00:00:31.000 And what is the culture we want to build? 00:00:31.060 --> 00:00:37.460 Well, one of those things I think that we should be intentional to build into our church culture is a culture of discipleship. 00:00:37.679 --> 00:00:37.859 Okay. 00:00:38.060 --> 00:00:45.420 So I want to talk about that this morning and hopefully bring a sense of clarity from the scriptures. 00:00:46.420 --> 00:00:48.240 And we'll jump in. 00:00:48.240 --> 00:00:56.700 Well, before we jump in to the actual main text is Matthew 28, which many of you are familiar with, Matthew 28, 18 to 20. 00:00:56.700 --> 00:01:04.939 But before I say that, I think one thing that's happened in the context of discipleship is two things have been lowered, 00:01:04.939 --> 00:01:10.820 which created this kind of weird vacuum for discipleship to be interpreted in a wrong way. 00:01:11.400 --> 00:01:11.560 Okay. 00:01:11.560 --> 00:01:21.700 So the first one is, is that we've lowered the bar on what it means to be a Christian because so many people have been Christians in name only or have professed Christ. 00:01:22.040 --> 00:01:25.600 But it's like, okay, this isn't adding up. 00:01:25.820 --> 00:01:27.500 I don't think this person is really a Christian. 00:01:27.500 --> 00:01:38.900 And it's almost like we had people felt the need to create this new, this other term to define the people who actually are Christians, you know, the real Christians. 00:01:38.900 --> 00:01:47.400 And so we talked about, because people say things even, heard people say weird things like, well, he's a Christian, but he's just not walking with the Lord. 00:01:47.500 --> 00:01:51.460 It's like, well, that's kind of the same thing. 00:01:51.540 --> 00:01:52.380 You know, what do you mean? 00:01:52.400 --> 00:01:53.840 He's not walking with the Lord and he's a Christian. 00:01:55.540 --> 00:01:56.540 Things like that. 00:01:56.540 --> 00:02:05.600 And so we almost created, it's like, well, since Christian has been dumbed down, since Christian has been relegated to things that aren't really Christian, 00:02:06.460 --> 00:02:09.620 maybe disciple is something that's like, that's a real Christian. 00:02:10.040 --> 00:02:11.620 Yeah, you're a Christian, but are you a disciple? 00:02:11.939 --> 00:02:16.580 You know, it's almost like we've elevated this word disciple to mean something way more than a Christian. 00:02:16.980 --> 00:02:22.640 And I think it's really because we've lowered the bar on what it means to be a Christian and we shouldn't do that. 00:02:22.639 --> 00:02:28.539 In the same way, I think what also has happened is we've lowered the bar on what it means to be the church, 00:02:28.539 --> 00:02:34.719 because there's a lot of churches in name that don't really make disciples. 00:02:35.279 --> 00:02:39.279 Churches in name that don't do a lot of discipleship or teaching people how to obey Jesus, 00:02:39.479 --> 00:02:43.619 or it's only, or they do, but it's only from a pulpit. 00:02:43.779 --> 00:02:45.719 Like it's not life on life. 00:02:45.819 --> 00:02:48.819 It's not in each other's lives the way Jesus did it. 00:02:48.819 --> 00:02:56.120 But then what ends up happening is we think, oh, okay, well, because church has been so dumbed down, 00:02:56.219 --> 00:02:59.919 well, then I have to think of, well, I have to create other things to make disciples. 00:03:00.239 --> 00:03:02.900 You know, there's, yeah, you're a part of church, but are you making disciples? 00:03:03.159 --> 00:03:06.659 And it's like, well, is there a kind of church that doesn't make disciples? 00:03:07.379 --> 00:03:11.620 We've dumbed it down so much to think that churches don't make disciples. 00:03:11.620 --> 00:03:19.120 And then we've even gone farther and people start whole parachurch organizations just so that they can make disciples. 00:03:19.840 --> 00:03:27.539 You hear what I'm saying here where it's just like, well, you know, I started this parachurch thing to, so I can make disciples. 