Jerusalem. 00:02:52.479 --> 00:02:55.299 The year is 445 B.C., 00:02:55.299 --> 00:02:58.479 90 years after the first group of Jews returned to the land of Judah 00:02:58.479 --> 00:02:59.759 after the exile to Babylon. 00:03:00.780 --> 00:03:03.000 At this point in history, the temple has been rebuilt. 00:03:03.479 --> 00:03:05.019 The word of God is being taught, 00:03:05.560 --> 00:03:09.459 but the city itself is still largely in ruins. 00:03:11.099 --> 00:03:13.120 And Nehemiah has just arrived in Jerusalem 00:03:13.120 --> 00:03:15.259 from the Persian imperial capital of Susa, 00:03:15.419 --> 00:03:17.479 and he's gathered together the people, 00:03:17.599 --> 00:03:19.000 and he's told them of his plan 00:03:19.000 --> 00:03:21.259 to restore the dignity of the city 00:03:21.259 --> 00:03:22.719 and rebuild its walls. 00:03:22.719 --> 00:03:29.759 Now, this was a huge task, a huge task. 00:03:30.680 --> 00:03:34.079 It was roughly 2,300 meters around the city. 00:03:35.740 --> 00:03:38.719 That's about the length of 250 football fields. 00:03:40.599 --> 00:03:42.680 How many football fields would you take up 00:03:42.680 --> 00:03:44.280 if this was the returned Jewish exiles 00:04:17.040 --> 00:04:20.100 be any match on the one hand 00:04:20.100 --> 00:04:21.939 for the magnitude of such a task? 00:04:23.399 --> 00:04:24.339 But not just that. You know, we might ask the same question of ourselves, 00:04:34.600 --> 00:04:35.379 the church, today. 00:04:37.480 --> 00:04:39.139 Of course, now that Christ has come 00:04:39.139 --> 00:04:41.060 and poured out his spirit at Pentecost, 00:04:41.180 --> 00:04:43.519 God's people are no longer a physical city 00:04:43.519 --> 00:04:45.659 amidst the nations of Palestine. 00:04:45.879 --> 00:04:47.819 Rather, we are a spiritual city 00:04:47.819 --> 00:04:49.939 amidst the nations of the whole world. 00:04:51.180 --> 00:04:53.339 We're not building physical walls anymore. 00:04:53.560 --> 00:04:55.079 We're building spiritual communities 00:04:55.079 --> 00:04:57.060 of faith and hope and love. 00:04:58.360 --> 00:05:00.459 And yet, the task before us 00:05:00.459 --> 00:05:01.860 to build the church, 00:05:02.300 --> 00:05:03.439 to advance God's kingdom, 00:05:03.620 --> 00:05:05.959 is equally daunting, if not more so. 00:05:05.959 --> 00:05:09.599 Just like in Nehemiah's day, 00:05:09.699 --> 00:05:11.759 there is much work to be done. 00:05:11.859 --> 00:05:13.560 The magnitude of the task is great. 00:05:13.659 --> 00:05:14.919 And just like in Nehemiah's day, 00:05:32.399 --> 00:05:34.039 terrible experiences with the church 00:05:34.039 --> 00:05:35.759 and frankly want nothing to do with Jesus. 00:05:35.959 --> 00:05:40.479 Statistics about addiction, poverty, 00:05:40.699 --> 00:05:41.799 mental health, abuse, 00:05:41.859 --> 00:05:43.039 are at staggering levels. 00:05:44.719 --> 00:05:46.299 Not just outside the church, 00:05:46.379 --> 00:05:47.439 but inside the church. 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:50.639 And rather than being communities 00:05:50.639 --> 00:05:52.199 of faith and hope and love, 00:05:52.279 --> 00:05:53.759 churches can often deteriorate 00:05:53.759 --> 00:05:55.060 into places of cynicism 00:05:55.060 --> 00:05:56.659 and bitterness and burnout. 00:05:58.959 --> 00:06:01.199 The task of building up the church 00:06:01.199 --> 00:06:02.759 and advancing God's kingdom 00:06:02.759 --> 00:06:03.659 is staggering. 00:06:03.660 --> 00:06:06.040 The magnitude of the task before us is great. 00:06:09.300 --> see the opposition 00:07:51.780 --> 00:07:52.860 to the task. 00:07:52.899 --> 00:07:53.399 It's easy 00:07:53.399 --> 00:07:54.620 to get discouraged 00:07:54.620 --> 00:07:55.519 and it's easy 00:07:55.519 --> 00:07:56.519 to grow afraid. 00:07:59.819 --> 00:08:01.840 But what Nehemiah chapters 3 and 4 00:08:01.840 --> 00:08:02.920 show us is hope. 00:08:05.060 --> 00:08:07.340 God has made
