thankfully we have the freedom to continue to meet today in person. 00:00:33.399 --> 00:00:38.679 And I guess I'm not going to worry for ourselves anyways about whether that will be taken away 00:00:38.679 --> 00:00:39.179 this year. 00:00:39.859 --> 00:00:44.079 The Lord Jesus has said, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. 00:00:44.820 --> 00:00:46.379 Each day has enough trouble of its own. 00:00:47.480 --> 00:00:53.840 But I got thinking, what are all those underground churches preaching about this morning in their 00:00:53.840 --> 00:00:54.260 services? 00:00:54.259 --> 00:00:59.780 And then I thought, well, it's probably the good news of Jesus. 00:00:59.960 --> 00:01:01.420 It's probably the story of Jesus. 00:01:01.539 --> 00:01:02.640 What else would they be preaching? 00:01:04.319 --> 00:01:05.359 That's our main thing. 00:01:06.459 --> 00:01:09.280 Jesus is everything to us as a church. 00:01:09.700 --> 00:01:11.319 And if we have him, we have everything. 00:01:12.039 --> 00:01:13.879 And if we don't have him, we don't have anything. 00:01:13.879 --> 00:01:20.920 So we're going to continue right on with our series through 00:01:36.640 He's teaching the people. 00:01:36.640 --> 00:01:39.939 The people are astonished at his teaching. 00:01:40.219 --> 00:01:41.859 They wonder where he got it from. 00:01:42.439 --> 00:01:44.840 Jesus told them that his teaching is from God. 00:01:45.460 --> 00:01:47.319 Some of them don't believe that. 00:01:47.980 --> 00:01:50.680 And Jesus has been making the case that he's no deceiver. 00:01:51.400 --> 00:01:56.599 The evidence is there that he hasn't been seeking glory or praise for himself in all this, 00:01:56.599 --> 00:02:02.159 but that he's been seeking for the people to glorify and praise God the Father who sent him. 00:02:03.319 --> 00:02:06.959 So we're going to pick up the conversation in verse 19. 00:02:07.119 --> 00:02:13.780 At this point in the conversation, Jesus seems to turn the focus onto them and away from himself. 00:02:14.719 --> 00:02:15.819 Verse 19. 00:02:16.579 --> 00:02:20.000 Has not Moses given you the law, says Jesus? 00:02:21.019 --> 00:02:22.959 Yet not one of you keeps the law. 00:02:23.780 --> 00:02:25.459 Why are you trying to kill me? 00:02:26.599 --> 00:02:29.359 You have to know that at this point in the conversation, 00:02:29.539 --> 00:02:32.719 this probably took the conversation to a whole different level. 00:02:33.960 --> 00:02:41.439 Let's remember that there are hundreds if not thousands of people gathered there for the festival at this point. 00:02:42.219 --> 00:02:45.139 And Jesus throws this out into the whole crowd. 00:02:46.039 --> 00:02:48.419 Has not Moses given you the law? 00:02:59.000 Of course, Moses has given you the law. 00:02:59.079 --> 00:02:59.799 You have it. 00:03:01.680 --> 00:03:04.280 But why are you not living according to the law? 00:03:04.319 --> 00:03:09.240 And I think at this point, Jesus is talking specifically to the Jewish leaders in the crowd. 00:03:11.139 --> 00:03:12.419 You know what is right. 00:03:13.199 --> 00:03:15.039 You know what is wrong from the law. 00:03:15.039 --> 00:03:17.319 And yet not one of you keeps the law. 00:03:18.199 --> 00:03:19.060 Case in point. 00:03:19.199 --> 00:03:20.840 Why are you trying to kill me? 00:03:22.120 --> 00:03:24.099 This is an amazing response. 00:03:24.539 --> 00:03:33.979 And on the surface, it might look like Jesus is just kind of throwing out some kind of an accusation that will get people's attention off of him and onto the religious leaders. 