from Transworld Radio broadcasting Bible teaching and prayer into places like Iran and Lebanon. 00:02:25.039 --> 00:02:32.340 In fact, we had a video from a guy who was broadcasting in Lebanon while bombs were falling about two kilometers from the radio station. 00:02:32.340 --> 00:02:43.840 We also heard from the Vine Trust ship that serves the Amazon, those poorer communities up and down the 00:03:11.299 We also had a presentation from Glasgow City Mission, who are now celebrating 200 years of bringing the gospel from the pews to the streets and lanes of Glasgow. 00:03:11.399 --> 00:03:16.939 And of course, that city mission movement has gone from Glasgow across the globe. 00:03:17.659 --> 00:03:27.060 And there were so many powerful, moving stories of work that was being done 00:04:01.180 And it's interesting as we come to Matthew 10, that we see the same balance of priorities in here. 00:04:01.240 --> 00:04:12.419 In the very first mission of Jesus, we come across preaching and care for others and a demonstration of Christ's power. 00:04:12.419 --> 00:04:18.339 So, as we get into these instructions that Jesus gives for mission, this is our first week. 00:05:18.600 But we need to recognize where this fits. 00:05:18.800 --> 00:05:22.360 It comes before the resurrection. 00:05:23.140 --> 00:05:27.340 It comes before Jesus' Great Commission going to all the world. 00:05:27.840 --> 00:05:30.720 And it comes before Pentecost when the Spirit comes. 00:05:31.240 --> 00:05:36.980 And so, the apostles are empowered to be witnesses to all nations. 00:05:36.980 --> 00:05:40.000 So, it's for its moment. 00:05:40.400 --> 00:05:43.480 But there are still relevant features for the mission of the church today. 00:05:43.480 --> 00:05:50.020 And so, look with me first of all at verse 5 where we discover these 12 Jesus sent out. 00:05:50.819 --> 00:05:53.560 Now, here's one thing we might easily overlook. 00:05:54.060 --> 00:05:57.500 Jesus sends people to go as a team, to go as a group. 00:05:57.620 --> 00:06:00.939 In this case, it's not yet the two-by-two ministry. 00:06:01.700 --> 00:06:03.460 He sends all 12 together. 00:06:04.960 --> 00:06:06.500 Now, think about why that would matter. 00:06:06.640 --> 00:06:08.920 This is their first time going on mission for Jesus. 00:06:09.660 --> 00:06:11.480 Think about the value of brotherhood. 00:06:11.480 --> 00:06:15.920 Think about the importance of fellowship along the way. 00:06:16.700 --> 00:06:19.759 Think about the significance of being able to encourage one another. 00:06:20.759 --> 00:06:23.480 How each could help the other to persevere. 00:06:24.480 --> 00:06:28.540 How in the setting of 12 different people with different gifts at different times, 00:06:28.600 --> 00:06:30.100 they can lean on the gifts of one another. 00:06:30.100 --> 00:06:39.260 Think about what a difference it would make if you see 12 people whose lives have been shaped and changed by Jesus serving together. 00:06:39.439 --> 00:06:45.780 It gives a picture into the transformed relationships and communities that Jesus came to bring. 00:06:46.200 --> 00:06:47.580 So, they're told to go as a team. 00:06:48.320 --> 00:06:52.900 They're also told, this is really basic, to go to lost sheep. 00:06:52.899 --> 00:06:57.539 So, verse 5, do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of himself as a shepherd. 00:07:15.459 --> 00:07:19.839 And he sees people who are lost and harassed and helpless like sheep without a shepherd. 00:07:20.699 --> 00:07:24.779 And so, now he sends the disciples to act as his under-shepherds. 00:07:25.159 --> 00:07:28.439 And to look to bring them into his kingdom. 00:07:30.399 --> 00:07:37.279 But let's ask ourselves the question, why does Jesus say don't go to the Gentiles or any Samaritan towns? 00:07:37.279 --> 00:07:42.039 Well, we know it's not because Jesus is against them. 00:07:42.479 --> 00:07:47.319 Rather, Jesus knows his place in redemption history. 00:07:47.979 --> 00:07:49.979 He knows the times in which he's operating. 00:07:50.159 --> 00:07:52.319 Jesus was born as a Jew. 00:07:53.319 --> 00:07:57.579 And he was, to use the language of Galatians, he was born under the law. 00:07:58.419 --> 00:08:00.119 To redeem those under the law. 00:08:00.879 --> 00:08:06.059 Jesus comes and he lives in obedience to the law of Moses on behalf of his people. 00:08:06.060 --> 00:08:09.899 And Jesus will die under the law. 00:08:10.500 --> 00:08:12.480 He will die under the curse. 