He's a master communicator. 00:00:20.300 --> 00:00:21.000 ! 00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:27.000 I don't know whether you noticed in the reading, there's not one long word, there's not one difficult 00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:28.000 ! 00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:31.000 In the whole of John 6. 00:00:31.000 --> 00:00:38.000 Jesus takes simple concepts and makes the most profound points. 00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:45.000 And so let me take you back to about five hours ago to the lunch table. 00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:50.000 As you sat down and ate your meal, maybe your feast, 00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:56.000 whoever was the host of that table, whoever's table it was, said at the end of that meal, 00:00:56.000 --> 00:00:59.000 do you want any more or are we done? 00:00:59.000 --> 00:01:06.000 And you may have replied, I'm stuffed. 00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:08.000 Or I'm full. 00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:12.000 I couldn't eat another thing. 00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:15.000 That's a common human experience. 00:01:15.000 --> 00:01:17.000 It's probably too common in my case. 00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:18.000 I'm full. 00:01:18.000 --> 00:01:23.000 It may be that the cook said at the dinner table, have you had your fill? 00:01:23.000 --> 00:01:24.000 I couldn't eat another thing. 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:28.000 Your belt groaning under the strain of your growing belly. 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:33.000 But that feeling doesn't last, does it? 00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:37.000 When you go home tonight, you will probably eat again. 00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:41.000 You'll be full at lunchtime, but you'll eat at summertime. 00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:45.000 You might be full, still full from this lunchtime. 00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:49.000 But when you wake up tomorrow morning, you will eat at breakfast time. 00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:50.000 Certainly at lunchtime. 00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:55.000 Being full physically doesn't last, does it? 00:01:55.000 --> 00:02:00.000 And that is the beautiful little picture tucked away in John chapter 6. 00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:03.000 And the key verse is there in verse 35. 00:02:03.000 --> 00:02:04.000 Can you see it? 00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:06.000 My mic is playing tricks on me, isn't it? 00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:10.000 Is someone, can someone, it may not be echoing for you, it is for me. 00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:15.000 Verse 35, Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. 00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:18.000 Whoever comes to me shall not hunger. 00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:22.000 And whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:32.000 And so can you see Jesus uses this picture, doesn't he, of physical eating and being full. 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:35.000 And he teaches us the most profound lesson. 00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:39.000 He shows us our greatest need through the simplest picture. 00:02:39.000 --> 00:02:43.000 And Jesus gives the answer to satisfaction. 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:45.000 The answer to being full. 00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:48.000 The key text is there in verse 35. 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:54.000 And I'm sure as I read those words in verse 35, those words are familiar, aren't they? 00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:56.000 Perhaps they're too familiar to you tonight. 00:02:56.000 --> 00:02:59.000 But they are profound words. 00:02:59.000 --> 00:03:06.000 What Jesus wants tonight is that you would come to him. 00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:13.000 And that you would recognize that in him alone you can find true satisfaction. 00:03:13.000 --> 00:03:14.000 True life. 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:16.000 And not only in this world. 00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:20.000 But the life that you were designed for. 00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:22.000 But also in the world which is to come. 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:25.000 A life that has meaning and significance and purpose. 00:03:25.000 --> 00:03:30.000 The opposite to what Jesus is promising here is death. 00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:31.000 It is starvation. 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:32.000 It is despair. 00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:34.000 It is purposelessness. 00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:37.000 And so point one. 00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:42.000 Jesus is saying to you, it's not this bread, but the bread of life. 00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:45.000 Not this bread, but the bread of life. 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:48.000 There's four scenes in the chapter. 