up and everything. 00:00:40.799 --> 00:00:49.219 I want us to turn our Bibles to the Gospel of Luke as we just had our Scripture reading in Luke chapter 17. 00:00:49.219 --> 00:01:04.519 What we have here is we'll be going over the unprofitable servants from verses 7 through 10 in the Gospel of Luke chapter 17. 00:01:04.519 --> 00:01:14.979 In order for us to even begin to understand this very heavy, it's simple but yet it's heavy, parable. 00:01:14.980 --> 00:01:25.859 I want us to turn there and start in verse 17 here where we see in the first two verses where Christ is saying to his disciples, right? 00:01:26.200 --> 00:01:30.280 Talking about the temptations that they are sure to come, right? 00:01:30.280 --> 00:01:32.859 Woe to the one through who they come. 00:01:32.920 --> 00:01:37.620 It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and cast into the sea. 00:01:37.700 --> 00:01:40.680 That's very, very harsh language we're seeing. 00:01:40.799 --> 00:01:45.299 But it's a warning from Christ against causing these little ones to stumble. 00:01:45.299 --> 00:01:49.659 And this is found after the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. 00:01:49.780 --> 00:01:55.519 And it's very important for us to consider the context of what is going on here. 00:01:55.659 --> 00:02:02.120 That the rich man's sin was making an idol out of money. 00:02:02.659 --> 00:02:07.879 And that's something that was very common back then and it is still common even now. 00:02:07.879 --> 00:02:16.799 That there are people who they will idolize riches, fame, things that are outside of the Lord. 00:02:17.659 --> 00:02:19.519 We have to consider this. 00:02:20.219 --> 00:02:23.139 It goes on then into verses 3 and 4, right? 00:02:23.219 --> 00:02:24.400 Pay attention to yourself. 00:02:24.579 --> 00:02:26.259 If your brother sins, rebuke him. 00:02:26.460 --> 00:02:28.300 And if he repents, forgive him. 00:02:28.479 --> 00:02:33.620 And if he sins 00:02:46.920 --> 00:02:51.819 But it's showing that when there is wrong that is being done, there's the call for repentance. 00:02:52.080 --> 00:02:54.200 There's the call for speaking to that. 00:02:55.379 --> 00:02:58.520 Forgive as you have been forgiven, in other words. 00:02:59.460 --> 00:03:06.159 Which then is leading us into 5 and 6 as it's kind of paving the way here where the apostles are saying to the Lord, 00:03:06.180 --> 00:03:07.420 increase our faith. 00:03:08.439 --> 00:03:14.040 And the Lord said, if you add faith like the grain of a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 00:03:14.180 --> 00:03:18.659 be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it would obey you. 00:03:19.460 --> 00:03:23.840 And that leads us now to this parable of the unworthy servants. 00:03:23.840 --> 00:03:34.340 Where we start off where it's saying, will any of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in the field, 00:03:34.819 --> 00:03:37.520 come at once and recline at the table. 00:03:38.199 --> 00:03:40.599 It's talking about the return of servants. 00:03:40.599 --> 00:03:46.479 It's now very commonly in scripture and the biblical culture back then. 00:03:47.060 --> 00:03:53.819 The plowing of the field and the tending to the sheep was the most common duty that was expected from a servant. 00:03:53.819 --> 00:03:56.699 And so it's very interesting. 00:03:56.859 --> 00:03:58.919 We see plowing and shepherding, right? 00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:02.139 The breaking the hard ground, the soil as it were. 00:04:02.500 --> 00:04:07.699 And of course, shepherding would be caring for and guiding the flock. 00:04:07.699 --> 00:04:10.099 So we see that there right away. 00:04:10.819 --> 00:04:16.899 It's important for us to see these are a couple of things that were common for servants to have. 00:04:17.959 --> 00:04:19.959 Leading into verse 8 then, 00:04:21.539 --> 00:04:23.819 will he not rather say to him, 00:04:24.620 --> 00:04:31.839 prepare supper for me and dress properly and serve me while I eat and drink and afterward you will eat and drink? 00:04:31.939 --> 00:04:33.000 We'll just finish this off. 00:04:33.560 --> 00:04:36.740 Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? 00:04:36.740 --> 00:04:40.000 So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, 00:04:40.180 --> 00:04:41.759 say we are unworthy servants. 00:04:42.060 --> 00:04:44.680 We have only done what was our duty. 00:04:45.180 --> 00:04:48.920 It's kind of a strange parable if you think about it. 00:04:49.660 --> 00:04:52.460 Well, when we're going back to verse 8, 00:04:53.240 --> 00:04:54.720 verse 7 and verse 8, 00:04:55.480 --> 00:04:58.920 the servant, he is plowing, he is keeping the sheep. 