And Moses 00:00:38.500 --> 00:00:43.320 and Elijah from the Old Testament were there. And they're on the mountain of transfiguration. 00:00:43.420 --> 00:00:48.439 That's how we know it, isn't it? But here today they go back down to the real world, as we 00:00:48.439 --> 00:00:57.740 often call it. And in the real world, you will know, as I know, you encounter the most 00:00:57.740 --> 00:01:03.859 dark and appalling despair. Not all the time, but some of the time. What you have here is 00:01:03.859 --> 00:01:12.740 the kind of awesome sense of a young life being ruined. The helplessness of the world contrasting 00:01:13.500 --> 00:01:22.200 with the glory and the fullness of the transfiguration scene. There's a deliberate contrast. You've 00:01:22.200 --> 00:01:30.659 got a helpless father and a helpless boy. A boy causing himself, apparently, considerable 00:01:30.659 --> 00:01:36.480 physical damage, as well as other kinds. And then you've got the helpless disciples, these 00:01:36.480 --> 00:01:42.659 followers of Jesus, that the father brings his son to, but they can't help him. He goes 00:01:42.659 --> 00:01:49.200 to the representatives of Jesus in the world, and they come to it. They can't fix it. And 00:01:49.200 --> 00:01:54.480 then he comes to Jesus, and you'll see, you see, he kneels down in anguish, and he says, 00:01:54.540 --> 00:01:58.100 I brought him to your disciples, but they could not help him either. They could not heal him. 00:02:00.359 --> 00:02:04.980 These worlds, the mountain of transfiguration, and the world we're looking at this moment, 00:02:05.060 --> 00:02:13.879 they are contemporary. There's a world where Jesus reigns in glory, and he shines in all the 00:02:13.879 --> 00:02:19.979 brightness of his divinity. And there's also the world that you and I live in. A world 00:02:19.979 --> 00:02:27.639 of darkness, and need, and pain, and anguish, and unfulfilled hopes, and helplessness. And 00:02:27.639 --> 00:02:31.519 that's what just is that I'm kind of out there in the world this morning. That's in here, 00:02:31.659 --> 00:02:38.180 in this building, in the Church of Jesus Christ. And this man found it so. 00:02:38.180 --> 00:02:48.960 And I think Matthew's account here of the ineffectiveness of the disciples is where he focuses. 00:02:51.140 --> 00:02:56.719 And we'll also see this unusual outburst where Jesus kind of opens his heart, and we get a 00:02:56.719 --> 00:03:03.300 glimpse into the heart of Jesus. And then the author of the Gospel presents to us Jesus leading 00:03:03.300 --> 00:03:08.480 his disciples, and his disciples, and his disciples understand what has made them join the helpless 00:03:08.480 --> 00:03:15.660 in relation to this young man. So these three significant elements all begin with G. 00:03:16.620 --> 00:03:21.640 First we see the devastation that's in the heart of the Father. That appears in verse 14. 00:03:23.160 --> 00:03:28.939 And then we'll see in the passage the distress that's in the heart of Jesus from verses 17 to 18. 00:03:28.939 --> 00:03:34.259 Jesus answers them, O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? 00:03:34.500 --> 00:03:37.379 How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me. 00:03:38.759 --> 00:03:43.819 There's an extraordinary outcry from the heart of Jesus. And then at the end of the passage 00:03:43.819 --> 00:03:48.919 he focuses on the diagnosis Jesus gives for the ineffectiveness of the disciples. 00:03:49.539 --> 00:03:55.039 Your disciples could not restore him. So let's look first of all at the devastation of the heart of the Father. 00:03:55.039 --> 00:04:03.060 I don't think there's another way of describing what's going on in this family, in this poor man's heart and spirit. 00:04:03.419 --> 00:04:11.759 He's devastated by the particular problems of his son. He's devastated by the damage being seen that's being done to him. 00:04:13.099 --> 00:04:18.079 He's distraught by a world that seems to be able to offer him and his son no help. 00:04:19.180 --> 00:04:25.019 I think he's devastated. He's particularly devastated when he takes them to people that he think will find 00:04:25.019 --> 00:04:28.659 be able to finally be able to make the difference. The representative of Jesus Christ. 