glad you're here, and we're glad you're here not because you're filling a seat, 00:00:22.600 --> 00:00:29.039 but because we are following Jesus, and we're convinced that there is no one so good that they don't need God's grace, 00:00:29.039 --> 00:00:31.800 and no one so bad that they can't have it. 00:00:32.479 --> 00:00:36.439 And so God is going to have something to say to everyone in his word, 00:00:36.960 --> 00:00:40.179 and everyone needs to hear what God has to say. 00:00:41.039 --> 00:00:45.079 If you've been with us over the last month or so, you know that we are in the book of Philippians, 00:00:45.359 --> 00:00:46.859 and Philippians is a letter. 00:00:47.460 --> 00:00:51.039 It's a letter that's written to a church, and that church is very similar to our church. 00:00:51.980 --> 00:00:56.120 And that church is in a city, the city of Philippi, that's very similar to our city. 00:00:56.119 --> 00:01:00.000 Remember, Philippi is one of the only Roman colonies in Macedonia, 00:01:00.780 --> 00:01:06.899 and so the citizens there are a higher percentage military than you would expect in other cities. 00:01:06.979 --> 00:01:10.459 Some of them because they were already citizens because of their military service, 00:01:10.939 --> 00:01:14.439 and so they wanted to move to a Roman colony where the tax benefits would be greater. 00:01:14.920 --> 00:01:18.140 Some of them were already there because they came from military families, 00:01:18.259 --> 00:01:20.519 and Philippi has a great military heritage. 00:01:20.519 --> 00:01:26.379 And so this is a city that takes pride in its Roman citizenship. 00:01:27.420 --> 00:01:33.259 And that's going to become important this morning because the first thing that Paul is going to tell us in verse 27 is, 00:01:33.979 --> 00:01:36.879 only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ. 00:01:38.120 --> 00:01:42.079 And it's an unfortunate translation because literally what Paul is saying in the Greek is, 00:01:42.560 --> 00:01:45.239 act like a citizen of the gospel. 00:01:45.239 --> 00:01:51.000 And so he's writing to people who are proud of their earthly citizenship, 00:01:51.699 --> 00:01:52.799 their Roman citizenship, 00:01:53.379 --> 00:01:59.239 living in a city where they would have felt pressure to act as a Roman citizen, 00:01:59.399 --> 00:02:02.679 to adopt the values of Roman culture and Roman society. 00:02:03.479 --> 00:02:06.819 And he tells them instead to adopt the values of the gospel. 00:02:06.819 --> 00:02:12.500 And so these are believers, members of the church who feel under pressure. 00:02:13.539 --> 00:02:18.519 Much like us, they live in a culture that values greed, 00:02:18.959 --> 00:02:21.039 and yet they're called to generosity. 00:02:22.579 --> 00:02:25.120 They live in a culture of sexual anarchy, 00:02:25.919 --> 00:02:28.000 and yet they're called to sexual integrity. 00:02:29.139 --> 00:02:34.159 They live in a culture that doesn't care for the poor, 00:02:34.159 --> 00:02:36.620 and yet they're called to do that. 00:02:37.699 --> 00:02:41.620 And even more than that, we're going to find out that they have opponents in verse 28, 00:02:41.740 --> 00:02:44.159 that there are people who are actually pressing in on them. 00:02:45.359 --> 00:02:48.300 And so as I've mentioned before, this is a book about partnership in the gospel, 00:02:48.500 --> 00:02:50.759 and the question that we're going to see today is, 00:02:50.879 --> 00:02:54.579 how do we have our partnership in the gospel when opposition comes? 00:02:55.500 --> 00:02:58.099 When we feel the pull of dual citizenship? 00:02:58.099 --> 00:03:04.659 When the culture that we find ourselves in asks very different things of us 00:03:04.659 --> 00:03:06.740 than the culture that God has, 00:03:07.620 --> 00:03:10.099 the demands that God makes on us. 00:03:10.879 --> 00:03:14.500 That's the tension that the believers in the city of Philippi face. 00:03:15.120 --> 00:03:16.959 It's the tension that we face as well, 00:03:17.280 --> 00:03:19.859 and it's what Paul is going to speak to in this passage. 