00:03:42.880 --> 00:03:44.380 We're talking about the book of Luke. 00:03:44.800 --> 00:03:49.140 It seems like we've been in it for at least a year and a half, off and on. 00:03:49.360 --> 00:03:51.640 And we are only at chapter 10. 00:03:51.639 --> 00:03:54.019 And so we're going to look at chapter 10. 00:03:54.659 --> 00:03:57.119 Now, remember, Luke is one of the four Gospels. 00:03:57.619 --> 00:04:00.559 And it was written by a physician, a very intelligent man. 00:04:00.599 --> 00:04:06.959 He probably uses some of the best Greek in writing the language that the New Testament has. 00:04:07.739 --> 00:04:10.199 And Luke is basically writing to his friend. 00:04:10.259 --> 00:04:11.799 His friend's name is Theophilus. 00:04:12.359 --> 00:04:13.939 We don't know much about Theophilus. 00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:18.560 We know that he was probably a very wealthy and powerful individual in the Roman government. 00:04:18.560 --> 00:04:22.399 And Theophilus came to this struggle in his life. 00:04:22.939 --> 00:04:25.920 And he wanted to ask Luke, was Jesus real? 00:04:27.259 --> 00:04:30.879 Was Jesus really who people said he was? 00:04:31.220 --> 00:04:35.800 Did Jesus do everything that the disciples are talking about? 00:04:35.800 --> 00:04:38.680 Is he God? 00:04:39.740 --> 00:04:42.660 Is he worth giving my whole life to? 00:04:44.079 --> 00:04:46.460 Those are the questions that he was asking Luke. 00:04:46.520 --> 00:04:48.900 And those are the questions that Luke is trying to answer for him. 00:04:49.319 --> 00:04:55.560 And as I think about that, those are some of the same questions that you and I ask today, right? 00:04:55.560 --> 00:04:59.680 I mean, is Jesus really the only way? 00:05:01.280 --> 00:05:03.860 I mean, is he really doing writing in his Gospel to share with his friend and us about Jesus. 00:05:21.500 --> 00:05:25.459 Luke 10 is a very interesting passage. 00:05:25.600 --> 00:05:27.879 I was going through it this week, the last couple weeks. 00:05:27.980 --> 00:05:32.839 I felt like if I, to do it justice, I probably would have to talk for about three hours on it. 00:05:33.459 --> 00:05:37.259 Going through, because there's so many stories and pictures and nuances. 00:05:37.459 --> 00:05:38.920 And the words are very specific. 00:05:39.040 --> 00:05:41.019 They have a very specific meaning. 00:05:41.240 --> 00:05:42.300 But I'm not going to do that. 00:05:42.360 --> 00:05:43.240 So you're kind of going, whew. 00:05:44.040 --> 00:05:48.120 But I want to talk about this idea of what does it mean to be on mission? 00:05:48.120 --> 00:05:51.720 What does it mean for us as a church to exist? 00:05:53.420 --> 00:05:57.740 As I was praying through this message, I was reminded of this story of Hudson Taylor. 00:05:58.600 --> 00:06:02.019 Hudson Taylor was one of the great missionaries to China. 00:06:03.220 --> 00:06:06.879 And the story goes that Taylor was on this boat from Shanghai to Ningpo. 00:06:07.579 --> 00:06:12.180 And as he was on this boat, this junk, he was sharing with some friends. 00:06:12.180 --> 00:06:17.980 And he was sharing with this very elegantly dressed Chinese man named Peter. 00:06:18.980 --> 00:06:24.199 Peter wasn't a follower of Christ, but Peter was very interested in what Hudson Taylor had to say. 00:06:24.800 --> 00:06:30.660 And Hudson Taylor could tell that he was being convicted by God's Spirit to ask more and more questions. 