--> 00:03:14.740 Last week we saw from the first half of John chapter 2 the story of Jesus at the wedding feast. 00:03:14.840 --> 00:03:17.060 He was changing water into wine. 00:03:17.680 --> 00:03:23.080 And we saw that Jesus alone has this unique ability, this unique power to transform. 00:03:23.080 --> 00:03:27.900 He has the power to transform the ages from the old to the new. 00:03:28.080 --> 00:03:32.180 He has the power to transform material objects from water to wine. 00:03:32.280 --> 00:03:38.860 And we saw, of course, that Jesus has the unique power to transform us, you and me, 00:03:39.080 --> 00:03:42.080 to transform sorrow into joy. 00:03:42.200 --> 00:03:45.740 We got this image of a very joyful Jesus last week. 00:03:45.740 --> 00:03:55.560 But we shouldn't misunderstand this to mean that joy in and of itself is the most important thing to God. 00:03:56.180 --> 00:04:05.540 We shouldn't misunderstand this to mean that you and me in and of ourselves are our passage today, this morning, we get to see a very different side of Jesus. 00:04:20.639 --> 00:04:24.159 A very serious side of Jesus. 00:04:24.339 --> 00:04:30.120 And in our passage today, I believe it helps us to see that the most important thing, 00:04:31.019 --> 00:04:37.139 the number one main concern of Jesus' heart is not joy in and of itself. 00:04:37.339 --> 00:04:38.139 It's not It is that God is worshipped as He deserves. 00:04:51.540 --> 00:04:53.980 This, of course, is why we were created. 00:04:54.740 --> 00:04:56.980 This is the purpose of our lives. 00:04:57.060 --> 00:05:05.519 --> 00:05:13.539 The greatest priority of Jesus' heart is that God be glorified and worshipped. 00:05:13.699 --> 00:05:19.139 Jesus is zealous for the right worship of God. 00:05:19.740 --> 00:05:24.019 As we read this account here this morning of what happened in Jerusalem, 00:05:24.019 --> 00:05:29.279 I want us to consider as we see what happens here at the Passover feast, 00:05:29.279 --> 00:05:35.639 do we share the same zeal as Jesus does for the glory of God? 00:05:36.559 --> 00:05:39.000 Do we share this same zeal? 00:05:39.079 --> 00:05:42.319 Is this the highest priority of our heart? 00:05:43.239 --> 00:05:48.059 This morning, we're going to see this zeal of Jesus Christ in two parts. 00:05:48.199 --> 00:05:49.579 This is going to be our outline this Jesus went down about 16 miles from Cana to Capernaum for a few days 00:06:36.939 --> 00:06:43.199 and then made the journey up, literally up, up the mountain to the capital city of Jerusalem 00:06:43.199 --> 00:06:48.899 to join the Jews from all over for the Passover celebration. 00:06:49.279 --> 00:06:53.920 The Passover, of course, as you know, was a major celebration for the Jewish people. 00:06:54.420 --> 00:06:56.199 At the Passover, it looked backwards. 00:06:56.500 --> 00:07:02.939 It was reflecting, celebrating the great act of deliverance and redemption of the Jews from Egypt 00:07:02.939 --> 00:07:07.100 in the Exodus, this great act of redemption in the Old Testament. 00:07:07.339 --> 00:07:15.579 But also, we know, it looked ahead and was foreshadowing the great act of redemption in the New Testament, 00:07:16.259 --> 00:07:19.079 in the cross, the resurrection of Jesus. 00:07:19.240 --> 00:07:26.259 God rescuing his people from slavery to sin through the death and resurrection of Christ. 00:07:26.379 --> 00:07:32.300 And you might imagine that just as his coming death and resurrection weighed heavily on Christ 00:07:32.300 --> 00:07:40.400 at the wedding feast, especially now, it must have been weighing heavily on him here at the Passover. 