00:05:00.220 --> 00:05:03.199 This idea of reclining at a table, 00:05:03.319 --> 00:05:05.319 you see this a few times in scripture. 00:05:05.319 --> 00:05:07.240 When you first read it, 00:05:07.279 --> 00:05:07.839 you think, okay, 00:05:07.939 --> 00:05:08.560 the guy's just, 00:05:08.759 --> 00:05:10.420 he's had a hard day at work. 00:05:11.019 --> 00:05:12.300 He wants to sit down. 00:05:12.719 --> 00:05:15.480 He wants to have some water. 00:05:15.920 --> 00:05:17.899 He wants to have a break. 00:05:18.759 --> 00:05:20.959 That's not what's being explained here. 00:05:21.019 --> 00:05:25.560 The reclining at the table is speaking of a place of honor. 00:05:25.560 --> 00:05:28.699 Now, when you read it on the surface, 00:05:28.939 --> 00:05:30.980 you get one understanding, 00:05:31.139 --> 00:05:36.879 but culturally, reclining at the table is more of the place of honor 00:05:36.879 --> 00:05:39.680 where you are being served 00:05:39.680 --> 00:05:42.899 rather than just simply sitting in a chair 00:05:42.899 --> 00:05:45.579 or sitting on the couch after a hard day's work. 00:05:45.639 --> 00:05:47.620 So that's very important for us to see. 00:05:47.620 --> 00:05:50.160 Then, of course, 00:05:50.860 --> 00:05:53.899 yeah, it says honor, leisure. 00:05:54.139 --> 00:05:57.120 It's found in the gospel of Luke chapter 12. 00:05:57.199 --> 00:05:58.100 We're not going to turn there. 00:05:58.579 --> 00:06:01.600 12, 37 and John 13, 23. 00:06:02.699 --> 00:06:06.860 So it's saying that there is still work that needs to be done 00:06:06.860 --> 00:06:10.160 in the respect that you as a servant 00:06:10.160 --> 00:06:14.000 are not being placed in a position of honor. 00:06:14.000 --> 00:06:16.040 That's what's being said here. 00:06:17.420 --> 00:06:23.300 Now, before the servant eats, 00:06:23.480 --> 00:06:25.939 he must serve the master, right? 00:06:25.980 --> 00:06:27.660 That's what we're seeing in verse 8. 00:07:17.339 in a modern sort of concept that happens. 00:07:17.680 --> 00:07:19.859 Well, we don't necessarily have slaves 00:07:19.859 --> 00:07:21.039 or servants nowadays, 00:07:21.039 --> 00:07:22.779 or at least I hope you don't. 00:07:23.620 --> 00:07:26.279 But it's important for us to at least understand 00:07:26.279 --> 00:07:28.779 that back then that was more common 00:07:28.779 --> 00:07:30.439 in the given culture. 00:07:31.439 --> 00:07:34.560 And so what he's saying here 00:07:34.560 --> 00:07:39.500 is that the master's not going to give extra favor 00:07:39.500 --> 00:07:42.879 for doing what's already meant to be done. 00:07:43.120 --> 00:07:46.579 It's kind of like a similar rendering, 00:07:46.759 --> 00:07:49.139 a similar theme that we can see would be 00:07:49.139 --> 00:07:52.199 if you have a job and you have your employer 00:07:52.199 --> 00:07:55.040 and you're expected to do certain things, 00:07:55.579 --> 00:07:58.379 well, it's nice to get a pat on the back, 00:07:58.500 --> 00:08:01.180 but when you're doing what's already expected of you, 00:08:01.240 --> 00:08:02.959 you should see it through to the end, right? 00:08:02.959 --> 00:08:04.959 You should complete your job at hand. 00:08:05.039 --> 00:08:07.620 That's kind of the only modern parallel 00:08:07.620 --> 00:08:08.979 that we could see nowadays 00:08:08.979 --> 00:08:13.500 because, again, we don't have servants and slaves anymore, 00:08:13.500 --> 00:08:15.599 so it's a little hard for us to understand. 00:08:17.180 --> 00:08:19.519 And then, of course, at verse 10, 00:08:19.699 --> 00:08:21.459 it closes off, 00:08:21.519 --> 00:08:24.759 so you also, when you have done all your commanded, 00:08:24.919 --> 00:08:26.419 say we are unworthy servants, series I did on Philemon, 00:08:45.500 --> 00:08:46.919 you had Onesimus, 00:08:47.679 --> 00:08:48.740 who was someone, 00:08:48.940 --> 00:08:52.399 his name means useless or useful. 00:08:52.720 --> 00:08:54.039 He was once useless, 00:08:54.039 --> 00:08:56.259 and he became useful. 00:08:56.259 --> 00:08:58.579 It's very similar language in that, 00:08:59.120 --> 00:09:01.480 that we are unprofitable, right? 00:09:01.599 --> 00:09:06.519 So it's similar to what we would find in Philemon. 00:09:07.719 --> 00:09:11.259 And so, it's the wordplay. 00:09:12.480 --> 00:09:13.779 This parable, then, 00:09:15.039 --> 00:09:17.279 even though it may be hard for us to understand, 00:09:17.459 --> 00:09:20.959 is very similar when we start connecting the dots 00:09:20.960 -->
