And then we saw last week the sacrifice of the incarnation. 00:02:26.240 --> 00:02:27.340 What Jesus left. 00:02:27.480 --> 00:02:31.400 What He set aside in order to become man. 00:02:32.040 --> 00:02:35.740 This week we're actually going to talk about the other side of that coin. 00:02:35.740 --> 00:02:40.719 Not so much what Jesus left, but what He entered into. 00:02:41.520 --> 00:02:44.020 The pain of the incarnation. 00:02:44.300 --> 00:02:47.260 The Christmas story is a beautiful one for sure. 00:02:47.259 --> 00:02:54.159 But it's not just about carols and candy and --> 00:03:04.099 John shows us some of that. 00:03:04.180 --> 00:03:08.319 We're going to look at some other passages that will highlight that reality 00:03:08.319 --> 00:03:10.599 as we consider the price Jesus paid. 00:03:10.699 --> 00:03:13.539 The pain that He endured for us. 00:03:13.539 --> 00:03:17.219 Let's start by reading the beginning of John 1. 00:03:17.319 --> 00:03:20.159 We're going to focus on verses 9 through 11 this morning. 00:03:20.459 --> 00:03:23.419 But let's read beginning at verse 1. 00:03:23.939 --> 00:03:25.579 God's holy word. 00:03:25.819 --> 00:03:28.719 In the beginning was the Word. 00:03:29.139 --> 00:03:30.680 And the Word was with God. 00:03:30.859 --> 00:03:32.539 And the Word was God. 00:03:33.299 --> 00:03:35.259 He was in the beginning with God. 00:03:35.819 --> 00:03:37.519 All things were made through Him. 00:03:37.599 --> 00:03:40.759 And without Him was not anything made that was made. 00:03:40.759 --> 00:03:42.780 In Him was life. all might believe through Him. 00:04:00.500 --> 00:04:05.159 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. 00:04:05.159 --> 00:04:09.840 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 00:04:10.759 --> 00:04:12.579 He was in the world. 00:04:13.079 --> 00:04:17.000 And the world was made through Him, yet the world did not know Him. 00:04:17.899 --> a sudden 00:05:26.000 --> 00:05:28.220 destruction hit. 00:05:28.819 --> 00:05:35.980 We remember watching those horrific events unfold, seeing scenes of devastation around the 00:05:35.980 --> 00:05:44.360 Twin Towers, flames billowing out of the building, smoke, debris all over the place. 00:05:44.620 --> 00:05:51.879 Both skyscrapers crashing down just in the matter of a couple of hours, perhaps some 00:05:51.879 --> 00:05:55.920 of the most traumatic events most of us have ever witnessed. 00:05:56.920 --> 00:06:03.519 And perhaps as we saw those images that morning, the most heartbreaking may be the crowds of people 00:06:03.519 --> 00:06:12.100 fleeing away from, in every direction they could, away from that death and destruction that 00:06:12.100 --> 00:06:17.160 was going on, running as fast as they could covered in the debris. 00:06:18.740 --> 00:06:23.960 But even in the beginning, and certainly we heard a lot more stories come out in the weeks 00:06:23.960 --> 00:06:28.280 later, there were those who we saw running in the other direction. 00:06:29.240 --> 00:06:38.140 First responders, firefighters, NYPD officers, others who were there, emergency personnel, who 00:06:38.139 --> 00:06:41.199 were running in the opposite direction of the crowds. 00:06:41.319 --> 00:06:47.919 They were running toward the pain, towards that devastation and destruction that was happening. 00:06:48.039 --> 00:06:49.159 They dove into the rubble. 00:06:49.300 --> 00:06:53.459 They came out covered in dust and blood and sweat. 00:06:54.740 --> 00:06:58.620 Time and again, they went back in to rescue anyone they could, right? 00:06:58.620 --> 00:07:07.139 You know that many of those first responders died that day in their efforts to save others. 00:07:07.579 --> 00:07:16.360 Of the nearly 3,000 people who died there that day, over 400 were rescue workers who had run 00:07:16.360 --> 00:07:18.899 towards the towers from their place of safety. 00:07:19.019 --> 00:07:22.199 They'd run into danger to help. 00:07:23.399 --> 00:07:27.639 There were many more than that who had their lives turned upside down, never the same having 00:07:27.639 --> 00:07:30.979 walked through that, even though they survived. 