00:07:40.620 --> 00:07:47.460 Jesus knew that in short time he would again return to Jerusalem to die. 00:07:48.780 --> 00:07:51.680 This was a major event on the Jewish calendar. 00:07:51.840 --> 00:07:56.160 In fact, a whole month was set aside for preparation for this event. 00:07:56.160 --> 00:08:03.340 And that makes sense because history shows that Jerusalem at this time typically had about 30,000 citizens. 00:08:04.120 --> 00:08:10.320 But during the week of Passover, over 2 million Jews and Gentiles from all over 00:08:10.320 --> 00:08:14.860 would gather in this little town of Jerusalem for worship. 00:08:15.060 --> 00:08:22.040 You can imagine just the sense of excitement and bubbling energy as this city was bursting with life 00:08:22.040 --> 00:08:24.840 and energy for seven days. 00:08:24.839 --> 00:08:31.219 Well, for some, this was also good opportunity for business. 00:08:32.379 --> 00:08:35.500 They heard 2 million people. 00:08:35.699 --> 00:08:38.459 They heard Passover and they saw business. 00:08:38.639 --> 00:08:40.100 They saw dollar signs. 00:08:40.220 --> 00:08:41.759 2 million people is a lot of business. 00:08:41.980 --> 00:08:46.179 And so they had two different operations running side by side. 00:08:46.299 --> 00:08:48.279 We see for one, verse 14, look there. 00:08:48.279 --> 00:08:55.000 For one, it says that they sold animals, oxen and sheep and pigeons. 00:08:55.620 --> 00:09:01.319 So rather than going through the trouble of bringing their own animals with them to Jerusalem, 00:09:02.199 --> 00:09:04.559 worshipers could simply buy them there on site. 00:09:04.659 --> 00:09:05.740 It was a matter of convenience. 00:09:05.919 --> 00:09:09.079 They offered animals for sacrifice there on site. 00:09:09.080 --> 00:09:16.060 But also on top of this, they knew that foreign currency would not be accepted in the temple. 00:09:16.060 --> 00:09:19.520 And so they offered a money exchange service. 00:09:19.520 --> 00:09:22.820 Of course, with a little bump for the profit. 00:09:23.200 --> 00:09:29.139 They exchanged foreign coin for Jewish currency that would be accepted there in the temple. 00:09:29.139 --> 00:09:33.740 Now, this was normal business and it was a good service. 00:09:33.960 --> 00:09:36.840 This was not Jesus' issue at all. 00:09:38.639 --> 00:09:43.860 The issue here was not primarily what they were doing. 00:09:44.460 --> 00:09:47.519 It was where they were doing it. 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:49.399 Look there again to verse 14. 00:09:49.500 --> 00:09:50.059 What does it say? 00:09:50.059 --> 00:09:56.339 He says that these things took place in the temple. 00:09:57.379 --> 00:10:02.739 Meaning not the temple building itself, but within the courts of the temple. 00:10:02.879 --> 00:10:09.379 There's a structure, the temple building, but outside were various courts meant for the gathering of worshipers. 00:10:09.500 --> 00:10:15.159 And this occurrence was happening specifically on the outer court where Gentiles, 00:10:15.759 --> 00:10:19.939 God-fearing Gentiles, would gather and worship the Lord. 00:10:19.940 --> 00:10:26.960 What's happening here is these Jewish businessmen are preventing and distracting from Gentile worship. 00:10:28.500 --> 00:10:30.940 I've been to several Christian conferences. 00:10:31.680 --> 00:10:33.140 Maybe you've been to some as well. 00:10:33.320 --> 00:10:37.960 And most of them, it is busy and it is loud. 00:10:38.840 --> 00:10:41.880 Thousands of people will come and gather at these events. 00:10:41.980 --> 00:10:48.980 And as you approach the event, you hear the noises of laughter and reunions as friends gather and see each other. 00:10:48.980 --> 00:10:49.940 They're reunited. 00:10:50.100 --> 00:10:50.639 They reconnect. 