--> 00:02:22.240 whose name was Sihata. 00:02:22.240 --> 00:02:27.420 Sihata was born as a prince in Nepal. 00:02:28.340 --> 00:02:31.360 He was born about 500 years before Jesus came. 00:02:32.540 --> 00:02:34.140 Because he lived as a prince, 00:02:34.500 --> 00:02:37.360 he lived quite a comfortable life. 00:02:37.600 --> 00:02:40.580 He didn't know anything about suffering. 00:02:41.460 --> 00:02:44.260 He just thought that that's all about life. 00:02:44.840 --> 00:02:47.219 Until one day he grew old enough, 00:02:47.400 --> 00:02:50.980 and his parents allowed him to go outside of the palace. 00:02:50.979 --> 00:02:54.799 He went out and visited his people. 00:02:56.259 --> 00:02:59.359 And during that visit, it gave him a shock. 00:03:00.079 --> 00:03:03.399 Because he saw people hungry, 00:03:04.259 --> 00:03:05.039 people begging, 00:03:05.719 --> 00:03:07.839 people sick, 00:03:08.219 --> 00:03:09.359 and even people dying. 00:03:10.719 --> 00:03:12.959 And that upset him very much. 00:03:13.519 --> 00:03:17.259 And I suppose he's a special person. 00:03:18.099 --> 00:03:20.019 I mean, most people said this is life. 00:03:20.020 --> 00:03:20.740 But for him, 00:03:21.380 --> 00:03:23.900 he didn't think that life should be like this. 00:03:25.100 --> 00:03:29.719 He think that life should be like his time, 00:03:29.820 --> 00:03:30.820 like in his family. 00:03:31.360 --> 00:03:32.900 There's no suffering. 00:03:33.700 --> 00:03:36.840 So he was trying to figure out what's going on. 00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:37.820 I mean, what is life? 00:03:38.379 --> 00:03:40.200 Why was there suffering? 00:03:41.280 --> 00:03:43.219 And how could people live without suffering? 00:03:43.219 --> 00:03:48.359 So it upset him so much that he couldn't let this go. But one night he just couldn't take it anymore. 00:03:58.300 --> 00:03:59.520 He left the palace. 00:04:00.020 --> 00:04:00.520 He went out. 00:04:01.199 --> 00:04:03.560 And he gave up all his comfort. 00:04:03.560 --> 00:04:07.099 He went out and lived with the people. 00:04:07.699 --> 00:04:09.920 And he traveled around, 00:04:10.580 --> 00:04:12.199 thinking about life. 00:04:13.259 --> 00:04:14.560 After many years, 00:04:14.740 --> 00:04:16.939 he came to a conclusion that, 00:04:17.519 --> 00:04:19.720 oh, why people suffer so much? 00:04:19.779 --> 00:04:21.600 It's because of cravings. 00:04:21.860 --> 00:04:24.120 Because people crave for things. 00:04:24.340 --> 00:04:24.620 He said, 00:04:24.620 --> 00:04:26.319 because you crave for things, 00:04:27.500 --> 00:04:29.019 you suffer. 00:04:29.699 --> 00:04:31.220 If you don't crave for anything, 00:04:31.360 --> 00:04:32.019 then you don't suffer. 00:04:33.079 --> 00:04:35.759 Like if we crave for love, 00:04:36.860 --> 00:04:39.280 then we can be cheated by someone 00:04:39.280 --> 00:04:43.560 who appears to offer you love, 00:04:43.560 --> 00:04:45.840 but actually trying to take advantage of you. 00:04:46.720 --> 00:04:48.139 You crave for money, 00:04:48.680 --> 00:04:52.019 and then we can lose all our wealth by gambling. 00:04:53.180 --> 00:04:54.439 So you crave for respect, 00:04:54.439 --> 00:04:54.980 why people, 00:04:55.120 --> 00:04:56.300 if people don't respect you, 00:04:56.719 --> 00:04:57.800 you get very angry, 00:04:58.000 --> 00:04:59.779 and sometimes you even kill somebody. 00:05:00.740 --> 00:05:03.259 And so we suffer for all those consequences. 