here and you don't really believe in the afterlife at all. 00:05:11.959 --> 00:05:15.060 Maybe the picture you have of the afterlife, if you want to call it that, 00:05:15.159 --> 00:05:20.019 is just of your body decomposing, your atoms returning to the earth, 00:05:20.019 --> 00:05:25.079 and, you know, if you're lucky, your reputation may be living on for a generation or two. 00:05:27.039 --> 00:05:29.159 But no real sense of life after death. 00:05:32.299 --> 00:05:37.419 Now, what's funny about all these popular images that we tend to have 00:05:37.419 --> 00:05:45.479 is that they all seem to have no place for our physical bodies. 00:05:45.480 --> 00:05:53.400 Whether it's our spirit sitting on a shiny cloud or sulking in a murky netherworld, 00:05:53.540 --> 00:05:56.500 or even if it's just our reputations living on in the hearts of our friends, 00:05:56.620 --> 00:06:03.180 all of these images of the afterlife see our bodies as something that's pretty much just left behind, 00:06:04.379 --> 00:06:07.240 gotten rid of, done away with. 00:06:07.240 --> 00:06:14.740 And in that way, pretty much all of our thinking about the future, 00:06:16.300 --> 00:06:17.560 about the afterlife, 00:06:18.579 --> 00:06:21.180 falls woefully short 00:06:21.180 --> 00:06:24.600 of the biblical vision. 00:06:24.600 --> 00:06:28.939 Because you see, 00:06:29.020 --> 00:06:31.300 what Christianity teaches about the future, 00:06:32.200 --> 00:06:33.939 about our ultimate hope, 00:06:34.780 --> 00:06:38.960 is the resurrection of the body 00:06:38.960 --> 00:06:42.400 and the renewal of creation 00:06:42.400 --> 00:06:47.160 in all of its material, physical, sensory goodness. 00:06:50.240 --> 00:06:51.480 Now, don't get me wrong. 00:06:51.480 --> 00:06:53.700 The New Testament is very clear 00:06:53.700 --> 00:06:55.920 that when a believer dies in this life, 00:06:56.000 --> 00:06:57.540 they are immediately with the Lord. 00:06:57.980 --> 00:06:59.280 Jesus says to the thief on the cross, 00:06:59.400 --> 00:07:00.939 today you will be with me in paradise. 00:07:01.160 --> 00:07:01.700 Do you remember that? 00:07:02.300 --> 00:07:04.040 Paul says in his letter to the Philippians 00:07:04.040 --> 00:07:07.400 that to depart from this life is to be with Christ. 00:07:08.600 --> 00:07:10.020 Believers do, in that sense, 00:07:10.180 --> 00:07:11.660 go to heaven when they die. 00:07:12.640 --> 00:07:13.640 And you might think, 00:07:13.740 --> 00:07:14.319 well, man, 00:07:14.740 --> 00:07:15.819 what more do you need? 00:07:15.819 --> 00:07:18.800 To be with Christ. 00:07:19.899 --> 00:07:21.719 To see him in all of his fullness. 00:07:22.740 --> 00:07:24.379 I mean, what more could you ask for? 00:07:28.459 --> 00:07:30.980 But being with of the body. 00:08:09.019 --> 00:08:13.099 Not spirits on clouds, 00:08:13.539 --> 00:08:16.240 not murky souls lingering in the shadows, 00:08:16.419 --> 00:08:18.680 not merely a reputation living on in memory, 00:08:18.859 --> 00:08:21.740 but a body raised to life, 00:08:22.500 --> 00:08:23.959 never to die again 00:08:23.959 --> 00:08:27.259 in a perfectly healed creation. 00:08:31.359 -->