00:03:33.979 --> 00:03:35.000 But it's more than that. 00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:35.959 It's far from that. 00:03:36.659 --> 00:03:44.099 Jesus and a good number of people have known for a while that the religious leaders are out for his blood. 00:03:44.099 --> 00:03:47.159 The religious leaders have been plotting. 00:03:47.620 --> 00:03:49.019 They have been scheming. 00:03:49.299 --> 00:03:50.500 They've been asking around. 00:03:50.579 --> 00:03:52.060 As we heard back up in verse 11. 00:03:52.180 --> 00:03:54.560 They've been at this festival saying, where is he? 00:03:54.560 --> 00:04:07.420 And Jesus, in front of this whole crowd that's gathered there, he exposes just what the religious leaders are up to in front of everyone. 00:04:07.800 --> 00:04:11.620 And not only that, but he uses it as an example of their own hypocrisy. 00:04:13.199 --> 00:04:16.379 Talking about deceiving people and deceivers. 00:04:17.699 --> 00:04:20.120 You know, these guys are the religious leaders. 00:04:20.699 --> 00:04:22.800 They're the experts in the law. 00:04:24.560 --> 00:04:29.160 He says, you have God's holy law, yet not one of you keeps the law. 00:04:30.120 --> 00:04:32.980 Case in point, why are you trying to kill me? 00:04:34.699 --> 00:04:38.280 Let's think about the law that God gave to Israel and what it says in this matter. 00:04:38.379 --> 00:04:39.740 Just a couple quick verses. 00:04:40.220 --> 00:04:41.800 Deuteronomy 25 verse 1. 00:04:42.779 --> 00:04:44.259 The Lord said this. 00:04:44.879 --> 00:04:50.959 When people have a dispute, they are to take it to court and the judges will decide the case. 00:04:51.579 --> 00:04:54.360 Acquitting the innocent and condemning the guilty. 00:04:54.560 --> 00:04:58.680 So there's instruction about what to do in a dispute. 00:04:59.240 --> 00:05:02.939 Jesus and the religious leaders are in a bit of a dispute here. 00:05:03.399 --> 00:05:07.199 And then when they get to the court, there are instructions that the Lord gave about that too. 00:05:08.079 --> 00:05:09.959 He said in Exodus 23 verse 7, 00:05:09.959 --> 00:05:23.299 So they want Jesus dead. 00:05:24.099 --> 00:05:31.679 But the only justifiable reason to put anyone to death is if they're guilty of breaking the law of God in a way that deserves capital punishment. 00:05:31.680 --> 00:05:38.480 And all of this, of course, is to be handled in the court system with due process and proceedings. 00:05:38.480 --> 00:05:49.280 So if Jesus' death doesn't come this way, then the other law that applies from the law is Exodus 20 verse 13, right out of the Ten Commandments. 00:05:49.900 --> 00:05:51.740 You shall not murder. 00:05:51.740 --> 00:05:58.240 This is what Jesus is really exposing in the so-called religious leaders. 00:05:59.060 --> 00:06:00.879 It's hypocrisy of the worst kind. 00:06:01.939 --> 00:06:03.500 Deceit of the worst kind. 00:06:04.500 --> 00:06:12.400 They're pretending to be righteous, faithful, devout followers of God who obey him and do the law of God. 00:06:12.399 --> 00:06:16.000 Yet in their hearts, they are envious and murderous. 00:06:16.959 --> 00:06:18.560 And not just in their hearts. 00:06:18.759 --> 00:06:23.359 They've been actively scheming and plotting and planning to get Jesus killed. 