00:05:03.839 --> 00:05:07.139 But what about people who are born in poverty, 00:05:07.360 --> 00:05:09.279 or born with effect? 00:05:09.620 --> 00:05:10.079 Then he said, 00:05:10.160 --> 00:05:12.740 that's because in your previous life, 00:05:13.540 --> 00:05:15.019 you did something bad. 00:05:15.319 --> 00:05:16.480 You crave for something, 00:05:16.659 --> 00:05:17.459 and you did something bad. 00:05:17.800 --> 00:05:21.180 And you didn't get the consequence that time, 00:05:21.180 --> 00:05:23.759 but you will get it in your next life. 00:05:23.759 --> 00:05:24.519 And so, 00:05:25.079 --> 00:05:29.599 Sihata has come to this conclusion, 00:05:29.719 --> 00:05:31.180 which is not too bad, actually, 00:05:31.339 --> 00:05:33.819 in terms of how to explain life. 00:05:34.279 --> 00:05:37.240 But he wants to end suffering, basically. 00:05:37.439 --> 00:05:38.180 He wants to, 00:05:38.819 --> 00:05:40.039 he sees people suffer. 00:05:40.579 --> 00:05:42.819 So he said that if you don't want to suffer, 00:05:43.120 --> 00:05:45.279 eventually you need to have no craving. 00:05:45.279 --> 00:05:47.599 And unless you, 00:05:47.799 --> 00:05:48.359 and this is, 00:05:48.539 --> 00:05:50.339 he called that this is a state of blessedness, 00:05:50.379 --> 00:05:51.479 when you can get there. 00:05:52.219 --> 00:05:53.319 But before you can, 00:05:53.539 --> 00:05:54.500 until you get there, 00:05:54.659 --> 00:05:57.139 you will keep reincarnating. 00:05:57.500 --> 00:05:58.539 So you die, 00:05:58.659 --> 00:05:59.159 you get birth. 00:05:59.160 --> 00:06:00.600 And so, 00:06:01.140 --> 00:06:02.960 you go through the pain of death, 00:06:03.020 --> 00:06:05.360 even if your life is not that, 00:06:05.720 --> 00:06:07.020 you don't suffer so much, 00:06:07.280 --> 00:06:08.540 but on the deathbed, 00:06:08.640 --> 00:06:09.760 you still suffer. 00:06:10.160 --> any craving, 00:06:21.640 --> 00:06:22.680 then you don't die anymore. 00:06:22.680 --> 00:06:26.579 And during each reincarnation, 00:06:26.920 --> 00:06:28.240 you may either be demoted 00:06:28.240 --> 00:06:30.500 to an existence of more suffering, 00:06:30.939 --> 00:06:33.480 or promoted to an existence of less suffering. 00:06:34.100 --> 00:06:36.720 And to be promoted to a better state of existence, 00:06:37.199 --> 00:06:39.860 you need to accumulate 00:06:39.860 --> 00:06:42.899 or save sufficient good karma for your next life. 00:06:43.680 --> 00:06:44.980 So if you work hard enough, 00:06:45.280 --> 00:06:47.560 after thousands of reincarnations, 00:06:47.939 --> 00:06:51.040 you may be able to get to the state of blessedness, 00:06:51.040 --> 00:06:53.720 when you will be free from suffering. 00:06:54.860 --> 00:06:57.080 So Sihata started Buddhism, 00:06:57.379 --> 00:06:59.819 and his name became Gautama Buddha. 00:07:01.520 --> 00:07:04.439 So while Gautama Buddha's explanation of life 00:07:04.439 --> 00:07:05.400 makes some sense, 00:07:05.700 --> 00:07:07.820 his understanding is not complete, 00:07:07.920 --> 00:07:10.400 because he left God out of the picture. 00:07:12.040 --> 00:07:14.300 So before God is a reference point, 00:07:14.840 --> 00:07:17.220 Gautama Buddha thought that boys and girls, 00:07:17.640 --> 00:07:18.280 men and women, 00:07:18.759 --> 00:07:21.020 can be righteous if they try hard enough. 