protest, let me say this very clearly. 00:07:20.800 --> 00:07:25.040 This is not a demand for more money. 00:07:25.040 --> 00:07:30.540 And this is not a desire to make anybody feel guilty. 00:07:30.540 --> 00:07:31.140 Okay? 00:07:31.140 --> 00:07:32.040 So do you hear that? 00:07:32.040 --> 00:07:37.200 It is not a demand for money, and it is not to see anybody feel guilty. as a church, we have been able to give. 00:07:48.399 --> 00:07:54.480 Not only have we been able to give, but giving has increased when the economy has been going down. 00:07:54.579 --> 00:07:56.699 You can have a look at the sheet and you will see that. 00:07:57.280 --> 00:08:03.899 At the end of last year, we managed to balance out at a time when businesses are going bust. 00:08:03.899 --> 00:08:13.199 And not only have we been able to give week by week or month by month, but we've been able to give as certain needs have arisen, 00:08:13.379 --> 00:08:18.839 such as many who is going to Korea or to the work of compassion. 00:08:19.819 --> 00:08:24.639 People are and people do give despite tough times. 00:08:24.779 --> 00:08:27.299 So I want to recognize that. 00:08:27.300 --> 00:08:34.720 Second, on a surface reading of this text, we find ourselves in different circumstances. 00:08:36.240 --> 00:08:38.899 Paul knew this very well in verse 12. 00:08:40.039 --> 00:08:40.639 He says, 00:08:40.740 --> 00:08:46.419 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. 00:08:47.320 --> 00:08:52.200 So each person here and every family represented goes through different seasons. 00:08:52.200 --> 00:08:54.519 Sometimes we're people who are in need, 00:08:54.519 --> 00:08:57.399 and sometimes we are people who have plenty. 00:08:57.960 --> 00:09:00.000 We're all in different circumstances, 00:09:00.539 --> 00:09:03.840 and therefore we have to respond accordingly. 00:09:05.179 --> 00:09:11.919 So this is not an attempt for me to get myself a white suit and some nice gold rings and a nice gold necklace, 00:09:12.319 --> 00:09:14.819 get myself on the God channel and say, 00:09:14.819 --> 00:09:20.199 sow those seeds of financial giving and the Lord is going to bless you richly. 00:09:21.059 --> 00:09:22.220 It's not about that at all. 00:09:22.220 --> 00:09:31.040 So our aim this morning is to see if our attitude and our approach to giving is in line with what God has to say. 00:09:31.700 --> 00:09:37.860 Is our attitude and our approach to giving in line with what God has to say? 00:09:38.600 --> 00:09:43.120 And to do that, we're going to look at these closing comments in Philippians chapter 4, 00:09:43.120 --> 00:09:49.560 this letter to the church in Philippi to help us be clear about giving. 00:09:49.559 --> 00:09:54.399 So four things we're going to look at about giving. 00:09:54.659 --> 00:09:58.459 And if you pay attention, you might even hear me say, 00:09:58.839 --> 00:10:00.599 we don't want your money. 00:10:01.500 --> 00:10:02.679 So pay attention. 00:10:04.159 --> 00:10:09.359 So the first one, partnership in the gospel of Christ. 00:10:09.599 --> 00:10:12.619 Giving is about our partnership in the gospel of Christ. 00:10:12.620 --> 00:10:17.120 Look at chapter 1 of Philippians, verse 3. 00:10:22.820 --> 00:10:26.480 I thank my God every time I remember you. 00:10:27.060 --> 00:10:31.139 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy. 00:10:32.539 --> 00:10:34.480 Why is he thankful and why is he joyful? 00:10:34.480 --> 00:10:41.080 Verse 5, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. 00:10:41.080 --> 00:10:49.660 In business terms, partnership simply means a commitment to a shared vision or a joint venture. 