And the whole Vision series, in fact, this is my ninth one I've 00:00:14.880 --> 00:00:22.140 led us through as a church. And for me, it just gets better and better. So we're almost 00:00:22.140 --> 00:00:26.660 at the end of this one, but this is a crucial one for us tonight on our Vision Sunday. And 00:00:26.660 --> 00:00:33.480 I want to begin our time together reflecting on the life of one of the greatest philosophical 00:00:33.480 --> 00:00:40.820 thinkers, one of the sharpest political minds, most gifted artists, and I suspect most quoted 00:00:40.820 --> 00:00:49.820 individuals of the past 100 years. Arnold Schwarzenegger was born the son of a low-ranking Austrian 00:00:49.820 --> 00:00:57.280 police officer and was destined for a life of just total obscurity until his hands wrapped 00:00:57.280 --> 00:01:03.920 around a barbell for the very first time at the age of 14. By 18, he was living in London 00:01:03.920 --> 00:01:09.620 and traveling the world competing in bodybuilding championships. And at one point, his coach, 00:01:09.680 --> 00:01:16.159 a guy named Wag Bennett, asked him, Arnie, what is it that you want to do with your life? 00:01:16.159 --> 00:01:24.259 And Wag said that the response of this 18-year-old was remarkable. He said, 00:01:24.340 --> 00:01:29.159 I want to be the richest and the greatest bodybuilder of all time. I want to live in the United States. 00:01:29.420 --> 00:01:34.120 I want to be an actor, a movie director, own an apartment block, and dabble in politics. 00:01:35.539 --> 00:01:42.019 As an 18-year-old, he saw the future, what he wanted, he just went for it. And Wag, as well 00:01:42.019 --> 00:01:49.060 as those who trained with Arnie and competed with Arnie, said that they had never met anyone 00:01:49.060 --> 00:01:55.280 who was so focused on what they want to achieve in the future. His training partner said that if 00:01:55.280 --> 00:01:59.599 you ever beat him at anything, he would look at you and say, you will never, ever do that again. 00:02:00.399 --> 00:02:03.840 And he said, doesn't matter how hard you're trying to man, what sort of training you put in, 00:02:03.879 --> 00:02:08.939 you could never beat Arnie at it again. He was so, so focused. 00:02:08.939 --> 00:02:16.159 And Jesus, in that passage that was just read out to us, tells a story, a similar story about a man 00:02:16.159 --> 00:02:22.859 who saw the future, saw what he needed to do. He just went for it. Just went for it. 00:02:23.560 --> 00:02:30.800 Have a look at it. You've got your service sheets there in front of you. Luke 16, verses 1 to 15. 00:02:31.199 --> 00:02:37.400 Look at verse 1. Jesus told his disciples there was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting 00:02:37.400 --> 00:02:42.240 his possessions. And so he called him in and asked him, what is this that I hear about you? 00:02:42.460 --> 00:02:47.319 Give an account of your management because you cannot be manager any longer. And the manager said 00:02:47.319 --> 00:02:53.520 to himself, well, what am I going to do now? My master has taken away my job. I'm not strong 00:02:53.520 --> 00:02:58.879 enough to dig and I'm ashamed to beg. I know what I'll do so that when I lose my job here, 00:02:58.879 --> 00:03:06.819 people will welcome me into their houses. Now in Jesus' time, this manager person here was like a 00:03:06.819 --> 00:03:13.979 chief operating officer and a chief financial officer rolled into the one. That is, they ran 00:03:13.979 --> 00:03:20.680 the entire estate of the wealthy owner. And what they also did was that they would get the owner's 00:03:20.680 --> 00:03:25.780 money and invest the owner's money as well. So they had a very, very high responsibility. 