00:07:21.040 --> 00:07:23.900 Like all men make religions, 00:07:24.560 --> 00:07:26.100 the assumption is that 00:07:26.100 --> 00:07:28.360 man's outward performance of righteousness 00:07:28.360 --> 00:07:30.740 is sufficient to be considered 00:07:30.740 --> 00:07:33.480 making the passing mark for righteousness. 00:07:34.840 --> 00:07:40.439 And Jesus gave us a surprising answer about this. 00:07:40.520 --> 00:07:41.660 In Matthew 5.20, 00:07:41.780 --> 00:07:42.259 Jesus said, 00:07:42.259 --> 00:07:43.639 For I tell you, 00:07:43.959 --> 00:07:45.759 unless your righteousness exceeds 00:07:45.759 --> 00:07:48.099 that of the scribes and Pharisees, 00:07:48.240 --> 00:07:51.500 you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 00:07:53.319 --> 00:07:54.699 The scribes and Pharisees 00:07:54.699 --> 00:07:57.539 were the most righteous men ever lived. 00:07:58.500 --> 00:08:00.800 They were zealous for the law. 00:08:02.719 --> 00:08:06.560 They only wanted to do what God wanted them to do. 00:08:06.899 --> 00:08:07.620 But Jesus said, 00:08:07.680 --> 00:08:08.399 that is not enough. 00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:09.920 Why is that not enough? 00:08:09.920 --> 00:08:12.000 Just because they were doing it for themselves, 00:08:12.340 --> 00:08:13.740 and not for God. 00:08:14.600 --> 00:08:18.400 And those righteousness are outward righteousness. 00:08:18.980 --> 00:08:20.020 We will come back to that. 00:08:20.920 --> 00:08:21.819 And secondly, 00:08:22.060 --> 00:08:23.819 without God as the source point, 00:08:24.020 --> 00:08:25.259 Gautama Buddha thought that 00:08:25.259 --> 00:08:27.080 blessedness is the absence of suffering. 00:08:28.240 --> 00:08:29.100 He did not know God, 00:08:29.200 --> 00:08:31.240 so he didn't have the concept of God. 00:08:31.240 --> 00:08:34.259 He could only see things through his woe-ly eyes. 00:08:35.060 --> 00:08:37.039 He had no idea what God has prepared 00:08:37.039 --> 00:08:38.319 for those who loved him. 00:08:38.879 --> 00:08:43.079 So he left out an important part of life 00:08:43.079 --> 00:08:44.639 because he left God out of the picture. 00:08:45.679 --> 00:08:49.379 If Gautama Buddha had read Psalms 1 and 2 00:08:49.379 --> 00:08:50.579 and understood them, 00:08:50.919 --> 00:08:53.000 he would not have needed to waste his time 00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:54.379 trying to invent the will. 00:08:55.759 --> 00:08:56.719 In these two Psalms, 00:08:56.819 --> 00:08:58.319 God has revealed the reasons 00:08:58.319 --> 00:08:59.599 for our suffering 00:08:59.599 --> 00:09:02.620 and the way to blessedness and freedom. 00:09:02.620 --> 00:09:06.060 So Psalm 1 starts with, 00:09:06.519 --> 00:09:07.620 blessed is the man. 00:09:08.639 --> 00:09:10.139 Gautama Buddha was correct 00:09:10.139 --> 00:09:11.620 in thinking that the state of blessedness 00:09:12.259 --> 00:09:13.620 is the longing of humans. 00:09:15.720 --> 00:09:16.720 So even though he said 00:09:16.720 --> 00:09:17.980 that we shouldn't crave for anything, 00:09:18.220 --> 00:09:19.919 but he actually craved for blessedness. 00:09:20.659 --> 00:09:22.320 That is a paradox in itself. 00:09:22.899 --> 00:09:24.779 If a Buddhist somehow managed 00:09:24.779 --> 00:09:25.620 to achieve Buddhahood, 00:09:27.159 --> become holy. 00:09:59.240 --> 00:10:01.759 It does not crave for things 00:10:01.759 --> 00:10:02.899 like sinners do. 00:10:03.840 --> 00:10:04.580 Sinners are people 00:10:04.580 --> 00:10:05.720
