What is he like? Which are some great questions to be asking ourselves. 00:00:31.400 --> 00:00:37.939 If those are your questions, let me encourage you to tune in to what this passage is telling us, what God is saying to us in his word, 00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:44.519 because these verses will get us right to the heart of who God is and what he is like. 00:00:45.640 --> 00:00:53.859 Now, to get us into this, let me tell you about a little conversation that happened around the Shanks family dinner table this week. 00:00:53.859 --> 00:00:56.780 I came home on Monday and Alex had prepared a lovely roast chicken. 00:00:56.960 --> 00:01:01.840 complete with the trimmings. It was lovely. We were there, the four of us, our two little girls. 00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:11.719 We were tucking into this meal and Chloe, our four-year-old, she turns to us out of the blue and she asks us, 00:01:12.120 --> 00:01:14.900 how did the chicken get on my plate? 00:01:17.780 --> 00:01:20.900 So the two of us slightly panicked. We just say the first thing that comes into our minds. 00:01:20.900 --> 00:01:22.200 We say, well, we got it from Tesco. 00:01:22.200 --> 00:01:27.780 Eating a little bit more. She's not quite having it. 00:01:27.840 --> 00:01:32.140 She asks us again, yeah, but how did the chicken get on my plate? 00:01:33.740 --> 00:01:36.240 And so we think, right, we'll need to take the step one further. 00:01:36.400 --> 00:01:41.520 And we say to her, well, the farmer, he looked after the chicken on the farm with all the other chickens. 00:01:41.579 --> 00:01:44.540 And then he packaged the chicken and he sent it off to Tesco. 00:01:44.540 --> 00:01:46.540 And we bought it from Tesco. Now we're eating it. 00:01:47.900 --> 00:01:50.300 And it seemed to satisfy her for about 30 seconds. 00:01:50.400 --> 00:01:53.620 And once again, she asks once again, yeah, but how? 00:01:54.920 --> 00:01:56.880 How did the chicken get on my plate? 00:01:56.879 --> 00:02:03.519 And we realized, the two of us, that we're just going to have to tell her how the chicken got on her plate. 00:02:04.739 --> 00:02:10.699 Because what was true for the carrot on her plate, and was true for the green bean on her plate, 00:02:11.539 --> 00:02:14.639 and was true for the potato on her plate, was true for the chicken on her plate, 00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:17.379 that the chicken had to die. 00:02:19.460 --> 00:02:21.800 Because if the chicken didn't die, then we couldn't eat. 00:02:21.800 --> 00:02:26.740 And if we don't eat, then we don't live. 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:33.620 So quite simply, the chicken died so that we can live. 00:02:35.980 --> 00:02:39.800 And Isaiah 52 and 53, friends, if you're looking for a theme, 00:02:39.880 --> 00:02:42.640 if you're looking for a big idea that will take you through this passage, 00:02:43.220 --> 00:02:51.060 this glorious truth is that Jesus Christ died so that we can live. 00:02:52.800 --> 00:02:54.420 This is the message of these verses. 00:02:54.640 --> 00:02:57.700 He died so that we can live. 00:02:59.200 --> 00:03:02.260 Now, if you've got them there, verse 13, God thunders in here. 00:03:02.920 --> 00:03:06.100 The last of these servant songs, we've been looking at them over the past few weeks, 00:03:06.200 --> 00:03:09.980 we've reached the last one, probably the thickest one, 00:03:10.520 --> 00:03:15.000 the most theological rich, the one that gets us right to the heart of this servant, 00:03:15.080 --> 00:03:16.080 who he is and what he will do. 00:03:16.140 --> 00:03:18.480 And God says, you see him thunder in verse 13, he says, 00:03:18.479 --> 00:03:19.239 Behold my servant. 00:03:20.659 --> 00:03:21.359 Look at him. 00:03:21.419 --> 00:03:22.780 In other words, have a look at him. 00:03:22.939 --> 00:03:23.979 See who he is. 00:03:25.599 --> 00:03:26.739 Let me tell you about him. 00:03:27.639 --> 00:03:28.879 Let me tell you what he will do. 00:03:28.979 --> 00:03:30.679 Let me tell you what his life will be like. 