00:10:51.300 --> 00:10:53.080 There's usually places for vendors. 00:10:53.379 --> 00:10:54.500 There's different sponsors. 00:10:54.700 --> 00:10:59.340 Oftentimes people are selling merchandise, ball caps and t-shirts and hoodies. 00:10:59.480 --> 00:11:02.100 There's always a place to grab a good cup of coffee. 00:11:02.740 --> 00:11:07.180 But all of that is outside of the worship center. 00:11:07.179 --> 00:11:27.739 Could you imagine if you came, how distracting it would be if this type of loud business and conversation and exchange and the grinding of coffee and the dropping of money and the selling of merchandise was happening inside the worship center? 00:11:27.740 --> 00:11:30.200 While you were trying to worship. 00:11:30.200 --> 00:11:47.519 Could you imagine if you traveled for miles and miles and miles and miles, spent time and money and resources and energy to come and to worship only to be distracted by those who would use this time as an opportunity for personal gain? 00:11:47.519 --> 00:12:06.419 See, the issue that has Jesus so upset here in Jerusalem, it's not primarily that they're ripping people off, but that they are robbing the Gentiles of an opportunity to worship the Lord and thereby are robbing God of the glory. 00:12:06.419 --> 00:12:08.039 He's due. 00:12:09.479 --> 00:12:10.620 So Jesus. 00:12:11.899 --> 00:12:16.339 Gentle, quiet, lowly, meek. 00:12:16.620 --> 00:12:27.259 Jesus comes politely asks them if it's not too much trouble, if they wouldn't mind picking up their stuff and going along if they don't have any issue with that. 00:12:27.379 --> 00:12:27.639 No. 00:12:29.219 --> 00:12:30.879 In holy anger. 00:12:30.879 --> 00:12:44.480 He picks up some cords, binds them together and begins to chase these distractions out of the place of worship. 00:12:45.299 --> 00:12:47.919 Can you imagine the chaos here of this scene? running. 00:12:57.899 --> 00:13:00.019 Cattle are mooing, running away. 00:13:00.019 --> 00:13:04.199 Verse 15 says he pours out all the coins all over the tables. 00:13:04.299 --> 00:13:07.039 He turns the tables up on their side. 00:13:07.439 --> 00:13:10.000 And he says in verse 16, take these things away. 00:13:11.579 --> 00:13:15.360 Do not make my father's house a house of trade. worship is not just part of Jesus' mission. 00:13:50.440 --> 00:13:52.900 This was his mission. 00:13:54.160 --> 00:14:01.460 The curse of sin that rules in our hearts, that reigns in the world, that draws us away from honoring the Lord, 00:14:01.560 --> 00:14:05.220 from loving the Lord, from worshiping the Lord as we were made to do. 00:14:05.220 --> 00:14:15.580 Jesus has come to remove that curse, to destroy the effects of sin, to restore proper worship to God the Father, 00:14:15.660 --> 00:14:18.940 even at the price of his own blood. 00:14:19.399 --> 00:14:23.060 Anything that stands in the way has to be dealt with. 00:14:23.980 --> 00:14:32.800 You see, for Jesus, anything that would distract us from God-exalting worship must be driven away with zeal. 00:14:32.799 --> type of God-fixated zeal for the glory of God in worship? 00:14:56.259 --> 00:15:11.879 We live in a culture where the focus of Christian worship here has shifted. 00:15:12.860 --> 00:15:13.799 You may be aware. 00:15:13.799 --> 00:15:26.519 Instead of focusing on the glory of God, the focus has shifted and become about us. 00:15:27.799 --> 00:15:36.099 And when that happens, the distractions begin to gather and gather and gather. 00:15:36.479 --> 00:15:37.259 They multiply. 