00:00:39.119 You may be familiar with the name Ralph Ellison. 00:00:39.439 --> 00:00:45.620 He's the author who wrote the book The Invisible Man, a pretty well-known work of American literature. 00:00:46.299 --> 00:00:47.840 And Ralph Ellison says this. 00:00:47.899 --> 00:00:53.200 He says, the search for identity is not just one American theme. 00:00:53.519 --> 00:00:55.719 It is the American theme. 00:00:55.719 --> 00:01:00.159 The search for identity, he says, defines American culture. 00:01:00.839 --> 00:01:05.379 And if you just take a moment and you think about your favorite and most beloved movies, 00:01:05.900 --> 00:01:12.980 you're probably going to realize that those movies contain some kind of identity quest. 00:01:12.980 --> 00:01:18.980 You have a person who's either trying to find their true identity or they're trying to slough 00:01:18.980 --> 00:01:24.820 off a false identity that's been imposed on them, or they're going through a radical transformation not look like it has anything to do with identity. 00:02:09.400 --> 00:02:14.259 On the surface, Galatians, the ongoing debate that we've been tracing over the last few weeks, 00:02:14.840 --> 00:02:16.680 is a debate over table fellowship. 00:02:17.520 --> 00:02:20.020 If you have Jewish Christians and you have Gentile Christians, 00:02:20.020 --> 00:02:25.340 can they, should they, eat at the same table in their homes and at the Lord's table? 00:02:25.439 --> 00:02:27.719 Can they share that meal or not? 00:02:27.780 --> 00:02:29.379 That's the surface-level debate. 00:02:30.379 --> 00:02:31.820 But my contention is this, 00:02:32.400 --> 00:02:33.560 that underneath this, 00:02:34.520 --> 00:02:36.260 the book is all about identity. 00:02:37.080 --> 00:02:40.040 The central issue is a question of identity. 00:02:40.260 --> 00:02:42.600 Because when we talk about things like circumcision 00:02:42.600 --> 00:02:44.920 or keeping the ceremonial law, 00:02:45.240 --> 00:02:47.840 these are fundamental to Jewish identity. 00:02:47.840 --> 00:02:49.879 So that's what the book is really about. 00:02:50.379 --> 00:02:54.080 So we're going to ask two questions of this particular passage about identity. 00:02:54.259 --> 00:02:54.780 Number one, 00:02:56.000 --> 00:02:58.939 how does the gospel impact our identity? 00:02:59.060 --> 00:03:01.099 When you come to faith 00:03:47.120 Amen. 00:03:48.219 --> 00:03:50.840 So how does the gospel impact our identity? 00:03:50.979 --> 00:03:54.400 Let me just give you a little context of what's going on here in Galatians. 00:03:54.919 --> 00:03:58.520 At the heart of the Galatian debate is this question. 00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:00.159 As I said a moment ago, 00:04:00.460 --> 00:04:02.560 when someone becomes a Christian, 00:04:02.680 --> 00:04:04.379 when they believe and accept the gospel, 00:04:04.819 --> 00:04:07.840 what happens to that person's identity? 00:04:07.840 --> 00:04:11.520 There were false teachers who had come into Galatia 00:04:11.520 --> 00:04:14.360 who were contradicting Paul's teaching. 00:04:15.319 --> 00:04:17.680 And they taught that the gospel, 00:04:18.259 --> 00:04:21.939 that Jesus was something that you added on to your existing identity. 00:04:22.480 --> 00:04:24.980 So you're you and you believe Jesus 00:04:24.980 --> 00:04:27.959 and that becomes something that you add on. 00:04:28.840 --> 00:04:31.480 So they would say even if you believe in Jesus, 00:04:32.639 --> 00:04:33.980 Jews are still Jews. 00:04:34.560 --> 00:04:36.180 And Gentiles are still Gentiles. 00:04:36.180 --> 00:04:37.540 They've just added Jesus. 