sermons point or points, the main point or points of that week's text. 00:01:17.799 --> 00:01:21.799 And most regularly we walk through a book of the Bible together. 00:01:22.599 --> 00:01:28.879 We both formally and informally. 00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:33.900 We need to ask questions, push at one another's thinking, and most importantly, spend time with the Lord in His Word as we consider the days let me remind you that this is God's word to us. 00:04:08.300 --> 00:04:10.860 And it was written for his glory and our good. 00:04:10.860 --> 00:04:18.020 And so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands. 00:04:18.540 --> 00:04:20.980 Matthew 28, beginning in verse 18. 00:04:20.980 --> 00:04:24.980 Jesus came and said to them, 00:04:24.980 --> 00:04:30.200 All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 00:04:30.980 --> 00:04:34.180 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, 00:04:34.780 --> 00:04:38.439 baptizing them in you always to the end of the age. 00:04:47.800 --> 00:04:53.300 Now in considering this text and asking the question, 00:04:53.439 --> 00:04:56.079 What is the mission of the church? 00:04:56.639 --> 00:05:03.800 We must first consider the amazing Christological statement that Jesus makes concerning himself in verse 18. 00:05:04.800 --> 00:05:09.800 We can't ignore, we can't rush past this to the application. 00:05:09.800 --> 00:05:11.560 Because he says, 00:05:11.800 --> 00:05:17.819 All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 00:05:18.540 --> 00:05:23.180 We have to stop for a moment to steep in this reality. 00:05:24.020 --> 00:05:27.480 Jesus is totally in charge. 00:05:28.340 --> 00:05:32.500 There's not a single thing in this world that escapes his power. 00:05:32.860 00:05:43.819 --> 00:05:46.879 takes place just after Jesus' resurrection. 00:05:47.699 --> 00:05:52.139 He has lived the perfectly righteous life that we cannot live, 00:05:52.199 --> 00:05:53.659 but that is required of us. 00:05:54.300 --> 00:05:57.240 He has died a most gruesome death on the cross. 00:05:57.339 --> 00:06:00.719 And above that, he has paid the penalty for our sin. 00:06:00.719 --> 00:06:04.980 He received the wrath of God in himself that was due us. 00:06:05.319 --> 00:06:10.879 This was a debt that with all of our penitents could not have been repaid. 00:06:11.759 --> 00:06:14.659 And Matthew 28 tells us, 00:06:14.719 --> 00:06:17.560 He has risen from the grave. 00:06:18.199 --> 00:06:19.319 He has defeated death. 00:06:19.819 --> 00:06:24.019 He has guaranteed that for those who place saving faith in his person and his work, 00:06:24.360 --> 00:06:28.339 we will one day ourselves be resurrected. 00:06:28.339 --> 00:06:35.319 It is this Jesus, right, that is speaking to these 11 disciples that he's gathered on a mountain top, 00:06:35.560 --> 00:06:37.319 Matthew tells us, and says, 00:06:37.560 --> 00:06:42.779 All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 00:06:43.799 --> 00:06:47.279 What must his disciples have thought? 00:06:47.839 --> 00:06:51.779 What an astounding thing for him to say. 00:06:51.779 --> 00:06:57.199 Perhaps our minds were drawn to a text like Daniel chapter 7, 00:06:57.199 --> 00:07:03.039 where we see this title given of who we now realize is the Christ, the Son of Man. 00:07:03.139 --> 00:07:05.459 And Jesus calls himself this again and again. 00:07:05.559 --> 00:07:08.799 And Matthew is careful to record that for us. 00:07:08.919 --> 00:07:12.939 And Daniel records a vision in chapter 7 and verse 13, 00:07:13.119 --> 00:07:13.500 where he says, 00:07:13.500 --> 00:07:18.079 Behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man. 00:07:18.920 --> 00:07:22.459 And he came to the ancient of days and was presented before him. 00:07:22.699 --> 00:07:23.740 Now listen, verse 14. 00:07:23.860 --> 00:07:28.759 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom 00:07:28.759 --> 00:07:33.100 that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. 00:07:33.839 --> 00:07:37.500 His dominion is an everlasting dominion which shall not pass away, 00:07:37.500 --> 00:07:41.779 and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed. 00:07:41.779 --> 00:07:45.919 This would have been a good text for the disciples' minds to go through, 00:07:45.979 --> 00:07:48.159 and we can't be sure that it's where it went. 00:07:48.299 --> 00:07:50.539 But Jesus is certainly riffing off this. 00:07:50.679 --> 00:07:51.119 He's saying, 00:07:51.399 --> 00:07:52.579 This is me. 00:07:52.819 --> 00:07:54.199 I am the Son of Man. 00:07:54.299 --> 00:07:55.939 I am the Christ. 00:07:56.039 --> 00:07:59.299 And I have been given all the power. 00:08:00.759 --> 00:08:03.839 And if their minds just happen to go to a text like this, 00:08:04.659 --> 00:08:09.119 then Jesus' following command would not have been a surprise to them. 00:08:09.120 --> 00:08:15.620 Because Daniel 7, 14 says he's been given dominion and glory and a kingdom. 