00:01:56.219 When we see things happening in the church, such as moral failings by prominent leaders 00:01:56.219 --> 00:02:03.879 or abuse and scandals that are then covered up or any of the other things that we could 00:02:03.879 --> 00:02:09.459 name that are very real wrongs that happen in the church, there can be a temptation for 00:02:09.460 --> 00:02:14.860 some people to say, well, see, that's the problem with the church or that's why I don't believe 00:02:14.860 --> 00:02:15.320 in God. 00:02:16.420 --> 00:02:21.120 But in the same way that I would say we shouldn't blame Picasso or the painting for what happened 00:02:21.120 --> 00:02:26.860 to it, I would humbly suggest that it doesn't make sense to blame God or to blame the church 00:02:26.860 --> 00:02:32.040 for the fact that there are times when the church is used and abused and mistreated and 00:02:32.039 --> 00:02:35.919 damaged for all kinds of reasons, right? 00:02:35.979 --> 00:02:38.259 Some unintentional, many intentional. 00:02:39.500 --> 00:02:43.539 Because as we look at Scripture, the church is, in fact, God's masterpiece. 00:02:45.039 --> 00:02:49.680 Everything that Jesus did, everything that He accomplished in His life and His death and 00:02:49.680 --> 00:02:53.319 His resurrection was not just to accomplish individual salvation. 00:02:53.319 --> 00:03:00.280 It was to establish a community, which is the church, which is God's plan A for the world. 00:03:00.340 --> 00:03:02.400 And there is no plan B for the world. 00:03:03.359 --> 00:03:08.419 And so I think the question that we should ask is the same question that a person looking 00:03:08.419 --> 00:03:09.620 at that painting should ask. 00:03:09.840 --> 00:03:13.060 What was the original artistic vision for this masterpiece? 00:03:13.299 --> 00:03:14.979 What should this look like? 00:03:16.259 --> 00:03:19.560 And we're going to ask that about the church this morning, and I think there's no better place 00:03:19.560 --> 00:03:26.240 to look than Acts chapter 11, this is where we see for the first time the gospel come to a major 00:03:26.240 --> 00:03:33.979 city center and a church is established in the heart of the city, perhaps the world's first urban church. 00:03:34.860 --> 00:03:36.219 Antioch is no small city. 00:03:36.319 --> 00:03:39.580 It was the capital of Syria, the third largest city in the world at this time. 00:03:40.439 --> 00:03:46.460 And the reason that this church is so successful and becomes a launch pad for mission all around 00:03:46.460 --> 00:03:52.740 the world is because it had within it certain characteristics that you don't often see together 00:03:52.740 --> 00:03:53.879 in the same church. 00:03:54.379 --> 00:03:59.300 And so this is not an exhaustive list that we're going to look at, but there are certain characteristics 00:03:59.300 --> 00:04:06.420 that are held together in tension in this church that I think were the key to its effectiveness. 00:04:07.900 --> 00:04:10.219 So let's pray, and then we're going to look at three of them. 00:04:10.219 --> 00:04:17.560 Lord, we thank you for your word, and we thank you that you are always present, that you are 00:04:17.560 --> 00:04:23.500 always at work in our lives, that your word is living, that it is active, that it never goes out 00:04:23.500 --> 00:04:24.800 and returns to you void. 00:04:24.899 --> 00:04:27.240 It accomplishes everything that you set out for it to accomplish. 00:04:27.379 --> 00:04:32.920 And we pray now that we might sit under your word, that you might this church in Antioch that is so wonderful is 00:04:51.920 --> 00:04:57.660 that it is what we would consider to be lay-driven, leader-supported. 00:04:58.280 --> 00:04:59.480 Now, what do I mean by that? 00:04:59.480 --> 00:05:05.620 Well, the word lay is simply an old word that means anyone who's not ordained. 00:05:06.259 --> 00:05:13.120 So a lay person or the laity, that refers to people who are not ordained, ordinary Christians. 00:05:13.560 --> 00:05:18.259 And one of the first things that we learn about the church in Antioch is that it was started 00:05:18.259 --> 00:05:24.140 by lay people, ordinary Christians who are simply trying to follow Jesus faithfully in 00:05:24.140 --> 00:05:25.000 their daily lives. 