00:08:13.040 --> 00:08:15.660 Not because he has done anything wrong, but because we have. 00:08:16.180 --> 00:08:19.740 But he lives and he dies under the law. 00:08:21.019 --> 00:08:25.079 So, he's come for those who also live under the law. you go proclaim this message, the kingdom of heaven has come near. 00:08:39.180 --> 00:08:45.020 He's speaking to a group of people who have expectations of a coming Messiah Savior. 00:08:46.180 --> 00:08:48.560 And so, he goes first to those who have received the promise. 00:08:49.900 --> 00:08:54.040 Now, we know that Jesus will, at times, go into other territories. 00:08:54.140 --> 00:08:54.580 Absolutely. 00:08:54.580 --> 00:08:54.820 Absolutely. 00:08:55.300 --> 00:09:01.560 And we know that he will give the Great Commission and he will send the apostles to all nations. 00:09:01.700 --> 00:09:06.740 But for now, he wants them to focus first on those who receive the promise. 00:09:06.740 --> 00:09:14.720 And he sends them to go to extend the saving reign of King Jesus. 00:09:15.019 --> 00:09:18.379 Now, we saw this last week, but just to remind ourselves. 00:09:18.500 --> 00:09:19.600 So, they have a message. 00:09:19.740 --> 00:09:21.220 The kingdom of heaven has come near. 00:09:21.960 --> 00:09:27.740 And then verse 8, heal those who are ill, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. 00:09:27.740 --> 00:09:38.980 And so, their ministry, their mission is a demonstration in word and in deed that the kingdom of God is here in power. 00:09:39.299 --> 00:09:45.220 And every miracle that they perform becomes a preview of God's future coming kingdom. 00:09:46.259 --> 00:09:54.539 And so, they are sent as representatives of the king, bringing both his message and his mercy with them. 00:09:54.539 --> 00:09:57.079 And both of those matter. 00:10:00.019 --> 00:10:06.000 Now, just to think about a few principles as we think about mission, not back then in the first century, 00:10:06.079 --> 00:10:11.959 but as we think about mission as it relates to us here, 21st century here as we sit in Edinburgh. 00:10:12.099 --> 00:10:17.199 First of all, I think we can say that churches need to be strategic in mission. 00:10:17.759 --> 00:10:20.899 Just as Jesus told his disciples to be strategic. 00:10:21.059 --> 00:10:22.659 Jesus understood timing. 00:10:22.659 --> 00:10:28.779 Not yet a focus on Samaria and the Gentiles. 00:10:29.299 --> 00:10:31.919 But that would come when the Spirit was sent. 00:10:32.740 --> 00:10:35.299 We see something of Jesus' priorities. 00:10:36.240 --> 00:10:38.399 Go to the lost sheep of Israel. 00:10:38.679 --> 00:10:43.439 And so, the twelve are sent with a focus and with a strategy. 00:10:43.440 --> 00:10:51.400 I imagine many of us are familiar with the saying, if you aim for nothing, you are sure to hit it. 00:10:52.260 --> 00:10:54.180 Now, that's true of any organization. 00:10:54.920 --> 00:10:58.300 But it can also be true of a local church in our mission. 00:10:59.380 --> 00:11:02.920 And so, for us, we need a mission strategy. 00:11:03.040 --> 00:11:06.040 And that's what we've been thinking about for the last few months as church leaders. part of the city year upon year. 00:11:27.700 --> 00:11:29.259 We can't do everything. 00:11:29.379 --> 00:11:35.060 And so, we need to be strategic for the sake of sharing Jesus and His love. 00:11:46.680 And to pray for our mission. 00:11:47.720 --> 00:11:55.360 Because it should be the beating heart of every Christian in every church that we want more people to be worshipping Jesus. prayer. 00:15:34.460 --> 00:15:38.100 And one of the phrases that stood out as she prayed was this. 00:15:38.100 --> 00:15:45.379 I pray that Scotland's youth would know Christ's jealous love for them. 00:15:46.680 --> 00:15:48.120 And it was a beautiful phrase. 00:15:48.280 --> 00:15:49.960 And it was right from her heart. 00:15:50.100 --> 00:15:51.100 And you could tell. 00:15:51.100 --> That's why He tells His disciples pray and ask that God would send more people out into the harvest field. 00:16:23.939 --> 00:16:29.360 And that's why He tells them to go and to act with His days. 00:26:12.259 --> 00:26:19.900 And it seems to be, doesn't it, a sad reality, an increasingly normal thing in our times that 00:26:19.900 --> 00:26:26.720 some major flashpoint happens, some tragedy happens, and all of a sudden people are very 00:26:26.720 --> 00:26:29.980 quick to jump to a response and to take to the streets. 