00:07:31.500 --> 00:07:34.819 And we hail these people as heroes, don't we? 00:07:35.699 --> 00:07:37.579 We talk about them often. 00:07:37.740 --> 00:07:39.899 We remember them and what they've done. 00:07:39.979 --> 00:07:41.579 Because what was heroic? 00:07:43.079 --> 00:07:47.279 It was that it was so easy and obvious to see where the danger was. 00:07:47.860 --> 00:07:51.279 The danger, the pain, the devastation, it was clearly there. 00:07:51.599 --> 00:07:56.539 And rather than running in the other direction, as many understandably were doing, 00:07:56.540 --> 00:08:01.260 they chose to run into the pain. 00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:09.800 They purposefully ran toward pain to help others, even if they were hurt themselves. 00:08:11.400 --> 00:08:16.480 That's just one picture of what Jesus is doing in the incarnation. 00:08:16.480 --> 00:08:24.400 When he becomes flesh, fully aware of the danger and destruction that are before him, 00:08:24.740 --> 00:08:28.180 Jesus runs toward the pain. 00:08:29.379 --> 00:08:36.300 I think that's an interesting reality for us to contemplate because I tend, by nature and 00:08:36.300 --> 00:08:40.800 by choice, to avoid pain and suffering at all costs. 00:08:40.799 --> 00:08:48.399 It's not just because I'm a wimp to the point that I don't even like getting flu shots, which 00:08:48.399 --> 00:08:49.079 is true. 00:08:50.099 --> 00:08:56.139 But I also design my whole life around avoiding pain and suffering. 00:08:56.939 --> 00:08:59.939 I want to be comfortable and predictable. 00:09:00.819 --> 00:09:03.579 I want to be away from all the mess and the chaos around me. 00:09:03.599 --> 00:09:07.699 I want life to go the way it's supposed to, which is the way that I plan it. 00:09:07.700 --> 00:09:17.660 Don't we design our schedules, our neighborhoods, our finances, even our parenting around avoiding 00:09:17.660 --> 00:09:19.080 pain and suffering? 00:09:21.100 --> 00:09:27.800 Maybe like me, you only take on projects you're good at so that you can avoid the pain of failure. 00:09:28.820 --> 00:09:33.180 I used to avoid roller skating rinks as a kid because I was terrible. 00:09:33.379 --> 00:09:37.540 And now as an adult, I avoid house projects for the same reason. 00:09:37.980 --> 00:09:39.340 I'm not good at it. 00:09:39.400 --> can avoid the pain of just mess, of draining conversations and time-consuming people that you just don't want to get involved with. 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:19.120 Maybe you try to make enough money to avoid any pain that does come along by buying the best treatment to take care of it. 00:10:19.879 --> 00:10:22.860 There are lots of ways to avoid pain and suffering. 00:10:23.200 --> 00:10:30.940 Many of us tend to do it by activity, by getting so busy with things we think we can control or have success in, 00:10:30.940 --> 00:10:35.940 that we'll just busy ourselves so we don't have to acknowledge the difficulty. 00:10:36.840 --> 00:10:39.400 You can also do it by inactivity, can't you? 00:10:40.220 --> 00:10:50.160 Just checking out on Netflix or on the computer and ignoring the difficult conversation across the room or across town. 00:10:51.160 --> 00:10:52.780 I'm just going to check out. 00:10:52.779 --> 00:10:56.399 I don't want to deal with the pain, the suffering of the world around me. 00:10:56.799 --> 00:11:04.079 I hold on so tightly to comfort and plan to steer clear of any pain every chance I get. 00:11:05.980 --> 00:11:10.240 See, when John tells us that the Word became flesh, 00:11:10.679 --> 00:11:17.120 it's not merely that Jesus sacrificed the glories and the riches and the status of heaven, 00:11:17.120 --> 00:11:22.419 although what an incredible sacrifice that he gave those things up. 00:11:23.639 --> 00:11:31.820 But even more, he left those comforts to run into enemy territory, as it were, 00:11:32.740 --> 00:11:37.820 knowing that there would be great cost, great pain on a number of levels. 