00:06:31.160 --> 00:06:36.319 And as they were talking and as the boat was going on, it hit a lurch and Peter fell overboard. 00:06:37.120 --> 00:06:38.540 And he sank like a rock. 00:06:38.540 --> 00:06:47.439 And Hudson Taylor, to his surprise, looked around and no one jumped in. 00:06:47.520 --> 00:06:49.140 No one threw a life thing. 00:06:49.200 --> 00:06:50.300 No one stopped anything. 00:06:50.660 --> 00:06:55.540 And he started yelling, man overboard, man overboard in Chinese, because he could speak Chinese very well. 00:06:56.220 --> 00:06:57.759 And no one stopped. 00:06:57.759 --> 00:07:03.039 And so finally he ran up and he cut the rope on the sails of the junk. 00:07:03.099 --> 00:07:05.639 So the sails collapsed and the boat effectively stopped. 00:07:05.860 --> 00:07:09.839 And he jumped in the water and he dove and he dove trying to find Peter. 00:07:09.920 --> 00:07:13.120 And he 00:07:19.899 He looks over to the side of the shore and there's some fishermen in their boat fishing over there. 00:07:20.560 --> 00:07:23.479 And he yells to them, can you come help me, my friends, in the water? 00:07:23.539 --> 00:07:23.959 He's drowning. 00:07:24.060 --> 00:07:24.620 I need your help. 00:07:24.839 --> 00:07:25.879 Bring your nets right now. 00:07:25.939 --> 00:07:26.779 We can 00:07:34.120 We're catching fish. 00:07:34.739 --> 00:07:35.399 We can't do this. 00:07:35.699 --> 00:07:39.779 And Taylor was screaming at them and finally said, how can I get you over here? 00:07:39.779 --> 00:07:41.060 And the guys go, pay us. 00:07:44.279 --> 00:07:47.979 And so after a couple seconds of bartering, Taylor empties his pocket and he says, 00:07:47.980 --> 00:07:50.620 if you could have all of this, if you come right now to help me with my friend. 00:07:50.819 --> 00:07:54.720 And immediately the fishermen lifted up their nets and they came over and they dragged their net. 00:07:54.939 --> 00:07:57.140 And within less than a minute, they pulled up Peter's body. 00:07:59.200 --> 00:08:00.200 But it was too late. 00:08:03.879 --> 00:08:04.740 Peter had drowned. 00:08:07.939 --> 00:08:10.160 And Taylor stood there in disbelief. 00:08:12.140 --> 00:08:15.439 And he couldn't believe how people kept working. 00:08:17.980 --> 00:08:24.379 And were more concerned about their money and their livelihood than the drowning man. 00:08:27.400 --> 00:08:29.340 How do you feel when you hear that story? 00:08:34.060 --> 00:08:36.600 When I first heard it, I was so angry. 00:08:37.200 --> 00:08:38.600 I was so frustrated. 00:08:39.100 --> 00:08:40.680 I had experiences like that before. 00:08:40.779 --> 00:08:43.039 And I was so condemning. 00:08:43.039 --> 00:08:44.799 I wanted to condemn those men. 00:08:48.059 --> 00:08:50.579 But I realized that as I condemned them, 00:08:51.579 --> 00:08:54.759 I condemned myself. 00:08:57.799 --> 00:09:01.439 about sermons sometimes is 00:09:29.740 --> 00:09:31.259 God really uses them 00:09:31.259 --> 00:09:34.659 in the pastor's life to really hit us over the head 00:09:34.659 --> 00:09:36.079 and ask us hard questions. 00:09:36.579 --> 00:09:38.899 And so if today you feel like there's a finger pointing at you, 00:09:38.980 --> 00:09:40.360 realize that there's about a billion of them 00:09:40.360 --> 00:09:41.740 pointing back at me and at my heart. 