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:31.240 And these are not people who had a master plan to go plant a church in a major urban center. 00:05:31.899 --> 00:05:38.600 These are ordinary Christians who are fleeing persecution, and they just happen to wind up 00:05:38.600 --> 00:05:43.579 in Antioch looking for a safe place to root down, right? 00:05:43.600 --> 00:05:45.600 I don't know what brought you to D.C. 00:05:46.120 --> 00:05:49.540 Could be a job, internship, school, marriage, whatever. 00:05:50.920 --> 00:05:54.740 Multiple, all of the things on that list brought me to D.C., right? 00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:55.660 Years ago. 00:05:56.079 --> 00:06:00.120 But what this shows us is that we can have our reasons for coming to a place like D.C. 00:06:00.120 --> 00:06:05.759 or Antioch, and then God can have His reasons for bringing us where He brings us. 00:06:06.319 --> 00:06:08.519 So they didn't come here planning to plant a church. 00:06:08.639 --> 00:06:11.060 What happens is that they end up in Antioch. 00:06:11.120 --> 00:06:12.199 They're fleeing persecution. 00:06:12.800 --> 00:06:14.279 We don't even know their names. 00:06:15.379 --> 00:06:18.139 All we know is that they started telling people about Jesus. 00:06:19.139 --> 00:06:21.000 And the Holy Spirit began to work. 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:24.160 And a lot of people started coming to faith. 00:06:24.480 --> 00:06:28.959 And before long, you have this young, thriving church in the heart of the city. 00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:35.660 And yet, this grassroots, Spirit-filled movement was not totally leaderless. 00:06:36.939 --> 00:06:38.959 Barnabas comes down from Jerusalem. 00:06:39.199 --> 00:06:39.920 Very important. 00:06:39.920 --> 00:06:46.900 In order for this church to survive, it has to be connected to the larger church. 00:06:47.020 --> 00:06:52.879 It has to be connected to a larger body where there can be support and accountability. 00:06:53.460 --> 00:06:58.840 So often these days, we see what goes wrong when churches have no source of accountability 00:06:58.840 --> 00:07:00.259 outside themselves. 00:07:01.200 --> 00:07:04.020 But notice that Barnabas doesn't just arrive and say, 00:07:04.019 --> 00:07:06.439 Well, you know, good job, normal people. 00:07:06.599 --> 00:07:08.159 Step aside the professionals here. 00:07:09.139 --> 00:07:10.379 That's not his approach. 00:07:10.919 --> 00:07:17.279 Barnabas' entire ministry is to encourage the ministry that is already happening, 00:07:17.799 --> 00:07:21.740 is to encourage what the people there are already doing. 00:07:21.979 --> 00:07:25.979 And then he raises up other leaders who do the exact same thing. 00:07:26.139 --> 00:07:28.060 And you have to admire Barnabas here. 00:07:28.060 --> 00:07:33.860 Because there can be a temptation, especially in a situation like this. 00:07:34.759 --> 00:07:38.980 If you're a leader like Barnabas, there can be a temptation to want to be the star of the show. 00:07:40.139 --> 00:07:46.560 And certainly there are many churches that get built up entirely around one personality. 00:07:46.759 --> 00:07:49.319 They become a kind of cult of personality. 00:07:50.439 --> 00:07:54.660 But we know enough about Barnabas to know he is humble enough to realize, 00:07:55.600 --> 00:07:56.699 It is not about me. 00:07:56.699 --> 00:07:59.120 It is not about Barnabas. 00:07:59.819 --> 00:08:01.399 It's about what God is doing. 00:08:02.259 --> 00:08:05.860 And in any church, in any organization, but especially the church, 00:08:06.579 --> 00:08:12.439 a good leader's job is to make themselves less necessary, not more necessary. 00:08:12.680 --> 00:08:13.480 So what does he do? 00:08:13.719 --> 00:08:15.219 He raises up other leaders. 00:08:15.680 --> 00:08:17.740 He has a good friend, Paul. 00:08:18.180 --> 00:08:23.319 Paul is much more highly educated than Barnabas, perhaps much more gifted than Barnabas, 00:08:23.319 --> 00:08:26.519 the kind of leader that might make most leaders feel threatened. 00:08:26.699 --> 00:08:31.620 And yet Barnabas is not threatened by gifting and talent. 00:08:31.719 --> 00:08:37.799 And he travels a hundred miles to Tarsus to recruit his friend Paul to bring him back to help encourage 00:08:37.799 --> 00:08:41.759 and support and strengthen the ministry there in Antioch. 