We're glad that you're here. This morning we're continuing our series in the book of Romans. 00:00:21.399 --> 00:00:33.799 The book of Romans is a letter written by the Apostle Paul in the 50s AD. It's called Romans because it is written to the churches in the city of Rome and it is about the gospel. 00:00:34.399 --> 00:00:38.640 It's about the good news of Jesus' life and death and resurrection. 00:00:39.320 --> 00:00:53.599 We are getting to the end of Romans chapter 8. If you read the congregational letter that came out in February, you know that after we finish chapter 8, we are headed back to the book of Genesis for the story of Isaac. 00:00:53.600 --> 00:01:04.760 It shows up in Genesis chapters 25 through 37 and then the plan, Lord willing, is when we finish with Isaac, we'll return again to Romans and we'll pick back up with chapter 9. 00:01:05.740 --> 00:01:16.079 So we're finishing chapter 8, which is about life in the Spirit, the Holy Spirit, and we're continuing a problem that was introduced all the way back in verse 17. 00:01:16.079 --> 00:01:25.159 So you remember verses 12 through 17 of chapter 8, Paul tells us, look, good news, you've been adopted by God, you're God's children. 00:01:25.599 --> 00:01:27.620 And then he tells us this in verse 17, 00:01:28.379 --> 00:01:40.000 And if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. 00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:49.120 And so there's the problem. Adoption ultimately results in glory, but we have to pass through suffering first. 00:01:49.960 --> 00:01:56.700 And so that raised this question that we've been kind of chipping away at for a number of weeks, which is, okay, glory, that's great that that's coming. 00:01:57.299 --> 00:02:00.079 How do we make it through the suffering in the meantime? 00:02:00.859 --> 00:02:04.359 Verses 18 through 25 gave us our first answer. 00:02:04.359 --> 00:02:12.120 We make it through the suffering by meditating on understanding, realizing how great heaven is. 00:02:13.500 --> 00:02:20.319 So the hope of 00:04:52.119 One of the great principles of Scripture that I mention to you all from time to time 00:04:52.119 --> 00:04:59.319 is that God never commands us to do something that he does not enable and empower. 00:04:59.319 --> 00:05:02.139 And he does that in a wide variety of ways. 00:05:02.259 --> 00:05:07.139 God has a vast repertoire of things he gives us to help us. 00:05:07.259 --> 00:05:13.560 The emphasis in chapter 8 of Romans is God's gift of the Holy Spirit, 00:05:13.680 --> 00:05:17.959 the help that is given to us by the Spirit. 00:05:18.500 --> 00:05:22.240 That's why verse 26 starts with the verse, likewise. 00:05:23.060 --> 00:05:29.219 He's saying, look, here's the next item in this list of supports that I'm giving you. 00:05:29.560 --> 00:05:31.680 God enables are not just because of our struggle against sin. 00:06:26.819 --> 00:06:28.939 They're also because of our own frailty. 00:06:29.199 --> 00:06:31.560 There is this inability, this weakness, 00:06:31.560 --> 00:06:34.800 that shows up in our lives, 00:06:34.800 --> 00:06:36.379 even if it's not something sinful, 00:06:36.620 --> 00:06:38.639 because it's part of being human. 00:06:38.800 --> 00:06:44.600 There are significant limitations that we knock up against as finite people. 00:06:44.600 --> 00:06:47.180 And one way, Paul tells us, 00:06:47.240 --> 00:06:52.400 that inability, that weakness, that frailty pops up in our lives 00:06:52.400 --> 00:06:55.080 is when we turn to pray. 00:06:56.080 --> 00:06:57.720 And we turn to pray, 00:06:58.320 --> 00:07:05.960 and our frailty means often we have no idea what to pray for. 00:07:05.959 --> 00:07:09.159 We know we're supposed to talk to God, 00:07:09.839 --> 00:07:13.659 but what is it we're actually supposed to say? --> 00:07:23.759 hey, I really need your prayers, 00:07:23.819 --> 00:07:25.120 I want you to pray for me, 00:07:25.159 --> 00:07:26.939 and you say, yes, absolutely, 00:07:27.359 --> 00:07:29.179 and then you go to pray for them, 00:07:29.199 --> 00:07:30.279 and you realize, 00:07:30.799 --> 00:07:34.319 what am I praying to God for? 00:07:34.319 --> 00:07:36.560 I know what the problem is. 00:07:37.199 --> 00:07:39.360 I have no idea what the solution is. 00:07:40.740 --> 00:07:44.339 I'm not sure what it is exactly I'm supposed to be asking for. 00:07:44.560 --> 00:07:48.040 There are situations that are truly baffling to us. 00:07:48.759 --> 00:07:50.180 So you have a friend, 00:07:50.959 --> 00:07:52.379 and there's a great tragedy, right? 00:07:52.420 --> 00:07:53.899 They're facing a terminal illness. 00:07:54.060 --> 00:07:56.759 You know that within a short amount of time, 00:07:56.839 --> 00:07:57.699 this person will die. 00:07:59.319 --> 00:08:02.740 So it doesn't make sense for you to pray for healing. 00:08:02.740 --> 00:08:05.100 Death comes for all of us. 00:08:05.160 --> 00:08:05.639 It's inevitable. 00:08:06.400 --> 00:08:09.500 Maybe you pray for comfort or relief from pain. 00:08:09.620 --> 00:08:12.579 Maybe you ask that God would fix their eyes on heaven. 00:08:13.660 --> 00:08:14.439 What else? 00:08:16.100 --> 00:08:18.240 What else can you pray --> 00:08:39.439 And you think, well, is that a good prayer? 00:08:40.980 --> 00:08:43.699 Will that take them closer to Christ, 00:08:43.759 --> 00:08:45.580 or will it draw them farther away? 00:08:46.179 --> 00:08:48.480 Will that make them proud or arrogant, 00:08:48.480 --> 00:08:51.279 or will they serve as a light for the gospel there? 00:08:51.279 --> 00:08:54.939 Well, for some people, maybe that's a good thing for them. 00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:56.240 Others, it's a bad thing. 00:08:57.519 --> 00:08:58.919 And you don't know God's will. 00:09:01.000 --> 00:09:04.220 You don't know if it's good or bad in this situation. 00:09:04.459 --> 00:09:05.519 So how should you pray? 00:09:05.659 --> 00:09:06.879 Should you do what they've asked? 00:09:07.159 --> 00:09:09.399 Should you pray that God doesn't get them into Harvard? 00:09:10.879 --> 00:09:11.779 You don't know. 00:09:13.139 --> 00:09:14.819 You have great weakness. 00:09:14.820 --> 00:09:19.520 And then, of course, and confusion is so overwhelming, 00:09:42.260 --> 00:09:44.580 perhaps you feel like you can't even breathe. 00:09:44.820 --> 00:09:53.180 Your spouse tells you that they want out of the marriage. that your best friend has left the Lord. 00:10:21.440 --> 00:10:24.040 Wars and rumors of wars break out, 00:10:25.060 --> 00:10:28.060 whether in the Middle East or somewhere else. 00:10:28.059 --> 00:10:32.079 And you want to cry out to God. 00:10:33.079 --> 00:10:35.319 You just don't know what to say. 00:10:37.439 --> 00:10:41.739 And you don't know what to say because of your weakness. 00:10:41.740 --> 00:10:51.320 It's in that confusion that the Holy Spirit helps. 00:10:53.320 --> 00:10:54.759 Verse 26. 00:10:55.759 --> 00:11:03.860 The Spirit himself intercedes for us with