00:03:25.780 --> 00:03:32.379 And this manager, as it says, has been a bit dishonest and he hasn't been doing such a great 00:03:32.379 --> 00:03:40.639 job. And so he gets a termination notice. You're fired is his notice. And he knows now that he's in 00:03:40.639 --> 00:03:48.580 trouble. You see, when word gets around, he's not likely to get another manager's job. He's not likely 00:03:48.580 --> 00:03:54.479 to be in this kind of position again. And he's been sitting in an office for too long. His hands are 00:03:54.479 --> 00:04:02.659 beautiful. And he's thinking, I can't dig trenches for a living. I haven't got a strong enough back 00:04:02.659 --> 00:04:08.959 for that sort of stuff. And I'm not going to lie on myself. I can't go from this role down to begging. 00:04:09.519 --> 00:04:16.300 And what's more, there's no social services. There's no Centrelink to fall back on. And so for this man, 00:04:16.819 --> 00:04:21.699 this is a life and death decision. How's he going to live? How am I going to feed myself? Where's my food 00:04:21.699 --> 00:04:28.879 coming from? I'm going to get my housing. And so what he does is he makes a decision now that will 00:04:28.879 --> 00:04:36.120 pay benefits for the future. And that is the point of this whole parable. That's what it's all about. 00:04:37.300 --> 00:04:42.860 And what he does next though, is the bit of the parable that can be a little distracting. 00:04:43.759 --> 00:04:44.480 Verse five. 00:04:44.480 --> 00:05:12.120 Notice what the outcome is from his decision. 00:05:12.120 --> 00:05:17.000 It creates friendships that didn't exist before. 00:05:19.199 --> 00:05:24.740 In acting for the future, he won the favor and obligation of his master's debtors. 00:05:25.060 --> 00:05:28.519 And the really strange thing here is the master's response in verse eight says, 00:05:28.680 --> 00:05:32.860 the master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. 00:05:35.199 --> 00:05:36.680 It's an incredible response. 00:05:37.500 --> 00:05:41.720 Why would the owner commend the manager for his action here? 00:05:42.120 --> 00:05:44.519 I mean, it appears that he's ripped him off. 00:05:46.560 --> 00:05:52.420 But one of the best theories is that the manager here was doing what the tax collectors used to do 00:05:52.420 --> 00:05:58.199 in first century Palestine. And they would get the cut that the Romans required, and then they would add 00:05:58.199 --> 00:06:03.780 their percentage on top. And it's most likely that that's what this manager is doing here is part of 00:06:03.779 --> 00:06:08.259 his investment portfolio. He's investing his bosses. 00:06:08.259 --> 00:06:11.759 He's the owner of the estate's investments. 00:06:12.799 --> 00:06:15.359 And he's adding his percentage on top of it as well. 00:06:16.699 --> 00:06:19.559 He's getting his interest out of the investment. 00:06:19.560 --> 00:06:24.060 And so what he's doing here would appear that he's taking his investments off. 00:06:24.120 --> 00:06:25.680 He's removing his fees. 00:06:27.280 --> 00:06:31.980 And it makes his master's debtors happy. 00:06:33.300 --> 00:06:35.540 They're paying a much smaller bill. 00:06:35.540 --> 00:06:41.439 But he's also giving his master a great name in town at exactly the same time. 00:06:42.660 --> 00:06:45.100 So it's like he's getting nothing out of this deal now. 00:06:46.520 --> 00:06:49.920 Now, whether that's exactly how it worked is really, it doesn't matter. 00:06:49.960 --> 00:06:51.000 It's not the point of the parable. 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:59.980 But Jesus' point here is that this man is using his opportunity, his wealth, with an eye on the future. 00:07:01.199 --> 00:07:04.420 And the master commends him because he acted shrewdly. 00:07:04.480 --> 00:07:06.019 You made a great decision there. 