00:09:44.100 --> 00:09:45.699 As I pray for us as a church, 00:09:45.819 --> 00:09:47.860 why are we here and what are we doing? 00:09:49.579 --> 00:09:51.219 The passage in Luke 10 00:09:51.219 --> 00:09:52.860 is a very interesting passage. 00:09:53.059 --> 00:09:54.019 It says in verse 1, 00:09:54.439 --> 00:09:56.339 now after this, what after this? 00:09:56.659 --> 00:09:59.039 You look back in verse chapter 9 00:09:59.039 --> 00:10:00.519 and you see that Jesus has done miracles. 00:10:01.740 --> 00:10:02.939 He's healed people. 00:10:02.940 --> 00:10:04.300 But at this point, 00:10:04.400 --> 00:10:06.540 he basically turns his face towards Jerusalem 00:10:06.540 --> 00:10:09.300 and he's going to go to the cross. 00:10:11.000 --> 00:10:12.440 And so whenever you see in the New Testament 00:10:12.440 --> 00:10:13.800 his faces towards Jerusalem, 00:10:14.060 --> 00:10:15.420 what you automatically understand 00:10:15.420 --> 00:10:17.680 is it means sacrifice and the cross and death 00:10:17.680 --> 00:10:22.400 and pain and separation for us. 00:10:23.920 --> 00:10:25.480 And it says that the Lord appointed, 00:10:25.640 --> 00:10:27.760 and basically he gives them a task in Greek, 00:10:28.340 --> 00:10:29.100 70 others. 00:10:29.260 --> 00:10:30.520 And this is a very interesting word. 00:10:30.519 --> 00:10:32.139 It's 70 is a very specific, 00:10:32.240 --> 00:10:33.399 some of you might say 72. 00:10:33.539 --> 00:10:34.939 We're not going to get in a discussion over that. 00:10:35.419 --> 00:10:36.559 But we'll talk about it later. 00:10:36.939 --> 00:10:38.840 But 70 was the number of nations 00:10:38.840 --> 00:10:40.579 that when you read Genesis 10 and 11, 00:10:40.899 --> 00:10:43.079 when they were building this big tower called Babel 00:10:43.079 --> 00:10:44.879 and God came down to confuse their language 00:10:44.879 --> 00:10:46.319 and they separated it, 00:10:46.579 --> 00:10:47.939 that the scripture says it's 70. 00:10:48.100 --> 00:10:49.699 70 nations went out from there. 00:10:50.079 --> 00:10:52.519 And so Christ appoints one evangelist 00:10:53.340 --> 00:10:54.500 or one lay person 00:10:54.500 --> 00:10:55.919 because these aren't professional people. 00:10:56.019 --> 00:10:56.860 They're just you and me. 00:10:56.860 --> 00:11:00.120 And he appoints one person per nation 00:11:00.120 --> 00:11:01.879 and it says he sends them out in pairs, 00:11:01.980 --> 00:11:02.940 which is also very important, 00:11:03.039 --> 00:11:03.899 I think for a couple reasons. 00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:07.460 One is that it's scary doing it by yourself. 00:11:09.519 --> 00:11:10.919 But two, the scripture says 00:11:10.919 --> 00:11:13.300 that wherever two testify to something, 00:11:13.899 --> 00:11:14.759 then it is true. 00:11:14.860 --> 00:11:15.700 And in a court of law, 00:11:15.840 --> 00:11:18.220 one person's testimony could not stand, 00:11:18.300 --> 00:11:20.100 but two had to be done. 00:11:21.279 --> 00:11:22.860 And so Jesus pairs up these people, 00:11:22.960 --> 00:11:24.879 these 70 you and me. 00:11:24.879 --> 00:11:27.500 And as he's about to send them out, 00:11:27.580 --> 00:11:28.939 he looks out over the fields 00:11:28.939 --> 00:11:30.000 and he says these words. 00:11:30.379 --> 00:11:30.639 He says, 00:11:30.759 --> 00:11:31.939 the harvest is plentiful, 00:11:32.399 --> 00:11:35.600 but the laborers are few. 00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:39.360 Now he's using farming language. 