00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:50.000 If you were with us last week in chapter five. 00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:54.000 You'll see that we were in the temple in the capital of the religious body, Israel. 00:03:54.000 --> 00:03:57.000 The Jewish leaders, far from accepting Jesus as Messiah. 00:03:57.000 --> 00:04:01.000 Which was clearly the case as far from receiving his words. 00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:04.000 That he was the son from the father. 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:05.000 That he'd clearly demonstrated. 00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:07.000 Instead of accepting that, they want to kill him. 00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:08.000 They hate him. 00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:11.000 Because he's doing work on the Sabbath. 00:04:11.000 --> 00:04:14.000 He's doing what the Lord God alone can do. 00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:18.000 Because he's calling himself God the Father. 00:04:18.000 --> 00:04:20.000 Making himself equal with God. 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:24.000 And as we remember, far from backing down. 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:26.000 Sorry, it might be my problem. 00:04:26.000 --> 00:04:27.000 The thing's hanging down. 00:04:27.000 --> 00:04:32.000 As we remember, far from, instead of backing down, Jesus doubles down, doesn't he? 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:34.000 And he opens up to them his identity. 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:38.000 He gives three witnesses to prove his claim. 00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:40.000 He says, first of all, John the Baptist. 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:42.000 The great prophet of the Old Testament. 00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:43.000 He said, didn't he? 00:04:43.000 --> 00:04:46.000 Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. 00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:50.000 This man who so clearly turned the world upside down. 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:52.000 He was clearly a prophet of God. 00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:53.000 And he says, Jesus is the one. 00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:55.000 He's the son of God. 00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:58.000 And then there's the evidence of Jesus' works. 00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:01.000 The way he, with just a word, healed a man. 00:05:01.000 --> 00:05:04.000 Who'd been lying there for 38 years paralyzed beside a pool. 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:06.000 A picture of despair and helplessness. 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:09.000 But with a word, Jesus has given him life. 00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:11.000 And then the ultimate witness. 00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:13.000 The Father himself. 00:05:13.000 --> 00:05:17.000 That mind shift of what scripture is all about. 00:05:17.000 --> 00:05:19.000 The testimony of God the Father. 00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:24.000 From generation to generation, preparing the way for the coming of his son. 00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:27.000 It's crystal clear who Jesus is at the end of chapter 5. 00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:30.000 He says in chapter 5, verse 24. 00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:36.000 Whoever hears my word and believes him who has sent me has eternal life. 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:41.000 He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 00:05:41.000 --> 00:05:44.000 But they would not accept him, would they? 00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:51.000 They would not accept him and they did not receive him because they wanted the glory that comes from man and not from God. 00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:53.000 And so that was last week. 00:05:53.000 --> 00:05:56.000 And now we're back in the North Territory in Galilee in verse 1. 00:05:56.000 --> 00:05:57.000 And there's four different scenes. 00:05:57.000 --> 00:05:58.000 Let's track them. 00:05:58.000 --> 00:06:00.000 Scene 1, verses 1 to 15. 00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:03.000 We're on the eastern bank of the Sea of Galilee. 00:06:03.000 --> 00:06:05.000 It's the opposite side to the populated area. 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:07.000 You're in a kind of desert region. 00:06:08.000 --> 00:06:11.000 Opposite Cana where Jesus turned water into wine. 00:06:11.000 --> 00:06:16.000 And here in verse 1 to 15, he's followed by an enormous crowd. 00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:20.000 We read that the crowd is 5,000 people, 5,000 men. 00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:23.000 But when you count the women and children, it's closer to 20,000. 00:06:23.000 --> 00:06:26.000 I try to think about that in local terms. 00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:29.000 Think of Brentford's football stadium just off the M4. 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:34.000 It's filled to capacity with a couple of thousand more on the pitch. 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:36.000 That's the amount of people that are there. 