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:08.839 A wise decision, a smart judgment. 00:07:08.980 --> 00:07:09.860 You're astute. 00:07:12.459 --> 00:07:16.860 But see the rebuke of the second half of verse 8. 00:07:16.860 --> 00:07:22.900 This shrewd, wise, astute action is one that Christians fail in. 00:07:22.980 --> 00:07:23.340 It says, 00:07:23.540 --> 00:07:30.340 For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are people of the light. 00:07:32.840 --> 00:07:38.259 Jesus is saying that this manager's actions, he's wiser. 00:07:38.639 --> 00:07:45.699 He's wiser in the youths of his wealth than his disciples are in theirs. 00:07:47.819 --> 00:07:52.379 So what we're going to do is we're going to take a moment here to learn a couple of lessons from this parable 00:07:52.379 --> 00:07:55.480 about what it might look like to be wise. 00:07:57.580 --> 00:08:02.759 The first thing we learn here is that Jesus likens us, his disciples, 00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:06.280 to a manager of someone else's estate. 00:08:07.580 --> 00:08:08.759 Someone else's money. 00:08:09.800 --> 00:08:14.720 The word manager here can also be easily translated as steward. 00:08:14.720 --> 00:08:17.320 So this man is a steward. 00:08:17.480 --> 00:08:19.440 He's a manager of someone else's money. 00:08:19.560 --> 00:08:21.420 He's a fund manager. 00:08:22.580 --> 00:08:24.360 When you manage someone else's money, 00:08:25.080 --> 00:08:29.640 you can't do whatever you want with that money because it isn't your money. 00:08:29.760 --> 00:08:32.840 You have to do it according to the terms of the person who owns the money. 00:08:33.360 --> 00:08:38.680 And so first up, Jesus is reminding his disciples that if you understand anything, 00:08:38.679 --> 00:08:44.000 if you understand that there is a God, then you'll know that whatever you have is in fact not yours. 00:08:45.359 --> 00:08:48.779 We are stewards of God's money, of his resources. 00:08:49.479 --> 00:08:52.779 And so the first thing is we've got to stop acting as if it's ours. 00:08:52.779 --> 00:08:55.459 That's pretty hard hitting. 00:08:57.459 --> 00:08:59.079 Because particularly in the Western world, 00:08:59.199 --> 00:09:03.720 we have a strong attachment to wealth and possessions 00:09:03.720 --> 00:09:07.259 because we've worked for it. 00:09:07.539 --> 00:09:10.639 We love the idea of the so-called self-made man. 00:09:12.120 --> 00:09:13.199 It's my money. 00:09:13.459 --> 00:09:14.339 I've worked hard for this. 00:09:14.399 --> 00:09:15.699 I've sacrificed for this. 00:09:16.819 --> 00:09:18.720 And Jesus says, no, it's not. 00:09:19.059 --> 00:09:19.699 It's not your money. 00:09:19.700 --> 00:09:25.640 If you're a Christian, there is a much bigger, broader theological context 00:09:25.640 --> 00:09:29.320 that you put this truth into. 00:09:30.320 --> 00:09:33.120 As Christians, we believe that God made everything, 00:09:33.300 --> 00:09:34.640 that he sustains everything. 00:09:35.400 --> 00:09:38.160 We have life and we have skills and we have opportunities 00:09:38.160 --> 00:09:41.120 that he has gifted each one of us with. 00:09:41.759 --> 00:09:43.980 They are gifts from him to us. 00:09:43.980 --> 00:09:52.240 And without those things, we would not make any money at all. 00:09:53.220 --> 00:09:56.240 Without the life that he gives us every day, 00:09:56.480 --> 00:09:59.680 and the Bible says he puts the breath in our lungs moment by moment, 00:10:01.060 --> 00:10:02.980 with that breath that he gives us, 00:10:04.120 --> 00:10:05.500 he gives us the ability to make money. 00:10:05.840 --> 00:10:08.759 And if he chooses not to give that to us, 00:10:08.820 --> 00:10:10.480 we have no ability to make money. 00:10:10.480 --> 00:10:15.180 Without life, it's extremely difficult to do anything. 