00:05:52.240 --> 00:05:58.719 It would utterly shock us to think that they could be dangerously immature. 00:05:58.720 --> 00:06:07.740 And you know, in the same way, that's probably how the times in these four verses of chapter 3, these first four verses, 00:06:20.940 --> 00:06:25.300 Paul calls them more or less dangerously immature in Christ. 00:06:25.300 --> 00:06:28.660 But wait a second, some of them must be thinking, 00:06:28.980 --> 00:06:29.439 us? 00:06:30.120 --> 00:06:31.180 Infants in Christ? 00:06:31.800 --> 00:06:33.840 Us behaving in a merely human way? 00:06:34.720 --> 00:06:36.980 Us, not spiritual, but of the flesh? 00:06:37.100 --> 00:06:37.939 Paul, come on. 00:06:38.520 --> 00:06:39.460 That can't be. 00:06:40.819 --> 00:06:42.699 I mean, think of what we know about the church in Corinth. 00:06:43.160 --> 00:06:46.740 By the time Paul wrote this letter, the church at Corinth had been around for a number of years, 00:06:46.840 --> 00:06:48.000 probably five or more. 00:06:48.580 --> 00:06:53.199 And for the first year and a half, the apostle Paul himself was their pastor and teacher. 00:06:53.199 --> 00:06:57.560 And then after that, they had Apollos, who was known for being a great teacher in the early church. 00:06:57.879 --> 00:07:03.279 So these weren't some newly planted, half-baked in the faith Christians. 00:07:04.800 --> 00:07:10.019 They seemed to have a good foundation, and they'd been around for a while, relatively speaking. 00:07:10.919 --> 00:07:16.620 And on top of all that, we know that they were not lacking in any spiritual gift, 00:07:16.680 --> 00:07:18.980 as Paul himself said back in chapter 1, verse 7. 00:07:18.980 --> 00:07:24.620 In other words, the Holy Spirit was visibly active in their midst. 00:07:25.200 --> 00:07:30.700 What we might call today miraculous gifts were perhaps a regular thing for them. 00:07:32.980 --> 00:07:38.439 So here it seemed was an established, vibrant, and yes, we would say spiritual church. 00:07:40.100 --> 00:07:45.180 Seminary students from all around were dying to get their internship credits at Corinth. 00:07:45.180 --> 00:07:45.300 Corinth. 00:07:46.900 --> 00:07:50.500 Church growth magazines were always calling for interviews. 00:07:52.240 --> 00:07:54.680 Corinth was the it church. 00:07:56.720 --> 00:07:58.060 But Paul says, 00:07:59.220 --> 00:08:01.819 I could not even address you as spiritual people. 00:08:02.939 --> 00:08:06.620 You're so woefully, dangerously immature. 00:08:10.019 --> 00:08:13.439 So what did Paul see that the Corinthians didn't? 00:08:13.439 --> 00:08:15.860 Look at verse 3. 00:08:17.680 --> 00:08:19.560 Less than halfway into that verse, he says, 00:08:19.680 --> 00:08:22.439 For while there is still jealousy and strife among you, 00:08:23.339 --> 00:08:28.220 are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? 00:08:29.480 --> 00:08:30.420 There it is. 00:08:31.360 --> 00:08:33.419 telling us is that if our hearts are ruled by jealousy and strife, 00:08:49.280 --> 00:08:52.860 if they're riddled with comparison and competition, 00:08:52.860 --> 00:08:55.700 if our minds are constantly asking, 00:08:56.180 --> 00:08:57.200 where do I fit? 00:08:57.860 --> 00:09:00.460 Am I ahead or falling behind? 00:09:00.900 --> 00:09:03.260 How can I make myself look a little better? 00:09:03.259 --> 00:09:09.019 Then we are still, friends, infants in Christ. 00:09:09.840 --> 00:09:13.960 Then we're still living out of our old, fallen nature. 00:09:15.059 --> 00:09:17.100 And at the general level, that's certainly true. 00:09:17.559 --> 00:09:22.179 Jealousy and strife in any form are signs that we need to keep growing in our walk with Christ. 00:09:22.279 --> 00:09:22.960 But at Corinth, 00:09:24.100 --> 00:09:28.259 this comparison and competition took a specific form, 00:09:28.299 --> 00:09:29.759 a particular shape. 00:09:29.759 --> 00:09:32.600 Look at verse 4. 00:09:34.179 --> 00:09:34.939 For when one says, 00:09:35.179 --> 00:09:35.980 I follow Paul, 00:09:36.240 --> 00:09:36.939 and another, 00:09:37.179 --> 00:09:38.480 I follow Apollos, 00:09:38.679 --> 00:09:41.039 are you not being merely human? 00:09:42.779 --> 00:09:45.759 Now we've seen this problem in previous weeks, 00:09:45.819 --> 00:09:46.240 haven't we? 00:09:46.759 --> 00:09:49.919 The church in Corinth was becoming divided into factions 00:09:49.919 --> 00:09:54.019 based on which leader or teacher they identified with. 00:09:54.539 --> 00:09:55.679 And literally they were saying, 00:09:55.899 --> 00:09:57.899 not I follow Paul or Apollos, 00:09:58.019 --> 00:10:00.019 but literally I'm of Paul. 00:10:00.379 --> 00:10:01.939 I'm of Apollos. 00:10:02.059 --> 00:10:04.459 I belong to this or that leader. 00:10:05.259 --> 00:10:07.159 And that makes me something special. 00:10:08.199 --> 00:10:09.579 That makes me a cut above. 00:10:12.299 --> 00:10:13.899 And that kind of comparison, 00:10:14.319 --> 00:10:15.500 that kind of competition, 00:10:15.659 --> 00:10:16.179 Paul says, 00:10:16.519 --> 00:10:19.659 proved that they were still infants in Christ. 00:10:20.539 --> 00:10:21.139 Immature. 00:10:22.059 --> 00:10:22.860 Merely human. 00:10:25.479 --> 00:10:29.559 But is this a specific problem that we deal with today? 00:10:30.899 --> 00:10:31.299 I mean, 00:10:31.319 --> 00:10:32.439 maybe not in the same way, right? 00:10:32.599 --> 00:10:34.159 But it still crops up 00:10:34.159 --> 00:10:36.339 in some less obvious forms. 00:10:37.339 -->
