Our question is what did the cross achieve? 00:06:37.660 --> 00:06:42.100 I mentioned earlier this little booklet, Freed But At A Price. 00:06:42.100 --> 00:06:46.340 And it tells us of a story that some of us may remember. 00:06:46.520 --> 00:06:54.260 A few days before Easter in 2018, in the south of France, there was a hostage situation. 00:06:55.640 --> 00:06:59.800 And there was this gendarme, this police officer by the name of Arnold Beltram, 00:07:00.480 --> 00:07:04.460 who offered to take the place of the person who was held hostage, 00:07:04.980 --> 00:07:09.760 so that negotiations could continue, so that the women might be spared. 00:07:09.759 --> 00:07:15.719 Well, Arnold was shot and killed during that hostage situation. 00:07:16.579 --> 00:07:23.099 And a number of days later, as the lady, the hostage Julie, was being interviewed, 00:07:23.659 --> 00:07:25.779 she said simply, he gave his life for me. 00:07:26.519 --> 00:07:29.180 He was killed so I could live. 00:07:30.599 --> 00:07:35.620 And in a very real sense, that takes us to the heart of the very first Easter. 00:07:35.620 --> 00:07:43.600 It takes us to a world held hostage by the dark side of our nature, by our sin. 00:07:45.660 --> 00:07:52.280 And where we have no hope by ourselves of escape, and into that situation came Jesus. 00:07:53.899 --> 00:08:01.240 And Jesus' mission, as he described it himself, was to give his life as a ransom for many. 00:08:01.240 --> 00:08:10.819 A picture of a slave with no chance of escape, or indeed, of a hostage being held ransom. 00:08:12.360 --> 00:08:18.220 And the message of this first Easter is that if we believe in Jesus and what he has done on the cross, 00:08:18.300 --> 00:08:24.579 then we also can say, he died for me, so I can truly live. 00:08:24.579 --> 00:08:32.000 So as we continue to think with Luke about this journey to the cross, the journey to Jesus' death, 00:08:32.980 --> 00:08:35.939 we're going to see together a number of different events, 00:08:36.659 --> 00:08:43.559 different interactions and conversations that are going to reveal to us both the work of Christ and the heart of Christ. 00:08:44.199 --> 00:08:47.840 Helping us to see and to consider his loving rescue. 00:08:47.840 --> 00:08:52.340 And again, as we do that, let's be asking ourselves the question, 00:08:52.460 --> 00:09:00.560 what impact will this have on our lives as we think about what Jesus has done? 00:09:01.960 --> 00:09:08.240 Let's begin with the theme of substitution and with this man, Simon. 00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:11.740 So verse 26, we're introduced to him. 00:09:11.740 --> 00:09:19.500 We're told as the soldiers led Jesus away, they seized Simon and they put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. 00:09:20.500 --> 00:09:27.860 So behind this event lies the fact that Jesus is now in a severely weakened physical state, 00:09:28.519 --> 00:09:36.860 subject to multiple beatings, to cruelty and torture at the hands of the soldiers. 00:09:36.860 --> 00:09:41.240 And so he is unable any longer to carry his own cross. 00:09:41.340 --> 00:09:51.279 So this man, Simon, from North Africa, from Libya, is commanded then to carry the cross of Jesus to the place of crucifixion. 00:09:52.620 --> 00:09:57.860 And now we don't know very much about this man, Simon, but Mark tells us, Mark 15 verse 21, 00:09:57.960 --> 00:10:00.180 that he was the father of Alexander and Rufus. 00:10:00.179 --> 00:10:10.139 And that can seem kind of an incidental detail, but it also points to the fact that Alexander, Rufus, Simon, 00:10:10.559 --> 00:10:16.519 stand as early eyewitnesses to Jesus and to his death on the cross. 00:10:16.879 --> 00:10:22.039 And they are included so that people could go and ask questions of them 00:10:22.039 --> 00:10:27.519 when Mark's gospel was written some 30 years or so after the death of Jesus. 