00:06:37.000 --> 00:06:41.000 And this 20,000 strong crowd, they follow him out to this unpopulated desert area. 00:06:41.000 --> 00:06:45.000 And verse 5, Jesus is up on the mountain with his disciples. 00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:48.000 He looks up, he sees the crowd surging towards him. 00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:50.000 Hungry, no doubt, from a day of travel. 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:54.000 And in verse 6, he knows what he's about to do. 00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:58.000 He calls over the local boy Philip from Bethsaida. 00:06:58.000 --> 00:07:02.000 And says, Philip, where can we find a place? 00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:05.000 Where can we find a kind of food truck, local cafe, restaurant? 00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:07.000 Where can we feed these people who are so hungry? 00:07:09.000 --> 00:07:12.000 And Philip's reply in a loose translation is, are you nuts? 00:07:13.000 --> 00:07:16.000 We've got 200 denarii, that's 200 days wages. 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:19.000 But even that is not going to be enough to feed them. 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:24.000 Andrew pipes up in verse 8 and says, look over there. 00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:27.000 There's a guy with five loaves of barley and a fish. 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:32.000 But in an act of sheer genius, he admits that that's not going to be enough to feed all the people. 00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:37.000 Verse 10, Jesus has them all sitting down in a grassy area. 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:47.000 And he has this fish and bread passed around such that it doesn't just provide a bit, but they are full. 00:07:47.000 --> 00:07:48.000 Full. 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:50.000 Can you see what it says? 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:54.000 And when they had eaten their fill. 00:07:56.000 --> 00:07:57.000 Think back to the lunch table, when they were stuffed. 00:07:58.000 --> 00:08:01.000 And there are 12 baskets left over. 00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:04.000 Scene 2 is verses 16 to 21. 00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:07.000 The scene is the Sea of Galilee itself. 00:08:07.000 --> 00:08:13.000 And in verse 16, the disciples have made their way down to the beach side where the boat is. 00:08:13.000 --> 00:08:17.000 They get into the boat, they begin rowing to the other side, to Capernaum, which is a number of miles away. 00:08:17.000 --> 00:08:19.000 Verse 18, it's pitch black. 00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:22.000 The wind is howling, the sea is churning. 00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:25.000 They are terrified even though they're experienced fishermen. 00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:27.000 It's Psalm 77, which we sang earlier. 00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:35.000 And they're terrified particularly because Jesus is walking beside them on the sea. 00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:38.000 Though they don't realise it. 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:44.000 To calm their fears, Jesus announces himself and he says, I am. 00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:47.000 It is I do not fear. 00:08:49.000 --> 00:08:50.000 He's sticking into the boat. 00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:55.000 And verse 21, all of a sudden they find themselves on the other side. 00:08:57.000 --> 00:09:00.000 Scene 3 begins in verse 22 and ends in verse 24. 00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:01.000 It's the next day. 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:03.000 The sun is up. 00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:07.000 The crowd goes down to the boat, but it's gone. 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:08.000 It's not there. 00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:10.000 The disciples are gone too. 00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:16.000 And they knew that Jesus didn't enter the boat with the disciples and yet Jesus is no longer there either. 00:09:17.000 --> 00:09:22.000 Verse 23, there's a load of other boats from an area called Tiberias, which is the southwest. 00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:26.000 And they've made this huge journey to try and find Jesus. 00:09:27.000 --> 00:09:28.000 They've heard of his miraculous feeding. 00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:30.000 And they want fed too. 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:35.000 And in verse 24, the whole crowd confers together. 00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:39.000 The crowd plus the newcomers hop into a boat in hot pursuit of Jesus. 00:09:39.000 --> 00:09:40.000 They chase him down. 00:09:41.000 --> 00:09:42.000 The great feeder of people. 00:09:43.000 --> 00:09:45.000 And they head to Capernaum where he almost certainly is. 00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:47.000 And that takes us to scene 4. 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:51.000 Which runs from verse 25 to the end of the chapter. 