00:03:27.640 --> 00:03:29.020 And I'm thinking, really? 00:03:29.400 --> 00:03:35.759 Didn't Jesus start something that has part of that word in it, church, that was supposed to make disciples? 00:03:35.920 --> 00:03:37.120 Why do you need another entity? 00:03:37.300 --> 00:03:39.780 Why do you need another thing to make disciples? 00:03:39.780 --> 00:03:41.140 That's what the church is supposed to do. 00:03:41.140 --> 00:03:43.300 Well, yeah, but the churches are doing that. 00:03:44.319 --> 00:03:47.620 So start a new one, like start a new entity. 00:03:47.840 --> 00:03:52.300 Why not just make the one that God created, that God is building, and just do it right? 00:03:53.159 --> 00:03:58.520 But what ended up happening is people, many of this kind of proliferation of parachurches all over the place, 00:03:59.139 --> 00:04:04.780 basically doing the things that they couldn't do in a church because a lot of churches were just relegated to, 00:04:04.780 --> 00:04:08.439 the only guy who could do that was the guy standing behind the pulpit who was the paid professional. 00:04:08.439 --> 00:04:11.020 And so there was no room to do discipleship. 00:04:11.759 --> 00:04:16.319 And so we had to start these, people start these parachurch organizations just so they have an avenue for it. 00:04:16.740 --> 00:04:19.560 And that's unfortunate, but it's also just not right. 00:04:19.620 --> 00:04:21.699 It's not what God initially intended. 00:04:21.800 --> 00:04:26.000 So I think you have this dumbing down of the word Christian and dumbling down of the word church. 00:04:26.600 --> 00:04:31.319 And so then you have like this elevated, like disciple becomes something I don't think it was supposed to mean. 00:04:31.319 --> discipleship that a lot of times I'll hear things when people talk about making disciples. 00:05:01.980 --> 00:05:03.600 I'm like, where are you getting that from? 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:10.480 I mean, I know where people do that or I know what stream of the church is into that. 00:05:10.560 --> 00:05:13.819 But my question is, where in the Bible does it say that? 00:05:13.920 --> 00:05:16.800 Like that's a strong take or a strong opinion. 00:05:17.139 --> 00:05:18.980 But is it grounded in the scriptures? 00:05:19.079 --> 00:05:20.379 And that's what we need to ask ourselves. 00:05:20.379 --> 00:05:25.100 Is what we're talking about when we talk about discipleship, is it grounded in the scriptures? 00:05:25.300 --> 00:05:28.779 Not is it, well, that's what I've, I've been a Christian belief. 00:05:57.199 --> 00:06:03.819 You should question that conviction and make sure it's aligned to the scriptures. 00:06:04.159 --> 00:06:09.799 So now let's jump into Matthew chapter 28, starting verse 18 through 20. 00:06:10.519 --> 00:06:12.279 What many call the Great Commission. 00:06:12.279 --> 00:06:13.199 It says, 00:06:17.779 --> 00:06:18.779 Okay. 00:06:18.779 --> 00:06:18.779 00:06:18.779 --> 00:06:39.159 So let's, let's, let's break this down. 00:06:39.160 --> 00:06:40.560 Let's look at this in more depth. 00:06:41.040 --> 00:06:45.360 First question when I look at this scripture is who is he speaking to? 00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:46.180 Okay. 00:06:46.520 --> 00:06:47.660 Who's he talking to? 00:06:47.740 --> 00:06:48.700 That makes a difference. 00:06:49.020 --> 00:06:51.440 Well, he's talking to his disciples. 00:06:51.439 --> 00:06:57.540 So speaking to his disciples, he says, uh, to make disciples. 00:06:57.939 --> 00:07:00.639 That gives us a clue about what a disciple is. 00:07:01.459 --> 00:07:03.240 Disciples make disciples. 00:07:03.740 --> 00:07:08.600 There's no such thing as a disciple doesn't make a disciple because the disciple is supposed 00:07:08.600 --> 00:07:12.920 to obey what Jesus commanded and Jesus commanded to make disciples. 00:07:12.920 --> 00:07:18.100 So it's kind of an oxymoron to say, well, yeah, I'm a disciple doesn't make disciples. 