I love them. 00:00:24.219 --> 00:00:26.440 They were a style of painters in the 19th century. 00:00:26.980 --> 00:00:28.560 And Monet was one of my heroes. 00:00:28.559 --> 00:00:32.579 And I remember going to the National Gallery for the first time as a teenager. 00:00:33.280 --> 00:00:35.939 And they have a room full of Monet paintings. 00:00:36.839 --> 00:00:43.759 And I remember when I first entered that, and I saw a real-life Monet close-up. 00:00:44.519 --> 00:00:46.219 And I was just blown away. 00:00:47.179 --> 00:00:51.840 I felt this, I kind of felt it in my stomach. see all the details. 00:01:25.019 --> 00:01:32.280 How he painted the brushstrokes, the subtlety of colour, the contrast, the shape, the light. 00:01:32.280 --> 00:01:35.859 You actually see how he's work in salvation. 00:01:45.799 --> 00:01:56.979 If salvation is the artwork, if God has done work in this world, a masterpiece, and it's called The Salvation of Sinners, 00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:02.299 then that masterpiece tells us what God is like. 00:02:02.299 --> 00:02:09.460 You can study that painting, look up close, and see exactly how he painted it, 00:02:09.680 --> 00:02:13.359 and then know of the genius and the character of God. 00:02:14.919 --> 00:02:16.599 And that's what I want us to do tonight. 00:02:16.939 --> 00:02:23.460 I want us to stand right by the masterpiece and see just how exactly God saves us. 00:02:24.460 --> 00:02:27.180 I want us to see the brushstrokes of salvation. 00:02:28.860 --> 00:02:31.520 And these two verses we're looking at tonight, verses 8 and 9, 00:02:31.879 --> 00:02:33.879 this is the up close of the masterpiece. 00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:37.680 This is the very heart of Christianity. 00:02:38.540 --> 00:02:41.439 I've said before that Ephesians 2, 1 to 10, 00:02:41.700 --> 00:02:44.120 is quite possibly the best summary of the gospel. 00:02:45.700 --> 00:02:48.159 Well, these verses are the summary of the summary. 00:02:48.340 --> 00:02:49.240 This is the heart. 00:02:49.240 --> 00:02:52.680 If you want to memorise a verse about the gospel, verse 8 would probably be it. 00:02:52.680 --> 00:02:57.200 By grace, you have been saved through faith. 00:02:59.080 --> 00:03:02.659 In the gospels, Jesus speaks of weightier matters of the law. 00:03:03.480 --> 00:03:05.780 So all the law, all the Bible is important. 00:03:06.280 --> 00:03:08.140 There isn't a word you can take out of it. 00:03:08.700 --> 00:03:10.159 But some things are weightier. 00:03:10.900 --> 00:03:15.379 Some things in the Bible matter, and some really, really matter. 00:03:16.480 --> 00:03:19.060 And these verses we have in front of us, 00:03:19.480 --> 00:03:21.300 these are some of the heaviest. 00:03:21.300 --> 00:03:25.600 If you could carry these verses in your pocket, you would hit the deck. 00:03:27.300 --> 00:03:29.420 And so we need to stand up close to these verses. 00:03:29.580 --> 00:03:32.360 And I want us to just to take in the brushstrokes. 00:03:33.740 --> 00:03:34.900 And this is for two reasons. 00:03:35.040 --> 00:03:40.160 Firstly, because this verse is about how we are saved. 00:03:41.320 --> 00:03:43.460 How the dead are raised to life. 00:03:43.540 --> 00:03:46.000 How this dark world can be rescued. 00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:50.759 So if you take this verse away, if you ignore this painting, 00:03:51.000 --> 00:03:55.180 if you compromise on this, then salvation itself is at stake. 00:03:57.060 --> 00:03:59.379 But secondly, and this is an even bigger reason, 00:03:59.639 --> 00:04:05.879 we need an up close of this painting because this verse tells us about the artist. 00:04:05.879 --> 00:04:10.840 So do you remember from this morning the goal of why God is saving sinners? 00:04:11.439 --> 00:04:15.659 What is the purpose behind why anyone here is raised from the dead? 00:04:15.879 --> 00:04:16.939 Look back to verse 7. 00:04:18.000 --> 00:04:22.899 So that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace. 00:04:22.899 --> 00:04:25.759 God is saving people. 00:04:25.899 --> 00:04:26.620 He's saved you. 00:04:26.859 --> 00:04:33.919 He's painted this canvas in this way to show the world who he really is. 00:04:34.779 --> 00:04:37.620 To show that he is gracious. 00:04:39.379 --> 00:04:47.479 The painting of salvation even exists at all so that the world the first time, Paul even kind of interrupts his own thought, doesn't he? 00:06:33.260 --> 00:06:39.260 As he's telling us God is rich in mercy, even when we were dead, God made us alive together with pointing out? 00:07:14.580 --> 00:07:16.120 What is it about salvation? 00:07:16.120 --> 00:07:18.680 Well, how does this verse begin? 00:07:19.959 --> 00:07:22.759 By grace you have been saved. 00:07:24.600 --> 00:07:28.720 We're being told all this, all your salvation, all your being made alive from the dead, 00:07:28.800 --> 00:07:34.399 you're being raised up, you're being seated in