00:11:40.019 --> 00:11:41.080 And we've already established it. 00:11:41.100 --> 00:11:42.919 I think I'm one of the only farmers around here. 00:11:43.480 --> 00:11:46.480 But he's talking about this huge field of grain 00:11:46.480 --> 00:11:49.200 and the grain heads are so heavy 00:11:49.200 --> 00:11:50.580 that the grain is drooping. 00:11:51.580 --> 00:11:52.680 And he looks out there 00:11:52.680 --> 00:11:54.700 and he sees this amazing harvest. 00:11:54.860 --> 00:11:56.100 And what he's talking about is spiritually. 00:11:56.200 --> 00:11:57.259 He's talking about people's lives. 00:11:57.360 --> 00:12:00.120 He's talking about people who don't know Christ, 00:12:00.200 --> 00:12:01.139 but they need to know Christ. 00:12:01.200 --> 00:12:02.940 He's talking about people who don't know Christ, 00:12:03.020 --> 00:12:04.120 but they're asking questions. 00:12:04.440 --> 00:12:06.600 And he's looking out at all these places. 00:12:07.700 --> 00:12:09.080 And he's saying there's people everywhere. 00:12:10.860 --> 00:12:11.639 It's ripe. 00:12:11.639 --> 00:12:15.120 And I'm the Lord of the harvest. 00:12:16.759 --> 00:12:18.600 It's interesting when you look at harvest time 00:12:18.600 --> 00:12:21.419 in a farm that there's just, 00:12:21.559 --> 00:12:22.279 in harvest time, 00:12:22.419 --> 00:12:24.240 you only do one thing and you harvest. --> 00:13:11.939 He says it here in verse two 00:13:11.939 --> 00:13:12.620 and he's saying to them, 00:13:12.759 --> 00:13:13.500 the harvest is plentiful, 00:13:13.580 --> 00:13:14.299 but the laborers are few. 00:13:14.779 --> 00:13:16.799 Therefore, beseech the Lord of the harvest 00:13:16.799 --> 00:13:18.179 to send out laborers into his field. 00:13:18.439 --> 00:13:20.139 That word beseech is very specific. 00:13:20.559 --> 00:13:21.639 It means to pray. 00:13:21.779 --> 00:13:23.179 It means to beg. 00:13:24.980 --> 00:13:26.159 It means to ask. 00:13:27.679 --> 00:13:28.679 And when you read scripture, 00:13:28.759 --> 00:13:29.679 I don't think we get this right 00:13:29.679 --> 00:13:30.699 because I'm still on this journey too 00:13:30.699 --> 00:13:31.779 about prayer and talking 00:13:31.779 --> 00:13:32.399 and things like that. 00:13:32.639 --> 00:13:33.819 But when we read scripture, 00:13:34.159 --> 00:13:35.879 you never see a person praying 00:13:35.879 --> 00:13:36.840 and they're just like this. 00:13:37.139 --> 00:13:42.199 But in Hebrew and in the culture, 00:13:42.539 --> 00:13:43.779 prayer was always like this. 00:13:45.199 --> 00:13:47.240 And whenever you saw prayer in the Father, 00:13:47.600 --> 00:13:48.840 Abba was always connected 00:13:48.840 --> 00:13:50.460 and it was a sense that there was a child 00:13:50.460 --> 00:13:52.199 and a reaching up to his dad. 00:13:54.279 --> 00:13:56.039 And so when he's talking about prayer here, 00:13:56.220 --> 00:13:57.939 I think it's something different than we think 00:13:57.939 --> 00:14:00.259 because he's talking about beseeching, 00:14:00.399 --> 00:14:01.139 screaming, yelling, 00:14:01.139 --> 00:14:03.200 like a kid yells for his dad. 00:14:03.200 --> 00:14:07.240 I remember when we had this agreement. 00:14:07.540 --> 00:14:08.180 Okay, so guys, 00:14:08.240 --> 00:14:09.420 you have to have an disagreement with your wives. 00:14:10.060 -->
