00:05:21.180 --> 00:05:22.459 Who is Jesus? 00:05:22.459 --> 00:05:26.680 And we are using these four titles that Jesus is given here 00:05:26.680 --> 00:05:29.459 in the sixth verse of Isaiah chapter 9. 00:05:29.659 --> 00:05:32.879 So last week we talked about Jesus as wonderful counselor, 00:05:33.680 --> 00:05:38.419 as the one who unfolds God's wise plans for his people, 00:05:38.740 --> 00:05:42.279 who gives direction to where life is truly found, 00:05:42.459 --> 00:05:45.719 who shines light on the proper paths for us, 00:05:46.199 --> 00:05:48.679 who in fact himself is that light 00:05:48.680 --> 00:05:50.840 and is the way to the Father. 00:05:52.139 --> 00:05:55.920 This morning we are going to talk about Jesus as mighty God. 00:05:56.600 --> 00:06:00.280 The mighty God who can carry out his wise plans. 00:06:00.800 --> 00:06:01.900 The one who is capable, 00:06:02.100 --> 00:06:07.040 who is able to achieve the ends of his wonderful counsel. 00:06:07.040 --> 00:06:11.240 Isaiah describes it this way in chapter 14. 00:06:12.260 --> 00:06:12.640 He says, 00:06:12.740 --> 00:06:15.500 This is the purpose that is purposed concerning the whole earth. 00:06:15.600 --> 00:06:18.120 This is the hand that is stretched out over all the nations. 00:06:18.660 --> 00:06:21.340 For the Lord of hosts has purposed and who will annul it? 00:08:52.179 --> 00:08:55.079 Who in this passage is the mighty God? 00:08:55.459 --> 00:08:58.919 It's the promised baby in the manger, isn't it? 00:08:59.819 --> 00:09:00.679 It's Jesus. 00:09:02.099 --> 00:09:05.379 The reality of the promised child being divine 00:09:05.379 --> 00:09:07.500 is evident in all four of these titles. 00:09:07.739 --> 00:09:10.539 We talked last week of Wonderful Counselor, 00:09:10.539 --> 00:09:13.759 that Jesus was to be one with wisdom 00:09:13.759 --> 00:09:16.799 that was supernatural beyond human comprehension. 00:09:17.919 --> 00:09:20.579 But the divine nature of the promised child 00:09:20.579 --> 00:09:24.839 is most clear in this title of God himself 00:09:24.839 --> 00:09:25.980 given to Jesus. 00:09:26.419 --> 00:09:27.939 Mighty God. 00:09:28.899 --> 00:09:30.579 When we talk about that mystery 00:09:30.579 --> 00:09:33.639 of Jesus being the mighty God, 00:09:33.879 --> 00:09:36.599 we talk about it in terms of him being fully God 00:09:36.600 --> 00:09:38.060 and fully man, right? 00:09:38.840 --> 00:09:40.620 A reality that in some ways 00:09:40.620 --> 00:09:43.220 defies our complete comprehension. 00:09:44.159 --> 00:09:46.360 But what's happened in recent decades 00:09:46.360 --> 00:09:47.940 is that there's been a move away 00:09:47.940 --> 00:09:50.019 from appreciating that mystery 00:09:50.019 --> 00:09:52.580 and towards trying to take it and say, 00:09:52.680 --> 00:09:54.620 here's how we'll handle this mystery. 00:09:54.980 --> 00:09:57.700 It's actually that Jesus was not divine at all. 00:09:58.940 --> 00:10:01.440 In fact, he never claimed to be. 00:10:01.440 --> 00:10:05.040 And so, many people, 00:10:05.520 --> 00:10:07.240 particularly many scholars, 00:10:07.480 --> 00:10:09.620 even those who would identify themselves 00:10:09.620 --> 00:10:10.380 as Christians 00:10:10.380 --> 00:10:13.800 and claim to follow the moral teachings of Jesus, 00:10:14.320 --> 00:10:16.100 they've argued that being divine 00:10:16.100 --> 00:10:18.500 was simply not on Jesus' radar at all. 00:10:19.500 --> 00:10:21.320 It was something made up by his followers 00:10:21.320 --> 00:10:22.580 after he was gone. 00:10:23.100 --> 00:10:24.660 And that this is what he meant 00:10:24.660 --> 00:10:26.240 and this is what he would have claimed. 00:10:27.080 --> 00:10:29.020 And this is standard fare these days 00:10:29.019 --> 00:10:31.139 in religious studies courses 00:10:31.139 --> 00:10:32.340 on college campuses. 00:10:32.639 --> 00:10:34.720 It's standard fare in many divinity schools. 00:10:35.899 --> 00:10:37.220 And so, because those of us 00:10:37.220 --> 00:10:38.399 who started hearing this 00:10:38.399 --> 00:10:39.340 when we were in school 00:10:39.340 --> 00:10:40.740 are getting older now, 00:10:40.860 --> 00:10:43.379 it's standard fare among our friends 00:10:43.379 --> 00:10:44.720 and our neighbors 00:10:44.720 --> 00:10:46.759 and those we do life with. 00:10:47.439 --> 00:10:49.759 That this is what we're supposed to believe. 00:10:50.879 --> 00:10:52.559 And I say to you this morning, 00:10:52.679 --> 00:10:54.779 the significance of Jesus' deity 00:10:54.779 --> 00:10:57.779 is of such fundamental importance 00:10:57.779 --> 00:10:58.840 to our faith. 00:10:58.840 --> 00:11:02.780 It's foundational to all of the early church creeds 00:11:02.780 --> 00:11:04.879 and confessions of the church. 00:11:05.100 --> 00:11:06.680 That Jesus was fully God 00:11:06.680 --> 00:11:07.639 and fully man 00:11:07.639 --> 00:11:08.940 has been vital 00:11:08.940 --> 00:11:11.440 to what it means to be a Christian. 00:11:12.220 --> 00:11:13.460 It's worth talking about 00:11:13.460 --> 00:11:14.800 for a few minutes this morning. 00:11:16.480 --> 00:11:17.680 To be honest with you, 00:11:17.800 --> 00:11:18.899 it astounds me 00:11:18.899 --> 00:11:21.160 that scholars can look honestly 00:11:21.160 --> 00:11:22.160 at the New Testament 00:11:22.160 --> 00:11:25.160 and choose sometimes to ignore 00:11:25.160 --> 00:11:26.900 the myriad ways 00:11:26.899 --> 00:11:28.620 Jesus claims to be divine 00:11:28.620 --> 00:11:31.079 and to concoct other explanations 00:11:31.079 --> 00:11:33.679 for things that are more easily explained 00:11:33.679 --> 00:11:36.000 by that single fact. 00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:39.759 Where do we see Jesus as mighty God 00:11:39.759 --> 00:11:40.740 in the Gospels? 00:11:57.800 --> 00:11:59.680 They took Him around the side of the building, 00:11:59.800 --> 00:12:00.560 climbed up on the roof, 00:12:00.639 --> 00:12:01.080 cut a hole, 00:12:01.200 --> 00:12:02.879 lowered Him down in front of Jesus, 00:12:02.879 --> 00:12:04.360 and He gets there 00:12:04.360 --> 00:12:05.399 and Jesus says what? 00:12:06.200 --> 00:12:06.879 Verse 20, 00:12:08.939 --> 00:12:11.299 Man, your sins are forgiven you. 00:12:12.320 --> 00:12:13.860 And the scribes and Pharisees 00:12:13.860 --> 00:12:15.220 began to question saying, 00:12:15.539 --> 00:12:17.200 Who is this who speaks blasphemies?
