Like we're on the brink of World War 00:00:38.679 --> 00:00:45.359 Three and we just don't know what's coming next. And it's not just the world stage either. 00:00:46.760 --> 00:00:51.539 You might be here tonight and the things in your life are just stacking up against you. 00:00:51.539 --> 00:00:59.640 Life feels turbulent, unpredictable. You're scared about what Monday is going to bring. 00:01:00.740 --> 00:01:06.019 And it feels like you're just on sinking sand and everything just feels uncertain. 00:01:07.879 --> 00:01:15.319 And in a world like that and a life like that, as we sit here tonight, all of this, this gospel, 00:01:15.319 --> 00:01:23.000 this faith, this church, this Christian life, it can all just feel so small and vulnerable, can't it? 00:01:24.079 --> 00:01:28.579 Like this world is a storm and we're just getting swept up in the chaos. 00:01:28.579 --> 00:01:36.159 And we all just want solid ground, don't we? Just something certain and stable in this world. 00:01:37.659 --> 00:01:40.140 Well, that is what Genesis 14 is all about tonight. 00:01:41.039 --> 00:01:47.120 In this chapter, God is showing us in a turbulent, unpredictable, scary world, 00:01:47.500 --> 00:01:53.039 that there is one unchanging, certain thing that you can stand on. 00:01:53.040 --> 00:02:01.040 One thing that you can rest on in this turbulent world, it is the promises of God. 00:02:02.320 --> 00:02:09.020 We pick up the story of Abraham, a man with the promises of God, the promise of salvation, 00:02:09.200 --> 00:02:13.020 the promise that God will be his God and God will bless him. 00:02:14.400 --> 00:02:19.980 But that man and that promise is now facing a turbulent world. 00:02:19.979 --> 00:02:24.039 In fact, it's a world not too far from ours. 00:02:25.060 --> 00:02:26.579 It's a world at war. 00:02:27.939 --> 00:02:33.639 And a question looms, in this storm, what will happen to the promises? 00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:39.839 How will God's plan hold up to a chaotic world stage? 00:02:41.159 --> 00:02:45.280 Or to phrase it for us today, in this turbulent, scary world, 00:02:45.859 --> 00:02:47.859 what will happen to God's church? 00:02:47.860 --> 00:02:51.580 Well, let's see what God has to say. 00:02:52.600 --> 00:03:00.480 And to begin, we are confronted with that very reality of the world and the Christian life and God's promises. 00:03:01.560 --> 00:03:07.760 This chapter begins with the reality that God's promises exist in a turbulent world. 00:03:08.500 --> 00:03:10.160 That's my first point I want us to see today. 00:03:10.240 --> 00:03:12.460 God's promises exist in a turbulent world. 00:03:12.460 --> 00:03:21.900 So, we begin this chapter, we are just thrown into the middle of a multinational war in verses 1 and 2. 00:03:22.280 --> 00:03:23.240 So, do you see that? 00:03:24.080 --> 00:03:26.740 There are four kings over in the east. 00:03:27.439 --> 00:03:28.800 Try and follow these names. 00:03:28.920 --> 00:03:31.920 So, there is the king of Shinar, the king of Elessar, 00:03:32.879 --> 00:03:35.960 Chedaleoma, king of Elam, and the king of Goim. 00:03:35.960 --> 00:03:38.400 So, four kings. 00:03:38.980 --> 00:03:42.120 And all these places that are named, these are all east of Canaan. 00:03:42.740 --> 00:03:45.300 So, what will become the Babylon area? 00:04:14.420 --> 00:04:22.519 Twelve years, the five kings had served Chedaleoma, but in the thirteenth year, they rebelled. 00:04:22.519 --> 00:04:32.379 So, these five kings in Canaan had been many under-kings serving a mega-king, Chedaleoma, one of the four. 00:04:33.439 --> 00:04:35.740 But these five kings, they had enough. 00:04:36.639 --> 00:04:37.459 They rebelled. 00:04:38.599 --> 00:04:45.740 And now, Chedaleoma, he's coming across with his squad, all four of them, to sort the five out. 00:04:46.159 --> 00:04:46.240 Right? 00:04:47.279 --> 00:04:50.539 And so, a huge war has --> 00:05:26.279 Have you seen Pixar's A Bug's Life? 00:05:26.459 --> 00:05:27.199 It's a great film. 00:05:27.259 --> 00:05:32.060 It was actually, I think, the first film I saw in the cinema, in fact, if my memory serves me correct. 00:05:32.060 --> 00:05:38.879 And it's basically about a colony of ants, and they have their own little kingdom. 00:05:39.019 --> 00:05:39.839 They have a queen. 