00:04:29.979 --> 00:04:36.439 And they find there's very little difference between what the disciples offer him and what the world around him offers him. 00:04:37.519 --> 00:04:41.979 And the natures of the boy's problem are seizures. 00:04:41.980 --> 00:04:46.879 Literally, the word is moonstruck. 00:04:48.080 --> 00:04:53.120 The lad is suffering from fits or seizures that made him fall. 00:04:53.280 --> 00:04:59.319 And in verse 15 it tells us that he often fell into fire or water. 00:05:00.939 --> 00:05:07.980 Now I noticed that the version of the ESV, the Blackfish Bible, that is a translation of the original Greek. 00:05:07.980 --> 00:05:12.660 And in the word it says, it says that the boy suffered from epilepsy. 00:05:12.980 --> 00:05:15.439 That is a really bad translation. 00:05:17.060 --> 00:05:18.860 The word should be seizures. 00:05:19.040 --> 00:05:24.879 There's no justification for saying that this boy suffered from epilepsy. 00:05:25.280 --> 00:05:27.040 The symptoms might look the same. 00:05:27.040 --> 00:05:32.260 He has the phenomenon of seizures as part of his condition. 00:05:33.260 --> 00:05:38.040 But Jesus deals with the problem on a completely different level altogether. 00:05:39.800 --> 00:05:42.160 The boy is not mad. 00:05:43.280 --> 00:05:44.140 He's not a lunatic. 00:05:45.180 --> this. 00:06:10.639 --> 00:06:14.099 About a boy like this being possessed by the power of darkness. 00:06:15.319 --> 00:06:16.739 Indwelt by one of their representatives. 00:06:16.919 --> 00:06:19.319 I wonder what your explanation of evil is. 00:06:19.319 --> 00:06:22.719 Maybe you're a regular teacher going. 00:06:22.959 --> 00:06:24.060 You have a bit of a problem with it. 00:06:25.699 --> 00:06:30.699 But do you have a problem with someone being indwelt and possessed by God's Holy Spirit? 00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:36.600 And if you do well, you'll have problems with the supernatural dwelling of the demon's power. 00:06:36.939 --> 00:06:39.560 But here Jesus immediately dismisses. 00:06:39.560 --> 00:06:49.379 And so, as you recognize that it's possible, isn't it, by the messages, for someone to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit and the living God. 00:06:49.439 --> 00:06:50.600 That is what a Christian is. 00:06:51.439 --> 00:06:55.519 You must learn that it's also possible for someone to be indwelt by a demonic power. 00:06:55.519 --> 00:07:02.839 And clearly, Jesus' diagnosis of his condition, he had seizures. 00:07:04.279 --> 00:07:07.979 As people who may suffer from epilepsy may have. 00:07:08.259 --> 00:07:11.099 But that is not the basic problem for which this boy is suffering. 00:07:14.199 --> 00:07:18.779 Let me point out to you what this means as Jesus rebukes and dismisses the demon. 00:07:19.120 --> 00:07:21.419 First of all, Jesus is not an exorcist. 00:07:21.420 --> 00:07:26.759 Jesus doesn't have a super technique that he's learned for this kind of ministry. 00:07:27.160 --> 00:07:32.860 There's been an enormous amount of damage done by the exaltation of some sort of technique. 00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:39.660 That people may learn if they say the right words or the right actions. 00:07:40.580 --> 00:07:44.980 That they may even dismiss the demonic spirit as Jesus here did. 00:07:46.120 --> 00:07:46.780 It's not obvious then. 00:07:46.780 --> 00:07:47.220 Can you see? 00:07:47.660 --> 00:07:50.420 It's his powerful word of command. 00:07:50.420 --> 00:07:51.640 That's what we read. 00:07:51.720 --> 00:07:54.120 He speaks and the demon obeys. 00:07:55.379 --> 00:07:56.900 He speaks as the living God. 00:07:57.000 --> 00:07:58.100 Do you remember what we saw last week? 00:07:58.400 --> 00:08:01.220 God the Father says, this is my son with whom I'm well pleased. 00:08:02.740 --> 00:08:08.100 And Jesus speaks with all the authority and power that had just been demonstrated on the Mount of Transfiguration. 00:08:08.560 --> 00:08:11.000 The one from whom heaven had been opened up. 00:08:11.360 --> 00:08:14.480 And God says, this is my son, my love, and I'm well pleased with him. 00:08:14.480 --> 00:08:19.900 And he comes down from that heavenly glory into this world's ultimate darkness. 