of God is unstoppable. 00:01:01.679 --> 00:01:07.319 In fact, the big issue in the book of Acts is the progress of the word of God. 00:01:08.759 --> 00:01:14.000 The risen Lord Jesus Christ commissions his apostles to be witnesses 00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:16.699 that will go out to the ends of the earth. 00:01:17.739 --> 00:01:19.979 The Holy Spirit is poured out from heaven. 00:01:20.179 --> 00:01:21.219 The church grows. 00:01:21.219 --> 00:01:24.719 And Jesus continues to work from heaven. 00:01:26.560 --> 00:01:30.239 And the way that the book of Acts speaks about it is quite interesting. 00:01:30.400 --> 00:01:33.319 It talks about that the word of God grows. 00:01:33.939 --> 00:01:35.099 It's a strange phrase, isn't it? 00:01:35.219 --> 00:01:36.959 The word of God grows. 00:01:37.180 --> 00:01:39.079 The word of God multiplies. 00:01:39.200 --> 00:01:40.680 The word of God increases. 00:01:40.960 --> 00:01:42.079 Let me just show you this. 00:01:42.900 --> Coercion and pressure. 00:04:05.139 --> 00:04:06.180 Against Christians. 00:04:07.780 --> 00:04:09.900 And the devil's mission remains the same. 00:04:09.979 --> 00:04:10.680 It hasn't changed. 00:04:10.680 --> 00:04:17.000 He will do whatever he can to silence the ministry of the word of God. 00:04:18.300 --> 00:04:20.959 He wants to stop the spread of the word. 00:04:21.980 --> 00:04:24.579 He wants to stop the spread of salvation. 00:04:25.060 --> 00:04:30.280 And so he continues to work ceaselessly to stop the spread of the word of God. 00:04:32.480 --> 00:04:37.439 Everything up to this point in Acts has been just lovely. 00:04:37.439 --> 00:04:40.779 Jesus has gone to heaven hasn't he? 00:04:41.759 --> 00:04:48.459 He's given his disciples this brilliant purpose of bringing, of being a blessing to the ends of the earth. 00:04:48.860 --> 00:04:51.399 And they're to take his name to the ends of the earth. 00:04:51.639 --> 00:04:55.240 And he's poured out his Holy Spirit upon them so that they would do it. 00:04:55.500 --> 00:05:02.439 And he's created a community that's marked by radical generosity and love and generous hospitality. 00:05:02.439 --> 00:05:05.480 And true community. 00:05:07.759 --> 00:05:12.959 And the apostles go out and they speak about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 00:05:13.579 --> 00:05:16.560 And people believe it's the most brilliant thing that's ever happened. 00:05:17.300 --> 00:05:19.519 People start coming to faith in him. 00:05:19.519 --> 00:05:25.879 In chapter 3 there's a lame man who's been lame from birth for 40 years. 00:05:26.359 --> 00:05:28.939 And with the authority of Jesus Christ he is healed. 00:05:30.680 --> 00:05:36.219 And you come to the end of chapter 3 and this guy who was lame for 40 years is standing there. 00:05:36.779 --> 00:05:41.019 And Peter and John are preaching about the Lord Jesus and all the blessings of God. 00:05:41.439 --> 00:05:44.279 And then it's interrupted by chapter 4 verse 1 to 4. 00:05:44.279 --> 00:05:46.119 Look what it says. 00:05:46.119 --> 00:05:53.879 As they were speaking to the people, the priest, the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them. 00:05:54.719 --> 00:05:58.639 Greatly, greatly overjoyed at what was happening. 00:05:59.299 --> 00:06:02.559 Greatly thrilled that this man had been kind of restored to life. 00:06:02.679 --> 00:06:03.699 No, greatly annoyed. 00:06:05.339 --> 00:06:06.299 Greatly annoyed. 00:06:07.239 --> 00:06:12.000 Because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from came to about 5,000. 00:06:33.019 --> 00:06:35.720 And if you look at verse 12. 00:06:36.879 --> 00:06:37.759 It says there, doesn't it? 00:06:37.959 --> 00:06:40.399 And that salvation is found in no other name given among men. 00:06:40.399 --> 00:06:42.919 And the word in verse 12 is for men and women there. 00:06:43.779 --> 00:06:49.159 But the word in verse 4 is actually just the word for men. 00:06:51.259 --> 00:06:53.239 So let's say they had 2.5 children. 00:06:54.819 --> 00:06:56.279 A husband and a wife, 2.5 kids. 00:06:56.359 --> 00:06:57.399 You can multiply it, isn't it? 00:06:57.500 --> 00:06:59.419 Look at verse 4. 00:06:59.639 --> 00:07:02.019 There's about 20, 20, 22 and a half thousand people. 00:07:02.019 --> 00:07:17.919 And the fact that we're told that it was the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees that have got an issue tells us that this is a problem of power and authority. 00:07:17.920 --> 00:07:22.040 And so it's no accident that they came upon the apostles. 00:07:22.360 --> 00:07:26.319 It's not as if they were wandering around and suddenly they found these people preaching. 