00:10:50.759 --> 00:10:56.460 Now I think that helps us understand the partnership between Paul and this church at Philippi. 00:10:56.660 --> 00:11:01.560 They both have a commitment to a shared vision, a joint venture. 00:11:01.559 --> 00:11:10.899 They want to see the gospel, the good news about Jesus Christ, go to every nation and every people group in the world. 00:11:11.059 --> 00:11:12.000 That's their vision. 00:11:12.879 --> 00:11:17.739 They are partners in this gospel to see it go across the world. 00:11:18.819 --> 00:11:24.099 Now the church's commitment to this vision is seen in their sacrificial giving. 00:11:24.799 --> 00:11:25.979 In two ways. 00:11:26.119 --> 00:11:27.959 Firstly, in the presence. 00:11:27.960 --> 00:11:32.740 So as Paul is writing this letter, he's actually in prison. 00:11:32.900 --> 00:11:34.920 So look at chapter 1, verse 12. 00:11:37.080 --> 00:11:37.759 He says, 00:11:37.759 --> 00:12:06.639 So even though he's in prison, the gospel is going. 00:12:06.639 --> 00:12:10.240 But how did they partner Paul when he was in prison? 00:12:10.939 --> 00:12:12.980 Well, look at chapter 2, verse 25. 00:12:14.539 --> 00:12:15.980 And we get the answer. 00:12:17.220 --> 00:12:18.799 Chapter 2, verse 25. 00:12:21.199 --> 00:12:21.960 He says, 00:12:21.960 --> 00:12:38.940 So here's Paul in prison. 00:12:38.940 --> 00:12:40.280 How did they partner him? 00:12:40.280 --> 00:12:47.920 By sending one of their own people, Epaphroditus from their own church, to go to where Paul was to take care of his needs. 00:12:48.740 --> 00:12:54.400 And as a result of this partnership, the gospel continued to advance, even though he was in prison. 00:12:54.399 --> 00:12:59.899 But not only did they give people to Paul, they also gave gifts. 00:13:00.259 --> 00:13:01.480 Look at verse 29. 00:13:02.819 --> 00:13:03.620 Chapter 2. 00:13:03.699 --> 00:13:04.079 He says, 00:13:04.080 --> 00:13:22.180 So he's talking here about the fact that the church had sent a financial gift. 00:13:22.179 --> 00:13:24.159 That was as much as they could give. 00:13:25.199 --> 00:13:27.979 And because there was no electronic banking in those days, 00:13:28.299 --> 00:13:32.419 Epaphroditus was the guy who was going to bring that gift to the church. 00:13:32.799 --> 00:13:33.739 To Paul, rather. 00:13:33.859 --> 00:13:34.419 In prison. 00:13:35.139 --> 00:13:38.919 And he was going to go along and take care of his needs. 00:13:38.919 --> 00:13:45.559 So in response to their giving, Paul could say in chapter 4, verse 10. 00:13:47.559 --> 00:13:48.259 He can say, 00:13:48.500 --> 00:13:53.699 I rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last you have renewed your concern for me. 00:13:54.439 --> 00:14:00.579 Indeed, you have been concerned, but you had no moved off from Philippi, 00:15:12.840 --> 00:15:15.679 and he went off down to a town called Thessalonica, 00:15:16.320 --> 00:15:18.360 where he continued to preach the gospel 00:15:18.360 --> 00:15:20.720 and start new churches. 00:15:21.720 --> 00:15:22.639 And amazingly, 00:15:22.960 --> 00:15:24.639 this new church in Philippi, 00:15:25.019 --> 00:15:26.600 these baby new Christians, 00:15:26.600 --> 00:15:29.840 as Paul moved away from that church, 00:15:30.200 --> 00:15:31.800 they were the first church 00:15:31.800 --> 00:15:33.279 to support him 00:15:33.279 --> 00:15:34.620 and to help him 00:15:34.620 --> 00:15:36.639 in his church planting work. 00:15:37.000 --> 00:15:38.019 So verse 16, 00:15:38.340 --> 00:15:38.779 he says, 00:15:38.860 --> 00:15:40.379 when I was in
