said, sequentially, it comes after the return of Christ but before the making of the new heavens and the new earth. 00:02:15.139 --> 00:02:19.420 Now, next week, Matt Sear is going to get to preach on the great white throne judgment. 00:02:19.419 --> 00:02:24.099 That's the second half of Revelation chapter 20. 00:02:24.559 --> 00:02:30.779 But this morning, the thousand-year reign of Christ on earth, the millennium. 00:02:31.060 --> 00:02:34.859 When you hear thousand years, a thousand years is a millennium. 00:02:37.119 --> 00:02:41.039 So I'm going to walk us through Revelation chapter 21 through 10. 00:02:41.139 --> 00:02:43.179 There are three scenes that I want you to see. 00:02:43.180 --> 00:02:53.620 And what it's all designed to do is give you a future glimpse of a coming glory that should put hope in your heart that makes you endure. 00:02:55.060 --> 00:02:56.360 It's persevering power. 00:02:58.099 --> 00:03:02.819 But before I go there, I just need to make a basic observation. 00:03:03.540 --> 00:03:06.400 And then I want to show you my interpretive hand. 00:03:09.000 --> 00:03:09.439 Okay. 00:03:09.700 --> 00:03:11.540 So here's the basic observation. 00:03:11.539 --> 00:03:23.439 If you're looking at Revelation chapter 20, that little phrase, 1,000 years, it shows up six times in ten verses. 00:03:24.259 --> 00:03:36.019 Now, if you're a student of the Bible, you realize that when a phrase like that shows up as frequently as that in such a short amount of scriptural real estate like that, 00:03:36.019 --> 00:03:38.620 you realize it's getting your attention. 00:03:39.500 --> 00:03:40.939 It's emphatic. 00:03:41.539 --> 00:03:49.239 So let me just point out from the very front of this sermon, I want you to see it. 00:03:49.639 --> 00:03:58.719 At the end of chapter 20, verse 2, that Satan is bound and thrown into an abyss for a thousand years. 00:03:58.719 --> 00:04:06.419 And then at the end of verse 3, he's there. 00:04:06.419 --> 00:04:09.139 That's the second time a thousand years shows up. 00:04:09.419 --> 00:04:16.319 The third time is at the end of verse 4, talking about those who've been raised as part of the first resurrection. 00:04:16.819 --> 00:04:19.980 They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 00:04:19.980 --> 00:04:25.200 Verse 5, the rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. 00:04:25.740 --> 00:04:34.060 And then at the end of verse 6, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years. 00:04:34.140 --> 00:04:35.200 It's the fifth time. 00:04:35.280 --> 00:04:40.900 And then the sixth time, verse 7, and when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison. 00:04:40.899 --> 00:04:43.659 A thousand years shows up six times. 00:04:45.159 --> 00:04:46.219 Here's what you need to know. 00:04:46.319 --> 00:04:51.000 This is the only place in your Bible that the thousand-year reign of Jesus Christ is referenced. 00:04:51.000 --> 00:05:02.920 And so what that means is that there are a lot of Bible-believing Christians who've been bought by the blood of Jesus that have different positions on the millennial reign of Jesus. 00:05:04.439 --> 00:05:09.579 There's debate how to interpret this thousand-year reign of Jesus. 00:05:09.759 --> 00:05:11.540 Here are some of the options. 00:05:12.120 --> 00:05:15.819 There is, remember, a thousand years means a millennium. 00:05:16.439 --> 00:05:19.560 So have you ever heard of post-millennialism? 00:05:19.699 --> 00:05:20.620 I know that's a big word. 00:05:20.620 --> 00:05:31.379 But the idea behind it is it's a position which Christians believe that there will be this golden age of the gospel going out on earth, and things will be transformed. 00:05:31.899 --> 00:05:35.480 And at the end of this millennium, Christ will return. 00:05:35.639 --> 00:05:42.220 So the post of post-millennium is that Jesus comes back after the millennium, post-millennium. 00:05:42.680 --> 00:05:44.199 I'm not a post-millennialist. 00:05:45.120 --> 00:05:48.100 And then there is the ah-millennialist position. 00:05:48.100 --> 00:05:52.020 Ah- meaning no or non. 00:05:52.939 --> 00:06:00.460 And so an ah-millennist will say, no, there is not a literal 1,000-year reign of Jesus on earth. 00:06:00.459 --> 00:06:12.180 They will hold that the millennium is more of a symbolic reign that began when Christ ascended to the right hand of the Father and will culminate upon his return. 