00:11:38.659 --> 00:11:42.779 We're going to do this the same way we did last week as we considered his sacrifice. 00:11:42.779 --> 00:11:47.220 First, considering how Jesus did this in his incarnation. 00:11:48.639 --> 00:11:51.539 Then we'll ask what that means for us. 00:11:52.639 --> 00:11:58.919 And finally, return to the uniqueness of his incarnation that wins our hearts. 00:12:00.360 --> 00:12:05.379 So what was the pain that Jesus ran toward in the incarnation? 00:12:05.779 --> 00:12:07.399 Can we define it a little bit? 00:12:07.399 --> 00:12:13.100 First, John tells us that Jesus enters the world. 00:12:13.699 --> 00:12:19.079 A world, in fact, that he was in, but the world did not know him. 00:12:19.360 --> 00:12:20.179 Verse 10. 00:12:21.360 --> 00:12:26.100 Yes, it's the world that he made, but now it's not that perfect world anymore. 00:12:26.240 --> 00:12:29.199 It's not the way he originally made it. 00:12:29.240 --> 00:12:34.120 It's a fallen world that doesn't even recognize its creator anymore. 00:12:34.120 --> 00:12:37.159 It's broken in many ways. 00:12:37.659 --> 00:12:41.200 Suffering is everywhere around us. 00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:46.919 When John uses the word world, it often has a negative connotation. 00:12:47.159 --> 00:12:51.799 It's broken and in rebellion against the creator king. 00:12:51.980 --> 00:12:55.759 It's a place that didn't know him, that didn't love him. 00:12:56.560 --> 00:12:59.799 That's the world into which Jesus comes. 00:12:59.799 --> 00:13:10.459 And that in itself is part of the pain, the humiliation, the lowering of Jesus from creator of all to tiny baby. 00:13:12.099 --> 00:13:19.599 But as a result of the world's rebellion, this baby is entering a world now full of suffering. 00:13:19.600 --> 00:13:29.800 Isaiah 53 is a great prophecy of the coming Christ where he's depicted as a suffering servant. 00:13:30.639 --> 00:13:32.240 Verse 3 says it this way. 00:13:32.240 --> 00:13:42.500 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, familiar with suffering. 00:13:43.080 --> 00:13:45.080 Some versions translate. 00:13:45.080 --> 00:14:00.680 A man of sorrows, acquainted with grief, familiar with suffering, weeping, thirsting, hungering, hurting. 00:14:01.180 --> 00:14:05.540 These things were not a part of his existence in heaven. 00:14:06.240 --> 00:14:13.240 But they become everyday realities for the son of man who has no place to lay his head. 00:14:13.240 --> 00:14:16.740 He will experience all sorts of things. 00:14:16.860 --> 00:14:18.039 Unjust leaders. 00:14:19.600 --> 00:14:21.639 Betrayal by friends. 00:14:22.460 --> 00:14:24.779 The death of loved ones. 00:14:25.899 --> 00:14:30.720 Things that were not meant to be a part of his good creation. 00:14:31.820 --> 00:14:42.139 And Jesus sees that billowing cloud of smoke and he runs toward the pain of humiliation and suffering that he knows is there. 00:14:43.240 --> 00:14:45.560 But there's another pain. 00:14:45.659 --> 00:14:47.860 Jesus knows he's running into. 00:14:48.740 --> 00:14:50.180 The pain of rejection. 00:14:51.200 --> 00:14:52.759 Look at John 1.11. 00:14:53.399 --> 00:15:00.460 He came to his own and his own people did not receive him. 00:15:01.500 --> 00:15:03.259 Yes, the world hated him. 00:15:03.940 --> 00:15:05.899 Stood in rebellion against him. 00:15:05.899 --> 00:15:09.480 But now he comes to the people who are supposed to be God's friends. 00:15:10.079 --> 00:15:13.279 Who have been praying and longing for his coming. 00:15:13.559 --> 00:15:16.659 And by and large they reject him too. 00:15:18.840 --> 00:15:20.659 Isaiah says it as well. 00:15:21.539 --> 00:15:22.840 He was despised. 00:15:23.480 --> 00:15:25.019 Rejected by men. 00:15:25.399 --> 00:15:26.819 He was despised. 00:15:27.199 --> 00:15:30.860 And we esteemed him not. 00:15:30.860 --> 00:15:33.019 despised. 00:15:33.200 --> 00:15:34.080 Rejected. 