00:10:19.159 --> 00:10:22.200 If you're healthy and you're able to work, that's a gift. 00:10:23.960 --> 00:10:26.860 The fact that you were born in this time and this place 00:10:26.860 --> 00:10:30.620 with its many opportunities, that's a gift. 00:10:30.620 --> 00:10:36.379 If you were born in the 12th century on a mountaintop in Tibet, 00:10:36.940 --> 00:10:41.320 you would think very differently about the resources that you have. 00:10:49.019 --> 00:10:53.759 And so we work hard for what we have with the life, 00:10:54.620 --> 00:10:57.899 the circumstances, the talents that God has given us. 00:10:57.899 --> 00:11:01.620 We are stewards of every gift from him. 00:11:02.340 --> 00:11:06.759 Listen to the prayer of the fabulously wealthy and powerful King David 00:11:06.759 --> 00:11:08.240 from 1 Chronicles 29. 00:11:08.919 --> 00:11:11.199 Everything in heaven and earth is yours. 00:11:11.959 --> 00:11:13.600 Wealth and honor come from you. 00:11:14.319 --> 00:11:15.579 You are the ruler of all things. 00:11:15.679 --> 00:11:18.659 Who am I and who are my people that we should be able to give 00:11:18.659 --> 00:11:19.779 as generously as this? 00:11:20.340 --> 00:11:21.799 Everything comes from you, 00:11:22.079 --> 00:11:25.819 and we have given you only what comes from your hand. 00:11:25.820 --> 00:11:30.520 All this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple 00:11:30.520 --> 00:11:34.340 for your holy name comes from your hand, 00:11:34.560 --> 00:11:36.640 and all of it belongs to you. 00:11:39.840 --> 00:11:41.980 So if we're stewards, it's not ours, 00:11:42.240 --> 00:11:44.860 and God calls us to be radically generous. 00:11:45.100 --> 00:11:48.620 And if we're not radically generous with the gifts that he's given us, 00:11:48.620 --> 00:11:52.279 that includes time, emotions, and everything else, 00:11:53.320 --> 00:11:55.560 then it's actually a lack of integrity in our hearts. 00:12:07.919 --> 00:12:09.820 Malachi 3.8 is pretty clear in this. 00:12:09.940 --> 00:12:10.179 It says, 00:12:10.179 --> 00:12:22.639 That is, the people in the Old Testament were told 00:12:22.639 --> 00:12:27.539 that 10% of their income needed to be given away as the starting point. 00:12:27.620 --> 00:12:29.039 That was the starting point. 00:12:30.379 --> 00:12:33.239 And I'm not convinced that the standards of the people in the New Testament 00:12:33.239 --> 00:12:34.299 are any lower, 00:12:35.000 --> 00:12:36.859 especially when we have a greater hope, 00:12:36.859 --> 00:12:39.899 a greater revelation, a greater grace, and greater benefits. 00:12:40.179 --> 00:12:47.519 However, if we do think that 10% as a starting point is a lot of money, 00:12:47.779 --> 00:12:50.179 then maybe we're thinking about it totally the wrong way. 00:12:50.219 --> 00:12:51.620 We've got this whole thing upside down. 00:12:53.059 --> 00:13:09.019 --> 00:13:09.740 The terms are this. 00:13:10.620 --> 00:13:11.519 Every year, 00:13:11.799 --> 00:13:16.639 you get to keep 90% of the returns from the investment, 00:13:17.019 --> 00:13:19.559 and you've got to give me 10% of the returns from the investment. 00:13:20.359 --> 00:13:21.479 Would you want that job? 00:13:25.019 --> 00:13:25.659 Come on. 00:13:25.739 --> 00:13:26.679 Would you want that job? 00:13:27.339 --> 00:13:28.899 Who wouldn't want that job? 00:13:29.699 --> 00:13:33.219 Every fund manager would kill someone else to get that job. 00:13:33.220 --> 00:13:34.840 In all seriousness. 00:13:37.420 --> 00:13:39.820 And that is exactly how generous God is. 00:13:40.460 --> 00:13:42.879 That is what God is offering us. 00:13:44.139 --> 00:13:46.279 00:14:23.860 use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourself 00:14:23.860 --> 00:14:25.079 so that when it is gone, 00:14:25.399 --> 00:14:27.220 you'll be welcomed into eternal dwellings. 