00:07:18.220 --> 00:07:19.319 No, that's not a disciple. 00:07:19.840 --> 00:07:22.660 He, he, he makes it clear here, go make disciples. 00:07:22.660 --> can't, you can't stay where you're at. 00:07:45.299 --> 00:07:46.279 You need to go. 00:07:46.739 --> 00:07:52.620 You need to, uh, pursue people, pursue people to, uh, be made into disciples. 00:07:53.679 --> 00:08:00.079 So, uh, sometimes we think, you know, well, I kind of like where I'm comfortable. 00:08:00.079 --> 00:08:02.959 I just want to do my own thing and people can come to me. 00:08:11.039 It says, go, go, go make disciples. 00:08:11.399 --> 00:08:11.679 Okay. 00:08:11.899 --> 00:08:12.539 So go. 00:08:13.560 --> 00:08:20.819 Secondly, it says make, which then also brings us to the concept that disciples are made. 00:08:21.239 --> 00:08:21.679 Okay. 00:08:22.099 --> 00:08:23.099 Disciples are made. 00:08:23.259 --> 00:08:28.939 Now, if you know, something's made, you know, like you see something like, oh, that's an 00:08:28.939 --> 00:08:29.599 interesting thing. 00:08:29.639 --> 00:08:31.219 I would like to have that. 00:08:31.679 --> 00:08:32.720 Somebody made that. 00:08:32.720 --> 00:08:35.120 How do you make that is the question, right? 00:08:35.500 --> 00:08:38.079 If you have, you know, something you eat, it's like, wow, that was great. 00:08:38.080 --> 00:08:40.139 How did you make that, right? 00:08:40.160 --> 00:08:44.100 When you see something that you like or enjoy, you usually ask the question, how is that made? 00:08:44.340 --> 00:08:46.960 Well, we know that disciples are made. 00:08:47.060 --> 00:08:51.000 So the question then that we should have is how are disciples made? 00:08:51.100 --> 00:08:52.040 It begs the question. 00:08:52.919 --> 00:08:57.159 And that's a question we shouldn't just answer on our own apart from the scriptures. 00:08:57.159 --> 00:09:01.000 We just get to say, well, this is how I'd like to do it or this is how I'd like to do it. 00:09:01.199 --> 00:09:04.000 And where there's freedom, let there be freedom. 00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:08.480 But where the Bible says you should do it 00:12:13.100 --> 00:12:15.740 Clearly, he's not telling us to baptize people who aren't Christians. 00:12:15.740 --> 00:12:22.120 That, the fact that he's saying, go baptize people, we can, we can allude from that, that 00:12:22.120 --> 00:12:25.659 he wants us to preach the gospel to people and see people get saved. 00:12:26.259 --> 00:12:26.639 Right? 00:12:26.639 --> 00:12:31.039 The first how of discipleship is they have to become a Christian. 00:12:32.059 --> 00:12:34.919 Like, we're not going to disciple someone who's not. 00:12:35.039 --> 00:12:39.199 So when he's saying, go disciple people, he's saying, baptize them. 00:12:39.899 --> 00:12:42.319 Preach the gospel to them, get them saved, and then baptize them. 00:12:43.100 --> 00:12:47.740 And then the second thing is, disciple? 00:13:16.960 --> 00:13:21.820 Well, a clue of this is, I think, Acts chapter 11, verse 26. 00:13:22.620 --> 00:13:26.240 Before Acts chapter 11, there's no mention of a Christian. 00:13:26.480 --> 00:13:27.879 There's only mention of disciples. 00:13:28.620 --> 00:13:28.800 Right? 00:13:29.200 --> 00:13:34.660 And then in Acts chapter 11, 26, it says, and in Antioch, the disciples were first called 00:13:34.660 --> 00:13:35.480 Christians. 00:13:36.540 --> 00:13:40.480 So you got to ask the question, is a disciple a Christian? 00:13:41.460 --> 00:13:42.379 Are they synonymous? 00:13:43.120 --> 00:13:44.680 Or is a disciple more than a Christian? 00:13:44.679 --> 00:13:46.979 I don't think a disciple is. 00:13:47.059 --> 00:13:51.019 I believe that when he says, All right, let's look at them. 00:15:10.120 --> 00:15:14.679 And I think if you look at these seven things, these also are great things to think about 00:15:14.679 --> 00:15:21.580 when you have a new