00:06:12.519 --> 00:06:17.379 And so the idea is all millennialists believe that the millennium is actually the church age. 00:06:18.079 --> 00:06:20.179 We're in the millennium is what they would teach. 00:06:20.180 --> 00:06:27.100 Now, I am not an ah-millennialist, but I am very sympathetic to ah-millennialists. 00:06:27.160 --> 00:06:29.519 I've got ah-millennialist friends, believe it or not. 00:06:29.519 --> 00:06:36.060 I'm actually pretty sympathetic to that position. 00:06:37.379 --> 00:06:39.979 And then there is the pan-millennialists. 00:06:42.339 --> 00:06:46.120 If you're a Bible scholar, you're saying, I've never read of pan-millennialism. 00:06:47.399 --> 00:06:51.079 Well, pan-millennialism is it all pans out at the end. 00:06:52.240 --> 00:06:53.959 It's not really a technical position. 00:06:53.959 --> 00:06:56.319 I know that Jesus wins and he rocks. 00:06:56.459 --> 00:06:57.099 I'm for it. 00:06:57.159 --> 00:06:57.839 Come, Lord Jesus. 00:07:00.199 --> 00:07:02.099 I used to be a pan-millennialist. 00:07:04.759 --> 00:07:12.019 But now I have embraced what's called a pre-millennialist understanding. 00:07:13.659 --> 00:07:22.819 And what a pre-millennialist is, it's based on a careful study of your Bible, this passage in particular, and your understanding of Revelation as a whole. 00:07:22.819 --> 00:07:30.579 And that is the conviction that Jesus will return to earth bodily before the millennium. 00:07:31.800 --> 00:07:36.519 And he will reign physically on earth for this thousand years. 00:07:36.519 --> 00:07:51.359 And so what that means is, we are not in the millennium now, but when Jesus returns, Revelation 19, and he wipes out the beast and false prophet in Armageddon, 00:07:51.919 --> 00:07:56.120 he's going to usher in the millennium when he is reigning on earth. 00:07:56.120 --> 00:08:04.780 And following the millennium, we have final judgment and then the new heavens and the new earth and the new Jerusalem. 00:08:04.779 --> 00:08:14.439 And so it's part of a basic time sequence at the end of the book of Revelation. 00:08:14.759 --> 00:08:17.219 Now there's a bunch of other reasons why I'm a pre-millennialist. 00:08:17.279 --> 00:08:18.959 But why I'm telling you this is this. 00:08:19.359 --> 00:08:25.619 I'm going to approach Revelation 20, 1 through 10, from a pre-millennial framework. 00:08:25.620 --> 00:08:31.160 And so if you want to know more of why I'm a pre-millennialist, I'd be glad to tell you. 00:08:32.100 --> 00:08:34.019 But I'm going to argue it from the text. Jesus on earth. 00:09:07.539 --> 00:09:11.339 These three scenes from Revelation 21 through 10. 00:09:11.340 --> 00:09:13.540 And here are how these three scenes are organized. 00:09:13.980 --> 00:09:17.820 We get a view immediately before the thousand-year reigns. 00:09:17.840 --> 00:09:19.000 That verses 1 through 3. 00:09:19.280 --> 00:09:22.879 We get to see what's going on during the thousand-year reign. 00:09:22.960 --> 00:09:23.759 That's 4 through 6. 00:09:24.060 --> 00:09:28.420 And then in 7 and 10, what happens immediately after the thousand-year reign. 00:09:28.680 --> 00:09:31.940 And it's all this future glimpse to put hope in your heart, Christian. 00:09:34.259 --> 00:09:38.980 So let's turn to scene 1, chapter 21 through 3. 00:09:38.980 --> 00:09:45.820 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a gray chain. 00:09:46.860 --> 00:09:51.500 And he seized the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, 00:09:51.659 --> 00:09:56.360 and threw him into the pit and shut it and sealed it, so that he may not deceive the nations any longer, 00:09:56.440 --> 00:09:57.940 until the thousand years were ended. 00:09:58.960 --> 00:10:00.879 After that, he must be released for a little while. 00:10:00.879 --> 00:10:10.240 So remember, Revelation 20, 1 through 10 follows Revelation 19, 11 through 21, when Christ comes back. 00:10:11.039 --> 00:10:17.019 So I'm understanding Revelation 20, 1 through 10, as taking place with Jesus on the earth. 00:10:18.960 --> 00:10:20.600 So he's already returned. 00:10:20.600 --> 00:10:26.440 He's already thrown the beast and false prophets, had them seized, thrown into the lake of fire. 00:10:26.800 --> 00:10:34.440 And so we wrap up at the end of Revelation 19, the second and third person of the anti-trinity are being tormented in the lake of fire. 00:10:34.540 --> 00:10:36.560 And you're left asking, well, what about their ringleader? 