00:06:24.379 --> 00:06:25.959 That's what murderers do. 00:06:27.479 --> 00:06:31.039 So Jesus asks them in front of everyone, 00:06:31.979 --> 00:06:34.000 Why are you trying to kill me? 00:06:35.379 --> 00:06:36.179 Verse 20. 00:06:37.319 --> 00:06:39.319 It's the crowd who responds, 00:06:40.579 --> 00:06:42.299 You are demon-possessed. 00:06:43.079 --> 00:06:43.959 The crowd answered, 00:06:44.259 --> 00:06:45.459 Who is trying to kill you? 00:06:47.019 --> 00:06:48.659 Now it's maybe a little ambiguous. 00:06:49.000 --> 00:06:50.739 It says the crowd is the one that answered. 00:06:51.199 --> 00:06:54.719 But this is probably some of the crowd who have traveled from other parts of Israel. 00:06:55.399 --> 00:07:00.679 Maybe they are unfamiliar with all that's been going on between Jesus and the religious leaders. 00:07:01.239 --> 00:07:04.560 But they kind of just seem to be throwing out an accusation. 00:07:04.560 --> 00:07:06.359 You know, you're mad. 00:07:06.819 --> 00:07:07.799 You're insane. 00:07:08.079 --> 00:07:08.979 You're crazy. 00:07:09.919 --> 00:07:11.039 Who's trying to kill you? 00:07:11.040 --> 00:07:16.360 You think the government, the religious ruling leaders are out to get you? 00:07:17.000 --> 00:07:18.800 This guy must be demon-possessed. 00:07:18.800 --> 00:07:25.600 Interestingly enough, Jesus doesn't seem to answer the question any further. 00:07:26.220 --> 00:07:31.259 Maybe he felt that he had already answered it, or maybe he didn't think they were sincere in asking it. 00:07:31.319 --> 00:07:31.920 I'm not sure. 00:07:32.280 --> 00:07:36.960 But he just goes right on ahead with exposing the hypocrisy of the religious leaders. 00:07:36.959 --> 00:07:38.739 Verse 21. 00:07:38.739 --> 00:07:40.719 Jesus said to them, 00:07:40.720 --> 00:07:44.760 I did one miracle, and you are all amazed. 00:07:45.680 --> 00:07:52.700 Yet because Moses gave you circumcision, though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs, 00:07:52.980 --> 00:07:54.920 you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. 00:07:54.920 --> 00:08:01.300 Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, 00:08:01.300 --> 00:08:06.560 why are you angry with me for healing a man's whole body on the Sabbath? 00:08:07.680 --> 00:08:09.740 Stop judging by mere appearances. 00:08:11.439 --> 00:08:14.879 Instead, judge correctly, says Jesus. 00:08:14.879 --> 00:08:20.159 So Jesus points back to his last run-in with the religious leaders back in chapter 5. 00:08:21.120 --> 00:08:25.740 We heard how he healed that man at the Pool of Siloam on the Sabbath day. 00:08:26.560 --> 00:08:32.179 And we saw how the religious leaders after that began to go after him even more, trying to kill him. 00:08:33.139 --> 00:08:33.939 Jesus says, 00:08:34.019 --> 00:08:39.600 I did one miracle, literally one work, and you are all amazed. 00:08:40.600 --> 00:08:42.779 And probably this is not the good kind of amazed. 00:08:42.779 --> 00:08:45.019 It's probably more like astonished. 00:08:45.199 --> 00:08:49.339 You're all shocked that I did that on the Sabbath. 00:08:50.319 --> 00:08:52.879 That's your charge against me. 00:08:53.759 --> 00:08:57.240 That's why I'm deserving of death, because I did that on the Sabbath. 00:08:57.419 --> 00:08:58.179 You hypocrites! 00:08:59.419 --> 00:09:05.799 Don't you also, in the same way, break the Sabbath by doing the work of circumcision? 00:09:05.799 --> 00:09:15.779 The covenant that was made with Abraham and the law of Moses prescribed circumcision for every baby boy on the eighth day of his life. 00:09:16.500 --> 00:09:21.679 But what happens when his eighth day of life is on the Sabbath? 