark colors. 00:24:13.640 --> 00:24:15.680 But God is the master artist. 00:24:16.059 --> 00:24:22.120 He uses those dark colors on his canvas of history to make a beautiful display of his redeeming grace. --> 00:24:33.419 That was her profession. 00:24:33.420 --> 00:24:39.380 She started outside the family of God, living in complete darkness. 00:24:40.380 --> 00:24:44.480 She came from the Canaanites, sworn enemies of God's people. 00:24:45.400 --> 00:24:46.460 Not the best pedigree. 00:24:47.860 --> 00:24:54.620 But the book of Joshua makes clear that Rahab heard about the power of God through the miraculous works in the Red Sea, 00:24:54.619 --> 00:24:56.819 and she put her trust in the God of Israel. 00:24:57.539 --> 00:25:00.859 And by faith, God transformed Rahab. 00:25:02.699 --> 00:25:06.659 And by God's grace, the greatest sinner can become the most honored saint. 00:25:07.879 --> 00:25:14.439 In Hebrews 11, Rahab occupies a place of honor alongside the giants of God's people. 00:25:15.259 --> 00:25:18.439 And you'll remember Rahab's courage in the city of Jericho. 00:25:19.479 --> 00:25:20.759 She risked her life. 00:25:20.759 --> 00:25:25.559 Rahab courageously protected the two Israelite men from the authorities. 00:25:26.599 --> 00:25:29.640 She was the equivalent of a Corrie ten Boom in Nazi Germany. 00:25:30.559 --> 00:25:34.019 She did not put her trust in the walls of the city, but on the God who is invisible. 00:25:35.420 --> 00:25:36.879 And God spared her life. 00:25:37.559 --> 00:25:40.000 And she is in the place of honor in Hebrews 11. 00:25:41.660 --> 00:25:43.859 And likewise, your background might be like Rahab's too. 00:25:44.940 --> 00:25:47.240 There are things in your past that you are ashamed of. 00:25:47.240 --> 00:25:51.839 And when you first professed Jesus, the wind was not at your back. 00:25:52.980 --> 00:25:57.299 You were a single fish swimming upstream when everyone was going in the opposite direction. 00:25:58.819 --> 00:26:00.000 You may have stood alone. 00:26:00.539 --> 00:26:05.079 You come from a house, a village, maybe even a country filled with those who hate God. 00:26:06.640 --> 00:26:11.940 And you are familiar with your friends and your family rejecting you for following Jesus. 00:26:12.900 --> 00:26:15.559 But if you are a Christian, you are a new creation. 00:26:15.559 --> 00:26:17.559 The old has passed away. 00:26:17.899 --> 00:26:19.740 God has transformed you like Rahab. 00:26:21.359 --> 00:26:24.799 And look at what God did in Rahab's life at the end of verse 5. 00:26:25.440 --> 00:26:30.179 We see eventually she turned from her sin and she became the wife of Salmon. 00:26:31.980 --> 00:26:33.879 Wouldn't you like to know the backstory of that relationship? 00:26:35.039 --> 00:26:36.279 It would make for a great book. 00:26:37.539 --> 00:26:39.740 Rahab, a redeemed bride. 00:26:39.740 --> 00:26:41.440 Oh, friends. 00:26:42.079 --> 00:26:47.720 Salmon's love for a redeemed Rahab would be a faint echo of that love that Christ would show for his bride. 00:26:49.440 --> 00:26:53.420 But not only that, Rahab became the mother of the godly Boaz. 00:26:54.620 --> 00:26:57.460 What an illustration of God's grace to Rahab. 00:26:58.579 --> 00:27:00.519 Redeeming Rahab's family history. 00:27:00.519 --> 00:27:07.660 Friend, no matter perverts, thieves, outcasts, blasphemers, terrorists. 00:28:08.400 --> 00:28:12.300 We don't minimize these sins, but God brings good news to the guilty rebel. 00:28:13.340 --> 00:28:18.980 As William Tyndale first translated the word gospel, these are glad tidings to the guilty. 00:28:19.660 --> 00:28:24.740 You know, paraphrasing Spurgeon, the veil to the throne room of heaven has been torn. you also know that she also was an outsider. 00:29:47.399 --> 00:29:50.500 You know, in some ways, her life is an exact duplicate of Tamar. 00:29:50.500 --> 00:29:52.940 Both are childless widows. 00:29:53.599 --> 00:29:54.319 Both are vulnerable. 00:29:54.940 --> 00:29:55.599 Both are foreigners. 00:29:56.900 --> 00:30:01.940 And because they were foreigners, the law of Moses prohibited their entry into the assembly of God's people. 00:30:03.059 --> 00:30:03.859 They were outsiders. 00:30:05.579 --> 00:30:10.559 But in God's sovereign grace, Ruth, a Gentile, was brought into the family of God. 00:30:11.200 --> 00:30:12.720 She becomes a daughter of the king. 00:30:13.740 --> 00:30:18.140 And God's plan has always been to include the nations in the family of God. 00:30:18.140 --> 00:30:22.540 And Ruth became the grandmother of Israel's King David. 