00:08:20.340 --> 00:08:22.340 And he commands the demons to depart from him. 00:08:24.400 --> 00:08:26.340 And he does so by a word of his power. 00:08:26.339 --> 00:08:33.419 And it's the power of God overcoming the power of Satan which is downstairs here. 00:08:34.399 --> 00:08:35.459 It's not a technique. 00:08:37.059 --> 00:08:49.419 The second thing that we need to say is it's not true that the New Testament mistook illnesses for demonic possession. 00:08:49.419 --> 00:08:50.779 That's often said to me. 00:08:50.819 --> 00:08:51.439 They were just naive. 00:08:52.659 --> 00:08:54.919 They just didn't know what these illnesses were. 00:08:56.620 --> 00:09:00.599 They mistook illnesses in general for demon possession. 00:09:01.339 --> 00:09:02.279 They were just simple folk. 00:09:02.279 --> 00:09:12.179 So people patronisingly say, they look at the Gospel and they'll say, well we have superior knowledge, we have more scientific knowledge, medicine has advanced. 00:09:12.659 --> 00:09:18.299 And we know that this particular disease, as a matter of fact, is not demon possession. 00:09:18.299 --> 00:09:28.120 But actually, if you're willing to read the Gospels, Matthew, Martha, Luke or John, we'd love you to take Matthew's Gospel away from you today and read it. 00:09:28.199 --> 00:09:33.719 If you're willing to read it carefully, you will discover that the Gospels are very, very particular and very careful. 00:09:35.099 --> 00:09:40.240 And they divide between demonic possession and ordinary illness. 00:09:40.240 --> 00:09:49.799 And so you'll find a refrain that says that they brought to Jesus many who were sick and those who were oppressed by demons. 00:09:50.860 --> 00:09:54.100 There is always a distinction made between the two. 00:09:54.399 --> 00:09:56.500 And it's very, very important for you and I to grasp that. 00:10:00.320 --> 00:10:06.159 And it shows us also that the spiritual weakness and poverty of the disciples is exposed. 00:10:06.159 --> 00:10:11.339 They are helpless in the face of demonic powers. 00:10:12.980 --> 00:10:15.139 And these are the powers that they're confronting at this point. 00:10:16.759 --> 00:10:20.559 They are waging war against, not against flesh and blood. 00:10:21.339 --> 00:10:27.860 But they are waging war against principalities and powers, against the spiritual wickednesses in the heavenly places. 00:10:27.860 --> 00:10:37.100 And it's here that the Church of Jesus, in every age, is dealing with the real enemy. 00:10:39.480 --> 00:10:47.879 It's really easy for us as a Church to think on a purely superficial, material and worldly level. 00:10:47.879 --> 00:10:54.720 To think that you can deal with things just by organisation and by recruitment. 00:10:56.120 --> 00:10:59.360 You can deal with these things by the exercise of human skills. 00:11:01.759 --> 00:11:06.139 But when you're dealing with a life that's in the hands of the powers of darkness. 00:11:07.100 --> 00:11:12.700 The Bible teaches us you don't meet such spiritual forces just with organisation. 00:11:13.639 --> 00:11:14.399 Or with recruitment. 00:11:14.779 --> 00:11:16.360 Or with the exercise of human skills. 00:11:16.360 --> 00:11:19.659 With worldly armour. 00:11:21.060 --> 00:11:25.039 These disciples were helpless in the face of that kind of opposition. 00:11:25.659 --> 00:11:28.259 They cannot deal with this boy. 00:11:29.840 --> 00:11:31.180 And that leads me to the second thing. 00:11:31.240 --> 00:11:34.460 The second thing is the distress in the heart of Jesus. 00:11:34.620 --> 00:11:36.080 The desperation of the Father. 00:11:36.639 --> 00:11:38.899 The distress in the heart of Jesus. 00:11:40.200 --> 00:11:44.100 And again, I think as we read through the Gospels, we find something unusual here. 00:11:44.100 --> 00:11:48.800 It's an expression of Jesus' high emotion. 00:11:49.639 --> 00:11:53.960 He's expressing pain and anguish in spirit. 00:11:55.200 --> 00:12:00.080 He's uncovering that frustration that's right at the core of his being. 00:12:00.080 --> 00:12:03.980 It's a famous