00:05:40.500 --> 00:05:43.899 But they are also ruled by a gang of evil grasshoppers. 00:05:43.899 --> 00:05:49.659 Who say, the grasshoppers say, you can still have your little colony. 00:05:50.139 --> 00:05:52.560 You can have your queen and your kingdom there. 00:05:52.979 --> 00:05:57.939 But we're going to come every summer, and you have to collect a load of food for us. 00:05:58.539 --> and the grasshoppers. 00:06:09.079 --> 00:06:13.659 Well, Genesis 14, it's A Bug's Life, right? 00:06:14.339 --> 00:06:21.039 The four grasshopper kings in the east, and the five ant kings in Canaan. 00:06:22.139 --> 00:06:23.819 And so, who knew A Bug's Life? 00:06:23.959 --> 00:06:26.560 It's actually about ancient Near East covenants, right? 00:06:27.180 --> 00:06:31.659 But unlike A Bug's Life, the ants lose here. 00:06:31.660 --> 00:06:41.820 So, verse 10, the four kings, the grasshoppers come in, and even though it's four verses five, the four just wipe them out. 00:06:43.040 --> 00:06:49.040 And verse 11, they raid the city, Sodom and Gomorrah, and they take everything. 00:06:49.200 --> 00:06:51.200 Money, people, animals, everything. 00:06:51.199 --> 00:07:03.000 And all this, it may just seem an irrelevant story, an irrelevant part to the story of the Bible, and irrelevant to God's promises, 00:07:03.240 --> 00:07:07.639 until we remember who is in Sodom. 00:07:08.159 --> 00:07:08.939 Verse 12, 00:07:08.939 --> 00:07:25.220 And this matters because Lot is an heir of the promise. 00:07:27.399 --> 00:07:30.300 He may have wandered from God. 00:07:30.560 --> 00:07:35.420 He's made some bad choices living in Sodom, but he's still one of God's people. 00:07:35.560 --> 00:07:36.379 He's a believer. 00:07:36.379 --> 00:07:44.120 It's a bit like a Christian, the Christian who moved to Dubai for the sun and the low taxes, 00:07:45.060 --> 00:07:49.939 but thought nothing of church, and is now just caught up in the middle of a war. 00:07:51.360 --> 00:07:53.699 But in fact, this is even worse. 00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:59.219 Lot is the only heir Abraham has in the world right now. 00:08:00.100 --> 00:08:04.279 And now, he's being carried off by the grasshopper army. 00:08:04.279 --> 00:08:12.079 Once again, it looks like God's plan and his purposes and his promises, that they're all under threat. 00:08:13.099 --> 00:08:16.279 This looks like the end of the line for salvation. 00:08:17.519 --> 00:08:22.219 Before, it was Abraham and his bad choices that threatened it. 00:08:22.299 --> 00:08:24.919 But now, the threat is from the outside. 00:08:24.920 --> 00:08:32.460 God's promises are getting swept up in the turbulence of the world and the chaos of this war. 00:08:33.600 --> 00:08:37.860 God has promised to fix this world and bless his people, 00:08:37.860 --> 00:08:43.100 but it looks like this world is just too chaotic for that to happen. 00:08:44.840 --> 00:08:46.820 And so, a question looms at this point. And it impacts our faith, doesn't it? 00:10:15.259 --> 00:10:21.960 Just in all of this misery, in all this turbulence, we begin to doubt God's goodness. 00:10:23.120 --> 00:10:25.759 Or doubt his care, or doubt his control. 00:10:27.759 --> 00:10:31.960 As you look to the week ahead, you might be feeling just that. 00:10:33.360 --> 00:10:37.279 It's like you're in the middle of a storm, and --> 00:12:30.160 He's kind of in a safe zone. 00:12:31.300 --> 00:12:35.340 And when Abraham hears the news about his nephew Lot, what does he do? 00:12:35.379 --> 00:12:35.879 Verse 14. 00:12:35.879 --> 00:12:52.519 Abraham hears and he goes straight after Lot. 00:12:53.639 --> 00:12:56.480 He doesn't say, well, our Lot made a bad choice there. 00:12:57.279 --> 00:12:59.220 He shouldn't have moved to Sodom. 00:12:59.620 --> 00:13:01.639 He got himself into this spiritual mess. 00:13:01.740 --> 00:13:03.679 Now he's just got to live with the consequences. 00:13:04.120 --> 00:13:04.860 He's on his own. 00:13:04.860 --> 00:13:06.159 No, Abraham doesn't say that. 00:13:07.379 --> 00:13:12.080 He knows that that man belongs to God, so he goes after him. 00:13:13.800 --> 00:13:15.740 It's an beats four. 00:14:34.259 --> 00:14:35.259 That same four. 00:14:35.259 --> 00:14:37.500 That same four that beat five. 00:14:38.700 --> 00:14:43.860 Now, those four armies are now crushed under
