They don't need God's grace and no one so bad that they can't have it, which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word. 00:00:39.019 --> 00:00:47.939 This morning, we're continuing our series in Genesis. You'll remember that Genesis tells two stories. It tells the story of the origin of the world. 00:00:47.939 --> 00:00:57.719 That's in Genesis chapters 1 through 11. And then in chapters 11 through 50 to the end, it tells us the origin story of God's people of Israel, beginning with Abraham. 00:00:58.420 --> 00:01:06.200 We are focused in on chapters 11 through 25 because we're looking at Abraham's story and we're doing that for two reasons. 00:01:06.700 --> 00:01:14.659 First, it's preparing us to go back into our series in the book of Romans, where we will pick up in Romans chapter 4, which is about Abraham. 00:01:14.659 --> 00:01:21.979 And second, it allows us to answer this question. What does it look like to follow God in faith? 00:01:23.819 --> 00:01:30.259 I told you last week when we were in Genesis chapter 15 that we were in one of the most important passages in Scripture. 00:01:31.340 --> 00:01:37.359 This week, Genesis 16, we're in one of the most painful and tender passages of Scripture. 00:01:37.359 --> 00:01:41.159 Painful because of the way that humans act. 00:01:42.359 --> 00:01:45.620 Tender because of the way that God acts. 00:01:46.519 --> 00:01:54.079 As we come to this story in chapter 16, we all know the appeal, the temptation of a quick fix. 00:01:55.280 --> 00:01:58.539 We know what it's like to wish that things would happen faster. 00:01:59.460 --> 00:02:04.599 We grow tired of waiting for our lives and for circumstances to change. 00:02:04.599 --> 00:02:11.780 And so we know the temptation that in the heat of life, we're tempted to choose our way instead of God's way. 00:02:12.439 --> 00:02:18.900 We're tempted to go the fast way instead of waiting for God to act. 00:02:19.620 --> 00:02:26.000 This passage we're going to see, Abraham and Sarah face the very same temptation, that very same struggle. 00:02:26.439 --> 00:02:29.919 They have been waiting, unable to have children. 00:02:29.919 --> 00:02:34.339 Remember, we found that out at the end of chapter 11 at the very beginning. 00:02:34.659 --> 00:02:36.819 What's the first thing we found out about Sarah? 00:02:36.979 --> 00:02:39.560 She is unable to have kids. 00:02:40.119 --> 00:02:42.599 And then chapter 12, there's this great promise. 00:02:42.799 --> 00:02:48.099 God comes to Abraham and says, look, you're going to be the father of this great nation. 00:02:48.919 --> 00:02:51.779 The promise is then repeated at the end of chapter 13. 00:02:52.179 --> 00:02:58.339 Last week, chapter 15, remember, Abraham asks God, hey, by the way, what about my heir? 00:02:58.340 --> 00:03:00.640 You made this great promise. 00:03:01.219 --> 00:03:03.319 I still don't have a son. 00:03:04.200 --> 00:03:05.379 And God says, don't worry. 00:03:06.180 --> 00:03:09.819 Your descendants will be as many as the stars. 00:03:11.060 --> 00:03:19.020 And so there's this anxiety, this ache, this impatience as Abraham is caught between the gap, 00:03:19.120 --> 00:03:24.099 the gap between God's promises for the future and his current reality. 00:03:24.099 --> 00:03:30.060 And so as we come to this passage, Genesis 16 this morning, we're asking this question. 00:03:31.060 --> 00:03:35.299 What happens when we do things our way those who take refuge in him. 00:04:12.939 --> 00:04:16.500 And so that's why we read now Genesis chapter 16. 00:04:16.500 --> 00:04:22.639 Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had born him no children. 00:04:23.920 --> 00:04:27.120 She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar. 00:04:28.220 --> 00:04:29.560 And Sarai said to Abram, 00:04:30.220 --> 00:04:34.560 Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. 00:04:35.800 --> 00:04:37.160 Go into my servant. 00:04:37.759 --> 00:04:41.279 It may be that I shall obtain children by her. 00:04:42.959 --> 00:04:45.220 And of quick fixes. 00:08:16.699 --> 00:08:19.379 We know that not just from others, 00:08:19.480 --> 00:08:20.379 but from ourselves. 00:08:21.360 --> 00:08:23.000 But the tragic reality is 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:26.759 often our quick fixes make the problem much, much worse. 00:08:26.759 --> 00:08:31.519 You may be lonely and decide that to solve that, 00:08:31.599 --> 00:08:34.779 you're going to go onto social media for a little bit, 00:08:35.240 --> 00:08:36.580 but researchers tell us 00:08:36.580 --> 00:08:38.259 that actually makes us more lonely. 00:08:40.019 --> 00:08:42.139 We live in a culture of radical diets, 00:08:42.259 --> 00:08:43.100 and so you may think, 00:08:43.259 --> 00:08:45.120 I'm going to lose weight really fast, 00:08:45.159 --> 00:08:46.460 I'm going to go on a crash diet 00:08:46.460 --> 00:08:48.399 by eating almost nothing. 00:08:49.360 --> 00:08:50.360 Well, what happens? 