00:00:23.820 I want us to first take a look back at verses 16 and 17, 00:00:24.219 --> 00:00:29.240 and consider particularly the phrase in the last half of verse 17. 00:00:29.239 --> 00:00:31.639 There Paul writes, 00:00:31.839 --> 00:00:36.339 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. 00:00:37.060 --> 00:00:41.619 And if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ. 00:00:42.359 --> 00:00:47.219 Now, here is the phrase that we need to be clear about before proceeding further in the chapter. 00:00:48.200 --> 00:00:54.759 Provided we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him. 00:00:54.759 --> 00:01:03.739 Now, last week we altogether neglected that half of that verse and spent little to no time on it at all. 00:01:33.979 We walk the path that He walked. 00:01:34.959 --> 00:01:39.459 Jesus states the matter plainly in John chapter 15, verse 18 and following, 00:01:39.579 --> 00:01:40.099 where He said, 00:01:40.219 --> 00:01:42.199 If the world hates you, 00:01:43.199 --> 00:01:47.519 know that it has hated me before it hated you. 00:01:47.679 --> 00:01:48.919 And you may want to qualify that. 00:01:48.920 --> 00:01:49.260 He said, 00:01:49.460 --> 00:01:51.260 If the world hates you, 00:01:51.280 --> 00:01:52.439 but He goes on, 00:01:53.180 --> 00:01:55.019 If you were of the world, --> 00:03:03.719 when he predicted the sufferings of Christ 00:03:03.719 --> 00:03:06.560 and the subsequent glories. 00:03:06.560 --> 00:03:12.219 Christ came to suffer that we might be saved and to be glorified. 00:03:13.560 --> 00:03:15.479 John Murray once said, 00:03:16.439 --> 00:03:20.259 There is no sharing in Christ's glory unless there is sharing in his sufferings. 00:03:21.259 --> 00:03:25.120 Sufferings and then glory was the order appointed for Christ himself. 00:03:25.120 --> 00:03:31.599 It could not be otherwise in terms of his messianic undertaking and design. things. 00:04:58.019 --> 00:05:02.199 Living in a place that's not as it should be. 00:05:03.379 --> 00:05:08.779 I believe that Christians ought to be all at once the saddest people on earth, 00:05:09.040 --> 00:05:12.439 for we see the brokenness of it. 00:05:12.439 --> 00:05:16.339 I find as I grow in Christlikeness, 00:05:16.339 --> 00:05:21.339 I am sadder about the state of the place in which I live, 00:05:21.480 --> 00:05:23.420 but also, at the same time, 00:05:23.800 --> 00:05:27.019 we should be the happiest people on earth. 00:05:27.540 --> 00:05:28.839 For we have a promise, 00:05:29.220 --> 00:05:32.519 made by the one who can keep that promise, 00:05:32.639 --> 00:05:37.040 that it will all one day be made right. 00:05:37.040 --> 00:05:39.980 So, I hope as you mature in acquainted with grief. 00:06:19.279 --> 00:06:21.519 And as one from whom men hide their faces, 00:06:21.680 --> 00:06:25.439 he was despised and we esteemed him not. 00:06:26.099 --> 00:06:28.759 Certainly, there's persecution seen there. 00:06:29.479 --> 00:06:30.000 Verse 4, 00:06:30.139 --> 00:06:35.560 Surely, he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. 00:06:36.179 --> 00:06:37.459 Yet we esteemed him stricken, 00:06:37.459 --> 00:06:40.859 smitten by God and afflicted. 00:06:40.860 --> 00:06:43.139 Jesus suffered. 00:06:43.520 --> 00:06:44.759 He suffered rejection. 00:06:45.400 --> 00:06:46.980 He suffered bodily. 00:06:47.500 --> 00:06:50.199 He suffered the cursed creation. 00:06:50.900 --> 00:06:54.400 But he was glorified. 00:06:55.199 --> 00:07:01.420 May we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. 00:07:02.340 --> 00:07:03.860 So now, with all of this in mind, 00:07:03.860 --> 00:07:09.680 there's this tension built there in which we live. 00:07:09.680 --> 00:07:12.980 Let's read and study today's text. 00:07:13.280 --> 00:07:17.280 So Romans chapter 8, verse 18 through 27. 00:07:18.019 --> 00:07:19.840 Before I read it, I'd like to remind you, beloved, 00:07:19.939 --> 00:07:22.220 that this is God's word to us. 00:07:22.699 --> 00:07:25.840 It was written for his glory and for our good. 00:07:26.220 --> 00:07:28.879 And so we would all do well to listen to it 00:07:28.879 --> 00:07:30.600 in order to believe its promises 00:07:30.600 --> 00:07:32.600 and to obey its commands. 00:07:34.200 --> 00:07:37.640 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time 00:07:37.640 --> 00:07:39.860 are not worth comparing with the glory 00:07:39.860 --> 00:07:41.720 that is to be revealed to us. 00:07:42.379 --> 00:08:57.600 --> 00:08:59.319 building an argument for, 00:08:59.500 --> 00:09:03.059 I consider that the sufferings of this present time 00:09:03.059 --> 00:09:05.459 are not worth comparing with the glory 00:09:05.459 --> 00:09:06.939 that is to be revealed to us. 00:09:07.840 --> 00:09:08.799 Many commentators, 00:09:08.919 --> 00:09:13.220 I've got just a stack of commentaries on Romans, 00:09:13.220 --> 00:09:15.279 and many of them suggest that in verse 18, 00:09:15.279 --> 00:09:18.179 Paul places the suffering of this present time 00:09:18.179 --> 00:09:19.620 on one side of a scale, 00:09:19.860 --> 00:09:22.000 and the glory that is to be revealed to us 00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:23.519 on the other side of the scale, 00:09:23.860 --> 00:09:26.459 to find that that scale tips dramatically 00:09:26.459 --> 00:09:27.759 for the latter. 00:09:28.860 --> 00:09:30.019 And their point stands. 00:09:30.120 --> 00:09:31.679 They're not wrong in saying it, 00:09:31.740 --> 00:09:33.819 but I want to suggest that even further, 00:09:33.980 --> 00:09:35.120 even higher than that, 00:09:35.439 --> 00:09:36.360 that what Paul is stating 00:09:36.360 --> 00:09:38.339 is that it isn't even worth the effort 00:09:38.339 --> 00:09:40.439 of going through the exercise. 00:09:40.440 --> 00:09:42.900 He's saying so clearly 00:09:42.900 --> 00:09:45.480 you need not set these things on a scale. 00:09:45.480 --> 00:09:47.420 The glory that is to be revealed to us 00:09:47.420 --> 00:09:49.660 so vastly outweighs 00:09:49.660 --> 00:09:51.600 the sufferings of this present time 00:09:51.600 --> 00:09:54.860 that they are not worth comparing. 00:09:55.700 --> 00:09:57.300 Don't take any of our time 00:09:57.300 --> 00:09:59.640 to even consider which one 00:09:59.640 -->
