throwback this morning. 00:03:38.080 --> 00:03:41.719 So you'll remember in the first eight chapters of the Gospel of Mark, 00:03:41.800 --> 00:03:44.259 I kept asking you over and over these two 00:04:44.040 --> 00:04:47.340 and challenge for the hard-hearted, that Jesus is the king. 00:04:47.420 --> 00:04:49.740 He's not just an advisor or a comforter, 00:04:49.740 --> 00:04:54.340 but he's 00:05:39.559 --> 00:05:43.719 Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet. 00:05:44.500 --> 00:05:46.719 David himself calls him Lord. 00:05:47.439 --> 00:05:49.979 So how is he his son? 00:05:50.619 --> 00:05:54.039 And the great throng heard him gladly. 00:05:54.759 --> 00:05:58.639 I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word. 00:05:59.519 --> week, 00:06:50.680 --> 00:06:54.100 we had that question about a woman who had seven husbands 00:06:54.100 --> 00:06:56.180 and what that had to do with the resurrection. 00:06:56.319 --> 00:06:59.480 And we talked about the reality of there being no marriage in heaven. 00:07:00.079 --> 00:07:00.899 And then last week, 00:07:00.939 --> 00:07:03.480 we had the third and final question pointed to Jesus, 00:07:03.599 --> 00:07:04.420 where he was asked, 00:07:04.579 --> 00:07:05.899 what is the greatest commandment? 00:07:06.379 --> 00:07:07.099 And Jesus says, 00:07:07.219 --> 00:07:07.399 actually, 00:07:07.480 --> 00:07:08.139 there's not just one, 00:07:08.240 --> 00:07:08.600 there's two. 00:07:08.759 --> 00:07:10.600 Love the Lord your God with your whole self 00:07:10.600 --> 00:07:12.899 and to love your neighbor as yourself. 00:07:13.779 --> 00:07:14.879 Now in this section, 00:07:15.339 --> 00:07:20.079 Jesus decides it is time to stop the stump the chump series. 00:07:20.500 --> 00:07:20.779 In fact, 00:07:20.819 --> 00:07:22.519 we saw in verse 34 last week, 00:07:22.600 --> 00:07:24.779 no one wanted to ask him questions anymore 00:07:24.779 --> 00:07:27.179 because it wasn't fun anymore. 00:07:28.039 --> 00:07:31.399 And Jesus decides it's time for him to ask a question. 00:07:31.539 --> 00:07:34.559 It's his turn to turn the tables. 00:07:35.539 --> 00:07:37.939 And so that's what we come up against here in verse 35. 00:07:38.099 --> 00:07:40.599 Jesus poses this very strange question. 00:07:40.719 --> 00:07:41.479 And to understand it, 00:07:41.519 --> 00:07:43.019 I want you to think about it this way. 00:07:43.019 --> 00:07:45.959 Imagine I came to you and I said, 00:07:46.579 --> 00:07:48.879 I am two things at the same time. 00:07:49.699 --> 00:07:51.560 I am my dad's father. 00:07:52.539 --> 00:07:54.839 And I'm also my dad's son. 00:07:55.159 --> 00:07:55.759 I'm both. 00:07:56.479 --> 00:07:57.219 And if you think about it, 00:07:57.240 --> 00:07:59.560 you realize that there's no way that that could happen. 00:07:59.639 --> 00:08:02.399 I would have to actually be my own grandfather. 00:08:02.879 --> 00:08:05.159 I want something that's mutually exclusive, 00:08:05.319 --> 00:08:06.719 two things that can't go together. 00:08:07.199 --> 00:08:09.899 That's the conundrum that Jesus is giving 00:08:09.899 --> 00:08:12.120 to the religious leaders here. 00:08:12.120 --> 00:08:13.300 He's telling them, 00:08:13.379 --> 00:08:16.060 hey, there's two things that we agree about. 00:08:16.480 --> 00:08:18.560 I believe in you believe in the Old Testament. 00:08:18.840 --> 00:08:21.540 How can those two things go together? 