It was a Sunday afternoon and people had gathered in the city, in the 00:01:17.700 --> 00:01:26.420 town centre, at the war memorial for a Remembrance Day ceremony. Eleven people were killed, 63 00:01:26.420 --> 00:01:33.159 were injured. It became known as the Poppy Day Massacre. The youngest to die that day was 00:01:33.159 --> 00:01:42.659 a young lady by the name of Marie Wilson. She'd just recently qualified as a nurse. After the 00:01:42.659 --> 00:01:49.900 bomb went off, Gordon Wilson, Marie Wilson's father, lay under the rubble and shouted to 00:01:49.900 --> 00:02:02.219 his daughter, are you all right? She found his hand and said, is that your hand, Dad? He said, 00:02:02.219 --> 00:02:14.620 are you all right? And she said, yes. He asked her for a fifth time, are you all right? And she said, Daddy, 00:02:14.620 --> 00:02:26.860 I love you very much. And those were the last words that she spoke. Hours later, Gordon Wilson gave an interview 00:02:26.860 --> 00:02:36.700 with the BBC. I remember as a kid watching it on TV that night. He described with anguish in front of the cameras, 00:02:37.900 --> 00:02:45.340 the conversation with his daughter and his feelings towards her killers. She held my hand tightly, he said, 00:02:45.660 --> 00:02:56.300 and gripped it as hard as she could. She said, Daddy, I love you very much. Those were her exact words to me. 00:02:56.860 --> 00:03:07.740 And those were the last words I ever heard her say. And then, to the astonishment of his listeners, Wilson said these words, 00:03:07.740 --> 00:03:22.700 but I bear no ill will. I bear no grudge. Dirty sort of talk of revenge is not going to bring her back. 00:03:22.699 --> 00:03:40.699 I will pray for these men tonight and every night. Historian Jonathan Barlin recounts new words in more than 25 years of violence in Northern Ireland had such a powerful emotional impact. 00:03:40.699 --> 00:03:47.579 A cup brimful of sweet water. 00:04:26.719 To that sort of quick and unconditional forgiveness? 00:04:26.720 --> 00:04:41.060 Perhaps tonight you are here and you are someone who knows the pain of losing a loved one like Gordon Wilson at the hands of the evil acts of another person or group. 00:04:41.940 --> 00:04:49.220 And I'm sure you know only too well how deep Gordon Wilson would have to have dug to say those words. 00:04:49.220 --> 00:04:54.880 And to live them out in the days and weeks and years that followed. 00:04:55.840 --> 00:05:02.840 But for the majority of us here, I imagine that the offenses that we forgiveness of our neighbor. 00:06:40.920 --> 00:06:43.020 And it's in this passage in Matthew chapter 18 00:06:43.020 --> 00:06:46.180 that Jesus helps us with this issue of forgiveness. 00:06:47.120 --> 00:06:51.200 In fact, it is in this parable that we learn how Gordon Wilson could offer 00:06:51.200 --> 00:06:54.580 such quick and unconditional forgiveness. 00:06:54.579 --> 00:06:58.979 Jesus utterly disproportionate forgiveness. 00:11:08.579 --> 00:11:10.479 Peter, stop counting. 00:11:11.439 --> 00:11:13.419 Numbers and records and lists 00:11:13.419 --> 00:11:17.039 are for people who