00:26:30.740 --> 00:26:34.799 And so sometimes you have the situation where people from the right and people from the left, 00:26:35.200 --> 00:26:41.940 it's the same sort of trigger and they're both marching but with very different responses 00:26:41.940 --> 00:26:45.180 to that same one event. 00:26:48.180 --> 00:26:52.960 That captures, in a sense, something of the reality of Jesus' mission that he's speaking 00:26:52.960 --> 00:26:53.360 about. 00:26:53.840 --> 00:27:03.180 Jesus is saying, as people go and share Jesus, as the church looks to establish churches and 00:27:03.180 --> 00:27:09.279 missions, we can expect some people to be answer to all of their longings and others hated him passionately. 00:27:34.079 --> 00:27:43.159 Some people rejected Jesus as a blasphemer and some accepted him as the Son of God. 00:27:44.439 --> 00:27:52.259 Some would cry out in worship while many others would cry out, crucify him, we have no king but 00:27:52.259 --> 00:27:52.679 Caesar. 00:27:52.680 --> 00:28:00.320 Same person, same message, radically different responses. 00:28:01.840 --> 00:28:06.720 At the prayer breakfast, we heard a prayer from the head of the Christian Police Association, 00:28:07.000 --> 00:28:08.080 which was really insightful. 00:28:08.740 --> 00:28:13.620 A reminder that our police often find themselves on the front lines. 00:28:13.619 --> 00:28:23.859 And they're on the front lines trying to stem the tide of hate and violence, and they're trying to bring 00:28:23.859 --> 00:28:29.639 peace, to push back the darkness to make room for the light. 00:28:31.699 --> 00:28:35.819 In a sense, the same is true for the church in spiritual terms. 00:28:35.819 --> 00:28:44.960 That we are engaged in spiritual battle, and there are forces of darkness that are opposed to us, 00:28:45.059 --> 00:28:48.500 even as we seek to bring the peace of God. 00:28:50.159 --> 00:28:54.240 And of course, as we thought about the realities of the persecuted church, for so many, 00:28:54.359 --> 00:28:58.659 they experienced the physical hatred and violence also. 00:28:58.779 --> 00:29:01.980 And we always need to remember them in our prayers. 00:29:01.980 --> 00:29:07.900 But just recognize, look with me at verse 11, recognize that the different responses to mission, 00:29:07.980 --> 00:29:10.259 we can see them from day one. 00:29:10.720 --> 00:29:15.799 Whatever town or village you enter, search there might think, well, here's somebody who's made it. 00:29:31.779 --> 00:29:34.039 This might be about social status, but it's not. 00:29:34.579 --> 00:29:36.420 And it's not about intelligence either. listen to the message that the apostles bring, 00:29:47.079 --> 00:29:51.740 that Jesus has come as God promised to be their King and Savior. 00:29:53.039 --> 00:29:56.720 And for those who are worthy, who are willing to listen and to receive, 00:29:58.539 --> 00:29:59.940 they get a welcome. 00:29:59.940 --> 00:30:03.700 They get the promise of peace. 00:30:04.320 --> 00:30:05.980 Verse 12 into 13, 00:30:06.080 --> 00:30:08.160 As you enter the home, give it your greeting. 00:30:08.740 --> 00:30:14.140 If the home is deserving, let your peace, let your shalom rest on it. 00:30:14.200 --> 00:30:16.620 So that was a very traditional Jewish greeting. 00:30:16.740 --> 00:30:21.360 As you arrived at someone's house, you extended the greeting of peace, of shalom. 00:30:22.360 --> 00:30:26.720 Well, this is much more profound as these disciples are going on the mission of Jesus. 00:30:26.720 --> 00:30:31.720 Because what they are inviting people into is peace from Jesus. 00:30:31.940 --> 00:30:32.940 We thought about it this morning. 00:30:33.100 --> 00:30:34.440 Peace with God. 00:30:34.600 --> 00:30:36.779 Peace in our hearts. 00:30:36.779 --> 00:30:42.700 This is the invitation to find a welcome from Jesus himself. 00:30:43.500 --> 00:30:48.839 To find peace with God through coming to know Jesus as King and Savior. 00:30:49.339 --> 00:30:52.920 And so Jesus tells them, listen, some people, they will welcome this. 00:30:53.920 --> 00:30:55.859 Some people will receive you. 00:30:55.960 --> 00:30:59.059 And some people will enjoy this peace and this blessing. 00:30:59.059 --> 00:31:02.119 And this is part of the mission of the church. 00:31:02.179 --> 00:31:03.700 And this is the joyful part, isn't it? 00:31:03.859 --> 00:31:08.419 We're inviting people into life with God through faith in Jesus. 