00:15:37.259 --> 00:15:45.179 Our assessment of a good worship service becomes whether we have had our needs met, 00:15:46.220 --> 00:15:50.819 whether we have had our preferences catered to, 00:15:51.000 --> 00:15:54.519 whether we have been entertained by what we like, 00:15:54.659 --> 00:15:59.500 whether what makes us feel good has happened when we come and when we go. 00:15:59.659 --> 00:16:02.460 We focus instead on what we can gain. 00:16:02.460 --> 00:16:04.420 The songs become about us. 00:16:04.519 --> 00:16:06.639 The sermons become about us. 00:16:07.360 --> 00:16:09.879 Worship is not about us. 00:16:12.300 --> 00:16:13.720 And to make it worse, 00:16:14.940 --> 00:16:22.259 we often make more of an effort to think and to talk and to complain about what we want, 00:16:22.320 --> 00:16:23.639 whether our needs are being met, 00:16:23.700 --> 00:16:27.940 than we ever do to go and to share the gospel with others 00:16:27.940 --> 00:16:35.600 that the nations might join in bringing honor and glory to the Lord alongside us. 00:16:35.820 --> 00:16:37.700 Church, may this never be. 00:16:40.200 --> 00:16:46.340 I pray God would clear this out of my heart and out of his church. 00:16:46.480 --> 00:16:47.940 Now, some of you may hear this and say, 00:16:48.020 --> 00:16:50.300 oof, that stings. 00:16:50.299 --> 00:16:56.799 One of my challenges in preaching the word of God is not just to preach the text, 00:16:56.939 --> 00:16:59.620 it's to preach the tone of the text. deeply Jesus feels about the worship of God. 00:17:15.319 --> 00:17:20.579 that he be glorified and all distractions be removed. 00:17:20.839 --> 00:17:25.619 Do not rob God of his glory in worship. 00:17:26.919 --> 00:17:32.460 So, let me tell you a few ways that we can help fight against this here. 00:17:32.559 --> 00:17:36.579 Just very practically, four applications, quick applications for us. 00:17:36.679 --> 00:17:41.579 Number one, place the word of God above preference and tradition. 00:17:41.579 --> 00:17:47.579 Place the word of God above preference and tradition. 00:17:47.740 --> 00:18:04.859 and what we insist must be done and must be a part of worship, 00:18:05.000 --> 00:18:06.759 must be a part of church life, 00:18:06.759 --> 00:18:11.439 then they become distractions rather than aids for worship. 00:18:11.579 --> 00:18:18.639 Number two, kill any ambition for personal gain when you gather here for worship. 00:18:19.980 --> 00:18:26.879 Kill any ambition for the church 00:18:34.319 --> 00:18:41.359 because he had, over time, taken advantage of several of the older members of the church, 00:18:41.500 --> 00:18:45.599 several of the older ladies who had generously, out of the kindness of their hearts, 00:18:45.720 --> 00:18:49.399 loaned him money, and he never paid back a dime. 00:18:50.539 --> 00:18:51.519 Never intended to. 00:18:52.519 --> 00:18:57.059 He gathered week in, week out, came week in, week out, 00:18:57.059 --> 00:19:02.619 for manipulation and for personal gain under the guise of worship. 00:19:03.940 --> 00:19:07.500 There's another man who showed a lot of interest in the church, 00:19:07.579 --> 00:19:10.259 wanted to ask me some questions, so he took me out for coffee 00:19:10.259 --> 00:19:12.259 to talk about the church. 00:19:12.339 --> 00:19:15.359 When we got there, all he wanted to talk about was money. 00:19:15.359 --> 00:19:21.619 He said he just so happened to teach a class at churches 00:19:21.619 --> 00:19:25.419 to come and to get others to invest with him, 00:19:25.519 --> 00:19:30.779 and so he liked to go to churches and recruit others to invest their money with him, 00:19:30.839 --> 00:19:33.139 and so I told him he's welcome to come for worship. 00:19:33.259 --> 00:19:35.439 Glad to have him, but to be clear, 00:19:35.519 --> 00:19:38.439 have no expectation of teaching anytime
