overarching thing that I want us to do this morning is I want us to do what the Bible says here, what this passage says. 00:02:51.180 --> 00:02:53.580 I want us to consider Jesus. 00:02:54.240 --> 00:03:09.239 Consider Jesus. 00:03:09.359 --> 00:03:15.899 This sounds like something that we would advise someone who maybe doesn't have a relationship with Jesus to do, right? 00:03:16.259 --> 00:03:20.539 Maybe someone who is questioning their faith, who's going through a difficult time. 00:03:20.539 --> 00:03:24.359 And we may come to him and we say, hey, we want you to consider Jesus. 00:03:24.799 --> 00:03:28.139 And that would be great advice for us to give to someone. 00:03:28.459 --> 00:03:29.859 That would be an incredible thing. 00:03:30.199 --> 00:03:34.759 But this passage isn't written to unbelievers. 00:03:35.359 --> 00:03:37.319 This passage is written to believers. 00:03:37.539 --> 00:03:38.599 It's written to the church. 00:03:38.739 --> 00:03:43.000 It says, therefore, holy brothers who share in a heavenly calling. 00:03:43.539 --> 00:03:48.539 This passage is telling us as believers to consider Jesus. 00:03:48.539 --> 00:03:54.039 The author is telling Christians, holy brothers, consider Jesus. 00:03:54.840 --> 00:04:00.439 The word here, consider, it means something like understand or to observe well. 00:04:01.039 --> 00:04:08.680 I love how the International Center Version, the ISV says, it says, keep your focus on Jesus. 00:04:09.479 --> 00:04:17.100 As we consider Jesus, we must keep our focus and consider him in all that we say and do. 00:04:17.100 --> 00:04:31.400 And his invitation to take notice of Jesus lets us know, as well as the original audience that it was written to, lets us all know that he's about to say something significant here. 00:04:31.660 --> 00:04:38.520 There's going to be something of special significance that he is telling us to consider about Jesus. 00:04:38.519 --> 00:04:47.099 And so the first thing that I want us to see to consider Jesus is we must consider him as an apostle. 00:04:47.759 --> 00:04:56.139 It says, therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle. 00:04:56.779 --> 00:05:02.939 It's interesting that this is the only time in scripture that it refers to Jesus as an apostle. 00:05:02.939 --> 00:05:11.079 The title apostle denotes that it is one sent by God as his representative. 00:05:12.019 --> 00:05:25.019 And so when it is applied to the disciples, it is Jesus sending these disciples going out as apostles, as his representatives to carry this message with them. 00:05:25.019 --> 00:05:33.079 But now we're seeing that Jesus is sent by God with a message to proclaim. 00:05:33.699 --> 00:05:44.180 And it's clear that Jesus was sent by God not only to proclaim the forgiveness of sins, but also to make a way for forgiveness of sins to be possible. 00:05:45.039 --> 00:05:49.259 Listen to the most well-known verse in all of scripture probably, John 3, 16. 00:05:49.259 --> 00:05:59.379 It says, for God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 00:05:59.899 --> 00:06:01.839 And a lot of times that's where we stop. 00:06:02.219 --> 00:06:04.699 But listen to that very next verse, verse 17. 00:06:04.920 --> 00:06:14.719 It says this, for God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 00:06:14.720 --> 00:06:21.220 And so God is sending us Jesus to proclaim this good news of the gospel. 00:06:21.540 --> 00:06:32.320 But what it also tells us is not only to consider him as the apostle who's bringing this message, but it also tells us to consider him as high priest. 00:06:32.900 --> 00:06:39.100 And so we're to consider him as the apostle and high priest of our confession. 00:06:39.100 --> 00:06:45.400 Now this is going to be a theme that we hit on many times as we go through the book of Hebrews. 00:06:45.620 --> 00:06:49.660 And we're going to hit on it in much more depth later on in some other places. 00:06:50.040 --> 00:06:54.320 But I do want us to consider the weight of this for just a moment. 00:06:54.980 --> 00:07:02.320 The confession of what Jesus is apostle and high priest is called here, it's called our confession. 00:07:02.319 --> 00:07:08.899 He says here, consider Jesus the apostle and high priest of our confession. 00:07:09.500 --> 00:07:18.360 The author is not referring to so much the act of confessing, but to the content of what is being confessed. 