Let me introduce you to them. 00:03:01.939 --> 00:03:08.079 In the one corner, we've got Adam, the very first human being, as we'll come on to see, 00:03:08.439 --> 00:03:09.680 that God made in his image. 00:03:09.740 --> 00:03:11.159 In the other corner, we've got Jesus. 00:03:12.419 --> 00:03:16.500 The two most influential people our world has ever seen. 00:03:17.759 --> 00:03:23.020 And so influential are these two individuals that every single human being 00:03:23.020 --> 00:03:26.000 who has ever lived or who will ever live, 00:03:26.880 --> 00:03:30.180 finds themselves in one of these two teams, 00:03:30.680 --> 00:03:37.360 finds themselves living the whole of their lives under the influence of one of these two individuals. 00:03:38.280 --> 00:03:40.860 Now, it was Puritan Thomas Goodwin who said this. 00:03:40.920 --> 00:03:42.680 This was his observation of Romans 5. 00:03:42.780 --> 00:03:46.719 In God's sight, there are only two men, Adam and Jesus Christ. 00:03:46.719 --> 00:03:51.800 And these two men have all other men hanging at their girdle strings. 00:03:52.479 --> 00:03:56.840 So he's identifying the fact that the whole of humanity finds themselves in one of these two teams. 00:03:58.199 --> 00:04:00.639 And what we're going to do today is we're going to think about these two men. 00:04:01.759 --> 00:04:03.099 And we're going to think like Humpty Dumpty's. 00:04:51.199 --> 00:04:52.920 Okay, I've not lost the plot, stick with me. 00:04:53.319 --> 00:04:55.960 Adam's song is a lot like Humpty Dumpty. 00:04:56.080 --> 00:04:59.639 So if you just take Humpty Dumpty and you replace it with the original Adam, 00:04:59.939 --> 00:05:01.120 you'll begin to see what I mean. 00:05:01.680 --> 00:05:03.759 Right, if you don't believe me, let's go and we'll see how this works. 00:05:03.759 --> 00:05:06.060 Here's how Adam's story goes. 00:05:06.740 --> 00:05:09.860 Original Adam sat on a wall, right? 00:05:10.279 --> 00:05:16.659 So things started so well for Adam, the very first human being that God made in his image. 00:05:16.779 --> 00:05:19.860 God takes him, God creates him in the Garden of Eden, 00:05:20.120 --> 00:05:24.560 sets him there to develop, to care for the world which God made. 00:05:24.560 --> 00:05:30.959 And in the Garden of Eden, we have this glorious, harmonious relationship between creator and creation, 00:05:31.839 --> 00:05:34.259 between God and man. 00:05:34.720 --> 00:05:36.199 Glorious harmony. 00:05:37.199 --> 00:05:41.220 And so God creates Eve, the very first woman, who together with Adam, 00:05:41.379 --> 00:05:44.980 forming this complementary team, God declares this is very good. 00:05:45.639 --> 00:05:46.600 This is brilliant. 00:05:47.180 --> 00:05:48.259 This brings me glory. 00:05:48.340 --> 00:05:49.579 And it was, it was glorious. 00:05:49.579 --> 00:05:49.859 Yes. 00:05:50.359 --> 00:05:53.479 And as we heard earlier, there's one stipulation from God. 00:05:55.740 --> 00:05:58.120 God said, out of all the beautiful trees in the garden, 00:05:58.759 --> 00:06:01.459 there's one tree which I don't want you to eat from. 00:06:02.639 --> 00:06:04.199 It's called the knowledge of good and evil. 00:06:04.279 --> 00:06:05.120 That's why I've called this tree. 00:06:05.180 --> 00:06:06.439 And I don't want you to eat from it. 00:06:07.180 --> 00:06:08.299 Don't want you to touch it. 00:06:08.300 --> 00:06:13.139 And here, as it were, was God saying to his dream team, Adam and Eve, 00:06:13.199 --> 00:06:16.500 here he is saying, I want you to show me that you love me. 00:06:17.139 --> 00:06:22.340 I want you to show me that you trust me because I want you to obey what I'm telling you to do. 00:06:22.379 --> 00:06:23.000 Because then I'll know. 00:06:23.819 --> 00:06:24.060 Right? 00:06:24.259 --> 00:06:27.080 And this is the heart of true biblical obedience. 00:06:27.080 --> 00:06:31.780 It stems from a true love for God, a deep love of God that's just got all of us. 00:06:31.779 --> 00:06:37.259 And it flows from this new desire that God has given us with these new hearts that beat for him, 00:06:37.359 --> 00:06:38.859 that 00:06:50.339 And of course, along comes Satan who sows that seed of doubt in Eve's mind. 00:06:51.500 --> 00:06:53.519 And he says, did God really say that? 00:06:54.059 --> 00:06:55.179 Did God really say that? 00:06:55.659 --> 00:06:58.199 I mean, no matter where you put the emphasis on in that verse, 00:06:58.199 --> 00:07:02.719 he's got that feeling of somebody trying to sow the seed of doubt in Eve's mind. 00:07:03.379 --> 00:07:04.420 Did God really say that? 00:07:04.459 --> 00:07:05.579 Did God really say that? 00:07:05.620 --> 00:07:06.920 Did God really say that? 00:07:07.000 Bible story, 00:07:59.020 --> 00:08:03.520 As you read on after Genesis 3, we start to get words like shame, 00:08:04.820 --> 00:08:10.200 And guilt, and murder, and envy, and rage. 00:08:10.360 --> 00:08:11.740 It's the entire world. 00:08:11.820 --> 00:08:13.000 This is what the author is trying to tell us. 00:08:13.040 --> 00:08:14.980 The entire world, not just Adam and Eve, 00:08:15.040 --> way. 00:09:27.099 --> 00:09:27.899 And our world, doesn't it, 00:09:27.939 --> 00:09:29.919 It dresses up death in phrases like 00:09:29.919 --> 00:09:32.059 They're now sleeping with the angels. 00:09:32.719 --> 00:09:34.419 Or they are in a better place. 00:09:34.500 --> 00:09:36.819 Or aren't they looking down on us from the stars. 00:09:37.779 --> 00:09:41.139 All the while trying to dress up death as if it's natural. 00:09:42.779 --> 00:09:44.339 And God would tell us in His Word, 00:09:44.439 --> 00:09:46.639 How loving of Him to give us His Word, 00:09:46.699 --> 00:09:47.559 That we could know this, 00:09:47.639 --> 00:09:49.319 That death is anything but natural. 00:09:51.859 --> 00:09:52.719 But you see, friends, 00:09:52.779 --> 00:09:54.359 By very nature, we're all in this