00:08:21.660 --> 00:08:23.660 Because we know that there's this Messiah 00:08:23.660 --> 00:08:24.680 that we're expecting. 00:08:25.420 --> 00:08:27.459 And we believe two things about that Messiah. 00:08:27.680 --> 00:08:31.959 First, he says this here in verses 35 and 37, 00:08:32.879 --> 00:08:36.200 that this Messiah is going to be the son of David. 00:08:36.659 --> 00:08:38.060 So verse 35, he said, 00:08:38.159 --> 00:08:40.580 how can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 00:08:40.580 --> 00:08:42.240 Then verse 37, 00:08:42.400 --> 00:08:43.740 so how is he his son? 00:08:44.460 --> 00:08:45.900 So fact number one, 00:08:46.240 --> 00:08:47.780 the Messiah, who we know to be Jesus, 00:08:47.940 --> 00:08:48.860 is David's son. 00:08:49.360 --> 00:08:51.080 But there's also fact number two, 00:08:51.200 --> 00:08:51.820 inconvenient, 00:08:52.879 --> 00:08:53.680 David himself, 00:08:53.840 --> 00:08:54.400 verse 35, 00:08:54.620 --> 00:08:55.540 in the Holy Spirit, 00:08:55.680 --> 00:08:56.040 declared, 00:08:56.180 --> 00:08:57.840 the Lord said to my Lord, 00:08:57.960 --> 00:08:58.879 sit at my right hand 00:08:58.879 --> 00:09:00.740 until I put your enemies under your feet. 00:09:01.139 --> 00:09:04.480 So the Messiah is not just David's son. 00:09:04.820 --> 00:09:06.800 He's also David's Lord. 00:09:06.799 --> 00:09:09.299 So it's similar again to me saying, 00:09:09.419 --> 00:09:10.659 hey, I'm not just my dad's son, 00:09:10.719 --> 00:09:11.659 I'm also his father. 00:09:12.319 --> 00:09:14.299 Now, one of the disadvantages we have 00:09:14.299 --> 00:09:15.599 of being separated this morning 00:09:15.599 --> 00:09:16.679 is if we had been in worship, 00:09:16.819 --> 00:09:19.019 I would have already read to you Psalm 110 00:09:19.019 --> 00:09:21.259 as our Old Testament reading, 00:09:21.399 --> 00:09:23.479 which is what Jesus is quoting from here. 00:09:23.740 --> 00:09:25.199 If you look in your Bible, 00:09:25.259 --> 00:09:28.459 and I encourage you to read Psalm 110 later this morning, 00:09:28.620 --> 00:09:29.899 you'll see that it's marked, 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:31.479 at least in the ESV translation, 00:09:31.779 --> 00:09:33.019 as a Psalm of David. 00:09:33.019 --> 00:09:35.000 So David's the one speaking here, 00:09:35.179 --> 00:09:38.759 and we have the first verse of Psalm 110 in verse 36. 00:09:39.519 --> 00:09:39.980 So when it says, 00:09:40.139 --> 00:09:41.539 the Lord said to my Lord, 00:09:41.579 --> 00:09:42.460 what he's saying is, 00:09:42.639 --> 00:09:44.679 God the Father said to the Messiah. 00:09:45.279 --> 00:09:47.340 And so that first Lord is God the Father. 00:09:47.639 --> 00:09:49.600 The second Lord is the Messiah. 00:09:49.740 --> 00:09:51.899 And so the critical word there is my Lord. 00:09:52.460 --> 00:09:55.559 David is saying the Messiah is my Lord. 00:09:56.579 --> 00:09:59.279 And that's what Jesus is honing in on here 00:09:59.279 --> 00:09:59.840 is to say, 00:09:59.840 --> 00:10:03.780 okay, we all agree that the Messiah is going to be David's son. 00:10:03.940 --> 00:10:06.660 We're told this over and over in the Old Testament. 00:10:07.240 --> 00:10:11.920 We also all agree that Psalm 110 is referring to the Messiah. 00:10:12.379 --> 00:10:13.480 And in that Psalm, 00:10:13.700 --> 00:10:16.700 we're being told that the Messiah is not David's son, 00:10:16.840 --> 00:10:17.660 but his Lord. 00:10:17.759 --> 00:10:21.180 So we have two things that cannot possibly go together. 