00:08:41.799 --> 00:08:43.840 And that's exactly what he does. 00:08:43.840 --> 00:08:47.860 So we have this wonderful balance here in Antioch. 00:08:48.540 --> 00:08:52.360 We have leaders who provide oversight and direction. 00:08:52.360 --> 00:08:59.280 But when it comes to the ministries of the church, such as evangelism or caring for those in need, 00:08:59.399 --> 00:09:01.360 the whole community takes part. 00:09:01.360 --> 00:09:05.600 And when you see that, you say, that is a healthy church. 00:09:06.039 --> 00:09:09.620 It's what we might call an every-member ministry culture. 00:09:10.580 --> 00:09:11.940 Everyone is involved. 00:09:12.259 --> 00:09:13.580 Everyone is necessary. 00:09:15.120 --> 00:09:18.340 When someone doesn't show up, there are things that don't get done, 00:09:18.440 --> 00:09:22.060 because every single person has a vital part to play. 00:09:22.059 --> 00:09:28.859 And this is such a powerful corrective for us today as we look at the church in our time and place. 00:09:29.439 --> 00:09:34.179 As we said, so many churches are built around a charismatic leader. 00:09:34.379 --> 00:09:37.679 They are leader-driven, not lay-driven. 00:09:38.479 --> 00:09:43.799 Congregants are basically audience members who come to watch a performance, 00:09:44.559 --> 00:09:47.599 to support the leader and buy their books. 00:09:47.600 --> 00:09:51.899 And this is the opposite of how the Apostle Paul thinks about the church. 00:09:51.899 --> 00:09:56.879 His favorite metaphor in the Bible for the church is the human body, 00:09:57.879 --> 00:10:02.300 where he says no part is superior to any other part. 00:10:02.879 --> 00:10:07.139 What matters is that every single part is serving its purpose. 00:10:08.100 --> 00:10:12.420 And the way a body works is that every part, right, every cell, every organ, 00:10:12.940 --> 00:10:16.759 has to do its part to serve the whole. 00:10:16.759 --> 00:10:22.779 And this is extremely important as we think about what it means to be a part of a church body. 00:10:23.179 --> 00:10:27.360 Because if we are all like parts of a human body, that means, among other things, 00:10:27.860 --> 00:10:31.120 that the best way for me to get my needs met 00:10:31.120 --> 00:10:35.840 is to focus on meeting the needs around me. 00:10:35.860 --> 00:10:36.899 It's very counterintuitive. 00:10:38.179 --> 00:10:40.960 But if we are, in fact, like a human body, 00:10:40.960 --> 00:10:44.400 then the more I seek the well-being of the body, 00:10:44.500 --> 00:10:46.780 and the healthier the body is as a result, 00:10:46.960 --> 00:10:50.560 the more then I will get my needs met in return. 00:10:51.100 --> 00:10:53.480 The more I give myself away, 00:10:53.680 --> 00:10:56.360 the more I will gain myself. 00:10:58.740 --> 00:11:00.360 We are like a human body. 00:11:01.480 --> 00:11:05.620 And there's a tremendous blessing that comes with serving in a local church. 00:11:05.620 --> 00:11:06.840 If you want to grow in your faith, 00:11:07.480 --> 00:11:10.379 if you want to develop deeper friendships and community, 00:11:10.600 --> 00:11:11.720 this is how it happens. 00:11:12.500 --> 00:11:15.679 There's no secret way for that to happen. 00:11:26.679 The more you are involved and serving and giving yourself to the broader community, 00:11:26.679 --> 00:11:29.419 the more you are going to grow in your faith. 00:11:29.419 --> 00:11:33.860 If you're here primarily to take, 00:11:34.459 --> 00:11:38.459 if you are in a place where you just want the church to meet your needs, 00:11:38.779 --> 00:11:41.740 there really is not a category for that in Scripture. 00:11:43.419 --> 00:11:46.319 That's really not what it means to be part of a church community. 00:11:47.219 --> 00:11:50.059 And this is an important thing for us all to be reminded of, 00:11:50.479 --> 00:11:51.899 because I know for some of us, 00:11:51.959 --> 00:11:54.539 this might be the first church you've ever really been a part of. 00:11:55.039 --> 00:11:56.459 And there's not a lot out there, 00:11:56.519 --> 00:11:58.099 other than places like this in Scripture, 00:11:58.100 --> 00:12:00.879 that tell us what that should actually look like. 00:12:01.960 --> 00:12:03.840 And so it's important to understand 00:12:03.840 --> 00:12:07.340 what we mean by being involved in a local church. 