00:31:09.119 --> 00:31:15.740 We're inviting people who are looking to find peace, to recognize peace is found from God and in Jesus. 00:31:15.740 --> you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. 00:31:37.920 --> 00:31:40.200 There is also the reality of rejection. 00:31:41.620 --> 00:31:44.240 A people who say of Jesus, not my king. 00:31:44.240 --> 00:31:44.359 Amen. 00:31:46.299 --> 00:31:48.960 We've heard about the traditional greeting, shalom. 00:31:49.079 --> 00:31:51.799 There's another traditional gesture here. 00:31:52.299 --> 00:31:54.220 This shaking off the dust. 00:31:55.299 --> 00:31:59.359 And the shaking off the dust, off your sandals, off your clothing was a way of saying, 00:31:59.859 --> 00:32:04.519 I do not associate with this place or with this person. 00:32:05.640 --> 00:32:09.779 And part of the shock of Jesus' mission given to the disciples 00:32:09.779 --> 00:32:18.240 is that the king comes to bring people into life with God, to experience the love of God. 00:32:18.460 --> 00:32:24.460 But if they say no, it's as if they'll be shaken off by God. 00:32:24.460 --> 00:32:29.940 And we're warned of a solemn and severe judgment. 00:32:30.140 --> 00:32:35.059 Truly I tell you, it would be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. 00:32:35.700 --> 00:32:39.460 Sodom and Gomorrah, a proverb for wicked, godless, evil places. 00:32:39.460 --> 00:32:46.200 And so we are reminded that the greater opportunity that we have brings the greater responsibility 00:32:46.200 --> 00:32:49.160 and rejection brings the greater judgment. 00:32:49.160 --> 00:32:55.580 And so Jesus reminds the disciples and reminds us to share Jesus with others, 00:32:55.680 --> 00:32:59.279 to share Jesus within our community is not the guarantee of being well received. 00:33:00.420 --> 00:33:07.300 Jesus promises some will welcome, but some will reject to their own eternal loss. 00:33:08.300 --> 00:33:12.779 Now I wonder, we've spent a couple of weeks largely thinking about the compassion and the love of Jesus. 00:33:12.779 --> 00:33:19.879 I wonder if we're surprised that here's another example where the love of God and the judgment of God are running side by side. 00:33:22.039 --> 00:33:25.920 I hope we can see how important these are for our mission. 00:33:26.559 --> 00:33:34.160 Because people need to know that God is holy and He has a holy hatred of our sin. 00:33:34.859 --> 00:33:42.039 That His wrath and His judgment is real and it is a holy response to human rebellion and sin. 00:33:42.779 --> 00:33:48.339 We also need to understand that Jesus has come to meet our needs. 00:33:48.420 --> 00:33:52.460 And those needs are determined not by ourselves, but first of all by our God. 00:33:53.539 --> 00:33:59.500 And the mission of Jesus and the cross of Jesus, well that shows us what people's great need is. 00:34:00.399 --> 00:34:05.920 Our great need is a sacrifice that will turn God's wrath away from us, 00:34:05.920 --> 00:34:10.099 that will reconcile us and forgive us. 00:34:13.180 --> 00:34:18.400 And the message of the gospel tells us that we cannot do it by ourselves and so we need a Savior. 00:34:18.400 --> 00:34:29.460 Another thing we see as we look at the cross of Jesus is the outcome of turning our back on God's salvation. 00:34:30.380 --> 00:34:35.740 So as Jesus becomes the sin bearer of the world, what does Jesus cry out? 00:34:35.739 --> 00:34:41.579 That's a solemn message that people need to hear, that we need to hear. 00:34:41.879 --> 00:34:49.619 But the cross also, as well as showing us the justice of God, it shows us the love of God, the compassion of God. 00:34:49.719 --> 00:34:50.000 How? 00:34:51.119 --> 00:34:57.079 Because the one who goes to the cross is none other than the Son of God and Jesus came to bear our sin. 00:34:57.079 --> 00:35:03.539 Jesus willingly and in love to fulfill God's plan went under God's wrath. 00:35:04.719 --> 00:35:09.159 Jesus was the one shaken out for us to forgive our sin. 00:35:10.400 --> 00:35:15.980 Jesus suffers the deepest pain to bring us the deepest peace. 00:35:15.980 --> 00:35:29.400 And so our mission, like the disciples, it has a message that speaks both the horror of God's holy anger against sin 00:35:29.400 --> 00:35:35.980 and the wonder of God's love that provides mercy at the cost of His own Son. 00:35:36.960 --> 00:35:43.440 And so we need both of these in our