00:10:21.720 --> 00:10:24.220 You've asked me, Jesus, many hard questions. 00:10:24.320 --> 00:10:27.120 And here I am to ask you a hard question. 00:10:27.120 --> 00:10:30.120 How can you, in fact, resolve these things? 00:10:30.279 --> 00:10:33.659 How can I be my dad's father and my 00:10:51.979 Now it tells us here the crowds were glad to hear Jesus, 00:10:52.099 --> 00:10:52.939 and they're glad to hear him 00:10:52.939 --> 00:10:54.559 because they can tell, again, 00:10:54.659 --> 00:10:56.679 just his insight and knowledge of the scriptures 00:10:56.679 --> 00:10:57.579 as an intelligence. 00:10:57.799 --> 00:11:01.000 He's doing something that I'm sure is satisfying for them, 00:11:01.059 --> 00:11:03.679 which he's putting the religious leaders on their heels. 00:11:03.819 --> 00:11:05.859 These men who keep coming and pretending 00:11:05.859 --> 00:11:07.279 as if they know everything. 00:11:07.879 --> 00:11:08.939 And Jesus is actually saying, 00:11:09.019 --> 00:11:10.839 look, there is a very simple problem 00:11:10.839 --> 00:11:13.139 that you don't know how to solve. 00:11:13.139 --> 00:11:18.220 This problem, though, is one that we know the answer to, 00:11:18.539 --> 00:11:19.559 and it's this. 00:11:20.039 --> 00:11:21.580 This can be resolved, 00:11:21.740 --> 00:11:22.860 that Jesus, the Messiah, 00:11:22.960 --> 00:11:25.139 can be both David's Lord above him 00:11:25.139 --> 00:11:26.860 and his son under him 00:11:26.860 --> 00:11:29.919 when we recognize Jesus' full identity, 00:11:30.080 --> 00:11:33.139 that Jesus is both God, 00:11:33.919 --> 00:11:35.939 he's both divine, and he's human. 00:11:36.679 --> 00:11:39.659 And when we understand that Jesus is 100% man 00:11:39.659 --> 00:11:41.120 and 100% God, 00:11:41.120 --> 00:11:43.340 we can untangle this riddle 00:11:43.340 --> 00:11:45.460 that Jesus presents to the religious leaders. 00:11:45.980 --> 00:11:49.460 He can be David's Lord in his divinity. 00:11:50.240 --> 00:11:51.360 In Jesus' divinity, 00:11:51.560 --> 00:11:54.519 we know he was already there at the beginning. 00:11:54.679 --> 00:11:56.000 John chapter 1 tells us, 00:11:56.120 --> 00:11:57.799 in the beginning was the Word, 00:11:57.860 --> 00:11:58.639 referring to Jesus, 00:11:59.039 --> 00:12:00.240 and the Word was God. 00:12:00.639 --> 00:12:03.019 So as Jesus functions in his divinity, 00:12:03.100 --> 00:12:04.820 according to his divine nature, 00:12:04.940 --> 00:12:05.580 of course, 00:12:05.980 --> 00:12:07.700 he is David's Lord 00:12:07.700 --> 00:12:09.960 because he pre-exists David. 00:12:09.960 --> 00:12:13.440 In his human nature, however, 00:12:13.780 --> 00:12:16.879 he comes after David chronologically. 00:12:17.560 --> 00:12:20.700 He is born after David is born. 00:12:21.960 --> 00:12:25.860 When, because Jesus is both 100% God 00:12:25.860 --> 00:12:27.480 and 100% man, 00:12:27.560 --> 00:12:30.300 because he's both human and divine, 00:12:30.420 --> 00:12:32.600 that is the way and the only way 00:12:32.600 --> 00:12:34.400 that these two things can come together. 00:12:34.399 --> 00:12:36.600 And so Jesus here is showing 00:12:36.600 --> 00:12:39.579 that the Old Testament has revealed all along 00:12:39.579 --> 00:12:41.620 that this son of David 00:12:41.620 --> 00:12:43.480 is going to be more than a man. 00:12:43.840 --> 00:12:46.459 He is going to be God himself. 