00:12:07.420 --> 00:12:08.720 So we say, well, what does this look like? 00:12:08.800 --> 00:12:11.139 Well, it means on a basic level 00:12:11.139 --> 00:12:14.200 that every single person who calls Advent their home 00:12:14.200 --> 00:12:18.639 00:13:50.100 We give ourselves to the body. 00:13:50.879 --> 00:13:52.960 The same could be said for the welcome team, 00:13:53.080 --> 00:13:55.000 the production team, our prayer ministries, effective 00:14:06.000 --> 00:14:07.840 is that it is lay-driven, 00:14:08.480 --> 00:14:11.379 but it has support from godly leaders. 00:14:12.279 --> 00:14:13.639 It's not a cult of personality. 00:14:13.759 --> 00:14:14.600 It's not leader-driven. 00:14:14.600 --> 00:14:17.879 Every single person is actively involved 00:14:17.879 --> 00:14:21.779 in serving and ministering in the church 00:14:29.139 is that this church is both outward-facing 00:14:29.139 --> 00:14:32.019 and it's also Christ-centered. 00:14:33.180 --> 00:14:35.340 It's outward-facing and Christ-centered. 00:14:35.759 --> 00:14:38.040 Because of its proximity not only to Jerusalem 00:14:38.040 --> 00:14:40.899 but also to Asia and to Africa, 00:14:40.899 --> 00:14:43.679 Antioch was an incredibly diverse, 00:14:43.919 --> 00:14:45.740 pluralistic, multicultural city. 00:14:47.639 --> 00:14:51.399 It really was unprecedented at this time. 00:14:53.299 --> 00:14:56.600 And the city had at least 18 ethnic quarters 00:14:56.600 --> 00:14:59.959 representing different ethnic groups 00:14:59.959 --> 00:15:01.959 that were called Antioch home. 00:15:02.899 --> 00:15:04.879 And they had actually built walls. 00:15:05.039 --> 00:15:07.159 This city was built around 300 B.C. 00:15:07.159 --> 00:15:08.799 And they had actually built walls 00:15:08.799 --> 00:15:11.240 to keep these ethnic quarters 00:15:11.240 --> 00:15:12.240 separate from one another 00:15:12.240 --> 00:15:13.500 because of all the infighting 00:15:13.500 --> 00:15:15.799 between the various groups. 00:15:16.439 --> 00:15:17.439 So to keep the peace, 00:15:17.500 --> 00:15:18.339 they just kept them separate. 00:15:19.699 --> 00:15:21.740 And so some of the Jewish Christians 00:15:21.740 --> 00:15:22.819 fleeing persecution 00:15:22.819 --> 00:15:24.079 when they ended up in Antioch, 00:15:24.120 --> 00:15:25.559 it says that they only wanted 00:15:25.559 --> 00:15:27.000 to interact with other Jews. 00:15:27.679 --> 00:15:28.939 And you know, that makes sense. 00:15:29.000 --> 00:15:30.600 I think especially in times of crisis, 00:15:31.139 --> 00:15:33.539 we can tend to want to seek out 00:15:33.539 --> 00:15:34.539 what is most comfortable 00:15:34.539 --> 00:15:35.459 and most familiar. 00:15:35.819 --> 00:15:38.000 And so that makes sense 00:15:38.000 --> 00:15:39.639 if we understand human nature. 00:15:40.459 --> 00:15:42.019 But what's really amazing 00:15:42.019 --> 00:15:42.860 about this account 00:15:42.860 --> 00:15:44.279 is that there are also Christians 00:15:44.279 --> 00:15:45.779 who are facing the same crisis 00:15:45.779 --> 00:15:47.779 and yet somehow they stay, 00:15:47.919 --> 00:15:49.120 they remain outward facing. 00:15:50.219 --> 00:15:52.000 They never lose sight 00:15:52.000 --> 00:15:54.120 of the mission given to them by Jesus 00:15:54.120 --> 00:15:56.019 to bring the gospel to the nations. 00:15:56.939 --> 00:15:58.939 So they're willing to share the gospel 00:15:58.939 --> 00:16:00.519 with just about anybody 00:16:00.519 --> 00:16:01.719 who's willing to listen. 00:16:01.720 --> 00:16:04.860 And because these Christians 00:16:04.860 --> 00:16:06.440 were outward facing, 00:16:06.700 --> 00:16:08.879 they begin developing relationships 00:16:08.879 --> 00:16:10.779 and sharing the gospel 00:16:10.779 --> 00:16:14.680 across ethnic and cultural lines. 00:16:15.139 --> 00:16:16.960 And the gospel begins 00:16:16.960 --> 00:16:18.399 to transform the city 00:16:18.399 --> 00:16:21.180 because as people come to faith in Christ, 00:16:22.000 --> 00:16:25.399 in all of these various ethnic quarters, 00:16:25.779 --> 00:16:27.360 people are coming to faith 00:16:27.360 --> 00:16:28.259 and word is
