of the turning point of Jesus' earthly ministry. 00:08:30.300 --> 00:08:39.500 See, up to this point, Jesus was, his ministry was centered in Galilee and he was teaching and he was healing and he was 00:10:47.180 But Jesus received a lot of rejection as well. 00:10:47.940 --> 00:10:51.000 That not every time the gospel was preached, everybody was excited. 00:10:51.300 --> 00:10:53.480 Not every time somebody was healed, they think, wow, praise the Lord. 00:10:53.680 --> 00:10:55.740 No, many times they said, let's kill this guy. 00:10:56.640 --> 00:10:57.860 He received it a lot. 00:10:57.940 --> 00:10:59.680 But here he does as well. 00:10:59.759 --> 00:11:02.879 But he sends the disciples and says, listen, I'm going to Jerusalem. 00:11:02.960 --> 00:11:04.160 But let's stop in Samaria. 00:11:04.400 --> 00:11:05.480 Let's stop in these villages. 00:11:05.480 --> 00:11:07.040 And let's preach the gospel. 00:11:07.039 --> 00:11:08.779 Let's preach the message of the kingdom. 00:11:09.939 --> 00:11:10.679 And he goes there. 00:11:10.740 --> 00:11:13.459 And the Bible says in verse number 53 that they didn't receive him. 00:11:13.879 --> 00:11:17.139 Because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. 00:11:17.959 --> 00:11:19.399 Now to us, we kind of just read through that. 00:11:19.459 --> 00:11:23.899 And we're thinking, why did James and John just lose their mind and try to call fire down from heaven? 00:11:24.939 --> 00:11:27.379 See, the Samaritans were descendants of the Jews. 00:11:27.519 --> 00:11:33.299 But they had intermarried with the Assyrian foreigners kind of after the conquest a long time ago in the Old Testament. 00:11:33.599 --> 00:11:34.899 Right around 2 Kings. 00:11:34.899 --> 00:11:39.419 And many of the Samaritans, they believed, they would say they believed in the same God. 00:11:39.919 --> 00:11:43.100 They accepted the Pentateuch, the first five books of Moses. 00:11:43.639 --> 00:11:45.379 But they really rejected Jerusalem. 00:11:46.019 --> 00:11:48.659 They rejected the place that God had really set up for worship. 00:11:48.919 --> 00:11:51.699 And instead, they built their own temple on Mount Gerizim. 00:11:51.860 --> 00:11:54.639 And claimed that that's where God should be worshipped. 00:11:55.139 --> 00:11:58.439 If you remember the woman at the well, she said that when she's having this conversation with Jesus. 00:11:58.579 --> 00:11:59.659 She said, why do we need to go to Jerusalem? 00:11:59.759 --> 00:12:00.860 We have our own mountain here. 00:12:00.860 --> 00:12:03.460 And Jesus was speaking to her there. 00:12:04.259 --> 00:12:10.820 But really, because of all of that situation, because of their intermarrying and their religious views, 00:12:11.379 --> 00:12:16.659 by the time of Christ, there was deep hostility between the Jews and the Samaritans. 00:12:17.419 --> 00:12:21.740 In fact, so much so that Samaria was kind of located in the middle of Israel. 00:12:21.740 --> 00:12:27.299 If you lived in the north side, you would go all the way around Samaria to the south side, 00:12:27.399 --> 00:12:29.259 just so you didn't have to see a Samaritan. 00:12:30.000 -->