00:15:34.779 --> 00:15:38.279 I think we all know the pain of those things, don't we? 00:15:38.800 --> 00:15:41.340 We've experienced those in different ways. 00:15:41.600 --> 00:15:44.180 But add to that the disappointment. 00:15:45.039 --> 00:15:49.340 That these were the ones who should have welcomed him and wrath and rejection of a holy God towards sin and rebellion. 00:16:54.000 --> 00:16:55.360 And he cries out what? 00:16:55.360 --> 00:16:59.500 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? 00:17:04.319 --> 00:17:06.880 So as we've been considering this morning, 00:17:07.019 --> 00:17:09.700 Jesus was born not merely to live, 00:17:09.860 --> 00:17:12.380 but quite purposefully to die. 00:17:13.140 --> 00:17:18.279 The pain of death itself as a result of the rejection of the people 00:17:18.279 --> 00:17:19.860 was certainly daunting. 00:17:19.859 --> 00:17:26.119 It wasn't for Jesus merely a possibility when he entered the world, 00:17:26.159 --> 00:17:30.679 as it would have been for those first responders who were risking their lives 00:17:30.679 --> 00:17:32.559 to go in after others. 00:17:32.719 --> 00:17:36.199 For Jesus, it was an absolute certainty. 00:17:36.699 --> 00:17:38.799 He came to die. 00:17:38.799 --> 00:17:43.119 We've seen him in Luke as we've been studying over the last few months. 00:17:43.119 --> 00:17:48.159 Set his face to Jerusalem and a cross and tell his disciples, 00:17:48.460 --> 00:17:49.639 I must go there. 00:17:50.019 --> 00:17:51.519 This is why I've come. 00:17:51.779 --> 00:17:53.079 He's not unclear, is he? 00:17:53.899 --> 00:17:58.879 He came to live, but he's headed to a cross because he came to die. 00:17:58.880 --> 00:18:01.940 Let's read more of Isaiah 53. 00:18:02.360 --> 00:18:09.540 Isaiah describes this king is coming for a reason that we just heard James sing about. 00:18:10.100 --> 00:18:13.220 He comes to be pierced for our transgressions. 00:18:13.540 --> 00:18:15.240 He was crushed for our iniquities. 00:18:15.780 --> 00:18:18.820 Upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, 00:18:18.980 --> 00:18:21.800 and with his wounds we are healed. 00:18:21.799 --> 00:18:24.220 All we like sheep have gone astray. 00:18:24.480 --> 00:18:26.759 We have turned everyone to his own way, 00:18:26.899 --> 00:18:30.299 and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 00:18:31.279 --> 00:18:33.480 He was oppressed and he was afflicted, 00:18:33.879 --> 00:18:35.619 yet he opened not his mouth. 00:18:36.399 --> 00:18:38.559 Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, 00:18:38.720 --> 00:18:41.299 and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, 00:18:41.879 --> 00:18:43.740 so he opened 00:18:58.200 --> 00:19:01.419 and with a rich man in his death. 00:19:03.179 --> 00:19:05.899 Jesus knew this prophecy. 00:19:06.779 --> 00:19:09.539 It may not sound like a Christmas one to you, 00:19:10.779 --> 00:19:15.919 but there are words here that can note physical agony, 00:19:16.599 --> 00:19:19.259 the painful death of the cross. 00:19:19.559 --> 00:19:22.839 There are words here that remind us again of the emotional agony 00:19:22.839 --> 00:19:24.339 we were just talking about, 00:19:24.700 --> 00:19:27.159 the cursed death of the cross, 00:19:27.279 --> 00:19:29.579 receiving the curse of his father. 00:19:31.259 --> 00:19:35.740 And Jesus, just imagine him as he's sitting in heaven 00:19:35.740 --> 00:19:38.139 with the glories of heaven around him, 00:19:38.419 --> 00:19:42.740 in this perfect, intimate relationship with his father, 00:19:42.740 --> 00:19:46.720 the riches of all the world at his fingertips, 00:19:47.120 --> 00:19:49.620 and he reads this prophecy. 00:19:50.819 --> 00:19:51.779 He's told, 00:19:52.279 --> 00:19:55.480 this is what the Messiah will endure. 00:19:56.200 --> 00:19:57.440 And he says, 00:19:58.019 --> 00:19:59.960 I'll go. 00:20:02.759 --> 00:20:03.920 I'll rescue them. 00:20:03.920 --> 00:20:07.160 I'll walk into that. 00:20:08.160 --> 00:20:13.279 And Jesus runs toward our pain, 00:20:13.940 --> 00:20:17.340 fully