00:08:15.920 --> 00:08:16.240 Why? 00:08:17.220 --> 00:08:21.560 That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. 00:08:22.680 --> 00:08:26.840 00:09:06.800 Which means to go or to travel, right? 00:09:06.860 --> 00:09:09.019 So that's why we get the English go. 00:09:10.379 --> 00:09:14.539 That's why this text is most classically used as a missionary text. 00:09:14.639 --> 00:09:15.879 And it is that, right? 00:09:15.919 --> 00:09:18.560 It means go to the ends of the earth. 00:09:18.560 --> 00:09:23.120 The text itself says that we're to make disciples of all nations. 00:09:23.879 --> 00:09:27.220 But it is not only that. 00:09:27.860 --> 00:09:28.919 It is that. 00:09:29.039 --> 00:09:32.279 But it is not only that. 00:09:33.159 --> 00:09:37.379 And we can know this as we look into the Greek a little bit more. 00:09:38.060 --> 00:09:42.639 First, this Greek word is in the aorist verb tense. 00:09:43.240 --> 00:09:48.080 In this case, not indicating a particular moment of going. 00:09:48.080 --> 00:09:52.320 This is not a singular getting on a plane and going. 00:09:52.580 --> 00:09:56.480 But it is a constant activity of going. 00:09:56.480 --> 00:10:08.980 It's also in the passive grammatical voice, which means the subject applied in this case as you, you go, is being acted upon. 00:10:08.980 --> 00:10:13.120 So a commuting to a thankless job. 00:10:57.700 --> 00:11:03.180 But wherever you are sent, you ought to be part of this disciple-making endeavor. 00:11:03.179 --> 00:11:12.579 You see, even as Jesus has all authority, he is pleased to use secondary means to bring about his purposes. 00:11:13.679 --> 00:11:14.979 And praise be to God for this. 00:11:15.039 --> 00:11:20.099 We get the opportunity to to command you to go and good luck in the going. 00:11:41.859 --> 00:11:48.039 He doesn't want us to miss that he intends to empower it, which is why he says in the last half of verse 20, 00:11:48.419 --> 00:11:59.219 I am with you always to the end of the age. 00:12:00.779 --> 00:12:10.899 Jesus possesses all the authority, commands us to make disciples, and promises to accompany us with his authority. 00:12:12.039 --> 00:12:16.839 And beloved, this ought to embolden the listener to Jesus' words. 00:12:17.839 --> 00:12:23.359 We have nothing to fear for if God is for us. 00:12:24.299 --> What are we meant to be doing as we go and make disciples? 00:13:20.340 --> 00:13:23.679 And if you are an astute listener, you may have gathered where I am going with this. 00:13:23.720 --> 00:13:30.419 As I have posed the question to us this morning, what is the mission of the church? 00:13:30.419 --> 00:13:37.659 The means for the command to make disciples of all nations is the church. see two activities here expressed in our disciple making. 00:13:50.740 --> 00:13:53.919 Number one, we see the activity of baptism. 00:13:54.659 --> 00:13:59.079 We're to make disciples, baptizing him or her in water. 00:14:17.100 --> 00:14:21.820 And a believer's act of publicly committing him or herself to Christ and his people, 00:14:22.520 --> 00:14:28.320 thereby uniting a believer to the characterized in numerous publications, 00:19:06.619 --> 00:19:10.539 but most recently in a new little book entitled, What is the Church's Mission? 00:19:10.759 --> 00:19:12.180 How timely and fitting. 00:19:13.159 --> 00:19:16.899 He's characterized five different types of churches. 00:19:17.500 --> 00:19:19.440 Each with a different mission. 00:19:20.339 --> 00:19:24.480 And I want to read you a brief excerpt from this little book to kind of help us wrap our minds around 00:19:24.480 --> 00:19:30.400 the potential dangers of not having a clear view of what the mission of the church is. 00:19:32.400 --> 00:19:35.000 So only one of these five is commendable, to be clear. 00:19:37.500 --> 00:19:43.960 Quote, church number one emphasizes the great commission and Jesus' command to make disciples. 00:19:43.960 --> 00:19:49.120 Yet when they say make disciples, they mean make converts. 00:19:50.340 --> 00:19:54.140 So church number one gears everything in the church toward non-Christians. 00:19:54.440 --> 00:19:58.600 As if local churches basically exist for the sake of evangelism. 00:19:59.340 --> 00:20:06.340 They talk about Christian growth some, but their programs focus on individuals, not the corporate body or family. 00:20:07.059 --> 00:20:12.720 They don't see the connection between their evangelism and being a vibrant, united, otherworldly family. 00:20:12.720 --> 00:20:19.519 Based on church number one's mission playbook, let's call it Seekers Church. 00:20:21.019 --> 00:20:23.759 Church number two is similar to church number one, 00:20:24.259 --> 00:20:28.319 but it appeals less to middle class longings for things like purpose 00:20:28.319 --> 00:20:32.380 and more to basic human desires for health and wealth. 00:20:33.180 --> 00:20:36.960 Join their service on Sunday and you'll hear about God's desire to bless us. 00:20:37.380 --> 00:20:39.200 If only we would have enough faith. 00:20:39.200 --> 00:20:44.960 Based on its playbook,