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:53.000 You're in a busy city. 00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:56.000 Verse 59, we learn that they're actually in the synagogue. 00:09:56.000 --> 00:09:59.000 That's where they've tracked Jesus down to. 00:09:59.000 --> 00:10:00.000 Presumably he's teaching. 00:10:01.000 --> 00:10:06.000 Verse 26, Jesus sees their hearts and he knows their motivation. 00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:14.000 Why have you put so much effort traversing the whole country, going walkabout in the desert, jumping on a boat to track me down? 00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:18.000 You're not actually seeking me, Jesus says. 00:10:19.000 --> 00:10:20.000 You want food. 00:10:23.000 --> 00:10:24.000 Glance with me at verse 26. 00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:38.059 Jesus says, truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 00:10:38.059 --> 00:10:45.059 But, just as a kind of sidebar, there is a kind of false Christianity, isn't there? 00:10:45.059 --> 00:10:49.359 There is a kind of Christianity which is the kind of feeding Christianity. 00:10:51.059 --> 00:10:55.099 The kind of Christianity which treats Jesus as a slot machine. 00:10:57.239 --> 00:11:02.039 Jesus as the man who dispenses the things that we want in this world. 00:11:02.039 --> 00:11:07.719 A Christianity that demands gifts, but in the end doesn't have much interest in the giver. 00:11:08.059 --> 00:11:12.619 And that isn't the seeking that finds the real Jesus. 00:11:13.119 --> 00:11:14.939 That kind of seeking is empty. 00:11:15.119 --> 00:11:17.939 That kind of seeking of Jesus isn't saving. 00:11:18.479 --> 00:11:19.979 It's not a satisfying seeking. 00:11:21.739 --> 00:11:24.500 No, the seeking that Jesus wants is a different type of seeking. 00:11:24.619 --> 00:11:25.679 We'll think more of that in a minute. 00:11:26.119 --> 00:11:28.659 The people want more bread. 00:11:28.779 --> 00:11:30.619 They want their bellies to be full. 00:11:32.839 --> 00:11:37.979 And the difficulty for us is, in healing, bread is so abundant. 00:11:38.059 --> 00:11:38.539 Isn't it? 00:11:40.219 --> 00:11:44.639 You can go and have sourdough. 00:11:45.419 --> 00:11:49.579 You can have the seeded GI cob in Lidl, whatever that is. 00:11:50.359 --> 00:11:53.139 Farmer's loaf, sliced white, 50-50. 00:11:54.339 --> 00:11:55.500 It's on tap, isn't it, all of the time. 00:11:55.979 --> 00:11:57.859 But of course that wasn't the case in the first century. 00:11:57.860 --> 00:12:00.820 People prayed, didn't they? 00:12:01.519 --> 00:12:04.500 Give us today our daily bread. 00:12:04.580 --> 00:12:06.100 Because daily bread was a necessity. 00:12:07.700 --> 00:12:11.000 And each day you would go and buy bread from the wages of the day before. 00:12:11.519 --> 00:12:14.240 These people desperately needed bread. 00:12:14.240 --> 00:12:16.240 They were right. 00:12:16.320 --> 00:12:17.639 Profoundly right in one sense. 00:12:18.860 --> 00:12:19.799 In seeking Jesus. 00:12:20.139 --> 00:12:24.240 They were seeking someone who could provide them with that physical bread. 00:12:25.299 --> 00:12:27.820 And they're seeking him earnestly, verse 24 and 25. 00:12:28.220 --> 00:12:28.980 They are seeking. 00:12:29.460 --> 00:12:34.080 And in verse 30, they ask for a sign, don't they, to see and believe. 00:12:34.080 --> 00:12:39.000 They are really seeking in one sense. 00:12:39.300 --> 00:12:40.560 But in another sense, they're not. 00:12:42.180 --> 00:12:44.139 They are blind to who Jesus is. 00:12:45.960 --> 00:12:47.280 They see him as a prophet. 00:12:48.720 --> 00:12:53.580 Earlier on in the passage, verse 14, this is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world. 00:12:54.220 --> 00:12:55.259 He's a miracle worker. 00:12:57.060 --> 00:12:59.420 He's a bit like Moses on behalf of God, they think. 00:12:59.460 --> 00:13:00.259 Not God himself. 00:13:00.259 --> 00:13:02.720 Defeating the enemies of God's people. 00:13:03.019 --> 00:13:04.179 Giving them what they want. 00:13:05.899 --> 00:13:13.319 They see him in the next verse, in verse 15, as a merely human king who will come and will overthrow the Romans once and for all. 00:13:14.600 --> 00:13:16.580 So that they could have bread in abundance. 00:13:17.879 --> 00:13:22.139 Without the pressures of an oppressive ruling regime. 00:13:23.740 --> 00:13:25.559 And in verse 30, can you see it? 00:13:25.759 --> 00:13:27.200 They ask for a sign. 00:13:27.279 --> 00:13:28.240 I think that's extraordinary. 00:13:30.259 --> 00:13:34.679 They've just had a sign a few verses ago of Jesus feeding 20,000 people. 00:13:35.840 --> 00:13:38.319 From five loaves of bread and a couple of fish. 00:13:40.059 --> 00:13:48.919 But again, their words reveal the reality that they're not really actually interested in a sign pointing to Jesus so that they will believe in him. 00:13:50.700 --> 00:13:52.259 They're thinking with their stomach. 00:13:53.840 --> 00:13:55.639 Only with the eyes of this world. 00:13:55.639 --> 00:13:58.919 So verse 30. 00:14:01.100 --> 00:14:03.059 They said, then what sign do you do? 00:16:05.639 --> 00:16:06.559 Into the promised land. 00:16:06.979 --> 00:16:09.399 It was an epic rescue. 00:16:11.779 --> 00:16:15.719 It was a picture though of the ultimate rescue that is to come in the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:16:15.720 --> 00:16:23.399 And so we don't have a Moses figure who led the people through the sea. 00:16:24.360 --> 00:16:26.660 We don't have a Moses figure, a prophet. 00:16:26.980 --> 00:16:28.920 But we have the Lord himself, don't we?
