Barnabas. 00:05:03.240 --> 00:05:04.879 He took Silas with him. 00:05:05.220 --> 00:05:07.379 He took Timothy with him. 00:05:07.780 --> 00:05:09.360 And he went to Philippi. 00:05:09.980 --> 00:05:17.120 He saw some wonderful fruit in being, as he shared the gospel, as he evangelized. 00:05:17.379 --> 00:05:18.660 And he was tossed in prison. 00:05:19.460 --> 00:05:25.360 And even still in that situation, the Lord did something miraculous. 00:05:25.360 --> 00:05:27.819 People continued to come to faith. 00:05:27.960 --> 00:05:36.080 And now, as Paul and company continue with the second missionary journey, they find themselves in Macedonia. 00:05:36.280 --> 00:05:38.280 And they're heading to the capital, Thessalonica. 00:05:39.420 --> 00:05:40.060 Interesting. 00:05:40.060 --> 00:05:47.819 The population historians figure, and it's anywhere from 50,000 to 200,000. 00:05:47.899 --> 00:05:49.100 I mean, that's a pretty big spread. 00:05:51.280 --> 00:05:55.720 Regardless if it's on the lower end or the higher end, it's a very significant city. 00:05:55.959 --> 00:06:00.100 It's a city that is self-governed. 00:06:00.139 --> 00:06:01.079 So, it's a free city. 00:06:01.379 --> 00:06:04.600 So, even though they have connections with Rome, they are self-governed. 00:06:05.120 --> 00:06:06.500 They're an economic hub. 00:06:06.500 --> 00:06:09.220 They are a cultural hub. 00:06:09.600 --> 00:06:14.500 If you're going to spread the gospel in Macedonia, in this region, it's a good spot to go to. 00:06:15.620 --> 00:06:19.759 There'll be the neighboring cities and towns and villages that will frequent there. 00:06:19.939 --> 00:06:20.899 Ideas will spread. 00:06:21.500 --> 00:06:26.240 It's a critical juncture for this missionary journey. 00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:31.000 And as Paul's normal practice, he goes to the local synagogue. 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:36.660 He, it's a bit of a beachhead for him in a new city. 00:06:37.040 --> rather, he reasoned with them from the scriptures. 00:07:17.459 --> 00:07:40.479 So, Paul does two things. 00:07:40.480 --> 00:07:47.620 He explains and he proves from the scriptures that the prophesied Messiah had to suffer. 00:07:49.020 --> 00:07:55.480 Leading up to the first century, there was many different versions of what the Messiah would do. 00:07:55.600 --> 00:08:02.840 Some of them derived from the biblical case of the Messiah, but others, it was like extra biblical stuff. 00:08:03.420 --> 00:08:07.980 The Messiah would be somebody who would lead God's people against Rome. 00:08:07.980 --> 00:08:10.240 The Messiah would be a miracle worker. 00:08:10.819 --> 00:08:12.540 There's different views of the Messiah. 00:08:12.780 --> 00:08:16.540 Some of them, all of them, kind of maybe touch on some truths. 00:08:17.140 --> 00:08:19.060 But, by and large, there was no consensus. 00:08:19.860 --> 00:08:30.600 And this idea that the Messiah would suffer seemed to be fairly foreign from the Judaic understanding of the biblical Messiah. 00:08:30.600 --> 00:08:37.440 So, the Apostle Paul, likely he was there for longer than three weeks. 00:08:37.560 --> 00:08:39.220 But here it says that he was there for three weeks. 00:08:39.460 --> 00:08:43.480 We figure he was there for longer because in one of his letters to the Thessalonians, 00:08:43.600 --> 00:08:46.840 there's a reference that he was there much longer than three weeks. 00:08:46.940 --> 00:08:53.440 But from Luke, who records Acts in chapter 17 here, there's three weeks that he's covering. 00:08:53.440 --> 00:08:55.880 And he is reasoning from the scriptures. 00:08:56.160 --> 00:09:02.280 And almost certainly, Paul would have referenced Deuteronomy 21. 00:09:03.700 --> 00:09:09.240 He would have certainly referenced parts of the Psalter, like Psalm 2 or Psalm 16. 00:09:10.100 --> 00:09:11.100 Maybe Psalm 110. 00:09:11.420 --> 00:09:17.540 And of course, he would refer to the say this guy, he says that guy, she says that guy. 00:11:38.340 --> 00:11:38.939 It doesn't matter. 00:11:38.940 --> 00:11:45.640 But at the core of what Paul is proving and explaining 00:11:45.640 --> 00:11:48.640 is that Jesus rose from the dead. 00:11:50.220 --> 00:11:53.280 Not the idea of Jesus rising from the dead, 00:11:53.820 --> 00:11:58.880 but that Jesus physically, really, in a specific location, 00:11:59.500 --> 00:12:01.420 at a real time and point in history, 00:12:01.840 --> 00:12:05.700 at the hands of real people, died and rose again afterwards. 00:12:05.700 --> 00:12:10.320 And certainly he would have referenced the crowds that witnessed 00:12:10.320 --> 00:12:15.900 both the ministry of Jesus, the passion of Jesus, 00:12:16.140 --> 00:12:18.140 and Jesus