00:10:38.040 --> 00:10:39.019 What about the devil? 00:10:40.139 --> 00:10:41.460 What's his fate? 00:10:41.460 --> 00:10:48.879 Chapter 20, verse 1, an angel comes down from heaven, and what you need to notice is what he's holding on to. 00:10:49.500 --> 00:10:53.560 In his hand is a key to the bottomless pit, the abyss. 00:10:53.639 --> 00:10:54.900 We've already encountered that. 00:10:55.220 --> 00:10:55.920 Chapter 9. 00:10:57.019 --> 00:11:03.220 It's this hell hole where demonic beasts come out of, bent on destruction. 00:11:03.360 --> 00:11:10.639 And an angel, in chapter 9, comes down with a key and unlocks the lid to that hell hole, and they go destroy things. 00:11:11.460 --> 00:11:17.300 The abyss is pictured as a place where demons are locked away and restrained. 00:11:17.920 --> 00:11:20.259 And there's seemingly only one key. 00:11:21.360 --> 00:11:24.000 And we have an angel returning with the key. 00:11:25.620 --> 00:11:30.600 That hell hole is open, but he's about to close it and lock it. 00:11:31.720 --> 00:11:33.259 He's also got a chain. 00:11:34.340 --> 00:11:36.560 And that chain is in his hand. 00:11:37.019 --> 00:11:38.340 It's not bling. 00:11:38.340 --> 00:11:46.639 It is there in his hand because he's going to bind something. 00:11:47.639 --> 00:11:49.160 To capture something. 00:11:49.580 --> 00:11:52.700 This angel is on a dragon hunt. 00:11:52.700 --> 00:11:59.960 So, what we see happening is, the angel comes down. 00:12:00.040 --> 00:12:03.240 He's got this key to the abyss, and he's got this chain. 00:12:03.860 --> 00:12:12.040 And we're not told about the size of this chain or the composition of this chain, but I'm guessing if you got a close-up look on one of those links of the chain, 00:12:12.039 --> 00:12:16.039 you would see this written, forged in heaven. 00:12:16.279 --> 00:12:17.819 Nothing can break the chain. 00:12:17.820 --> 00:12:27.400 And in chapter 20, verses 2 and 3, we see what this angel comes and does. 00:12:28.120 --> 00:12:29.200 Five verbs. 00:12:29.980 --> 00:12:32.300 He shows up and seizes the dragon. 00:12:33.300 --> 00:12:40.780 There's this pileup of titles so that you know that there's no doubt of who this angel is angel handling. 00:12:40.779 --> 00:12:46.620 The dragon, the ancient serpent, the devil, literally the Satan, the accuser. 00:12:47.600 --> 00:12:49.939 We were introduced to him back in Revelation chapter 12. 00:12:52.839 --> 00:12:55.439 This angel comes down and seizes the dragon. 00:12:55.559 --> 00:12:58.939 We're not told about like this battle that ensues. 00:12:59.039 --> 00:13:01.299 I'm just picturing he grabbed him by the scruff of his neck. 00:13:01.299 --> 00:13:05.779 And then he seizes them, the second verb. 00:13:05.879 --> 00:13:08.740 He binds him, bound him for a thousand years. 00:13:09.120 --> 00:13:11.779 It's the first time that millennium shows up. 00:13:13.559 --> 00:13:16.179 00:13:42.500 Jesus isn't getting his hands dirty here. 00:13:44.960 --> 00:13:50.320 And then in my mind, the fourth verb is not only the third verb threw him into the abyss. 00:13:50.460 --> 00:13:53.180 The fourth verb is he shut the lid on the abyss. 00:13:53.360 --> 00:13:55.440 I picture he's just kind of like kicked it shut. 00:13:56.080 --> 00:13:58.000 It's like this mantle cover abyss. 00:14:13.700 --> 00:14:20.899 And then if that's not enough, the fifth verb is he sealed the entrance over the chain-bound dragon. 00:14:21.980 --> 00:14:24.080 I wonder what that seal read. we're given the reason why Satan is seized, bound, thrown into this, closed and sealed. 00:15:08.120 --> 00:15:12.620 We read, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer. 00:15:12.779 --> 00:15:21.980 For a thousand years, Satan is completely removed from exercising his deceptive influence that opposes Christ and leads the nations away. 00:15:21.980 --> 00:15:28.440 And then the very This is his sovereign plan being worked out, and we're given a future glimpse of it to put hope in your heart. 00:16:14.259 --> 00:16:19.200 So let me summarize this. 00:16:19.319 --> 00:16:23.319 After Jesus returns to earth, Satan is seized, bound, thrown into the abyss. 00:16:23.759 --> 00:16:28.340 The angel kicks the door shut, seals it with a seal for a thousand years, the millennium. 