statements that David makes here, 00:09:33.779 --> 00:09:35.419 thinking that there's contradiction here, 00:09:35.480 --> 00:09:36.399 that it's just not true. 00:09:38.039 --> 00:09:39.360 We need to think for just a moment, 00:09:39.480 --> 00:09:40.500 what exactly is a proverb 00:09:40.500 --> 00:09:42.440 and how are we to process? 00:09:42.899 --> 00:09:43.820 A proverb is, 00:09:44.220 --> 00:09:45.120 it's really just a, 00:09:45.159 --> 00:09:47.279 it's a wise principle of life. 00:09:47.419 --> 00:09:49.399 It's wise principles of life and godliness. 00:09:49.860 --> 00:09:52.299 We might call them general rules of thumb. 00:09:53.159 --> 00:09:56.519 It's not saying that there are explicit guarantees 00:09:56.519 --> 00:09:57.899 in every situation, 00:09:58.019 --> 00:10:01.019 that there aren't exceptions that may come around. 00:10:01.620 --> 00:10:04.299 One of the key verses in the Psalm is verse 25. 00:10:04.620 --> 00:10:06.799 I've been young and now I'm old 00:10:06.799 --> 00:10:09.240 and I've not seen the Lord forsake the righteous. 00:10:09.399 --> 00:10:11.059 But then David throws in this one statement 00:10:11.059 --> 00:10:13.159 that you may stumble over just a little bit. 00:10:13.199 --> 00:10:13.439 He says, 00:10:13.679 --> 00:10:16.299 I've never actually seen even the children 00:10:16.299 --> 00:10:18.059 of the righteous begging for bread. 00:10:18.059 --> 00:10:20.959 We might come to that and say, 00:10:21.059 --> 00:10:22.959 well, that almost sounds like David is saying 00:10:22.959 --> 00:10:25.339 that if you really just have enough faith 00:10:25.339 --> 00:10:27.579 and you live the right way 00:10:27.579 --> 00:10:29.359 and you say your prayers at the end of the day, 00:10:29.439 --> 00:10:30.759 that you won't go through hardships, 00:10:30.959 --> 00:10:32.779 that your children won't suffer 00:10:32.779 --> 00:10:34.299 and won't struggle in any way. 00:10:34.500 --> 00:10:36.099 And that's when we need to understand 00:10:36.099 --> 00:10:37.379 exactly what he's doing here. 00:10:37.459 --> 00:10:39.119 These are proverbial statements. 00:10:39.279 --> 00:10:41.159 It's not saying that hardship doesn't come. 00:10:41.539 --> 00:10:42.459 Of course it does. 00:10:42.460 --> 00:10:45.980 The Psalm is clear that the righteous here 00:10:45.980 --> 00:10:48.519 are experiencing tremendous hardship. 00:10:49.639 --> 00:10:51.580 But what he's saying is that generally 00:10:51.580 --> 00:10:53.259 when we do what God says, 00:10:53.400 --> 00:10:56.980 we reap the consequences and blessings of obedience 00:10:56.980 --> 00:11:00.040 and of God's faithfulness in our lives. 00:11:00.100 --> 00:11:01.019 We need to get that right. 00:11:01.100 --> 00:11:02.180 This is a wisdom Psalm. 00:11:02.280 --> 00:11:04.259 This is what David is doing here. 00:11:04.320 --> 00:11:06.120 He's passing on wisdom for those of us 00:11:06.120 --> 00:11:08.879 who are trying to wrestle with wisdom 00:11:20.860 --> 00:11:23.179 on just such occasions. 00:11:24.620 --> 00:11:28.259 Time is a major feature in the wisdom 00:11:28.259 --> 00:11:29.419 that David conveys. 00:11:29.419 --> 00:11:31.840 He doesn't talk about time explicitly, 00:11:32.120 --> 00:11:33.940 but it's all woven throughout 00:11:33.940 --> 00:11:35.360 all of these proverbs here. 00:11:36.519 --> 00:11:38.840 He writes as an older man, for instance, 00:11:38.879 --> 00:11:42.580 he's an older man who's been around long enough 00:11:42.580 --> 00:11:45.639 to see how these things tend to play out.