00:09:21.679 --> 00:09:30.239 Well, the Jewish leaders recognized that even though it technically was work to circumcise the baby boy, 00:09:30.959 --> 00:09:33.679 they should still do this on the Sabbath day, they said. 00:09:34.639 --> 00:09:36.199 I mean, this is circumcision. 00:09:36.439 --> 00:09:40.259 This is the sign of the covenant between God and the people. 00:09:40.799 --> 00:09:46.179 Doing this puts that boy into a right covenant standing with God. 00:09:46.179 --> 00:09:48.899 And it's necessary. 00:09:50.659 --> 00:09:54.799 Jesus masterfully argues from the lesser to the greater. 00:09:55.979 --> 00:10:03.739 He says, you will circumcise a boy on the Sabbath day to heal or to make right that one part of his body. 00:10:04.799 --> 00:10:10.759 So why are you angry with me for healing a man's whole body on the Sabbath? 00:10:10.759 --> 00:10:14.980 This guy hadn't been able to walk for 38 years. 00:10:16.700 --> 00:10:21.439 And you're telling me that I'm guilty of breaking the Sabbath because I didn't let him go another day. 00:10:21.580 --> 00:10:25.200 I didn't wait another day till the Sabbath was over to heal him. 00:10:26.539 --> 00:10:30.200 Stop judging by mere appearances, says Jesus. 00:10:30.759 --> 00:10:32.379 And make a right judgment. 00:10:34.120 --> 00:10:34.639 Wow. 00:10:37.059 --> 00:10:39.179 What's the problem with these religious leaders? 00:10:40.759 --> 00:10:43.399 The religious leaders are trying to play a game here. 00:10:43.779 --> 00:10:48.240 They're trying to make Jesus look bad on the surface. 00:10:49.080 --> 00:10:50.539 On the face of things. 00:10:50.720 --> 00:10:51.860 In front of all the people. 00:10:52.759 --> 00:10:55.799 But their charge and their accusation is all wrong. 00:10:56.600 --> 00:10:57.819 They've misapplied the law. 00:10:58.279 --> 00:11:00.220 And they haven't done that innocently. 00:11:00.379 --> 00:11:02.299 They're trying to twist the law. 00:11:02.919 --> 00:11:04.500 And use it against Jesus. 00:11:05.120 --> 00:11:09.059 But Jesus says, you don't even apply the law to yourselves in this way. 00:11:09.059 --> 00:11:14.199 Their determination that he's worthy of death is completely unjust. 00:11:15.039 --> 00:11:16.019 And unjustified. 00:11:17.659 --> 00:11:22.659 Well, that's the snapshot of the conversation that we get with this crowd and Jesus. 00:11:22.839 --> 00:11:23.619 We don't get a lot. 00:11:24.079 --> 00:11:25.419 We get just the highlights. 00:11:26.299 --> 00:11:31.479 And at this point, John starts telling us about the reaction of some of the crowd to all this. 00:11:31.480 --> 00:11:38.680 And they haven't seen or heard from Jesus in a while. 00:11:38.800 --> 00:11:41.480 Because he's been up in Galilee for a while. 00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:43.080 Verse 25. 00:11:44.080 --> 00:11:47.259 At that point, some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, 00:11:47.820 --> 00:11:50.440 Isn't this the man they're trying to kill? 00:11:51.639 --> 00:11:54.259 Here he is, speaking publicly. 00:11:54.259 --> 00:11:56.659 And they're not saying a word to him. 00:11:57.899 --> 00:12:00.840 Have the authorities really concluded that he's the Messiah? 00:12:02.620 --> 00:12:06.480 So some of the people of Jerusalem are picking up what Jesus is laying down. 00:12:07.259 --> 00:12:08.600 They're figuring it out. 00:12:09.360 --> 00:12:14.759 They've known for a while now that the religious leaders have been seeking to put someone to death. 