God's judgment and chapters 7 and 8 go together as one story and so basically what that means is 00:00:23.899 --> 00:00:30.079 we're back into blood and guts territory again tonight as we have just heard as James read out 00:00:30.079 --> 00:00:39.759 to us all the people of AI are slaughtered 12,000 men and women are slaughtered it's a it's a massacre 00:00:39.759 --> 00:00:47.519 and on one level we're kind of used to massacres to a degree I mean we live in a in a world that 00:00:47.520 --> 00:00:58.920 as I read just very recently that since the end of World War II conflicts have trebled in number 00:00:58.920 --> 00:01:05.379 around our world and all sorts of things like you know Kenya and Syria and Somalia and just massacred 00:01:05.379 --> 00:01:10.780 hundreds of people dying all over the place and so on one level we're used to massacres even though 00:01:10.780 --> 00:01:17.420 we're repulsed by them but what makes this one particularly hard is that God is caught up in 00:01:17.420 --> 00:01:24.780 at all it's actually in fact on his orders and so the question that we have of texts like this as we 00:01:24.780 --> 00:01:33.219 did last week and Chris alluded to this is what sort of God does that make him that I think is the 00:01:33.219 --> 00:01:39.460 struggle that we have with this text the early sections of Joshua with the conquest of the land 00:01:39.459 --> 00:01:49.519 of Canaan what sort of God is this well the the prominent atheist the tele-evangelist for atheism 00:01:49.519 --> 00:01:56.479 Richard Dawkins has a little doubt on what sort of God this is he describes him in his book the God 00:01:56.479 --> 00:02:02.739 delusion on page 31 as the God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all 00:02:02.739 --> 00:02:10.460 fiction a jealous and proud of it a petty unjust unforgiving control freak a vindictive bloodthirsty 00:02:10.460 --> 00:02:19.959 ethnic cleanser a misogynist homophobic racist infants infanticidal genocidal filocidal pestilential 00:02:19.959 --> 00:02:29.620 megalomaniacal sadomacistic capriciously malevolent bully there's a whole lot of adjectives that are 00:02:29.620 --> 00:02:36.460 thrown together there some of which don't appear in the dictionary and it's the 00:02:36.460 --> 00:02:44.819 what Dawkins Dawkins's problem is that he he knows what he thinks God is like the God of the Old 00:02:44.819 --> 00:02:48.980 Testament and Dawkins's problem is not trying to understand God which is what we're trying to do 00:02:48.980 --> 00:02:52.200 here tonight Dawkins's problem is trying to understand people who try to understand God 00:02:52.200 --> 00:02:58.580 that's his problem and so this is just you know when you read that you hear that sort of stuff you 00:02:58.580 --> 00:03:04.420 think he's gone way over the top he's in fact offensive which is what he's deliberately trying 00:03:04.420 --> 00:03:10.980 to do in the God delusion he's trying to be offensive but as we face a chapter like this one 00:03:10.980 --> 00:03:18.260 that we're looking at here in in Joshua 8 however much we want to sort of back away from from a Dawkins 00:03:18.260 --> 00:03:26.280 and say that he's gone way over the top and we want to say that's in fact not my God we are still 00:03:26.280 --> 00:03:33.920 I think in our modern context a little embarrassed about these sorts of chapters we're a little bit 00:03:33.920 --> 00:03:40.780 uncomfortable with these chapters in fact if we you know jumping in to read the Bible the first time 00:03:40.780 --> 00:03:46.819 with people we don't normally suggest you start at places like Joshua we go with more sort of you 00:03:46.819 --> 00:03:53.680 know the birth of Jesus and work through the Gospels a year ago sorry a number of years ago a lady I know 00:03:53.680 --> 00:03:58.700 rejected Christianity she'd become a Christian a couple of years earlier threw herself into the 00:03:58.700 --> 00:04:05.520 life of the church and she rejected Christianity on the basis of reading Joshua 7 and 8 for the very 00:04:05.520 --> 00:04:12.439 first time and she did that preparing for a Sunday school lesson and I remember her coming to me 00:04:12.439 --> 00:04:16.019 what kind of God does this 00:04:16.019 --> 00:04:28.500 that's the question I think behind many questions about God what kind of God is he and surprisingly 00:04:28.500 --> 00:04:33.060 Joshua 7 and 8 don't just raise I think the question for us but actually come up with some of the answers 00:04:33.060 --> 00:04:38.579 too if you were here last week then you would have had like Joshua gone through the chilling episode of 00:04:38.579 --> 00:04:44.199 Achan sin in the camp the greed the theft the rejection of God's commands the exposure the 00:04:44.199 --> 00:04:51.300 humiliation the execution