00:07:26.740 --> 00:07:28.980 No, this is carefully devised. 00:07:29.439 --> 00:07:30.800 They've met their legal team. 00:07:31.660 --> 00:07:35.480 They're going to use as much legal force as they can do to get away with it. 00:07:35.480 --> 00:07:39.319 They hide their use of the law. 00:07:39.420 --> 00:07:41.800 But really what they want to do is silence people. 00:07:42.780 --> 00:07:46.720 They want to stop the spread of the name of Jesus. 00:07:47.640 --> 00:07:54.000 They want to extinguish the fire of the Spirit before this movement of the Spirit gets out of hand. 00:07:55.640 --> 00:08:00.340 And of course it's an abuse of the office of priest, isn't it? 00:08:00.339 --> 00:08:11.179 It infuriated these religious people that Peter and John, untrained people, were preaching the bodily resurrection of Jesus. 00:08:12.919 --> 00:08:18.099 And the thing about the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, that Jesus has risen from the dead, is this. 00:08:18.339 --> 00:08:19.799 It's that you can't control it. 00:08:21.719 --> 00:08:28.539 I don't know if you've noticed about Christianity, but when you talk about and believe in the resurrection, 00:08:28.540 --> 00:08:32.340 it automatically puts you into a power struggle. 00:08:35.519 --> 00:08:42.879 Either Jesus really is Lord, or you're going to deny that and hold on to the fact that you are Lord. 00:08:44.340 --> 00:08:47.320 The resurrection is all about power and control. 00:08:47.460 --> 00:08:52.019 Power and control in my life, and power and control in religious institutions, like you see here. 00:08:54.120 --> 00:08:57.100 And it was even worse for this group of people called the Sadducees, 00:08:57.100 --> 00:09:00.680 because the Sadducees did not believe in any kind of resurrection. 00:09:02.620 --> 00:09:09.420 So the preaching of Jesus Christ is risen from the dead, and he reigns, and he is Lord, 00:09:09.519 --> 00:09:11.920 and he's calling people from all over the world to him. 00:09:12.159 --> 00:09:14.180 It infuriated these religious people. 00:09:17.779 --> 00:09:18.960 It enraged them. 00:09:18.960 --> 00:09:24.160 If you were going to try and market the gospel to the Sadducees in Jerusalem, 00:09:24.759 --> 00:09:27.920 it is a very stupid thing to talk about the resurrection. 00:09:29.740 --> 00:09:35.980 Surely, Peter and John, with these religious people, you'd want to play down that element, wouldn't you? 00:09:37.620 --> 00:09:41.400 Peter and John, they need, don't they, some media training, savvy media training. 00:09:41.700 --> 00:09:42.500 They don't get it. 00:09:42.500 --> 00:09:48.679 So they preach this message that Jesus is Lord, they're thrown into prison. 00:09:50.899 --> 00:09:58.019 This is less than two months since this same group of authorities have managed to have Jesus executed. 00:10:00.059 --> 00:10:04.460 And I guess they think to themselves that crushing this movement won't take much trouble. 00:10:04.460 --> 00:10:07.639 They put these two guys in prison overnight. 00:10:10.519 --> 00:10:13.660 And I tell you this, this is written for our encouragement. 00:10:16.200 --> 00:10:21.500 If you are going to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, and if you're going to walk in step with his Holy Spirit, 00:10:21.920 --> 00:10:27.240 and you're going to seek to spread the word, you will have a negative reaction. 00:10:27.240 --> 00:10:37.580 It doesn't matter how gracious you will be, how sensitive to your audience, how intelligent, how loving you are, 00:10:37.960 --> 00:10:40.740 you will have a negative reaction. 00:10:44.759 --> 00:10:52.440 The lovely thing in this passage is that this tactic that Satan uses of persecution and coercion and intimidation 00:10:52.440 --> 00:10:55.779 and pressure backfires, doesn't it? 00:10:57.240 --> 00:11:00.500 And so there are the apostles stewing away in prison. 00:11:01.779 --> 00:11:04.560 And lo and behold, they become bold. 00:11:06.460 --> 00:11:11.419 The very people that this is supposed to intimidate, it makes them bolder. 00:11:12.220 --> 00:11:14.659 And the word spreads and the word grows. 00:11:16.259 --> 00:11:18.759 You find this throughout the Bible. 00:11:18.759 --> 00:11:27.879 The authorities, both religious and secular, lock up Christians, and the Christians keep talking about the gospel. 00:11:28.399 --> 00:11:30.179 And the word spreads. 00:11:31.639 --> 00:11:33.899 So here in chapter 4 of Acts, you've got conflict. 00:11:35.120 --> 00:11:41.379 And the conflict is basically between human authority and the authority of God. 00:11:41.379 --> 00:11:45.539 I've divided the chapter into two. 00:11:45.639 --> 00:11:47.860 You've got the long court scene from verses 5 to 12. 