1,000-year reign on earth. 00:16:44.259 --> 00:16:56.899 So if 21-3 takes place immediately before Christ's 1,000-year reign, 20 verses 4-6 shows us what is happening during the 1,000-year reign of Christ. 00:16:57.159 --> 00:16:58.980 But there's a little bit of a surprise to it. 00:16:59.100 --> 00:17:03.600 Because you look at verses 4-6, and you're waiting for Jesus, the spotlight to be on Jesus. 00:17:03.600 --> 00:17:08.160 And what it actually talks about is those of us who are reigning with him. 00:17:12.240 --> 00:17:21.319 So what we see here in this second scene, in 20 verse 4, it opens with John seeing thrones. 00:17:21.319 --> 00:17:27.679 And when you hear throne, your study of the book of Revelation, you know that represents authority. 00:17:31.019 --> 00:17:36.379 And not only does John see these thrones, he sees people sitting on these thrones. 00:17:37.159 --> 00:17:41.599 And these people seated on these thrones were given the right to judge. 00:17:41.700 --> 00:17:43.000 That's what the text says. 00:17:43.779 --> 00:17:45.839 God gives them the right to judge. 00:17:46.740 --> 00:17:49.019 The right to exercise authority. 00:17:49.019 --> 00:17:56.819 In other words, whoever these people are sitting on these thrones, they're legit. 00:17:57.440 --> 00:18:03.220 In God's eyes, to taking up a position of authority during the 1,000-year reign of Jesus. 00:18:04.240 --> 00:18:06.079 So who are these people on the thrones? 00:18:07.619 --> 00:18:09.500 Well, there's a little controversy in this. 00:18:09.579 --> 00:18:11.099 I'm going to give you my best shot at it. 00:18:11.099 --> 00:18:18.639 But we're told in verse 4, definitely who is, who is at least in part on the thrones. 00:18:19.639 --> 00:18:25.559 Also, I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God. 00:18:26.259 --> 00:18:32.279 We know at a minimum, those on the throne are those martyrs of Christ who have gone to their deaths, 00:18:32.519 --> 00:18:35.039 proclaiming Jesus and the word of God. 00:18:35.039 --> 00:18:42.420 Now, that phrase, the testimony of Jesus Christ and the word of God, that shows up in Revelation 1, 9, 00:18:42.579 --> 00:18:52.099 where John is describing himself as one who's committed to the testimony of Jesus and the word of God. 00:18:52.200 --> 00:18:53.279 And he didn't die. 00:18:55.059 --> 00:18:57.180 He was in prison, but he wasn't martyred. 00:18:57.259 --> 00:18:58.019 He wasn't beheaded. 00:18:58.019 --> 00:19:08.500 So that makes me think that those who are on the throne, at least some of them are those who've been beheaded for Jesus. 00:19:09.920 --> 00:19:13.680 And what follows next, in the ESV it reads, 00:19:14.019 --> 00:19:14.740 ESV it reads, 00:19:14.940 --> 00:19:19.980 And those who had not worshipped the beast for its image and had not received the mark on their foreheads or their hands. 00:19:19.980 --> 00:19:23.920 This could be a reference to those beheaded, the martyrs, 00:19:23.920 --> 00:19:30.220 or it could be a more general reference to those people who had not bowed the knee to the beast. 00:19:30.820 --> 00:19:36.519 And so you can have two groups of people here who are faithful to Christ all the way until the end of their death, 00:19:36.800 --> 00:19:37.800 whether martyred or not. 00:19:38.880 --> 00:19:44.060 I tend to think that whether you hold one view or the other throughout the book of Revelation, 00:19:45.259 --> 00:19:49.380 those martyrs, Revelation 6, 9, who are under the altar crying, 00:19:49.500 --> 00:19:50.600 How long, O Lord? 00:19:50.599 --> 00:19:53.899 Lord, they represent the church. 00:19:57.319 --> 00:19:59.240 They're a figurehead of sorts. 00:20:01.839 --> 00:20:11.539 So what I believe is going on here is that those sitting on these multiple thrones are actually the great multitude. 00:20:13.519 --> 00:20:17.519 Those who've been faithful to Jesus all the days of their life. 00:20:17.519 --> Jesus, whether martyred or not. 00:20:49.380 --> 00:20:54.420 So here's the question. 00:20:56.720 --> 00:21:05.500 How is it that dead people sit on thrones and reign with Christ? 00:21:05.500 --> 00:21:12.140 Because in this text that we're reading that they are reigning with Christ. 00:21:13.099 --> 00:21:19.960 You can see that, I believe, at the end of chapter, verse 5 and 6. 00:21:19.960