00:03:19.979 --> 00:03:20.759 So we're in Philippians. 00:03:20.819 --> 00:03:21.799 We're still in chapter 1. 00:03:21.879 --> 00:03:23.099 We're starting at verse 27. 00:03:23.099 --> 00:03:25.639 Remember that this is God's word, 00:03:26.239 --> 00:03:29.780 and God tells us that his word is more precious than gold, 00:03:30.359 --> 00:03:32.000 even the finest gold. 00:03:33.060 --> 00:03:34.579 And it is sweeter than honey, 00:03:35.419 --> 00:03:38.280 even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb. 00:03:39.280 --> 00:03:41.219 So turn with me now to verse 27. 00:03:41.879 --> 00:03:45.699 Only let your manner of life be worthy of opposition? 00:05:39.900 --> 00:05:40.980 Paul doesn't waste any time. 00:05:41.079 --> 00:05:42.060 He cuts right to the point 00:05:42.060 --> 00:05:44.340 in verses 27 and 28. 00:05:45.079 --> 00:05:45.960 He wants them to live 00:05:45.960 --> 00:05:47.220 as these citizens of the gospel, 00:05:47.360 --> 00:05:49.040 and he tells us exactly what that means. 00:05:49.120 --> 00:05:50.819 It means that they would be 00:05:50.819 --> 00:05:52.000 striving together, 00:05:52.840 --> 00:05:54.460 striving one mind side by side 00:05:54.460 --> 00:05:55.540 for the faith of the gospel 00:05:55.540 --> 00:05:56.960 and not frightened in anything 00:05:56.960 --> 00:05:58.220 by your opponents. 00:05:59.879 --> 00:06:01.620 And the point Paul is making is simply this, 00:06:01.639 --> 00:06:03.240 and this is a dynamic that you'll see 00:06:03.240 --> 00:06:05.120 if you've been in church for a while, 00:06:05.660 --> 00:06:06.900 if you've studied church history, 00:06:06.899 --> 00:06:09.479 there are two options for any church. 00:06:10.679 --> 00:06:11.379 And they're this. 00:06:11.439 --> 00:06:12.679 We are either going out 00:06:12.679 --> 00:06:15.419 in a mission with each other, 00:06:15.500 --> 00:06:18.299 or we are going on a mission 00:06:18.299 --> 00:06:19.620 against each other. 00:06:21.439 --> 00:06:24.019 We are either going out in mission 00:06:24.019 --> 00:06:24.739 with each other, 00:06:24.739 --> 00:06:26.319 or we are going on a mission 00:06:26.319 --> 00:06:27.560 against each other. 00:06:29.339 --> 00:06:30.579 Paul's writing to a church here 00:06:30.579 --> 00:06:31.839 that's struggling with unity. 00:06:32.419 --> 00:06:33.739 They're struggling to get along. 00:06:34.500 --> 00:06:35.199 And he's telling them, 00:06:35.280 --> 00:06:37.120 as you feel pressure from the outside, 00:06:37.579 --> 00:06:39.120 there's only one way 00:06:39.120 --> 00:06:40.600 you're going to survive. 00:06:41.639 --> right and most excellent. 00:06:53.300 --> 00:06:54.240 That they would know 00:06:54.240 --> 00:06:55.579 what are the important things 00:06:55.579 --> 00:06:56.400 to focus on. 00:06:57.199 --> 00:06:58.360 What are the gospel issues 00:06:58.360 --> 00:06:59.240 that they can focus on? 00:06:59.300 --> 00:07:00.319 Remember that with partnership 00:07:00.319 --> 00:07:00.939 in the gospel, 00:07:00.939 --> 00:07:02.060 the gospel is the focus 00:07:02.060 --> 00:07:03.019 of Jesus' death 00:07:03.019 --> 00:07:04.300 and his resurrection. 00:07:05.879 --> 00:07:07.379 And so the church needs to know 00:07:07.379 --> 00:07:09.240 how to keep the primary things primary 00:07:09.240 --> 00:07:11.680 and the secondary things secondary. 00:07:12.540 --> 00:07:13.879 And so the first truth is that 00:07:13.879 --> 00:07:15.699 we have one of these two options. 00:07:15.920 --> 00:07:17.399 We're either working with each other 00:07:17.399 --> 00:07:18.240 or against each other. It's not written by Christians 00:09:26.180 --> 00:09:26.940 or for Christians. 00:09:26.940 --> 00:09:28.500 It's a European magazine. 00:09:29.200 --> 00:09:30.240 And they wrote an article
