a little bit strange to our American ears, right? 00:03:23.840 --> 00:03:26.219 Because we don't live in a monarchy. 00:03:26.420 --> 00:03:29.120 So we don't sing God save the king. 00:03:29.640 --> 00:03:33.259 But as we step into the world of Psalm chapter 20 here this morning, 00:03:33.620 --> 00:03:36.780 we have to remember that Israel was a monarchy. 00:03:37.520 --> 00:03:41.020 And that sort of prayer would be very familiar to the people of Israel. 00:03:42.099 --> 00:03:47.080 Psalm chapter 20 is a similar sort of song to God save the king. 00:03:47.080 --> 00:03:48.660 This is a song. 00:03:48.840 --> 00:03:56.180 It's a prayer of David being led, leading the people of God to pray for the anointed king of Israel. 00:03:56.400 --> 00:04:05.380 And it seems like this prayer was sort of a prayer of blessing to be sung or to be prayed by the people of God together for the king, 00:04:05.500 --> 00:04:10.320 particularly as the king would go out and lead his people in battle. 00:04:11.180 --> 00:04:13.939 And they would sing, God save the king. 00:04:13.939 --> 00:04:18.980 And if you ever wonder, well, why do the Britons sing like this? 00:04:19.060 --> 00:04:21.160 Why does David and Israel sing like this? 00:04:21.339 --> 00:04:21.879 Here's why. 00:04:21.959 --> 00:04:23.699 This is the big idea for us this morning. 00:04:24.899 --> 00:04:29.040 As goes the king, verse 1. 00:05:26.980 --> 00:05:31.460 David, he leads the people in praying this benediction over the king. 00:05:31.560 --> 00:05:33.440 And that's all a benediction is, by the way. 00:05:33.439 --> 00:05:37.439 Now, we do this at the end of every service, at the end of the service this morning. 00:05:37.560 --> 00:05:44.319 Lord willing, I will stand here and I will raise my hand to show that this blessing comes from the Lord and not from me. 00:05:44.639 --> 00:05:48.199 I will open up to a prayer or a blessing from God's word. 00:05:48.379 --> 00:05:51.180 And I will read that would look up. 00:05:55.920 --> 00:06:01.000 And they would have their hands open symbolically to receive that moment of blessing. 00:06:01.620 --> 00:06:02.580 Now, that's at the same time. 00:06:02.660 --> 00:06:05.879 It's a prayer to God asking him to do what we read. 00:06:06.080 --> 00:06:09.300 And it's a blessing spoken over you. 00:06:09.400 --> 00:06:13.460 And that's exactly what David is leading the people here to do in Psalm 20. 00:06:13.600 --> 00:06:19.340 David, the king, is leading the people and speaking this blessing over the king. 00:06:20.100 --> 00:06:21.160 You might remember from a couple of weeks ago in Psalm 18. 00:06:41.400 --> 00:06:44.420 He experienced the Lord's deliverance from his troubles. 00:06:44.420 --> 00:06:51.460 And so now he prays that God, the God of Jacob, the God who's shown up time and time again in Israel's history, 00:06:51.840 --> 00:06:55.520 would do so again and continue to protect the king. 00:06:55.640 --> 00:06:56.680 May God answer you. 00:06:56.800 --> 00:06:58.379 May God protect you. 00:06:59.340 --> 00:07:02.280 He prays for God's help, God's support. 00:07:02.400 --> 00:07:05.460 Verse 2, may he send you help 00:07:15.000 David prayed, in my distress, I cried out to the Lord. 00:07:15.100 --> 00:07:19.139 And the Lord, from his temple, heard my voice. 00:07:19.980 --> 00:07:21.600 So now David, he prays for more. 00:07:21.720 --> 00:07:23.259 May God help the king. 00:07:23.819 --> 00:07:26.139 May he listen from his holy temple. 00:07:26.279 --> 00:07:28.680 May he give support from his holy hill. 00:07:29.660 --> 00:07:32.459 He prays that God would approve of the king's sacrifices. 00:07:32.620 --> 00:07:34.939 In verse 3, may he remember all your offerings. 00:07:35.139 --> 00:07:37.899 May he regard with favor your burnt sacrifices. 00:07:37.899 --> 00:07:42.699 He prays that God would receive the offering and the worship of the king. 00:07:42.819 --> 00:07:47.279 And this, again, would usually be done before Israel went out to battle. 00:07:47.979 --> 00:07:53.759 They would offer sacrifice to the Lord and seek his favor, seek his support, before they went off to war. 00:07:53.899 --> 00:08:01.839 And so David here, he prays that God would accept the worship and the offerings of the king as representative of God's people. 00:08:01.839 --> 00:08:08.439 And not only that, verse 4, he prays for God to fulfill all the king's plans. 00:08:09.739 --> 00:08:14.879 May he grant you your heart's desire and fulfill all your plans. 00:08:15.000 --> 00:08:18.339 In verse 5, he prays, may the Lord fulfill all your petitions. 00:08:18.500 --> 00:08:24.500 So, in other words, whatever it is you pray for, whatever it is you seek the Lord for, whatever it is you desire, 00:08:24.659 --> 00:08:28.079 whatever it is that you plan, may God answer you. 00:08:28.079 --> 00:08:36.559 And this would require, of course, that the king's heart and the king's plans align with God's heart and God's plans. 00:08:37.460 --> 00:08:41.840 We know from the book of Proverbs, chapter 16, verse 3, it says, 00:08:42.059 --> 00:08:46.340 Commit your work to the Lord and your plans will be established. 00:08:47.340 --> 00:08:48.779 Psalm 37, verse 4, 00:08:48.879 --> 00:08:53.759 Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. 00:08:53.759 --> 00:09:00.819 And so the king is praying here, give the king a heart that seeks you and then give him what he seeks. 00:09:01.740 --> 00:09:06.879 Align his plans with your plans and then fulfill all his plans. 00:09:07.819 --> 00:09:10.379 This is a wonderful prayer of blessing for the king. 00:09:10.519 --> 00:09:14.620 But think again, why would he pray like this for the king? 00:09:14.620 --> 00:09:20.840 Why would he invite the people of God to join together in prayer like this for the king? 00:09:20.940 --> 00:09:27.980 Well, he prays these blessings for the king because, again, he knows if the Lord decides to bless the king in this way, 00:09:28.519 --> 00:09:31.820 if the Lord decides to answer these prayers and to grant these requests, 00:09:32.139 --> 00:09:37.139 it not only blesses the king, it blesses all of the people. 00:09:37.139 --> 00:09:45.919 Just imagine what a gift that would be for the people to have a leader who was protected by God. 00:09:46.659 --> 00:09:49.139 A leader who depended on God's help. 00:09:49.899 --> 00:09:53.580 A leader whose worship was accepted by the Lord. 00:09:54.220 --> 00:09:57.000 A leader who prayed often and his petitions were granted. 00:09:57.139 --> 00:10:01.980 A leader whose heart was set on honoring and giving glory to the Lord. 00:10:02.039 --> 00:10:05.100 It would be a blessing to those who were it, it's amazing, isn't it? 00:10:49.159 --> 00:10:56.979 That our prayers, as the people of God, can impact and can shape the course of history. 00:10:58.239 --> 00:10:59.919 Our prayers, David believes this. 00:10:59.919 --> 00:11:01.759 This is why he's inviting God's people to pray. 00:11:02.199 --> 00:11:07.819 Our prayers really can call down the blessing of God into one another's structures of authority in all of our everyday life. 00:12:32.480 --> 00:12:42.659 This prayer, Psalm 20, is a wonderful model for us of how we might pray for those who are in authority over us.