00:10:27.519 --> 00:10:33.699 Well, here is Simon, and he's been commanded to act as a substitute. 00:10:34.419 --> 00:10:38.419 He is carrying Jesus' cross to the place of crucifixion. 00:10:38.860 --> 00:10:43.879 But if we pan back in the story just a little bit, we recognize that in a far greater sense, 00:10:44.019 --> 00:10:47.960 Jesus on this journey is functioning as a substitute for Simon. 00:10:48.500 --> 00:10:51.840 And not just for Simon, but for anyone who will believe in him. 00:10:52.559 --> 00:10:54.439 Now, why can we say that? 00:10:54.440 --> 00:10:59.840 Because here is Jesus, the Son of God, who has become fully human. 00:10:59.940 --> 00:11:02.500 Here is Jesus, he is sinless, and he is perfect. 00:11:03.620 --> 00:11:04.840 But where is Jesus going? 00:11:04.940 --> 00:11:09.240 He's going to the place of the cross so that he would bear the burden of sin, 00:11:09.420 --> 00:11:11.760 and he would face the penalty for sin, 00:11:13.100 --> 00:11:17.060 that punishment, that penalty that you and I should deserve. 00:11:17.059 --> 00:11:24.099 And so the cross becomes God's great exchange. 00:11:25.799 --> 00:11:27.659 As we look to the cross, what are we seeing? 00:11:27.739 --> 00:11:32.899 We're seeing Jesus, the God-man, experiencing what we deserve. 00:11:35.699 --> 00:11:38.000 Separation from God, punishment from God. 00:11:38.619 --> 00:11:40.099 And he experiences that why? 00:11:41.099 --> 00:11:43.959 So that we might enjoy what he deserves. 00:11:44.879 --> 00:11:45.639 Eternal life. 00:11:45.639 --> 00:11:50.720 And so this theme of substitution is central to the good news of the cross, 00:11:50.779 --> 00:11:53.699 and it's central to the Christian faith. 00:11:55.519 --> 00:12:00.620 To think about it another way, let me read for us verse 44 again. 00:12:01.519 --> 00:12:06.000 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, 00:12:06.139 --> 00:12:08.519 for the sun stopped shining. 00:12:08.519 --> 00:12:14.500 This darkness at midday isn't natural, it's supernatural, it's an act of God. 00:12:14.539 --> 00:12:15.879 And what's happening there? 00:12:18.079 --> 00:12:26.939 On one hand, Jesus is entering the dark clouds of our human wickedness as he takes sin on himself. 00:12:27.659 --> 00:12:32.199 But he's also going into that darkness facing the penalty that sin deserves. 00:12:32.200 --> 00:12:36.680 In the Old Testament, darkness is often an image of the judgment of God. 00:12:37.040 --> 00:12:43.400 So here is Jesus, because he is bearing our sin, he is also bearing the punishment for sin. 00:12:44.400 --> 00:12:49.780 And he's going into the darkness as a substitute for all who will trust in him. 00:12:49.779 --> 00:12:54.939 It becomes clear in the cost of salvation that there is only one way to be saved. 00:12:55.039 --> 00:12:58.240 There's only one way to forgiveness, otherwise this would never happen to Jesus. 00:12:58.240 --> 00:13:06.240 And here, as we think about this theme of substitution, we're being invited to recognize the heart of Jesus. 00:13:07.039 --> 00:13:10.840 As he says to a world held hostage by sin and unbelief, 00:13:11.220 --> 00:13:17.320 I will die so that you can live and live eternally. 00:13:20.379 --> 00:13:23.340 But the cross speaks to us of more than just substitution. 00:13:23.340 --> 00:13:27.680 It also speaks to us of mercy. 00:13:29.300 --> 00:13:31.080 Mercy in the place of judgment. 00:13:32.540 --> 00:13:39.240 And to help us to see that, I want us to think about this conversation between Jesus and the women in verses 27 to 31. 00:13:40.259 --> 00:13:44.879 Many of us perhaps are familiar with the stage play Evita and the famous song, 00:13:44.960 --> 00:13:46.519 Don't Cry For Me, Argentina. 