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:35.339 And most importantly, let me tell you what it will mean for you. 00:03:35.340 --> 00:03:40.439 Because when you get that, when you understand who this Savior is, 00:03:40.520 --> 00:03:42.520 Jesus Christ, my servant, the one that I will send, 00:03:43.140 --> 00:03:46.319 it will quite simply send you to your knees and it will blow your mind. 00:03:46.319 --> 00:03:52.079 But let me just get us into Isaiah. 00:03:52.180 --> 00:03:53.900 Remember, these are not just isolated words. 00:03:54.019 --> 00:03:55.979 These are words that are written in a specific time, 00:03:56.099 --> 00:03:58.139 written to a specific people, written for all people, 00:03:58.219 --> 00:03:59.699 but written in a specific time. 00:04:00.079 --> 00:04:01.419 They're written in the book of Isaiah. 00:04:02.680 --> 00:04:04.659 And we've been journeying through this little section 00:04:04.659 --> 00:04:09.680 that started at chapter 40 and kind of runs through right to the end of chapter 55 00:04:09.680 --> 00:04:13.439 as God speaks to a generation who will find themselves in exile. 00:04:13.439 --> 00:04:20.360 And the thing about these chapters is that there is a massive tension in the text. 00:04:21.759 --> 00:04:23.480 Go home and check it out for yourselves. 00:04:23.560 --> 00:04:25.800 You may notice it as we've walked through it over the past few weeks. 00:04:25.879 --> 00:04:30.279 There's a tension in the text because God has been making some really, 00:04:30.439 --> 00:04:33.920 really big promises, massive promises. 00:04:35.879 --> 00:04:39.939 Promises about what he will do for his people who will soon find themselves in exile 00:04:39.939 --> 00:04:43.759 and we'll be sitting there thinking the game's up, it's over for us. 00:04:44.480 --> 00:04:45.259 Not going to hope. 00:04:46.079 --> 00:04:47.000 We're finished. 00:04:49.019 --> 00:04:50.439 God's making some big promises. 00:04:50.660 --> 00:04:51.980 Let's just pick out a few of these. 00:04:52.079 --> 00:04:55.759 Big promises that he will pardon their iniquity. 00:04:57.379 --> 00:04:58.959 That he will rescue them. 00:05:00.100 --> 00:05:01.379 That he will forgive them. 00:05:01.459 --> 00:05:06.800 And he will somehow make a way that their sins will be remembered no more in his sight. 00:05:06.899 --> 00:05:08.779 He will deal with the sin of his people. 00:05:08.779 --> 00:05:12.219 He will make them guiltless before any accuser. 00:05:13.439 --> 00:05:17.599 That he will glorify them in that he will so radically change them. 00:05:18.359 --> 00:05:23.719 That somehow they will now turn, that their lives will now reflect something of his greatness to the watching world. 00:05:24.119 --> 00:05:27.439 And promises that God is so lovingly committed to 00:05:27.439 --> 00:05:36.299 that he would describe himself as having the names of his people inscribed in the palms of his hands. 00:05:36.299 --> 00:05:38.259 Now think about that imagery for a second. 00:05:38.779 --> 00:05:43.359 The names of his people inscribed on the palms of his hands. 00:05:43.439 --> 00:05:49.159 Of course words that won't just be metaphorical words that will be real with the coming of Jesus Christ. 00:05:49.239 --> 00:05:50.919 You know when you go to Starbucks, what do they do? 00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:51.579 What's your name? 00:05:51.639 --> 00:05:54.979 I've had some tremendous spellings of Graham over the years, let me tell you. 00:05:55.279 --> 00:05:55.879 What do they do? 00:05:55.959 --> 00:05:57.419 They write your name on the side of a cup. 00:05:57.599 --> 00:05:59.219 It's meant to make you feel special, isn't it? 00:05:59.220 --> 00:06:05.800 God is saying to his people, I have got your names on the palms of my hand. 00:06:06.020 --> 00:06:11.680 That is how committed I am to showing you how much I love you, my faithfulness. 00:06:11.740 --> 00:06:12.220 Get that. 00:06:13.920 --> 00:06:19.820 And all these promises, the thing to see is that the people will not bring them about by themselves. 00:06:19.960 --> 00:06:21.300 There's zero chance of that happening. 00:06:21.300 --> 00:06:26.340 God says, I will make salvation spring up from the ground. 00:06:27.460 --> 00:06:29.079 In other words, this is 00:06:38.240 Marvelous words, marvelous promises. 