it's not all been good, but confident it's all being worked for good. 00:00:49.359 --> 00:00:54.340 This past week at the end of the week, which we do every year, your elders had a retreat together. present a miracle that Jesus performs. 00:02:14.780 --> 00:02:17.419 A sign that grabs attention. 00:02:18.379 --> 00:02:22.799 The characters in the story, they're paying attention now to Jesus. 00:02:23.079 --> 00:02:25.680 Or it creates some kind of conflict. 00:02:25.919 --> 00:02:27.719 And it's meant to do that for us as well. 00:02:29.000 --> 00:02:34.659 Second, he will record something of great importance that Jesus says. 00:02:34.659 --> 00:02:39.039 So we definitely want to pay attention to the sign itself. 00:02:39.039 --> 00:02:44.539 But we really want to be paying attention to what Jesus says following that sign. 00:02:45.539 --> 00:02:55.039 Last week we looked at the beginning of chapter 5 where Jesus recorded healing a man at the pool of Bethesda who had been lame for 38 years. 00:02:55.039 --> 00:02:59.419 It has to be assumed that many people would have known this man. 00:02:59.419 --> 00:03:02.159 That he could not walk. 00:03:02.359 --> 00:03:05.439 And that his newfound ability to walk. 00:03:05.500 --> 00:03:07.819 It just would have been attention grabbing. 00:03:08.079 --> 00:03:12.019 It would have been an astounding thing to see this man healed. 00:03:12.020 --> 00:03:17.740 It certainly got the attention of the Jewish religious leaders. 00:03:18.180 --> 00:03:23.460 Particularly because Jesus performed this miracle on the Sabbath. 00:03:23.700 --> 00:03:31.020 They had added all kinds of regulation to the Old Testament commandment to keep the Sabbath. 00:03:31.020 --> 00:03:38.300 And they were vigilant about pointing out when people weren't keeping the Sabbath. 00:03:38.500 --> 00:03:41.040 And so Jesus did not sin in healing this man. 00:03:41.120 --> 00:03:45.800 Nor did this man sin in taking up his mat in obedience to Jesus. 00:03:46.020 --> 00:03:49.100 But they thought that they had. 00:03:49.180 --> 00:03:51.660 And so they were looking to kill him. 00:03:52.200 --> 00:03:56.240 He was being disruptive to the religious order. 00:03:56.240 --> 00:04:00.620 If you notice verse 16 and following of chapter 5. 00:04:00.800 --> 00:04:01.100 It says, 00:04:01.100 --> 00:04:04.860 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus. 00:04:05.020 --> 00:04:08.100 Because he was doing these things. 00:04:08.760 --> 00:04:11.939 This healing on the Sabbath. 00:04:13.080 --> 00:04:15.120 But Jesus answered them, 00:04:15.719 --> 00:04:18.500 My Father is working until now. 00:04:18.720 --> 00:04:21.079 And I am working. 00:04:21.639 --> 00:04:25.420 It's an astounding statement that Christ makes of himself. 00:04:25.420 --> 00:04:26.259 Of his deity. 00:04:26.939 --> 00:04:27.759 And then it goes on. 00:04:27.879 --> 00:04:28.879 John says in verse 18. 00:04:28.980 --> 00:04:31.960 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him. 00:04:32.580 --> 00:04:34.500 Because not only was he breaking the Sabbath. 00:04:34.500 --> 00:04:38.580 But he was even calling God his own Father. 00:04:39.060 --> 00:04:42.560 Making himself equal with God. 00:04:44.120 --> 00:04:47.860 Blasphemy or profaning the name of God. 00:04:48.100 --> 00:04:52.300 Was and is a serious What do you do with what he says about himself? 00:05:53.240 --> 00:05:54.840 You really only have three options. 00:05:55.040 --> 00:05:56.800 The trilemma. 00:05:57.320 --> 00:05:59.980 You must pick one of the following. 00:06:00.720 --> 00:06:02.460 He was either a liar. 00:06:03.080 --> 00:06:05.300 The things that he said about himself just were untrue. 00:06:05.439 --> 00:06:07.040 And he knew exactly what he was doing. 00:06:07.280 --> 00:06:08.939 And spinning this yarn. 00:06:08.939 --> 00:06:13.339 Or he genuinely believed this about himself. 00:06:13.899 --> 00:06:15.100 But it's false. 00:06:15.360 --> 00:06:17.219 And so he's a lunatic. 00:06:18.800 --> 00:06:23.500 Or what he said about himself is true. 00:06:23.980 --> 00:06:27.519 And so it's right for us to worship do with that? 00:07:03.259 --> 00:07:05.639 These people either don't really believe this to be true. 00:07:06.379 --> 00:07:10.899 They're fabricating it because they want to bother us and get it Lewis wrote in Mere Christianity, 00:07:26.620 --> 00:07:33.099 I am trying here to prevent anyone from saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Jesus. 00:07:33.879 --> 00:07:36.799 I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, 00:07:36.979 --> 00:07:40.359 but I don't accept his claim to be God. 00:07:41.179 --> 00:07:43.339 That is the one thing we must not say. 00:07:44.120 --> 00:07:49.319 A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus would not be a great moral teacher. 00:07:50.219 --> 00:07:53.979 He would either be a lunatic on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg, 00:07:54.199 --> 00:07:56.459 or else he would be the devil of hell. 00:07:57.219 --> 00:07:58.139 A liar, right? 00:07:58.739 --> 00:08:00.299 You must make 00:08:55.539 The Jewish religious leaders had already decided what they believed about Jesus. 00:08:56.500 --> 00:08:59.699 In some places, it's recorded for us that they think he is insane.
