00:04:21.740 --> 00:04:25.800 Now, I don't recommend saying that to your spouse. 00:04:26.879 --> 00:04:33.040 And the category of threat versus promise is not just a one-liner from my grandfather. 00:04:33.600 --> 00:04:39.120 It is also a helpful category for us as we understand secrets. 00:04:39.660 --> 00:04:43.120 In other words, there are two kinds of secrets in this world. 00:04:43.120 --> 00:04:46.579 There are secrets that are threats, and there are secrets that are promises. 00:04:46.980 --> 00:04:48.519 There are secrets that shame. 00:04:48.819 --> 00:04:50.420 There are some that excite. 00:04:50.860 --> 00:04:53.500 There are secrets that you threaten people with. 00:04:54.100 --> 00:04:57.120 There are secrets that you promise to people. 00:04:57.420 --> 00:05:00.180 There are secrets you use to blackmail someone. 00:05:00.819 --> 00:05:03.680 There are secrets that you use to draw them in. 00:05:04.720 --> 00:05:10.019 It's important for us to understand those two types of secrets as we come to this passage. 00:05:10.439 --> 00:05:12.399 First of all, we have exciting secrets. 00:05:12.399 --> 00:05:17.199 These are secrets that are hidden with the purpose, the intent of being revealed. 00:05:17.579 --> 00:05:23.179 So I assume last month, you prepared some secrets for some people in your life. 00:05:23.259 --> 00:05:27.599 You bought them a Christmas gift, and you wrapped it so that it would be hidden. 00:05:28.879 --> 00:05:32.039 But it was meant as a secret to excite, right? 00:05:32.079 --> 00:05:37.379 There was a set time and day and hour when that secret was meant to be revealed. 00:05:37.799 --> 00:05:41.939 Same thing is true with the plots of new movies or TV shows or books. 00:05:41.939 --> 00:05:43.719 They are kept secret, right? 00:05:43.800 --> 00:05:49.360 Often by binding legal contracts so that they can be revealed on opening day. 00:05:50.120 --> 00:05:56.220 If you follow Disney+, you know that we were told Boba Fett is coming on December 29th. 00:05:56.480 --> 00:05:58.279 The secret is kept now. 00:05:58.399 --> 00:05:59.939 Things are concealed and wrapped up. 00:05:59.939 --> 00:06:03.740 You can only guess what is to come and it will be revealed. 00:06:04.540 --> 00:06:10.139 If you have ever written a will, you probably have not shown that to many people. 00:06:11.100 --> 00:06:20.680 And you know one day we will know who it is that you have blessed with your goods and who it's been withheld from. 00:06:20.680 --> 00:06:24.079 There's a time that is set for the secret to be revealed. 00:06:24.840 --> 00:06:27.639 So we have secrets that are exciting. 00:06:28.280 --> 00:06:31.079 We also have shameful secrets. 00:06:31.800 --> 00:06:34.060 Secrets that are meant to be hidden forever. 00:06:34.879 --> 00:06:38.220 These are the sort of secrets that you blackmail someone with. 00:06:38.780 --> 00:06:41.780 I'm probably going to butcher the pronunciation on this, 00:06:41.840 --> 00:06:44.939 but it's what's called the term from the Russian's Compromat. 00:06:44.939 --> 00:06:49.079 You gather this dirt on someone who's a politician or a businessman. 00:06:49.339 --> 00:06:53.439 You know you have the folder that's necessary to blackmail them 00:06:53.439 --> 00:06:57.019 and to get them to do what you want to do. 00:06:58.180 --> 00:07:02.139 It's just these two types of secrets in mind that we begin to understand 00:07:02.139 --> 00:07:05.180 what Jesus is telling us this morning here in this passage. 00:07:05.339 --> 00:07:08.120 Verse 21, he asks this rhetorical question. 00:07:08.120 --> 00:07:13.819 Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket or under a bed and not on a stand? Warfield. 00:09:13.179 --> 00:09:16.339 I won't read the whole quote for you, but he says this. 00:09:16.340 --> 00:09:22.660 The Old Testament may be likened to a chamber richly furnished but dimly lighted. 00:09:23.780 --> 00:09:27.120 There is this room that has wonderful things in it. 00:09:27.160 --> 00:09:31.940 The problem is the light is so low you can't actually see what you're dealing with. 00:09:32.879 --> 00:09:38.460 Jesus here is telling them that he has come in his ministry to finally take the dimmer switch 00:09:38.460 --> 00:09:40.900 and push it all the way to the top. 00:09:41.060 --> 00:09:45.080 The things that were unclear in the Old Testament are now going to be clear. 