00:04:46.479 Philadelphia. 00:04:48.139 --> 00:04:49.419 Phylos means love. 00:04:50.299 --> 00:04:53.019 Adelphos, Adelphia, means brotherly. 00:04:53.019 --> 00:05:00.740 And in antiquity, that word was almost exclusively used for biological siblings. 00:05:01.740 --> 00:05:03.659 But the Christian church co-opted it. 00:05:04.560 --> 00:05:05.879 We made it our own. 00:05:06.799 --> 00:05:11.439 In order to describe the kind of love that we are to have for one another. 00:05:11.579 --> 00:05:14.060 It's a familial love. 00:05:14.060 --> 00:05:27.560 We've co-opted it because Jesus has Love the outsider. 00:12:29.480 --> 00:12:36.000 But the question we need to ask right here now is, what stranger does the author of Hebrews 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:36.620 has in mind? 00:12:37.600 --> 00:12:38.680 Who's he talking about? 00:12:38.920 --> 00:12:42.039 Well, remember, 13.1 is governing this passage. 00:12:42.940 --> 00:12:44.300 Let brotherly love continue. 00:12:44.299 --> 00:12:50.339 So it's most likely that the people that the writer of Hebrews, God has in mind here, are 00:12:50.339 --> 00:12:55.899 those strangers who are Christians who are outside of the church that he's writing to, 00:12:55.959 --> 00:12:56.919 that the author is writing to. 00:12:57.000 --> 00:12:59.099 So they would be strangers to that church. 00:12:59.139 --> 00:12:59.819 But they're Christians. 00:13:00.500 --> 00:13:03.159 It's a way of loving brothers and sisters in the faith. 00:13:04.500 --> 00:13:06.599 We love non-Christians, obviously. 00:13:07.279 --> 00:13:08.259 We care even Apollos, would travel and would preach and minister. 00:13:56.019 --> 00:14:00.700 And they would go around all these different areas around the Mediterranean basin in the first 00:14:00.700 --> 00:14:01.059 century. 00:14:01.480 --> 00:14:02.659 Do you know who was putting them up? 00:14:03.500 --> 00:14:04.320 Local churches. 00:14:05.639 --> 00:14:06.820 They're opening their homes. 00:14:07.039 --> 00:14:08.159 They're sharing their food. 00:14:08.159 --> 00:14:09.699 They're providing their needs. 00:14:10.319 --> 00:14:12.360 It was a way of showing hospitality. 00:14:14.079 glorified. 00:17:08.240 --> 00:17:15.799 But we also believe that God gets a unique glory when He brings together people who are different from each other. 00:17:15.960 --> 00:17:17.640 And they learn to love one another. 00:17:17.960 --> 00:17:21.359 In the world's eyes, that is kind of like what is going on there. 00:17:21.359 --> 00:17:26.379 And what is going on there is the love of God. 00:17:27.859 --> 00:17:32.359 We love each other in a way that doesn't make sense to the world. 00:17:33.959 --> 00:17:36.500 Because we love each other with a Christ-like love. 00:17:37.319 -->