00:06:38.379 --> 00:06:42.920 But as well as big promises, God's put his finger on some big, big problems. 00:06:42.920 --> 00:06:45.920 Problems that are true with his people. 00:06:46.699 --> 00:06:48.280 Problems that are true with the people of the world. 00:06:48.439 --> 00:06:50.300 Problems that we know are true in our own lives. 00:06:52.080 --> 00:06:53.340 Our blatant sin. 00:06:53.580 --> 00:06:56.560 The people's blatant sin against a holy God. 00:06:56.680 --> 00:06:58.900 Their refusal to acknowledge him and his ways. 00:06:59.139 --> 00:07:00.759 Their rebellion. 00:07:00.920 --> 00:07:02.560 The fact that they don't want to go God's way. 00:07:02.620 --> 00:07:03.780 They want to go their way. 00:07:04.639 --> 00:07:05.900 And their hypocrisy. 00:07:06.420 --> 00:07:09.920 And the injustice that is rife amongst them as a people. 00:07:09.920 --> 00:07:12.400 They're just disregarding how God has told them to live. How can he be both fully without compromising on either? 00:08:03.579 --> 00:08:04.879 How will he do that? 00:08:08.060 --> 00:08:21.139 If you're into your TV dramas, you'll know that the best in the business have got a wonderful way of building the tension in a plot to the point that the viewer is left thinking, how on earth is this one going to resolve itself? 00:08:21.139 --> 00:08:23.319 Have you ever thought that as you've watched the TV drama? 00:08:23.560 --> 00:08:25.159 How is this going to resolve itself? 00:08:25.979 --> 00:08:26.800 What's going to happen? 00:08:28.599 --> 00:08:30.839 And then all of a sudden that moment comes, doesn't it? 00:08:30.839 --> 00:08:32.519 When you see it, you get it. 00:08:32.580 --> 00:08:33.559 Oh, that's how it's happened. 00:08:33.559 00:08:47.919 Well, in these verses, God is saying, here is how I'm going to do it. 00:08:47.919 --> 00:08:55.659 And it centers on his servant who will die so that we can live. 00:08:56.299 --> 00:09:14.159 People write about the cross. 00:09:14.259 --> 00:09:15.099 People wear a cross. 00:09:15.219 --> 00:09:16.480 People get tattoos of the cross. 00:09:16.480 --> 00:09:19.759 I wonder if you've ever asked yourself, what is the big deal about the cross? 00:09:20.700 --> 00:09:22.860 It's the centerpiece of our church logo. 00:09:22.960 --> 00:09:24.259 I wonder if you've ever asked how God is going to do this. 00:10:31.039 --> 00:10:41.039 Isaiah has so carefully crafted this final servant song in such a way that our eyes are drawn to a central point that he's making about how God will do this. 00:10:41.039 --> 00:10:43.439 Think of this like a five-layer sandwich. 00:10:44.019 --> 00:10:47.740 There's five sections here, and the meat's in the middle. 00:10:49.480 --> 00:10:50.879 So here it is, okay? 00:10:51.919 --> 00:10:57.579 And the first and the fifth sections of this servant song, God preaches it. 00:10:58.439 --> 00:11:00.319 He says, this is what I'm going to do. 00:11:00.320 --> 00:11:07.260 And then as we move into the second and the fourth sections, we get the world that watched it. 00:11:07.820 --> 00:11:10.780 The world watches it and says, --> 00:12:29.759 And say to themselves, not only did we not see that coming, but when we saw it, when we saw him suspended on the cross, when we saw him see the descriptions marred and disfigured, It's an Old Testament priestly word, to sprinkle. 00:14:04.020 --> 00:14:05.900 These people would have known exactly what that meant. 00:14:06.660 --> 00:14:07.920 He's going to sprinkle people. --> 00:15:24.440 these are the things that are now true for us as a people. 00:15:26.420 --> 00:15:27.340 And on these truths, 00:15:27.400 --> 00:15:29.100 we're going to stand and build our lives. that is true for all those who have been in the sand. 00:15:44.879 --> 00:15:45.879 It's this kind of thing that is true for all those who have been in the sand. 00:15:45.879 --> 00:15:46.779 Line in the sand, 00:15:46.779 --> 00:15:48.500 moment in history, 00:15:48.740 --> 00:15:50.939 Jesus has justified us before a holy God. 00:15:51.019 --> 00:15:52.259 We are right with him. 00:15:54.519 --> but death will not be the end for him. 00:16:09.240 --> 00:16:11.000 And there will be life for him. 00:16:11.519 --> 00:16:15.959 And God will make sure that just as the world publicly saw his