00:04:38.639 --> 00:04:40.980 But because you're still a Jew or still a Gentile, 00:04:41.100 --> 00:04:42.920 they would say even if you're a Christian, 00:04:43.400 --> 00:04:45.280 Jews and Gentiles should not intermingle. 00:04:45.379 --> 00:04:47.420 They should not eat or share food 00:04:47.420 --> 00:04:49.939 or even associate with one another very much 00:04:49.939 --> 00:04:52.040 because that would make the Jews unclean. 00:04:53.420 --> 00:04:58.240 Also, if the gospel is something that you simply add on to your identity, 00:04:58.319 --> 00:04:59.780 as these teachers taught, 00:04:59.779 --> 00:05:02.119 even if you believe in Jesus, 00:05:03.119 --> 00:05:06.919 the relationship that you have with God 00:05:06.919 --> 00:05:09.739 is still primarily based on your Jewishness, 00:05:10.179 --> 00:05:13.519 not your faith in Jesus Christ. 00:05:14.019 --> 00:05:15.579 If you believe in Jesus, that's great. 00:05:16.159 --> 00:05:18.459 But God accepts you because of your Jewishness. 00:05:19.019 --> 00:05:20.839 As a result, they taught that Gentiles, 00:05:20.959 --> 00:05:22.839 if they wanted to have the kind of insider, 00:05:23.239 --> 00:05:26.359 inner circle relationship with God that the Jews had, 00:05:26.360 --> 00:05:28.840 they also had to become Jewish. 00:05:29.000 --> 00:05:30.860 They had to take on the Jewish identity, 00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:33.460 get circumcised, keep the ceremonial law, 00:05:33.520 --> 00:05:34.400 all of those things. 00:05:34.660 --> 00:05:37.560 So this is what the false teachers were saying. 00:05:37.759 --> 00:05:40.639 But listen to what Paul says in response to this. 00:05:41.080 --> 00:05:41.740 Verse 15. 00:05:42.740 --> 00:05:45.040 We ourselves are Jews by birth 00:05:45.040 --> 00:05:46.720 and not Gentile sinners. 00:05:46.800 --> 00:05:49.199 So he's saying we also were born Jews. 00:05:49.900 --> 00:05:52.620 And yet we know that a person is not justified 00:05:52.620 --> 00:05:53.759 by works of the law, 00:05:53.899 --> 00:05:56.139 but through faith in Jesus Christ. 00:05:56.620 --> 00:05:59.160 So we also have believed in Christ Jesus 00:05:59.160 --> 00:06:02.459 in order to be justified by faith in Christ 00:06:02.459 --> 00:06:04.060 and not by works of the law. 00:06:04.220 --> 00:06:05.600 Because by works of the law, 00:06:05.840 --> 00:06:08.579 no one will be justified. 00:06:08.959 --> 00:06:10.000 You notice a certain word 00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:11.399 that shows up again and again and again 00:06:11.399 --> 00:06:13.180 in this little passage, 00:06:13.660 --> 00:06:15.100 the word justified. 00:06:15.819 --> 00:06:17.560 That's a very important word 00:06:17.560 --> 00:06:18.920 in the Christian faith. 00:06:19.199 --> 00:06:20.500 There's been an enormous amount of debate 00:06:20.500 --> 00:06:23.639 over the precise meaning of the word justification. 00:06:24.079 --> 00:06:26.519 It's very central to our understanding of the gospel. 00:06:27.779 --> 00:06:29.860 In part, to be justified 00:06:29.860 --> 00:06:33.540 means that if you're someone 00:06:33.540 --> 00:06:34.899 who is in a court of law 00:06:34.899 --> 00:06:35.959 and you've been accused, 00:06:36.680 --> 00:06:39.399 if the judge justifies you, 00:06:40.079 --> 00:06:42.399 then that means the judge is pronouncing you righteous. 00:06:43.079 --> 00:06:44.120 You are in the right. 00:06:44.319 --> 00:06:45.160 You're not guilty. 00:06:45.319 --> 00:06:47.240 You have been pronounced justified. 00:06:47.459 --> 00:06:48.519 That's justification. 00:06:48.879 --> 00:06:50.120 You're righteous, right? 