00:12:47.799 --> 00:13:03.459 --> 00:13:06.159 to how I could be my dad's father and his son 00:13:06.159 --> 00:13:07.259 because that's impossible. 00:13:07.679 --> 00:13:11.179 But Jesus can be David's son and actually the heart of the law. 00:14:37.040 --> 00:14:38.560 And Jesus is rebuking them again. 00:14:38.700 --> 00:14:41.040 You care about solving these riddles, 00:14:41.160 --> 00:14:43.180 but you don't even realize who I am. 00:14:43.179 --> 00:14:45.399 You talk about the becoming Messiah, 00:14:45.539 --> 00:14:47.519 but then when he shows up, you miss him. 00:14:48.620 --> 00:14:49.959 The question for us though is, 00:14:50.359 --> 00:14:54.039 what do these three verses have to do with us in 2023? 00:14:54.359 --> 00:14:55.779 We're not the religious leaders. 00:14:56.319 --> sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet. 00:15:35.439 --> 00:15:36.259 And that's an idea, 00:15:36.360 --> 00:15:39.399 this image of Jesus sitting and the nations, 00:15:39.519 --> 00:15:41.159 he's using them as his footstool. 00:15:41.159 --> 00:15:46.039 Jesus has the greatest rulers and powers of this world as his Ottoman. 00:15:47.240 --> 00:15:49.980 That's what it means to be the Psalm 110 king. 00:15:50.299 --> 00:15:52.439 In verses five through seven of Psalm 110, 00:15:52.799 --> 00:15:54.980 we see he's shattering the nations of the earth, 00:15:55.279 --> 00:15:57.620 that Jesus acts as this great king. 00:15:57.959 --> 00:16:02.459 He comes as this great judge to bring judgment and justice to the earth. 00:16:02.460 --> 00:16:05.639 And so the encouragement is this. 00:16:05.639 --> 00:16:09.620 In a world that is filled with abuse, 00:16:10.400 --> 00:16:13.940 in a world that's filled with imperfect rulers, 00:16:14.180 --> 00:16:17.759 we find in Jesus a pure authority. 00:16:17.759 --> 00:16:25.000 In a world that is filled with limited authorities, 00:16:26.580 --> 00:16:27.580 temporary authorities, 00:16:27.580 --> 00:16:30.360 we have an authority that's permanent and powerful. 00:16:30.360 --> 00:16:40.519 And so the encouragement is that if and when someone who's in power uses that to exploit you, 00:16:40.919 --> 00:16:42.399 to abuse you, 00:16:42.519 --> 00:16:44.379 to take advantage of you, 00:16:44.919 --> 00:16:52.180 we know from Psalm 110 that that will not be the last word. 00:16:52.179 --> will not go on forever. 00:17:48.899 --> 00:17:52.740 And so there's an encouragement there for us to look forward with hope, 00:17:52.919 --> 00:17:55.099 knowing how the story is going to end, 00:19:39.279 --> 00:19:41.819 and he defines perfect authority in this way. 00:19:41.960 --> 00:19:42.059 He says, 00:19:42.200 --> 00:19:45.619 A perfect authority is an authority that loves you 00:19:45.619 --> 00:19:48.240 more than you love yourself. 00:19:49.059 --> 00:19:51.500 Perfect authority is one that loves you 00:19:51.500 --> 00:19:53.379 more than you love yourself. 00:19:53.380 --> 00:19:57.420 Now that's a little bit different than someone who loves their neighbor as themselves. 00:19:57.540 --> 00:19:58.880 That was what we saw last week. 00:19:59.160 --> 00:20:01.020 This And so the answer is not that we care for ourselves and protect ourselves against all odds. 00:21:01.120 --> 00:21:04.200 The answer is not that we prevent others from being in our lives. 00:21:04.279