00:14:28.259 --> 00:14:29.939 So what this manager does here 00:14:29.939 --> 00:14:34.740 is he puts aside some short-term financial gain 00:14:34.740 --> 00:14:36.659 for the sake of gaining something 00:14:36.659 --> 00:14:41.360 that is long-term and infinitely more valuable. 00:14:43.519 --> 00:14:45.419 And that's what a wise investment is. 00:14:45.559 --> 00:14:49.139 A wise investment is where you put your money 00:14:49.139 --> 00:14:52.779 into something that is going to increase in value over time. 00:14:54.319 --> 00:14:56.939 So what can you put your money into investment 00:15:16.379 --> 00:15:19.939 that is in this world 00:15:19.939 --> 00:15:21.620 that will last. 00:15:22.259 --> 00:15:23.039 Not one. 00:15:23.319 --> 00:15:24.480 There's no material for the argument 00:16:01.980 --> 00:16:03.279 for long-term investment. 00:16:03.919 --> 00:16:04.179 You know, 00:16:04.259 --> 00:16:05.039 immediate pain 00:16:05.039 --> 00:16:06.060 for long-term gain. 00:16:06.259 --> 00:16:08.019 I'm totally, 00:16:08.220 --> 00:16:09.879 totally in for that, 00:16:10.060 --> 00:16:10.460 logically. 00:16:11.639 --> 00:16:13.419 But what Jesus says next 00:16:13.419 --> 00:16:16.480 is what moves my heart 00:16:16.480 --> 00:16:18.440 and causes me 00:16:18.440 --> 00:16:19.500 to open my wallet. 00:16:20.019 --> 00:16:22.539 This is what moves my heart. 00:16:22.639 --> 00:16:23.740 And I hope it does for you too. 00:16:24.460 --> 00:16:27.379 Look at how Jesus describes 00:16:27.379 --> 00:16:29.120 eternal dwellings 00:16:29.120 --> 00:16:30.419 in verse 9. 00:16:30.620 --> 00:16:32.960 This is how he describes heaven. 00:16:35.299 --> 00:16:36.100 Friends. 00:16:39.100 --> 00:16:41.779 Use your money now 00:16:41.779 --> 00:16:43.700 to gain friends 00:16:43.700 --> 00:16:44.879 who will welcome you 00:16:44.879 --> 00:16:46.139 into eternal dwellings. 00:16:46.179 --> 00:16:46.860 In other words, 00:16:47.220 --> 00:16:49.659 to get eternal friends. 00:16:50.299 --> 00:16:51.879 Let me quote one commentator 00:16:51.879 --> 00:16:54.220 who wrote on this verse, 00:16:54.440 --> 00:16:55.340 and it's the main point 00:16:55.340 --> 00:16:56.139 of this whole parable. 00:16:57.019 --> 00:16:57.440 He wrote, 00:16:57.440 --> 00:16:58.720 although these things, 00:16:58.720 --> 00:16:59.400 your property, 00:16:59.540 --> 00:16:59.880 your ability, 00:17:00.000 --> 00:17:00.440 your time, 00:17:00.560 --> 00:17:03.360 belong to this life only. 00:17:04.500 --> 00:17:05.680 Jesus says, 00:17:05.680 --> 00:17:08.299 yet what will happen to you 00:17:08.299 --> 00:17:08.759 when, 00:17:08.759 --> 00:17:09.440 then, 00:17:09.560 --> 00:17:11.519 when you pass into that life 00:17:11.519 --> 00:17:13.980 will depend on what you are doing 00:17:13.980 --> 00:17:15.680 with them here and now. 00:17:16.640 --> 00:17:18.460 Make sure that your use of them 00:17:18.460 --> 00:17:20.160 brings you into a fellowship 00:17:20.160 --> 00:17:21.299 of friends 00:17:21.299 --> 00:17:24.019 which will survive beyond death. 00:17:24.019 --> 00:17:28.700 That is definitely what Jesus is saying 00:17:34.799 --> 00:17:37.180 it's the identity scorecard for us 00:17:37.180 --> 00:17:38.539 and the possessions that we have. 00:17:38.859 --> 00:17:41.160 But genuine security and significance 00:17:41.160 --> 00:17:43.119 is not material. 00:17:43.119 --> 00:17:45.059 It's actually relational. 00:17:46.619 --> 00:17:48.139 In the end, 00:17:48.959 --> 00:17:50.759 the most important thing 00:17:50.759 --> 00:17:51.979 that everyone needs 00:17:51.979 --> 00:17:52.799 is love. 00:17:54.039 --> 00:17:56.919 We feel truly wealthy 00:17:56.919 --> 00:17:59.299 when we are loving people