00:08:50.419 --> 00:08:51.720 You do lose weight fast, 00:08:51.919 --> 00:08:54.799 and then your body goes into starvation mode, 00:08:54.799 --> 00:08:58.579 and your metabolism plummets, 00:08:59.000 --> 00:09:01.799 and suddenly your problem is much worse than before. 00:09:03.939 --> 00:09:05.199 Kids, you know this as well. 00:09:05.299 --> 00:09:06.659 You get poison ivy, right? 00:09:06.699 --> 00:09:08.019 And it itches so bad. 00:09:09.299 --> 00:09:09.919 And so you think, 00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:11.079 well, I'll solve this problem. 00:09:11.240 --> 00:09:12.099 I'll scratch it. 00:09:13.919 --> 00:09:14.919 What does that do? 00:09:16.379 --> 00:09:18.659 Makes it much, much worse. 00:09:19.699 --> 00:09:21.359 My journey as a homeowner 00:09:21.359 --> 00:09:22.839 could be described in this way, 00:09:22.840 --> 00:09:24.780 hiring professionals 00:09:24.780 --> 00:09:28.320 to come in and redo and replace 00:09:28.320 --> 00:09:31.240 what previous homeowners thought they could accomplish. 00:09:33.540 --> 00:09:36.820 A quick fix is what Sarah does in this passage. 00:09:37.220 --> 00:09:38.780 We find out in verse three 00:09:38.780 --> 00:09:41.300 that she has been waiting for a long time. 00:09:41.560 --> 00:09:45.100 She has, in fact, been waiting for 10 full years, 00:09:45.100 --> 00:09:50.139 and she has decided it is time to wait no more. 00:09:50.779 --> 00:09:51.960 God has promised her, 00:09:52.659 --> 00:09:55.500 promised Abram that great nations will come from him, 00:09:55.820 --> 00:09:57.820 and yet not only do they not have great nations, 00:09:58.259 --> 00:09:59.639 they don't have a single child. 00:10:01.139 --> 00:10:03.540 She blames God in verses two and three, 00:10:03.639 --> 00:10:05.420 and this is true in a sense. 00:10:05.779 --> 00:10:09.560 It is true that God has prevented her from having kids. 00:10:09.559 --> 00:10:14.539 What she doesn't say is the other half of the story 00:10:14.539 --> 00:10:17.459 that God has promised. 00:10:19.339 --> 00:10:19.739 Right? 00:10:19.819 --> 00:10:22.339 She knows that she doesn't have a child. 00:10:22.459 --> 00:10:25.919 What she forgets is that she can hold on to his promise 00:10:25.919 --> 00:10:30.139 that he is going to come and answer. 00:10:31.119 --> 00:10:32.299 And so in the midst of that tension, 00:10:32.399 --> 00:10:34.559 in the midst of her ache and anxiety and impatience, 00:10:35.559 --> 00:10:37.959 Sarah takes things into her own hands, 00:10:37.960 --> 00:10:40.480 fails to trust God. 00:10:40.960 --> 00:10:43.220 This plan that she concocts, 00:10:43.560 --> 00:10:47.960 and the words that are used actually echo Genesis chapter three. 00:10:48.780 --> 00:10:50.200 If you're familiar with the book of Genesis, 00:10:50.379 --> 00:10:53.160 you know that chapter three is when Adam and Eve 00:10:53.160 --> 00:10:56.320 rebel against God by eating the forbidden fruit. 00:10:57.580 --> 00:11:00.080 Here, verse three, we're told she takes Hagar 00:11:00.080 --> 00:11:03.320 and gives Hagar to her husband. 00:11:04.980 --> 00:11:06.420 Genesis chapter three, 00:11:06.419 --> 00:11:09.419 Eve takes the forbidden fruit, 00:11:10.419 --> 00:11:12.259 gives it to her husband. 00:11:15.459 --> 00:11:16.779 Here, verse two, 00:11:17.039 --> 00:11:19.479 Abram listened to the voice of Sarah. 00:11:20.579 --> 00:11:21.899 Genesis chapter three, 00:11:22.559 --> 00:11:24.539 God comes to confront Adam and Eve, 00:11:24.559 --> 00:11:25.620 and what does he say to Adam? 00:11:26.159 --> 00:11:29.139 You listen to the voice of your wife. 00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:32.719 And so the narrator is telling us, 00:11:32.720 --> 00:11:34.580 look, when Abraham and Sarah do this, 00:11:34.660 --> 00:11:38.820 they are reenacting Genesis three all over again. 00:11:39.000 --> 00:11:44.639 They are failing to trust God's word all over again. 00:11:46.120 --> 00:11:48.440 And so the results are predictable here. 00:11:48.560 --> 00:11:50.940 We ignore God's ways. 00:12:52.159 It's our emotions that tell the truth. 00:12:52.879 --> 00:12:55.179 When we're angry or sad, 00:12:55.320 --> 00:12:58.939 we get to find out what's really important to us. 00:13:00.480 --> 00:13:03.639 Not only is she filled with rage, 00:13:04.340 --> 00:13:06.439 the narrator here makes it clear to us 00:13:06.439 --> 00:13:07.939 her plan did not work. 00:13:08.620 --> 00:13:09.919 It worked in one sense. 00:13:10.240 --> 00:13:12.360 It works in the sense that Hagar does, 00:13:12.519 --> 00:13:13.679 in fact, become pregnant. 00:13:14.100 --> 00:13:15.419 It fails in another. 00:13:15.759 --> 00:13:17.500 Look with me at verse two. 00:13:17.500 --> 00:13:20.659 The plan here is, 00:13:21.139 --> 00:13:23.799 I shall obtain children by her. 00:13:24.799 --> that Abram 00:14:45.340 --> 00:14:47.319 did exactly what she said. 00:14:48.279 --> 00:14:50.519 It's justified in another sense. 00:14:51.960 --> 00:14:54.100 Abram should have known better.
