chapter 28 and verse 12, 00:07:54.540 --> 00:07:55.319 there it says, 00:07:55.439 --> 00:07:59.640 the Lord will open to you his good treasury, the heavens. 00:08:00.480 --> 00:08:04.240 He says he'll open his good treasury, his storage, 00:08:04.760 --> 00:08:07.820 if we put our trust in him and look to him. 00:08:08.200 --> 00:08:11.800 He's able to provide for all of our needs. 00:08:12.660 --> 00:08:14.520 When you think of the car key, 00:08:15.100 --> 00:08:19.400 when we think of going on a journey to go to a place without that key, 00:08:19.520 --> 00:08:20.560 we can't will show you the way. 00:08:38.639 --> 00:08:41.500 When we come to him through his word, 00:08:41.620 --> 00:08:45.980 he shows us the way and directs us in the way to go. 00:08:46.539 --> 00:08:48.179 And then you think of the house key. 00:08:48.179 --> 00:08:49.879 And God says, 00:08:50.039 --> 00:08:51.059 I've got a house. 00:08:51.579 --> 00:08:52.559 I've got a house, 00:08:52.620 --> 00:08:53.879 he says in John 14, 00:08:53.979 --> 00:08:55.299 that's got many rooms. 00:08:56.059 --> 00:09:00.120 There's a place for you if you put your trust in me. 00:09:00.879 --> 00:09:04.599 And he says to us that the way to get into this house, 00:09:05.079 --> 00:09:06.199 the key to getting in, 00:09:06.679 --> 00:09:07.659 is through Jesus, 00:09:08.019 --> 00:09:08.459 who says, 00:09:08.579 --> 00:09:09.239 I am the way, 00:09:09.359 --> 00:09:09.979 the truth, 00:09:10.399 --> 00:09:11.339 and the life. 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:15.000 So we've got all these keys that are important for us 00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:16.820 to have in life. 00:09:17.539 --> 00:09:19.240 But we've got more important keys, 00:09:19.379 --> 00:09:19.480 too, 00:09:19.539 --> 00:09:21.600 that God gives us access to. 00:09:22.019 --> 00:09:23.840 The stores of his house, 00:09:24.159 --> 00:09:26.980 the abundance of good things he's able to give us, 00:09:27.039 --> 00:09:28.960 the direction he's able to show us, 00:09:28.960 --> 00:09:31.680 and the promise of a great house, 00:09:32.259 --> 00:09:35.379 a place that we will be forever with him. 00:09:35.980 --> 00:09:37.400 And he assures us, 00:09:37.460 --> 00:09:38.620 unlike this world, 00:09:39.000 --> 00:09:41.320 where things can be stolen from us, 00:09:41.560 --> 00:09:43.340 that when we trust --> 00:29:14.980 We continue our study in this letter of 1 Peter, writing to a people who had been scattered and suffering for their faith. 00:29:16.059 --> 00:29:25.740 And what we've seen so far in the letter is how Peter has given them great reminders of the blessings and promises that they have in Christ. 00:29:25.740 --> 00:29:41.200 He reminds them, too, that there is a promise of great hope in Christ Jesus. 00:29:41.980 --> 00:29:47.059 He reminds them that they are to live holy lives. 00:29:47.059 --> 00:29:54.480 And he reminds them, as we saw the last time, that they are to keep their the setting, the situation that people are living in, it can be quite hard for us to understand just how they could do this. 00:30:13.779 --> 00:30:17.059 And how Peter could be saying this. 00:30:17.220 --> 00:30:28.240 In the midst of being mistreated, in the midst of God's word being trampled upon, they are being told to live holy lives. 00:30:28.940 --> 00:30:31.019 Being honorable to see the way in the situation that they were living on, when God's word is being trampled upon, 00:31:00.680 --> 00:31:07.120 and we see the world in which we live in today, we think of the live in days of peace when God is honored and worshipped by many people and nations. 00:31:32.200 --> 00:31:35.580 But what about when that is not the case? 00:31:36.480 --> 00:31:46.400 How do we conduct ourselves today when we maybe feel dismayed and anxious about the direction our nation or the world is going in? 00:31:46.400 --> 00:31:52.720 Well, this is the very subject that Peter is addressing for us here. 00:31:52.720 --> 00:31:56.140 For the people then and for ourselves today. 00:31:56.980 --> 00:32:01.300 And we remember that as he was writing to the people then and to ourselves, 00:32:01.820 --> 00:32:07.580 it's not just a case of living honorable lives merely to survive in this world, 00:32:08.000 --> 00:32:09.620 but to thrive. 00:32:10.780 --> 00:32:15.880 And that the gospel would thrive in our world as well. 00:32:16.400 --> 00:32:20.900 Last time we were looking at this last section, 00:32:21.019 --> 00:32:24.680 we were thinking of living honorable lives among the Gentiles. 