00:30:24.440 --> 00:30:25.800 You might be an outsider, too. 00:30:26.180 --> 00:30:27.780 You might not even have a family. 00:30:28.600 --> 00:30:32.520 But if you put your trust in Christ, you can be brought in the family of God. 00:30:34.100 --> 00:30:37.400 Christ would say the last would be first and the first would be last. 00:30:38.100 --> 00:30:41.960 Outsiders are being brought in while those who think they're insiders are being cast out. 00:30:41.960 --> 00:30:47.819 There are no unimportant people when God 00:30:58.340 And finally, the fourth outcast was Bathsheba. 00:30:59.880 --> 00:31:03.440 Now, Matthew refers to her as the wife of Uriah in verse 6. 00:31:03.440 --> 00:31:08.420 She is neither a prostitute nor is she a Gentile. 00:31:10.180 --> 00:31:13.019 Why is she an outsider? 00:31:14.120 --> 00:31:18.460 Well, I don't think it's because of her adulterous union with King David. 00:31:19.160 --> 00:31:20.920 I don't think the Bible holds that against her. 00:31:21.100 --> 00:31:22.519 You can read the circumstances of what happened. 00:31:23.299 --> 00:31:27.140 But I think Matthew referring to her as the wife of Uriah gives us a hint. 00:31:27.140 --> 00:31:33.740 Matthew is pointing to her status as an Israelite marrying a Gentile. 00:31:35.620 --> 00:31:39.520 Now, God prohibited Israelites from marrying Gentiles. 00:31:40.620 --> 00:31:44.320 Now, if you are a Christian, you should understand why this prohibition is in the Bible. 00:31:45.380 --> 00:31:46.900 It was not because of their ethnicity. 00:31:47.600 --> 00:31:51.360 After all, we see Salmon marrying Rahab, a Gentile Canaanite. 00:31:51.359 --> 00:31:58.419 Rather, it was because God knew that his people would be drawn away from him. 00:31:59.699 --> 00:32:04.799 If his people married Gentiles who worshipped pagan gods. 00:32:05.939 --> 00:32:07.740 Bathsheba ignored God's commands. 00:32:08.740 --> 00:32:10.359 And that would have made her an outcast. 00:32:11.679 --> 00:32:15.519 But like these other women, God had mercy on Bathsheba. 00:32:16.259 --> 00:32:17.899 God transformed her. 00:32:17.900 --> 00:32:22.180 She, like the other women, performs courageous acts as the mother of Solomon. 00:32:22.820 --> 00:32:24.019 And you can read them in 1 Kings. 00:32:24.780 --> 00:32:26.500 Now, all these women had a lot in common. 00:32:27.700 --> 00:32:30.440 These were all women who were the subject of gossip and rumors. 00:32:31.340 --> 00:32:33.160 Some of these women had shameful pasts. 00:32:33.519 --> 00:32:34.560 All of them were outsiders. 00:32:35.980 --> 00:32:41.780 But it is the outsiders at the edge of society that God has raised up in the Old Testament. 00:32:41.779 --> 00:32:48.639 It is no surprise that when Jesus came on the scene, outsiders flocked to him. 00:32:50.039 --> 00:32:54.759 God transforms them to be courageous and bold followers. 00:32:56.099 --> 00:32:58.220 Prostitutes received Jesus. 00:32:58.680 --> 00:33:00.119 The Pharisees rejected him. 00:33:00.759 --> 00:33:01.879 Outsiders brought in. 00:33:02.039 --> 00:33:03.079 Insiders cast out. 00:33:05.259 --> 00:33:08.160 Some of you are thinking, well, I'm glad they got their act together. 00:33:08.899 --> 00:33:10.399 But that misses the point. 00:33:10.400 --> 00:33:13.900 Jesus' genealogy is filled with Gentiles. 00:33:14.759 --> 00:33:16.500 And in the world's eyes, they were nobodies. 00:33:17.420 --> 00:33:18.740 God does not need the elite. 00:33:19.920 --> 00:33:22.060 He does not need the ones at the top of the tier. 00:33:23.860 --> 00:33:30.360 God loves to choose what is low and despised and weak in the world to accomplish sinners. 00:34:02.500 --> 00:34:13.659 The high and exalted one, Jesus, does not stay up in his ivory tower, writing self-help books, preaching down to the crowds, pick yourself up by your own bootstraps. 00:34:13.659 --> 00:34:15.359 No, he doesn't do that. 00:34:15.420 --> 00:34:16.619 He goes down to them. 00:34:17.019 --> 00:34:17.699 He eats with them. 00:34:17.839 --> 00:34:18.799 He dines with them. 00:34:19.759 --> 00:34:21.480 Even the chief of sinners he welcomes. 00:34:22.639 --> 00:34:26.460 Jesus would say he came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. arrested, beat, and imprisoned, and violently attacked Christians. 00:34:59.180 --> 00:35:00.780 Paul hated Jesus. 00:35:00.780 --> 00:35:04.720 But Jesus showed undeserved mercy. 00:35:05.740 --> 00:35:08.420 Grace was overflowing to Paul. 00:35:09.760 --> 00:35:12.720 And if you trust in him, that grace overflows to you too. 00:35:14.200 --> 00:35:20.680 Come to this all-sufficient Savior and