00:12:14.759 --> 00:12:20.399 But now this question reveals that they realize that it's Jesus. 00:12:20.659 --> 00:12:21.559 This is the guy. 00:12:21.659 --> 00:12:24.179 The very one that everybody's been talking about. 00:12:24.460 --> 00:12:26.399 He's the guy that they're trying to kill. 00:12:28.480 --> 00:12:33.220 Probably what's been happening is that the religious leaders have been putting a deceitful spin on things. 00:12:33.779 --> 00:12:34.620 Here in Jerusalem. 00:12:35.700 --> 00:12:40.580 Putting out the word that there's a man wanted for having repeatedly broken the Sabbath law. 00:12:40.580 --> 00:12:48.600 Attempting to discredit Jesus and poison the attitudes of the people toward Jesus there in Jerusalem. 00:12:49.120 --> 00:12:56.820 But now here, all of a sudden, it seems as though the citizens of Jerusalem are realizing that there's something not quite right here. 00:12:57.900 --> 00:13:01.259 Like we recognize that this is the guy that they're trying to kill. 00:13:02.240 --> 00:13:03.900 But something's not right here. 00:13:04.860 --> 00:13:07.680 If he's deserving of death for breaking the law, 00:13:07.679 --> 00:13:14.000 I mean, look, here he is speaking publicly right here in the temple courts and nobody's saying anything to him. 00:13:15.279 --> 00:13:17.219 The religious leaders aren't saying a word. 00:13:18.699 --> 00:13:19.899 What's going on here? 00:13:20.139 --> 00:13:22.899 Have they concluded that he really is the Messiah? 00:13:25.000 --> 00:13:27.039 Do you feel the 00:13:48.980 When the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from. 00:13:51.879 --> 00:13:56.400 Just when it seems as though they were moving towards the right conclusion about Jesus, 00:13:57.180 --> 00:13:59.460 all of a sudden the voice of doubt enters in. 00:13:59.460 --> 00:14:05.960 Apparently it was a popular idea that the Messiah would seem to come out of nowhere when he came. 00:14:06.300 --> 00:14:07.720 Not that he would be a ghost. 00:14:08.580 --> 00:14:09.980 They thought he would be human. 00:14:10.180 --> 00:14:13.820 But many also thought that his origins would largely be unknown. 00:14:15.139 --> 00:14:16.800 I mean, it can't be this Jesus guy. 00:14:17.560 --> 00:14:18.960 We all know where he's from. 00:14:19.060 --> 00:14:19.940 He's from Nazareth. 00:14:20.259 --> 00:14:21.280 Over in Galilee. 00:14:22.680 --> 00:14:24.580 It's kind of an odd thing to stumble over. 00:14:25.639 --> 00:14:27.440 I'm not really sure what they were expecting. 00:14:27.440 --> 00:14:32.620 If they believed that the Messiah would be flesh and blood human being just like us, 00:14:33.520 --> 00:14:35.020 a Jewish man, 00:14:35.680 --> 00:14:38.820 then of course he would have a hometown in Israel, 00:14:39.420 --> 00:14:41.200 a place that he was from. 00:14:42.560 --> 00:14:46.040 And if they were only expecting him to just seem like he came out of nowhere, 00:14:46.900 --> 00:14:49.480 well, that's what happened, isn't it? 00:14:49.480 --> 00:14:53.620 One day John the baptizer is preaching out at the river, 00:14:53.800 --> 00:14:54.899 and the next day he says, 00:14:55.000 --> 00:14:56.500 Behold, the Lamb of God! 00:14:57.620 --> 00:14:58.940 And there Jesus was, 00:14:59.100 --> 00:15:03.480 a grown man that nobody except his friends, family, and neighbors knew anything about. 