the pile of rocks and the burning of the bodies and and Joshua I think 00:04:51.300 --> 00:05:00.159 you know might have been wondering at that point who's next in fact what's next as Chris said it was 00:05:00.159 --> 00:05:05.159 good news up to that point victory after victory victory and all of a sudden boom this this encounter 00:05:05.160 --> 00:05:11.460 which just gutted the people of God and so the opening of chapter 8 is remarkably comforting and 00:05:11.460 --> 00:05:18.720 reassuring God says to Joshua do not be afraid do not be discouraged and the Lord said that to 00:05:18.720 --> 00:05:24.360 Joshua because understandably he was afraid he was discouraged what kind of God orders this 00:05:24.360 --> 00:05:31.420 after the events of chapter 7 perhaps he was wondering if God in fact was still angry with him 00:05:31.420 --> 00:05:36.400 you might know that feeling Chris in fact start off last week you know what it is to have someone 00:05:36.400 --> 00:05:44.860 really angry with you you remember that feeling someone really angry with you and what I find is 00:05:44.860 --> 00:05:50.900 not so much the person getting angry with me but it's the after effect it's the someone gets angry 00:05:50.900 --> 00:05:54.879 with you and you have that feeling of uncertainty every time you see them that maybe there's probably 00:05:54.879 --> 00:05:59.920 still that grudge there they've still got that issue with you they're brooding over the anger that is 00:05:59.920 --> 00:06:04.819 the feeling that the anger just continues and continues and continues and I suspect that my 00:06:04.819 --> 00:06:10.439 kids experience that for me sometimes I get angry with them about something and then you just can 00:06:10.439 --> 00:06:18.860 tell by the way they approach you afterwards for some time as to is dad safe is he still angry with me 00:06:18.860 --> 00:06:23.360 and you've got to kind of you know give them reassurance that it's all dealt with and stuff like that 00:06:23.360 --> 00:06:29.240 I think that we often talk in terms of three strikes and you're out make three mistakes and that's the end of the 00:06:29.240 --> 00:06:35.759 road for you and sometimes we even operate like that spiritually as if God is a one strike and you're out 00:06:35.759 --> 00:06:44.139 kind of God and so after the disaster in the judgment of chapter 7 God makes it clear that he's not that 00:06:44.139 --> 00:06:52.780 kind of God at all his anger with the death of Achan his anger is actually turned away 00:06:52.779 --> 00:07:01.500 and so he approaches his people with reassurance he's a God of grace he's a God of the second chance 00:07:01.500 --> 00:07:08.659 the you know 22nd chance of the 2222nd chance and so on and so on he is the God who embraces his 00:07:08.659 --> 00:07:15.199 people in spite of the mistakes and the sins and the flaws he's the God who delivers on his promise in 00:07:15.199 --> 00:07:24.039 spite of his people not deserving that promise his anger was satisfied with the death of Achan 00:07:24.039 --> 00:07:31.579 and now he brings a word of comfort and reassurance his generosity in his goodness and his grace is 00:07:31.579 --> 00:07:37.800 seen in fact in verse 1 as we continue on take the whole army with you and go up and attack Ai for I 00:07:37.800 --> 00:07:44.779 have delivered into your hands the king of Ai his people his city and his land you shall do to Ai and 00:07:44.779 --> 00:07:53.539 as king as you did to Jericho and his its king except that you may carry off their plunder and livestock for 00:07:53.539 --> 00:08:02.219 yourselves see what they're saying if only Achan had waited 00:08:02.219 --> 00:08:11.979 there was no need for the greed and the coveting of Jericho he could have freely enjoyed all of God's 00:08:11.980 --> 00:08:12.900 provision at Ai 00:08:12.900 --> 00:08:24.840 in Dale Ralph Davis's commentary on Joshua he has this intriguing phrase he uses to reflect on these 00:08:24.840 --> 00:08:32.220 verses he calls it serpent theology he's picking up the image of the serpent the devil in Genesis 3 00:08:32.220 --> 00:08:39.860 and serpent theology is thinking about God the way that the devil thinks about God as opposed to the 00:08:39.860 --> 00:08:45.820 way that God has revealed himself to us and part of sinful serpent theology is to put our attention on 00:08:45.820 --> 00:08:51.700 God's restrictions rather than his generous provision and that's what happens in Genesis chapter 3 in the 00:08:51.700 --> 00:08:57.940 garden of Eden the serpent's word to Eve do you remember it did God really say that you must not eat of 00:08:57.940 --> 00:09:03.580 any tree of the garden well no that's not what God said at all 00:09:03.580 --> 00:09:15.379 but the devil wanted Eve and he wants us to