in fact, have to participate in culture in one way or another. 00:00:48.219 --> 00:00:55.240 And the question for us is how is it that we do so as Christ would to advance the kingdom of God? for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings. 00:01:18.219 --> 00:01:25.299 We find in the previous chapters that Paul is talking about being set free from the law in Christ. 00:01:25.560 --> 00:01:31.620 And as such, he has the ability to live his life as he pleases. 00:01:32.480 --> 00:01:43.739 However, he would rather trade the liberties bought for him in Christ for the sake of the gospel and the greater joy of advancing the kingdom. 00:01:43.739 --> 00:01:54.879 So we've been talking about various topics and we're this morning going to discuss the issue of Christ and homosexuality. 00:01:55.640 --> 00:01:58.739 Kind of a hot topic these days, right? 00:01:58.799 --> 00:02:03.140 I'm told I should say something to get your attention and I think I already did. 00:02:03.379 --> 00:02:05.979 I don't think I really have to say too much more. 00:02:06.079 --> 00:02:09.819 There's certainly much heat about this topic right now. 00:02:09.819 --> 00:02:14.000 President Obama has recently come out and supported gay marriage. 00:02:14.120 --> 00:02:22.680 If you pay attention at all to blogs, you know that the president of Chick-fil-A made an anti-gay marriage statement, 00:02:22.819 --> 00:02:28.039 a stance for the company, which got way more publicity than I think it deserved. 00:02:29.039 --> 00:02:33.099 There are many laws in effect, and the repeal of laws, 00:02:33.099 --> 00:02:37.579 the most famous of which is the Defense of Marriage Act, passed in 1996, 00:02:38.139 --> 00:02:43.639 which defined marriage as the union between one man and one woman. 00:02:44.379 --> 00:02:48.680 In fact, this issue is much larger than it really should be in reality. 00:02:49.139 --> 00:02:51.740 A Gallup poll conducted in May of 2011 00:02:51.740 --> 00:03:01.319 found that American adults think that 25% of the American population is lesbian, gay, bisexual. 00:03:01.319 --> 00:03:09.500 American adults believe that 25% of the population practices this lifestyle, 00:03:09.639 --> 00:03:13.060 when in fact the estimate is more like 3.5%. 00:03:13.060 --> 00:03:20.060 However, we can't discuss just how it is that we ought to interact with the homosexual community, 00:03:20.120 --> 00:03:26.139 but how it is that we should interact with the community at large around this topic. 00:03:26.139 --> 00:03:30.000 Because it's become such a big issue, 00:03:30.500 --> 00:03:34.819 and because so many Christians have dealt with this issue poorly, 00:03:35.459 --> 00:03:42.899 there's a magnifying lens on the church, the American church, and certainly on ours. 00:03:43.979 --> 00:03:47.359 And because this has become such a large issue, 00:03:47.879 --> 00:03:52.659 we have to be so careful how we walk around it. being procreation, the companionship, 00:06:01.420 --> 00:06:07.920 but the great purpose is to serve as a shadow of what will someday become. 00:06:08.720 --> 00:06:10.120 So we see that to be the case of marriage. 00:06:10.220 --> 00:06:13.620 Marriage is meant to represent the beautiful union between Christ and the church. 00:06:14.560 --> 00:06:18.100 We know that our marriages as Christians chapter 3, toward the end, we see Hosea go to the marketplace and buy his wife out of slavery. 00:09:28.039 --> 00:09:29.759 It's a great picture of the gospel. 00:09:29.759 --> 00:09:32.399 You see