00:09:45.080 --> 00:09:50.480 The questions that were unanswered in the Old Testament are now going to be answered. 00:09:51.120 --> 00:09:55.780 The things that were confusing are now going to be clarified and cleared up. 00:09:56.780 --> 00:10:00.860 People in the Old Testament, and you might think even of Jesus' original audience here, 00:10:00.940 --> 00:10:05.300 are like folks who are waiting for the new season of a TV show. 00:10:05.960 --> 00:10:08.080 They know everything that's come before. 00:10:08.379 --> 00:10:11.120 They know there are these two people who are interested in each other 00:10:11.120 --> 00:10:13.080 and may or may not end up together. 00:10:13.080 --> 00:10:15.920 They know there's a rivalry between two other characters, 00:10:16.040 --> 00:10:17.900 but they're not sure how it's going to resolve. 00:10:18.259 --> 00:10:24.300 And so they have all kinds of theories and hypotheses about how the show and the story is going to continue. 00:10:25.660 --> 00:10:28.420 And yet it's not until the secret is revealed, 00:10:28.520 --> 00:10:30.879 it's not until the new season drops, 00:10:31.040 --> 00:10:33.780 that they have all their questions answered. 00:10:33.779 --> 00:10:38.679 Except it's even worse than that. 00:10:39.279 --> 00:10:45.419 We are used to waiting maybe a year, maybe a few years to know what's going to happen in our favorite stories. 00:10:45.639 --> 00:10:49.620 The people in the Old Testament have been enduring 400 years of silence. 00:10:49.620 --> 00:10:56.220 It has been 400 years since God's last revelation in the Old Testament until Jesus comes in the New Testament. 00:10:56.220 --> 00:11:04.440 And so there's been all sorts of guesses and predictions about how it is that the promises of the Old Testament are going to be fulfilled. 00:11:05.420 --> 00:11:10.759 Jesus then comes to finally and fully give the ultimate reveal. 00:11:11.519 --> 00:11:16.740 He comes to finally clarify what has been wondered at for centuries. 00:11:16.740 --> 00:11:19.539 We had all these we going to resolve the paradox of the temple, 00:11:27.659 --> 00:11:30.659 that God is both incredibly holy and can't be approached, 00:11:30.659 --> 00:11:33.399 and at the same time this temple, this tabernacle, 00:11:33.740 --> 00:11:37.759 exists within the center of his people, representing his presence with them? 00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:41.759 If you think back to our series on Advent, those same questions appear. 00:11:42.100 --> 00:11:44.899 How is it that the head of the serpent is going to be crushed? 00:11:44.899 --> 00:11:49.220 How is it that shame is actually going to come to an end once and for all? 00:11:49.379 --> 00:11:55.620 And how are we actually going to see a king who will rule over all the nations with a righteous rule? 00:11:58.600 --> 00:12:04.360 And Jesus finally comes to answer all of those things. 00:12:06.939 --> 00:12:11.199 And this season doesn't play out the way they expected. 00:12:11.200 --> 00:12:18.240 He comes as the Son of God and a king 00:13:18.360 --> 00:13:23.139 He is answering the most important questions ever asked. 00:13:23.439 --> 00:13:29.679 He is finally unwrapping what has been concealed and hidden for centuries. 00:13:29.679 --> 00:13:35.399 He is going to finally teach us and show us what it looks like to have this kind of king 00:13:35.399 --> 00:13:38.139 and how we live in his kingdom. 00:13:40.219 --> 00:13:46.639 And so we respond coming to the words of God with great joy and anticipation and diligence 00:13:46.639 --> 00:13:48.939 because we know what is most important. 00:13:49.079 --> 00:13:52.539 The greatest secrets and the wisdom of the universe are being revealed. 00:13:52.919 --> 00:13:57.139 That a child wiser than the wisest of men in an ultimate sense 00:13:57.139 --> 00:14:03.159 can be wiser than anyone else if they understand the secrets that God is revealing in his kingdom. 00:14:03.659 --> 00:14:07.899 It is what the apostle Peter tells us in 1 Peter 1.