00:13:46.519 --> 00:13:51.879 Well, here is Jesus turning to this crowd, following after him's, 00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:55.000 Don't weep for me, women of Jerusalem. 00:13:55.059 --> 00:13:56.620 And we have to ask, why not? 00:13:56.699 --> 00:13:58.539 Why should they not weep for Jesus? 00:14:00.179 --> 00:14:01.819 Let's read again verse 27. 00:14:01.919 --> 00:14:06.779 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. 00:14:06.840 --> 00:14:09.720 So we know in that culture, public mourning was a thing. 00:14:09.720 --> 00:14:16.279 Here is a group of women who are showing sympathy towards Jesus in his suffering. 00:14:16.759 --> 00:14:18.540 But Jesus responds, 00:14:20.379 --> 00:14:21.680 Do not weep for me. 00:14:22.620 --> 00:14:26.440 Weep for yourselves and for your children. 00:14:27.860 --> 00:14:31.560 Jesus is walking to his death and he knows it. 00:14:32.820 --> 00:14:33.879 And yet he says to them, 00:14:33.980 --> 00:14:35.740 Your weeping is misplaced. 00:14:35.820 --> 00:14:36.660 Don't weep for me. 00:14:37.560 --> 00:14:39.259 Weep for yourselves and for your children. 00:14:39.259 --> 00:14:41.659 Now why can he say that? 00:14:41.720 --> 00:14:42.740 Why would he say that? 00:14:44.100 --> 00:14:46.379 Let me suggest three answers for us. 00:14:46.460 --> 00:14:48.740 One, it's Friday. 00:14:49.159 --> 00:14:50.100 It's Good Friday. 00:14:50.840 --> 00:14:53.700 But Jesus knows Sunday is coming. 00:14:55.019 --> 00:14:57.740 Jesus knows in the plan of God, yes, he will die. 00:14:57.819 --> 00:15:00.679 But he will also rise in victory. 00:15:00.879 --> 00:15:01.439 And so he says, 00:15:01.580 --> 00:15:02.899 Do not weep. 00:15:03.039 --> 00:15:05.059 This is not the end of my story. 00:15:05.059 --> 00:15:07.879 He says, 00:15:08.039 --> 00:15:09.319 Don't weep for me. 00:15:09.439 --> 00:15:10.239 Weep for yourselves. 00:15:10.439 --> 00:15:12.000 Because he knows another thing is coming. 00:15:12.099 --> 00:15:15.519 He knows future judgment is coming. 00:15:16.359 --> 00:15:19.099 That's why there's that language in 29 and 30. 00:15:19.599 --> 00:15:20.839 The time will come when you will say, 00:15:20.939 --> 00:15:22.419 Blessed are the childless women. 00:15:23.579 --> 00:15:24.799 Then they will say to the mountains, 00:15:24.939 --> 00:15:26.919 Fall on us and to the hills cover us. 00:15:26.919 --> 00:15:31.219 It's language that speaks of the coming judgment of God. 00:15:32.199 --> 00:15:35.500 Last week we thought about the fact that Jesus came to the city of Jerusalem 00:15:35.500 --> 00:15:38.919 and he wept over it because they didn't recognize in his coming, 00:15:39.360 --> 00:15:40.360 is God's coming? 00:15:40.639 --> 00:15:42.959 Is God's Savior come for them? 00:15:42.960 --> 00:15:44.220 They rejected him. 00:15:44.660 --> 00:15:46.160 And so judgment would come. 00:15:46.980 --> 00:15:53.120 And so here is Jesus giving one last lament for the city, 00:15:54.120 --> 00:15:57.420 for those who would turn their back on him. 00:15:58.160 --> 00:15:58.460 And say, 00:15:58.540 --> 00:15:59.160 Don't weep for me. 00:15:59.240 --> 00:16:00.379 Weep for I have true faith and find mercy from Jesus? 00:18:58.180 --> 00:19:05.820 That's not all that the cross achieves for us. 00:19:06.220 --> 00:19:08.980 We can move to verses 32 to 34 00:19:08.980 --> understands, 00:19:57.059 --> 00:19:59.279 that's why Jesus came, 00:20:00.339 --> 00:20:01.660 is that this fulfills Scripture. 00:20:02.519 --> 00:20:04.339 This fulfills the plan of God. --> 00:20:15.920 he was pierced for our transgressions. 00:20:16.400 --> 00:20:17.000 Verse 12, 00:20:17.099 --> 00:20:19.819 he was numbered among the transgressors. 00:20:19.819 --> 00:20:22.119 Psalm 22, verse 18, 00:20:22.319 --> 00:20:25.379 they divided my clothes among them. 00:20:25.759 --> 00:20:27.819 The Old Testament anticipates 00:20:27.819 --> 00:20:30.220 the work of God's