00:07:19.180 --> 00:07:23.579 To what we are actually saying about who Jesus is. 00:07:23.839 --> 00:07:30.579 That he's the one who brings this message, but he's also the one who makes this message possible. 00:07:30.579 --> 00:07:38.120 We are confessing that Jesus is both an apostle sent by God to bring good news. 00:07:38.620 --> 00:07:46.500 And at the same time confessing that Jesus is our great high priest making atonement for our sins. 00:07:47.259 --> 00:07:53.319 The high priest in the Old Testament were constantly making sacrifices for the people. 00:07:54.019 --> 00:07:56.620 They were constantly making sacrifices for the people's sins. 00:07:56.719 --> 00:07:59.039 It was a work that was never complete. 00:07:59.040 --> 00:08:05.480 In Christ as our great and final high priest, his work is done. 00:08:06.020 --> 00:08:10.400 So you remember what Jesus, one of the last things that Jesus said on the cross was. 00:08:11.460 --> 00:08:13.939 It is, okay, your father forgave him for that, yes. 00:08:14.200 --> 00:08:16.320 But he also said it is finished. 00:08:16.720 --> 00:08:17.700 It's done. 00:08:18.120 --> 00:08:19.439 It's paid for. 00:08:19.879 --> 00:08:23.980 Meaning that what he accomplished on the cross was perfect. 00:08:24.080 --> 00:08:24.680 It was done. 00:08:24.900 --> 00:08:25.820 It was paid for. 00:08:25.900 --> 00:08:28.360 Those sins, that atonement was complete. 00:08:28.360 --> 00:08:32.340 This is the significance of the curtain being torn in two in the temple. 00:08:32.340 --> 00:08:43.840 There was no longer a barrier between us and God because Jesus made the final atonement, the final payment, the final sacrifice for our sins. 00:08:44.200 --> 00:08:49.379 Each and every one of us are sinners and we need somebody to make that sacrifice for us. 00:08:49.379 --> 00:08:55.419 And Jesus, as our great and final high priest, did that for us. 00:08:55.419 --> 00:09:06.259 And so Jesus, as the apostle and high priest, he brings the good news and he makes the good news possible for us to hear today. 00:09:06.259 --> 00:09:12.259 But this leads us to the final way that I want us to consider Jesus. 00:09:12.259 --> 00:09:17.439 And the last way that I want you to consider Jesus today is this. 00:09:18.100 --> 00:09:21.960 Consider Jesus as the very best. 00:09:21.960 --> 00:09:25.180 Consider Jesus as the very best. 00:09:25.180 --> 00:09:33.240 The very best who brought us the greatest news, who made it possible by the greatest act of love the world has ever seen. 00:09:33.660 --> 00:09:37.420 Jesus is the very best. 00:09:38.200 --> 00:09:39.000 It says here, 00:09:39.000 --> 00:10:07.139 You see, this passage for us today isn't something that's difficult for us to wrap our minds around. 00:10:07.139 --> 00:10:11.039 It's not hard for us to see that Jesus is better than Moses. 00:10:11.299 --> 00:10:13.139 I think we can all agree with that, right? 00:10:13.480 --> 00:10:15.159 That Jesus is greater. 00:10:15.299 --> 00:10:16.480 He's better than Moses. 00:10:17.100 --> 00:10:20.819 And so that's not something that's difficult for us to wrap our minds around. 00:10:20.819 --> 00:10:24.279 But in the original audience, this was a significant statement. 00:10:24.740 --> 00:10:26.620 This was something that would have carried weight. let's, before you make a big statement like that, let's make sure we understand what we're saying. 00:10:36.600 --> 00:10:40.240 Because for the early Jews, Moses was simply the greatest. 00:10:40.399 --> 00:10:45.480 He was second only to Adam, to unfallen Adam in intimacy with God. 00:10:46.000 --> 00:10:49.360 They saw, many of them saw him as greater than the angels. 00:10:49.480 --> 00:10:53.560 And we've already talked about in this that the angels had carried a lot of weight. 00:10:53.800 --> 00:10:56.600 And it was significant to say that Jesus was greater than the angels. 00:10:56.720 --> 00:11:01.120 But now he's saying that Jesus is better than Moses. 00:11:01.120 --> 00:11:03.759 This would have gotten their attention. 00:11:04.539 --> 00:11:10.740 And not to use this lightly, but what the author is saying about Jesus was earth-shattering to them. 00:11:11.580 --> 00:11:15.580 It was something that all of a sudden, everybody comes in to pay attention.