00:32:24.800 --> 00:32:33.759 It was a kind of broad view of theological reasons and practical principles for living in this way. 00:32:34.480 --> 00:32:40.680 He spoke about being a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, all of these things. 00:32:40.680 --> 00:32:51.740 But now as we go on, he's going into specific ways in different areas of life where we are to conduct ourselves in this way. 00:32:51.799 --> 00:33:01.960 And he begins here with how Christians then and now are to live and behave with those in authority over us. 00:33:01.960 --> 00:33:05.299 And it's a great challenge. 00:33:05.740 --> 00:33:08.380 I'm sure I don't have to say that to you today. 00:33:08.640 --> 00:33:10.740 It's a great challenge. 00:33:11.240 --> 00:33:21.660 How we live and conduct ourselves among leaders who seemingly are going so far away from the word of God. 00:33:21.660 --> 00:33:29.160 It's one of the most challenging things for us when we see so much of the moral and social agendas today 00:33:29.160 --> 00:33:36.180 falling far below or even going directly against God's word and God's truth. 00:33:37.340 --> 00:33:40.880 So what's our response to be? 00:33:40.880 --> 00:33:49.740 Many people today will go one of two ways when it comes to being subject to authority. 00:33:51.500 --> 00:33:54.640 Some will go a way of capitulation. 00:33:55.200 --> 00:33:59.780 We'll just go along with whatever is said and told for us to do. 00:34:01.460 --> 00:34:05.240 Others will go to the other direction and pull away from it all. 00:34:05.820 --> 00:34:07.100 Withdraw from everything else. 00:34:07.500 --> 00:34:10.860 Hide away from it and live in a bubble, as it were. 00:34:10.880 --> 00:34:20.300 But what Peter is teaching us here and what other passages in the Scripture teaches us as well is that there's another way. 00:34:21.800 --> 00:34:27.559 And that is one where we become subject for the Lord's sake under every human institution. interested in a relationship, not in rules. 00:35:06.200 --> 00:35:07.740 But it's not biblical. 00:35:08.900 --> 00:35:12.700 From top to bottom, the Bible is full of commands. 00:35:13.860 --> 00:35:21.360 They aren't meant to stifle a relationship with God, but to protect it, seal it, and define it. 00:35:21.360 --> 00:35:25.660 Commands are there for a reason. 00:35:25.720 --> 00:35:30.519 Not to stifle a relationship with God, but to protect it. 00:35:31.519 --> 00:35:35.240 And in this we have a command from God in these verses. 00:35:35.420 --> 00:35:41.880 In verse 13, 00:36:09.000 --> 00:36:17.619 How should we live faithfully for Jesus Christ in such circumstances as this? 00:36:18.920 --> 00:36:22.320 Well, it begins with our attitude. 00:36:23.219 --> 00:36:32.119 When we look around the world today, there's a number of different types of governments and authorities ruling throughout the world. 00:36:32.679 --> 00:36:34.039 We have monarchies. 00:36:34.179 --> 00:36:35.039 We have parliaments. 00:36:35.039 --> 00:36:38.840 We have republics and other kinds too around the world. 00:36:39.820 --> 00:36:43.280 And we'll look around and we maybe have our own thoughts on which is best. 00:36:44.340 --> 00:36:46.820 Some we would say are better than others. 00:36:46.940 --> 00:36:49.679 But what's our attitude towards them? 00:36:51.019 --> 00:36:52.679 We may not like it. 00:36:53.539 --> 00:36:54.840 We may criticize. 00:36:56.219 --> 00:36:59.059 We may even rebel against certain authorities. 00:37:00.019 --> 00:37:02.900 But is that the right approach? 00:37:02.900 --> 00:37:10.579 Would we be right if we don't agree with something as Christians to stand with banners saying, 00:37:10.920 --> 00:37:11.680 Not my king. 00:37:12.460 --> 00:37:14.099 Or not my president. 00:37:14.920 --> 00:37:17.519 Is that what the scriptures teach us? 00:37:17.519 --> 00:37:24.139 No, because what we see in the scriptures is we are told that all authority is through God. 00:37:25.460 --> 00:37:28.099 Romans 13 says in verse 1, 00:37:28.099 --> 00:37:41.279 But you say, 00:37:41.279 --> 00:37:43.360 Surely that can't stand today. 00:37:43.920 --> 00:37:52.380 Surely that can't be right for today when our governments, our rulers are so far from God and things are heading in a worrying direction. 