00:15:04.120 --> 00:15:05.820 So I don't know what they were expecting. 00:15:08.000 --> 00:15:08.960 Verse 28, 00:15:08.960 --> 00:15:12.700 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, 00:15:13.480 --> 00:15:14.040 cried out, 00:15:14.860 --> 00:15:16.560 Yes, you know me, 00:15:17.060 --> 00:15:18.900 and you know where I am from. 00:15:20.200 --> 00:15:23.000 I am not here on my own authority, 00:15:23.300 --> 00:15:25.480 but he who sent me is true. 00:15:27.000 --> 00:15:28.420 You do not know him, 00:15:29.100 --> 00:15:30.740 but I know him, 00:15:31.200 --> 00:15:32.480 because I am from him, 00:15:32.860 --> 00:15:34.019 and he sent me. 00:15:34.019 --> 00:15:38.159 So Jesus kind of acknowledges the objection of the crowd. 00:15:39.000 --> 00:15:41.819 Yes, you know what family I am from. 00:15:42.279 --> 00:15:44.000 You know where my hometown is, 00:15:44.100 --> 00:15:47.659 but there is a lot you do not know about me, 00:15:48.079 --> 00:15:49.259 like why I am here. 00:15:50.679 --> 00:15:53.139 Do you know that I am not here of myself, 00:15:53.980 --> 00:15:55.419 or of my own initiative, 00:15:56.019 --> 00:15:59.600 and you do not know the one who sent me? 00:16:01.740 --> 00:16:03.899 Of course we know who Jesus is referring to, 00:16:03.899 --> 00:16:05.840 it is the same thing he has been saying all along. 00:16:06.959 --> 00:16:09.039 He is claiming to be sent by God, 00:16:09.399 --> 00:16:10.039 his Father. 00:16:11.059 --> 00:16:12.259 And if we are listening closely, 00:16:12.360 --> 00:16:14.240 he is also telling the people in the crowd 00:16:14.240 --> 00:16:16.340 that they do not know him, 00:16:17.459 --> 00:16:17.980 God, 00:16:18.899 --> 00:16:20.019 the one who sent him. 00:16:21.139 --> 00:16:21.720 So yes, 00:16:21.899 --> 00:16:23.899 you know a few things about me, 00:16:24.139 --> 00:16:25.039 superficially, 00:16:25.459 --> 00:16:28.460 but there is a lot you do not know about me. 00:16:31.120 --> 00:16:32.579 Let's finish the moment here. 00:16:32.580 --> 00:16:35.920 The crowd has a mixed response to all this. 00:16:36.040 --> 00:16:37.280 Verse 30. 00:16:38.440 --> 00:16:38.900 At this, 00:16:39.320 --> 00:16:40.520 they tried to seize him, 00:16:41.040 --> 00:16:42.980 but no one laid a hand on him, 00:16:43.280 --> 00:16:44.860 because his hour had not yet come. 00:16:45.980 --> 00:16:46.480 Still, 00:16:46.740 --> 00:16:48.500 many in the crowd believed in him. 00:16:49.220 --> 00:16:49.720 They said, 00:16:50.080 --> 00:16:51.040 when the Messiah comes, 00:16:51.139 --> 00:16:53.240 will he perform more signs than this man? 00:16:54.660 --> 00:16:56.320 So it was a mixed response. 00:16:56.320 --> 00:16:59.879 Some think that Jesus is crazy, 00:17:00.400 --> 00:17:01.660 perhaps demon-possessed. 00:17:02.480 --> 00:17:04.360 Some are trying to get him arrested. 00:17:05.279 --> 00:17:06.740 But in the midst of all this, 00:17:06.820 --> 00:17:07.400 John says, 00:17:07.779 --> 00:17:08.580 some believed. 00:17:09.420 --> 00:17:11.180 He has to be the Messiah. 00:17:11.360 --> 00:17:12.820 Look at the signs he is doing, 00:17:13.340 --> 00:17:14.480 and how many of them. 00:17:15.240 --> 00:17:16.559 Are we to expect the Messiah 00:17:16.559 --> 00:17:19.480 to perform more signs than this man has performed? 00:17:19.480 --> 00:17:21.460 Surely not. 00:17:24.380 --> 00:17:26.079 So things are kind of heating up here 00:17:26.079 --> 00:17:27.420 between Jesus and