00:11:48.460 --> 00:11:50.799 And I've called that the failure of human power. 00:11:52.759 --> 00:11:57.919 And so what you have here is the priests and the Sadducees and the Sanhedrin council. 00:11:59.519 --> 00:12:02.080 Motivated by their own power and by their own position. 00:12:02.080 --> 00:12:08.360 And then you have Peter and John motivated by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 00:12:09.940 --> 00:12:14.379 And as I said to you earlier, these two things will always come into conflict. 00:12:14.379 --> 00:12:20.139 As we go through this, it is good to examine ourselves. 00:12:20.259 --> 00:12:21.559 What are we motivated? 00:12:21.919 --> 00:12:26.980 Am I motivated by as it begins in verses 5, 6, and 7, it sends a shiver down our spine. 00:12:39.519 --> 00:12:46.679 Peter and John are brought up, aren't they, by the very men who executed Jesus. 00:12:48.379 --> grandson. 00:13:05.480 --> 00:13:10.620 Every high priest until the fall of Jerusalem in AD 66 was part of this family. 00:13:10.759 --> 00:13:11.300 They're the mob. 00:13:12.860 --> 00:13:15.039 And --> 00:13:33.139 They see this, don't they, as a matter of jurisdiction. 00:13:33.139 --> 00:13:38.399 What the apostles are doing and what they're preaching, it threatens their structures. 00:13:40.379 --> 00:13:42.740 And their concern is not whether the miracle actually happened. 00:13:43.419 --> 00:13:44.439 They don't deny that. 00:13:45.559 --> 00:13:49.879 Their concern is not whether the resurrection of the Lord Jesus actually took place. 00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:51.399 Their concern is not with the truth at all. 00:13:51.679 --> 00:13:54.620 Their concern is, have you got remember? 00:14:23.220 --> 00:14:24.399 And he denies the Lord Jesus. 00:14:24.399 --> 00:14:29.899 And now he stands in front of the most powerful assembly in all of Israel. 00:14:29.939 --> 00:14:30.639 And what does he do? 00:14:32.799 --> 00:14:34.620 We don't know whether his knees were knocking. 00:14:35.899 --> 00:14:40.039 But we do know, don't we, he is respectful and he's forthright and he's truthful. 00:14:40.500 --> 00:14:42.579 Even though he's being treated as a common criminal. 00:14:43.819 --> 00:14:47.159 And he takes the opportunity to speak the word of God. 00:14:47.159 --> 00:14:52.719 And I hope you notice, it only takes him one sentence to get to Jesus. 00:14:55.480 --> 00:14:59.620 He says to them, if you're interested in how this miracle took place, the answer is Jesus. 00:15:00.659 --> 00:15:02.620 And then when he gets to Jesus, he preaches the gospel. 00:15:02.719 --> 00:15:03.779 Look at verse 10 with me. 00:15:03.779 --> 00:15:20.839 Let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by this man, the sky is standing before you raised him. 00:16:04.659 --> 00:16:15.419 And the resurrection not only shows that Jesus is alive and is able to do miracles, but the resurrection shows you that Jesus is God's anointed Messiah. don't think that's a very helpful way to defend yourself against the Sanhedrin who didn't even believe in the resurrection. 00:16:31.899 --> 00:16:33.860 Jesus is not apologizing. 00:16:35.460 --> 00:16:37.899 Peter is not apologizing for Jesus' resurrection. 00:16:37.899 --> 00:16:43.679 He's in trouble for preaching it, and then he preaches it again. 00:16:46.079 --> 00:16:50.720 And the reason he does that is because even though he knows that the council hate the gospel, 00:16:51.720 --> 00:16:55.720 they are not going to come to believe the gospel 00:16:55.720 --> 00:17:01.019 until God opens their eyes and opens their ears to it. 00:17:01.019 --> 00:17:07.819 And the way that God does that is through the preaching of the gospel. 00:17:08.180 --> 00:17:13.960 That as people hear the news of this king Jesus, their eyes and ears are opened. 00:17:15.400 --> 00:17:16.619 So he makes two applications. 00:17:16.779 --> 00:17:17.639 The first is in verse 11. 00:17:17.799 --> 00:17:20.319 He says, you are the builders of the religion in Israel. 00:17:20.319 --> 00:17:26.359 But if you leave Jesus Christ out of it, everything that you are building is going to crumble. 00:17:29.159 --> 00:17:34.299 He says to them, you might build a very fine edifice of religion with all sorts of things in it, 00:17:34.379 --> 00:17:38.179 but unless Jesus Christ is at the center and the heart and the key, 00:17:38.619 --> 00:17:42.399 God will not be a part of it, and you will not be transformed by it. 00:17:45.639 --> 00:17:48.859 Without the Lord Jesus, everything you're