00:06:50.500 --> 00:06:53.800 So it means in part for God to declare 00:06:53.800 --> 00:06:55.199 that the vertical relationship 00:06:55.199 --> 00:06:58.600 between us and God is okay. 00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:00.399 The barrier has been removed. 00:07:00.500 --> people. 00:07:14.199 --> 00:07:17.319 Because the broader context of this passage 00:07:17.319 --> 00:07:19.339 tells us that when Paul talks about 00:07:19.339 --> 00:07:20.239 being justified, 00:07:21.039 --> 00:07:23.500 he's saying that we are being declared 00:07:23.500 --> 00:07:25.560 as members of God's family. 00:07:26.859 --> 00:07:29.339 So not only are you justified before God, 00:07:29.439 --> 00:07:30.959 but you're justified in the sense 00:07:30.959 --> 00:07:31.979 that you are declared 00:07:31.979 --> 00:07:34.359 as being a member of God's family. 00:07:35.319 --> 00:07:36.739 So that is a statement 00:07:36.739 --> 00:07:39.719 that directly impacts our identity. 00:07:40.419 --> 00:07:41.599 You're in the family. 00:07:41.600 --> 00:07:44.340 God is your father. 00:07:44.900 --> 00:07:46.100 All of these other people 00:07:46.100 --> 00:07:47.460 are your brothers and sisters. 00:07:47.620 --> 00:07:48.840 It's a statement about identity. 00:07:49.900 --> 00:07:51.320 So in verses 15 and 16, 00:07:51.439 --> 00:07:52.980 just to sort of put it in our own words, 00:07:53.240 --> 00:07:54.400 here's what Paul is arguing. 00:07:55.020 --> 00:07:55.780 He says, you know, 00:07:56.020 --> 00:07:58.500 we used to think that God accepted us 00:07:58.500 --> 00:08:00.520 because of our Jewishness. 00:08:01.240 --> 00:08:02.760 Because we were born Jewish, 00:08:03.020 --> 00:08:04.260 because we were circumcised, 00:08:04.500 --> 00:08:06.300 because we kept the ceremonial law. 00:08:06.580 --> 00:08:07.700 But now, Paul says, 00:08:07.699 --> 00:08:09.500 we've realized that holding on 00:08:09.500 --> 00:08:11.519 to our Jewishness wasn't helping us. 00:08:11.699 --> 00:08:13.199 It was actually a roadblock. 00:08:14.719 --> 00:08:16.079 Holding on to our Jewishness 00:08:16.079 --> 00:08:18.079 was actually preventing us 00:08:18.079 --> 00:08:20.519 from entering into God's family. 00:08:20.899 --> 00:08:22.120 And Paul goes on to say, 00:08:22.339 --> 00:08:23.719 you know, we've realized this. 00:08:24.899 --> 00:08:26.539 We've realized that you can't be born 00:08:26.539 --> 00:08:27.579 into God's family. 00:08:28.659 --> 00:08:30.379 And you can't earn your way 00:08:30.379 --> 00:08:31.300 into God's family. 00:08:32.700 --> 00:08:34.159 And now that we've met 00:08:34.159 --> 00:08:35.679 and seen Jesus face to 00:08:44.559 who is worthy enough 00:08:44.559 --> 00:08:46.339 to be called a member 00:08:46.339 --> 00:08:47.599 of the family of God. 00:08:48.059 --> 00:08:49.599 And that's Jesus Christ. 00:08:50.500 --> 00:08:51.019 And so Paul says, 00:08:51.120 --> 00:08:52.039 we've realized that 00:08:52.039 --> 00:08:54.059 the only way to enter 00:08:54.059 --> 00:08:55.059 into God's family 00:08:55.059 --> 00:08:57.979 is through faith in Him, 00:08:58.079 --> 00:09:00.120 which means fully identifying 00:09:00.120 --> 00:09:02.179 yourself with Him, 00:09:02.319 --> 00:09:04.179 saying, I'm here because of Him, 00:09:04.179 --> 00:09:05.259 not because of me. 00:09:05.259 --> 00:09:06.700 I'm here on His merit, 00:09:06.980 --> 00:09:07.759 not my own. 00:09:08.639 --> 00:09:09.639 Paul says this has changed 00:09:09.639 --> 00:09:10.980 everything for us. 00:09:11.620 --> 00:09:12.500 So another way we might 00:09:12.500 --> 00:09:13.240 summarize this 00:09:13.240