imagine that that's exactly what God said he focuses on our 00:09:15.379 --> 00:09:23.220 attention on what we can't do or what we shouldn't do as Christians rather than all that we enjoy as God's 00:09:23.220 --> 00:09:33.040 people have you found yourself borrowing serpent theology at all it it's the theology that paints God as a 00:09:33.039 --> 00:09:35.579 killjoy it puts the spotlight on the 00:09:35.579 --> 00:09:42.759 restrictions it it blinds us to the God who generously provides it ignores the 00:09:42.759 --> 00:09:48.839 beauty and the wonder and the provision and the perfection of the garden of Eden and it takes your attention off that and 00:09:48.839 --> 00:09:53.579 focuses on one restriction do not eat from the fruit of that tree 00:09:53.580 --> 00:10:07.960 Achan would have had every need met if only he had trusted every word that proceeded from the mouth of God and 00:10:07.960 --> 00:10:11.379 obediently waited but he didn't 00:10:11.379 --> 00:10:16.400 God never seeks to impoverish his people 00:10:16.399 --> 00:10:25.539 it is only as his people lose sight of his generosity his provision his goodness that the cancer of covetedness 00:10:25.539 --> 00:10:33.059 consumes them I actually think that recognizing God as a giving God is the prerequisite for our 00:10:33.059 --> 00:10:39.720 faithfulness we need to understand that he's a giving generous merciful God it's a prerequisite to 00:10:39.720 --> 00:10:46.500 faithfulness contentment with God's goodness is our antidote for faithlessness 00:10:46.500 --> 00:10:53.639 so what kind of God are you we can see he is a generous and he's a merciful God 00:10:53.639 --> 00:10:59.600 notice too that he is a sovereign God God's sovereignty is wonderfully displayed throughout this chapter 00:10:59.600 --> 00:11:03.160 he's the he's the one with all the battle plans he gives all the orders 00:11:03.159 --> 00:11:10.339 and yet it feels quite different than Jericho Jericho seemed more like a miracle than than AI if you like 00:11:10.339 --> 00:11:15.980 it begins with God's instruction in verse 2 set an ambush behind the city and then you watch all of 00:11:15.980 --> 00:11:23.339 Joshua's actions from chapter from verse 3 to 17 it is a classic lure and ambush strategy 00:11:23.339 --> 00:11:26.919 Joshua hides a bunch of blokes behind the city to set a trap 00:11:26.919 --> 00:11:33.839 and he grabs the rest of the blokes with him marches up to the front door knocks on the front door 00:11:33.839 --> 00:11:38.219 they open it blows some raspberries ticks them off they grab their army they come off after him and he 00:11:38.219 --> 00:11:44.419 retreats and they think oh this is fantastic we've just beaten the Israelites and we're gonna do it again 00:11:44.419 --> 00:11:51.419 so let's finalize the deal and they send out everyone against the Israelites and it leaves 00:11:51.419 --> 00:12:00.500 the city open and vulnerable and then we come to God's next instruction to Joshua in verse 18 00:12:00.500 --> 00:12:05.959 hold out towards AI the javelin that is in your hand for into your hand I will deliver the city 00:12:05.959 --> 00:12:12.439 so that's Joshua what he does he holds this stick this spear over there that's it that's the signal 00:12:12.439 --> 00:12:18.699 does his instruction it's the signal springs the trap defeats the king the army in the city of AI 00:12:18.700 --> 00:12:27.520 and when you read the story you notice that God is as every little bit as much in control and work here as he was in Jericho 00:12:27.520 --> 00:12:39.280 what kind of God is he he's a sovereign powerful God with the power of God the great Jericho could be taken 00:12:39.280 --> 00:12:45.480 without it the people of God couldn't even take the little outpost of AI 00:12:45.480 --> 00:12:54.300 how utterly dependent his people are upon him upon his generosity and his power 00:12:54.300 --> 00:13:00.980 so he's a God of generosity and goodness he's a God of sovereignty and power 00:13:00.980 --> 00:13:07.379 and so now we come back to let's deal with the elephant in the room 00:13:07.379 --> 00:13:19.200 it's hard to be to not notice God's awesome and destructive judgment in this chapter there is no denying it this this reads like a terrible massacre 00:13:19.200 --> 00:13:28.379 verse 24 when Israel had finished killing all the men of AI in the fields and in the desert where they had chased them and when every one of them had beaten put 00:13:28.379 --> 00:13:34.320 uh been put to the sword all the Israelites to return to AI and killed those who were in it 00:13:34.320 --> 00:13:38.879 12,000 men and women fell that day all the people of AI 00:13:38.879 --> 00:13:48.460 all of AI are dead and it's God it's people who are doing it under the orders of God 00:13:48.460 -->