00:37:52.380 --> 00:37:55.200 Surely we don't agree with that. 00:37:56.640 --> 00:38:02.559 Well, when you look at when Paul was writing to the Romans or when Peter is writing here, 00:38:02.860 --> 00:38:06.660 you have to look at the context of the days that they were living in. 00:38:06.659 --> 00:38:14.420 And when we're looking at Peter here in writing to these people that had been scattered far and wide, 00:38:14.500 --> 00:38:16.099 what was the reason they were scattered? 00:38:17.719 --> 00:38:18.279 Persecution. 00:38:19.299 --> 00:38:21.559 Where did the persecution come from? 00:38:21.839 --> 00:38:24.219 It came from those who were ruling over them. 00:38:25.299 --> 00:38:27.579 Persecution arose against Christians. 00:38:28.299 --> 00:38:30.859 This was during the reign of Nero. 00:38:31.480 --> 00:38:33.079 He was the ruler of the day. 00:38:33.079 --> 00:38:41.639 And if you read and look into Nero, he was one who was cruel, very cruel against Christians. 00:38:43.099 --> 00:38:47.799 Persecution arose and verbal slander, social exclusion. 00:38:48.039 --> 00:38:50.759 Christians were suffering, but it got worse. 00:38:52.139 --> 00:38:55.159 It started to be widespread persecution. 00:38:56.380 --> 00:38:59.259 And this is the context that Peter is writing in. 00:38:59.260 --> 00:39:04.800 This is when he is saying, be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution. 00:39:06.360 --> 00:39:11.380 Peter, who was put to death himself during the reign of Nero. 00:39:12.760 --> 00:39:15.960 And you think, well, how can he be saying this? 00:39:17.460 --> 00:39:22.140 Well, Peter is showing that the people that authorities and rulers, good or bad, 00:39:22.580 --> 00:39:26.160 are human institutions put there by God. 00:39:26.159 --> 00:39:34.159 And because of that, our attitude should be one of thankfulness. 00:39:36.440 --> 00:39:38.460 Now you say, have you lost your mind? 00:39:39.920 --> 00:39:45.219 How can we be thankful for an emperor such as Nero, who was persecuting the church? 00:39:45.719 --> 00:39:55.099 How can we be thankful in our day and age when authorities and rulers over us are putting the word of God far, far away from public life? 00:39:55.099 --> 00:40:00.719 Well, to see our attitude is to be one like Christ. 00:40:01.739 --> 00:40:08.719 Peter is here saying, we should be thankful that even in the bad rulers we have over us, 00:40:08.960 --> 00:40:11.339 that God is above all. 00:40:12.440 --> 00:40:15.659 And that we have authorities and rulers over us, 00:40:16.059 --> 00:40:20.799 who, as we read here, the main purpose is to do good. 00:40:20.800 --> 00:40:28.960 In verse 14, governors are sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. 00:40:29.620 --> 00:40:35.660 The thing is, when we look around us and we say we don't agree with the people and authority over us, 00:40:35.960 --> 00:40:39.519 we have to remember it could be so much worse. 00:40:41.240 --> 00:40:46.519 What if there was no rule, no government, no authorities over us? 00:40:46.519 --> 00:40:48.280 What would life be like then? 00:40:49.759 --> 00:40:50.239 Chaos. 00:40:51.380 --> 00:40:56.480 You see it in Scripture when God gave people over to do what was right in their own eyes. 00:40:56.880 --> 00:40:58.980 It descended into chaos. 00:41:00.320 --> 00:41:06.039 So even when there's rulers over us who are wicked and evil in our eyes, 00:41:07.039 --> 00:41:10.219 we can still be thankful that God has people and places 00:41:10.219 --> 00:41:14.939 that keep even a semblance of control over things, 00:41:16.139 --> 00:41:21.639 that allow us to live our lives not always the way we would want to live, 00:41:22.639 --> 00:41:25.699 but even to have freedom to worship God, 00:41:26.379 --> 00:41:28.019 to have freedom to be witnesses, 00:41:28.719 --> 00:41:31.299 to show forth, as we were looking at the last time, 00:41:31.839 --> 00:41:35.259 to show forth, to proclaim the excellencies of him 00:41:35.259 --> 00:41:38.139 who called us from darkness to light. 00:41:38.139 --> 00:41:44.460 Peter was reminding the people here that even under the human institutions, 00:41:45.719 --> 00:41:49.039 that they still have God on their side. 00:41:49.859 --> 00:41:51.339 We can criticize, 00:41:52.539 --> 00:41:56.059 but how often do we pray for our leaders? 00:41:57.339 --> 00:42:02.480 How often do we pray for those locally, nationally, internationally, 00:42:02.480 --> 00:42:06.159 who are ruling over us or others throughout this world,
